Waikato District Commander Superintendent Allan Boreham presented Constable Shane Jamieson and Detective Constable Catherine Miller (now based in Te Kuiti) with Commissioner’s Commendations at a Western Wai- kato Pay Parade — the formal Police ceremony honouring achievement and service. The awards, made on behalf on Police Commissioner Howard Broad, relate to the actions of both officers when they were working as the Te Awamutu on-duty team on New Year’s Day in 2007 when a homicide took place in Kawhia. The award cited — ‘‘Exercising excellent operational judgement the pair stopped a number of vehicles en route resulting in the arrest of the offender and sig- nificant evidence related to the homicide, and the arrest of two other offenders who had assaulted the Kawhia Constable earlier that evening.’’ Mr Boreham said the pair’s efforts brought a swift conclusion to what easily could have been a protracted homicide investigation. Western Waikato Area Com- mander Inspector Paul Carpenter opened the ceremony and told assembled guests Pay Parades hailed back to the era when Police Officers used to muster and march down to the local magistrate’s office to uplift their pay. ‘‘They are a tradition observed today that allows Police to gather to acknowledge the outstanding work and service of colleagues in a formal manner,’’ he said. That tradition wasn’t lost on some of the area’s newer staff, five of whom were awarded level five diplomas in Police Workplace Prac- tice. Te Awamutu Constables Mark Vaines, Timothy Bennett, Hayden Wilson and Rebecca Wallace were joined by Otorohanga’s Aaron Lunt in receiving their diplomas. And if the newer staff needed any expert advice experience was readily on hand with several officers from across the Western Waikato there to receive New Zea- land Police Long Service and Good Conduct medals, including 21 year service medals for Senior Con- stable Neal Webb of Te Awamutu and Te Awamutu born Detec- tive Bill Crowe, now based in Cambridge. ‘‘The key here is that these medals are not about just turning up to work, they’re about good service, not only to the Police but to the whole of the community,’’ said Mr Carpenter. Mr Carpenter said in today’s ever fluctuating workforce having quality staff willing to commit to so many years service spoke volumes of the calibre of people within the ranks of New Zealand Police. ‘‘That’s why it is so pleas- ing to recognise the commit- ment of three other Western Waikato staff who are recog- nised today by the awarding of the NZ Police 21 years service medal.’’ The promotion of two staff was also recognised with Sergeants Brent Wallace of Huntly and Christopher Greenwood of Te Awamutu both presented Promotion to Sergeant Certificates.

reply to my letter published onJune 3, re ‘Do Kiwi websitesneed brushing up?’.
I believe that Mr Owen mayhave over reacted to mycomments.
I’m not attacking anyoneand the list of websitescontained in my previous letter
could just as easily have beenan entirely different list of thethousands of websites that failto meet W3C validation rulesand most of them can’t put up adefence similar to Dave’s.
Let me set the recordstraight — I use the Te Awa-mutu online site on a regularbasis and I find it informative
and on the whole very wellwritten. Te Awamutu is cer-tainly better off for having it.
The letter wasn’t about anyone site, it was about the major-ity of poorly written sites. Ofcourse I do have a slight bias inthat my company writes W3Ccompliant sites and as he pointsout our website is not perfect
either (more a work in pro-gress).
However, raising the stand-ards is something I do believe inwith a passion. I’d also like tothank Dave for proof readingour site. Hmmm, maybe I don’tneed that spell checker afterall?

The grass in the middle ofthe road looks real nice but hasthe upkeep of mowing.

Sam Clarke may think hecan manage for a week withoutpower but if the petrol won’tpump and the electric doorwon’t open and the moneymachine won’t work for himand his beer warms up and if hehad to pay wages for people todo nothing but wait he would be
singing a different tune.The currentl cables are at
least 50 years old. There is noreason why three more can’t bestrung on the same poles to atleast economically double thetransmission capacity or pro-vide a back up.
The problem is that theidiots who are in charge willnot work properly for theirmoney and find a way to resolvethe problems that we mustsuffer while they don’t.

Hazelmere Dairy withdrew itsliquor licence application lastweek, but not before it sparked astrong reaction from the com-munity.
Waipa District Council hadreceived 39 submissions byFriday. None supported theproposed licence.
Local parents raised concernstheir children would be unneces-sarily exposed to alcohol.
Lavinia Saunders, a residentfrom the area, spent lastThursday canvassing HazelmereCrescent and Spinley Streetscollecting signatures for a peti-tion opposing the dairy’s appli-cation.
Within six hours more than 120residents had signed, eager toensure their opposition wasrepresented.
Mrs Saunders has seen a posi-tive resurgence in ‘Hazelmere’and believes it would be short-lived if a liquor licence in theheart of the community wasgranted.
There is special concernbecause the dairy is a focal pointfor children waiting for schoolbuses, heading to and from localschools or playing in RussellReserve directly across the street.
Along with her mother-in-law,Jenny Saunders, she was pleased
the owner had withdrawn theapplication. But she still intendedto lodge the objection in case theapplication was re-lodged or asimilar residential based outletapplied in the future.
She says she was told localschools and Hazelmere Kinder-garten were also lodgingobjections.
The owner of Hazelmere Dairy,Avtar Singh, is based in Cam-bridge and said he withdrew theapplication after becoming awareof a number of families living onbenefits in the area.
“A lot of people came into thedairy and spoke to the manageropposing the application. I washappy to withdraw it.”
Mr Singh confirmed he wouldnot reapply because he now con-siders a liquor licence inappropri-ate in the Hazelmere area.
Had the application been suc-cessful, the dairy could have soldbeer and wine from 6am, sevendays a week.
Waipa District Council wasadvised on Friday that Mr Singhhad withdrawn his application.
The closing date forsubmissions was advertised as5pm, Thursday, June 17 andJeanette Tyrrell, manager com-munity relationships, anticipatesmore submissions will bereceived this week.
Te Awamutu Police lodged a
submission opposing the licence.Sergeant Chris Greenwood saidpolice could only oppose the appli-cation on legal grounds; theirpersonal views on the supply ofalcohol in a residential areawould be irrelevant in a LiquorLicensing Authority decision.
“We objected to the applicationbecause the store is being run as adairy, not as a grocery store.There is a distinct differencebetween the two. We based ourobjection on the Woodward GroupLimited LLA decision PH14115-2008 case.”
Jeanette Tyrrell stressesdecisions as to whether or notsuch liquor licences are grantedwhen there are objections aremade by the Liquor LicensingAuthority, not the Council.
Council merely processes theliquor licence application onbehalf of the Authority. The appli-cation includes a report from anindependent Waipa LiquorLicensing Inspector to help guidethe Authority in making adecision.
Council strongly advisespeople to look at the Sale of LiquorAct before making a submission.
Nearly half the submissionsreceived in opposing HazelmereDairy’s application did not meetthe requirements laid down bythe Act and would not have beenable to be considered.
Climber airlifted off Pirongiaafter suffering chest pains
Inclement weather meant aman believed to have suffered aminor heart-attack had to spendan uncomfortable two nights onMt Pirongia waiting medicalevacuation.
Waikato Police Search andRescue Co-ordinator, ConstableDave Pitchford, said four men hadbeen climbing the mountain onFriday night, heading towards ahut.
‘‘During the climb one of theirparty, a man aged in his forties,has complained of chest pains andas his condition worsened hiscolleagues became concerned forhis wellbeing.
‘‘The group phoned 111 andraised the alarm with ambulancestaff who directed the group tomake their way to a clearing withthe intention of getting a helicop-ter up there to lift him out. Butunfortunately the weather closedin and the chopper was unable toget to the group.’’
Mr Pitchford said the group setup a bivouac for the night and inthe morning continued up to thehut. A further attempt to get to theman was unsuccessful and in theafternoon a paramedic and searchand rescue member made theirway up to the hut and stabilisedthe man.
‘‘About 40 SAR personnel wereby then on standby to go in andcarry out a stretcher borneevacuation. The large number ofpeople was required due to thedifficult terrain.
‘‘Fortunately for all concerned,about 7am Sunday a break in theweather allowed the helicopter toget through and the man wastaken off the mountain and trans-ferred to Waikato Hospital.’’
Mr Pitchford said the eventsover the weekend were a goodexample of why people shouldn’tgo into the bush alone and theimportance of being well pre-pared.

The risk for developing cancercan be reduced by not smoking,keeping physically active, keepingbody weight within normal range,by limiting alcohol intake andexposure to UV radiation.

Te Awamutu Rotary Club’sannual Four Wheel Drive Safariresulted in three grants worth atotal of $6,000 — but the spinoffbenefits to Pirongia communitywhere the event was held weremuch higher.
So far this year grant recipi-ents have been PirongiaPlaycentre, $2000 to helptowards installing a newheating system, Pirongia FireStation $2000 and a UniversityScholarship of $2000 which is tobe announced soon.
Traversing over 22 farms anda total of 180 kilometres, the 200people in 80 4WD vehiclesenjoyed both the stunning scen-ery and excellent weather.
This was the Rotarians’ninth annual Safari.
The club estimated that over$25,000 was spent in the areaover the three days in March,reports event organiser DavidSamuel.
‘‘Last year’s event contri-buted significant fundingtowards a defibrillator for useby emergency services in theKawhia area and paid for twoseparate university scholar-ships,’’ he says.
Each year the 4WD Safari issupported by the technicalassistance of a group of 4WDenthusiasts. One of them spokerecently at a Rotary meeting, towhich the owners of thefarmland traversed in the 4WDSafari had been invited.
Greg Paul told those gath-ered about his expedition in2007 where he drove from Bei-jing to Paris in a 4WD vehicle,retracing a journey which had
been done 100 years earlier.Last year he organised the
first rally group of 4WD tourenthusiasts to follow a roadjourney through time across theGobi desert to Moscow -Helsinki - Tallinn - Warsaw -and eventually Paris.
They set of in the northernsummer in May and returnedhome in August.
The first requirement was tofit the vehicles with GPStracking and convey them bycontainer to Tientsin. Therethey went to see the TerracottaWarriors at Xian and the out-
standing Olympic buildingsbefore starting their 45 dayjourney.
The Gobi is a “huge sandpit”which took two days and 800 kmto cross. Mr Paul predicts thatwithin five years this part of thejourney could be a super high-way.
The temperature in the Gobigoes to -50o in winter. They sawmany camel trains in the desertas they followed the power linesuntil they eventually came outonto a road.
They saw a 13th Centuryvillage and a spectacular statue
of Genghis Khan some ninestoreys high. Crossing theMongolian - Russian borderneeded patience. Places visitedin transit included Lake Baikaland Ice Caves in Siberia, NatzyNovgorod on the Volvo Riverand they had a BBQ at the NZembassy in Moscow.
They left Russia for Finlandand then crossed the Baltic toTallinn in Estonia. From therethey drove south throughPoland, saw Auschwitz, then onto Prague and eventually Paris.
Mr Paul has a small group torepeat the journey this year andexpects to have three groupsnext year. When asked aboutthe pre-requirements for such ajourney he listed a soundvehicle, health problems takencare of in advance and about$50,000 for a vehicle and twopassengers.

Drought broken without the floodingFour days in May with significant
rain brought the area out of droughtwithout the floods in other parts of thecountry, reports local weatherwatcher Paul Hobbs.
He recorded 112mm of rainfall forthe month, although the year to datetotal is still tracking 60mm belowaverage with 390mm for the first fourmonths of the year.
Promotions Fundcould close early
Event organisers seeking council support tostage events in the Waipa District have beenadvised to move quickly.
At Council’s policy committee meeting, coun-cillors recommended that the closing date forapplications to the District Promotions Fund bebrought forward one month.
If the recommendation is accepted at the nextCouncil meeting, applications will close at the endof July, instead of at the end of August.
Manager, community relationships JeanetteTyrrell said the $100,000 District Promotions Fundwas established to encourage organisers to stageevents in the district.
“Events bring a number of benefits and not justthe obvious economic ones in terms of visitornumbers and their resultant spending,” she said.“Events add life and vitality to the district,provide opportunities for locals and help ensurekey sites like the Kihikihi Domain are wellutilised.”
Events which have previously been supportedvia the district promotions fund include theMitavite International Horse Trial at Kihikihi,international waka ama competition at LakeKarapiro, national netball fixtures at MysteryCreek, and national basketball league games at theTe Awamutu Events Centre. The most financialsupport that could be given to any one event was$10,000.
The policy committee also squashed any possi-bility of “double-dipping” from event organisersby recommending that financial support for thesame event could only be sought from one councilsource.
Council was planning an information eveningin July to assist event organisers and ensure theywere clear about Council’s expectations.
“We’re not prepared to simply hand overmoney and leave event organisers to it,” MsTyrrell said. “We have expectations of all eventorganisers and we expect those to be met.”

Te Awamutu MethodistChurch has undergone majorrenovations in 2010, with theremoval of the old Sunday School Hall and the joining ofthe Church structure to Bry-ant Hall.
This created space for akitchen, meeting room, toiletsand vestibules for the ministerand for other church relatedactivities.
All renovations have been done in conjunction with theNew Zealand Historic Plac-es rating for the bui ld ing and are sym-pathetic to theoriginal 1915 design.
The lat-est in ancil-lary sound and visualequipment has been
installed which will make thebuilding ‘state of the art’ forboth worship and community activities.
In keeping with previous projects on the Church’s BankStreet site, local contractors have proved their worth.
Murtagh Construction were the main contractors, while David Peake did the roofi ngand Nicky Samuel the land-scaping.
“Tim Gisler(of Gisler Ar-chitects) did afantastic job indesigning the
new parto f
the Church to match the old,” says Peter Robertson, devel-opment chairman and Meth-odist Church treasurer.
“Retired builder Eddie Web-ster was our clerk of worksand he was here virtually eve-ry day throughout the project.He did a wonderful job.”
The brick church on the sitewas opened on February 10,1915. It replaced the original 1875 wooden church frontingRoche Street from the samesite, built to seat 80 people.
Methodism had come toTe Awamutu when the British Army occupied Otawhao Mis-sion Station in 1864 at the endof the Waikato War period.
The 1915 brick church was designed in early English ar-
chitectural style. The con-tract of 1241 pounds

A stone laying ceremony had been held on November 4, 1914, at which stones werelaid by Mr E.B. Bridgman andMrs A. Gibson - both thesestones are still visible in thefront wall. A description ofthe yet to be built church was published in the ‘Argus’ on September 17, 1914.
It noted: “Two front ves-tibuled entrances are fromBank Street. The roof insideis to be traceried, arched andpanelled work, and all the in-side walls will be fi nished withdado and varied panel treat-ment .... All windows will beglazed with tinted cathedral glass, in lead lights.”
The 1875 wooden churchwas demolished in 1940 tomake way for the Bryant Hall.
Previous modifi cations to the brick church over the years have included an ex-tension on the east wall toincrease seating capacity andthe bricking up of the westernvestibule entrance.
A re-dedication took placeat Te Awamutu MethodistChurch on Sunday. This Sat-urday the public are invited toinspect the renovations be-

for the Justice Department.The facilities’ suitability for
these activities has been en-hanced as has the capacityand capability of the Churchwhich with its adjoining roomcould now accommodate upto 300 people.
Te Awamutu Methodist Church has long been a land-mark in Te Awamutu and oneof the ‘architectural gems’ inthe town.
This upgrading will ensurethat role is continued and en-hanced.

McCormick and hisTe Awamutu Sports club-mates Thomas Moser (18)and Julia Main (16) havebeen selected in a36-strong BikeNZ team toride the DBR Australia2010 Junior and Women’sCanberra Tour from July2-4.

Chances ofMcCormick featuring on
the podium in Canberralook bright — he is amuch stronger, wiserrider than he was in 2009.
As a first year U17rider in the event, heplaced 23rd on GC, show-ing that he will be a realthreat this year.
Had he not beencaught in the back half ofthe bunch, when the field
split up climbing a hill onstage one, he could wellhave had a top 10 placingon debut.
He rode good races inall of the remainingstages, with a bestplacing of 14th in thetime trial.
Julia Main is a rapidlyimproving rider, threat-ening to break through
for a richly deservingvictory on the back of astring of podiumplacings.
Since placing fourthU17 girl in the Te Awa-mutu Junior Tour, shehas been third in theRotorua Tour and brides-maid in each of the Hub,Bev May, Hawkes Bayand Taranaki tours.

One thing is for certain — Te Awamutu Sportscyclist Scott Creighton will strike gold early in theTour de l’Abitibi.
The 17-year-old is the sole Waikato rider in thesix-strong New Zealand team flying out to Canadaon July 14th for the six day tour. He returns homeon July 29.
The Tour de l’Abitibi, held annually in Quebec,has been coined the ‘Junior Tour de France’.
As a consequence of being an U19 Nations Cupevent, many strong teams from various parts of theworld have entered.
The 156 riders, representing 26 countries, willstart the time trial from down a gold mine.
Their bikes will go down the mine (500mvertically) on an elevator the night before, followedby the riders on trucks the day of the race. Theriders will have a five minute warm up, onstationary spin bikes, before climbing out of themine to commence the 14.5km time trial.
New Zealand U19 coach for the past two years,Ken Bewley rates Creighton highly.
‘‘I see Scott very much an integral part of ourteam throughout the 700km journey over the sixdays of the Tour de l’Abitibi.
‘‘His time trialling skill and leadership qualitieson the road will be crucial to the team’s overallsuccess.’’
Bewley says Creighton rode strongly in supportof his New Zealand U19 team-mate Nick Sutton inthe Tour of Taranaki from June 5-7.
Sutton finished fifth and Creighton 12th ongeneral classification in the elite men’s field.Creighton was only two and a half minutes down onthe winner Joe Cooper and second placed GordonMcCauley.
Prior to that, he won the Central Hawkes BayTour, placed 10th in the Te Awamutu Tour, fourthin Rotorua Tour (winning the criterium stage) andwon the Waikato Secondary Schools’ road race.
‘‘Nations Cup events (like the Tour l’Abitibi) arethe next best thing to a world championship.
‘‘That’s why we’re taking these riders to Canada,to groom them for next year’s junior worlds inCopenhagen.
‘‘I’m sure Scott will rise to the occasion inCanada to cement his spot on the plane to the 2011junior worlds.’’

Defending champions Mor-rinsville Sports lead with eightpoints, having knocked over thetop two qualifiers Hamilton OldBoys, last week, and Fraser Tech18-9 on Saturday.
Hamilton Marist occupysecond place, two points behindMorrinsville, after holding Ham-ilton Old Boys to a 14-14 draw athome.
Fraser Tech, Hautapu and TeAwamutu Sports are all on fivepoints, followed by Melville andHamilton Old Boys on three andOtorohanga on two.
Peter Bain reports thatconditions were heavy underfootand Sports took advantage of astrong wind in the first spell.
First five-eighth JordanDavies played a key role with hisaccurate kicking to keep Mel-ville pinned inside their 22.
Second-five Leon Emery alsogoal-kicked accurately in thedifficult conditions, opening thescoring with a penalty from infront of the posts.

crash tackle by Leon Emery, wasseized upon by Sports’ centreMark Murray, who toed the ballahead, re-gathered and fed anunmarked Josh Harris to scoreout wide.
Emery converted to give histeam a 17-0 lead at the break.
Melville also used the wind togood effect in the second spell.
Following severalinfringements around the rucks,Sports lost halfback LukeParsons, who was the unluckyplayer to be ‘sin-binned’.
It was not until the 65thminute that the home teamopened their account, with No. 8Bronson Daniels scoring on theend of some good pick-and-gowork from the forwards.
The alarm bells must havestarted ringing for Te AwamutuSports when winger AaronRogers scored a long rangesecond try for Melville only fourminutes later to trail by fivepoints.
Both teams squandered scor-ing opportunities in the closingstages but it was Melville whomust have been left lamenting onwhat might have been afterhammering away unsuccessfullyat Te Awamutu Sports’ trylinefor the last five minutes.
Bain says it was a veryrelieved Te Awamutu side whenthe final whistle went.
For Sports, the whole forwardpack put in a huge effort, withprop Kieran Ramage again lead-ing the way with a fine perform-ance in the tight and carryingthe ball forward.
Fullback Jordan Craig had asafe game at the back in tryingconditions.

The 2009 runners-upat the Netball New Zea-land Age Group Cham-pionships will play theSouth Africans at ASBBank Stadium at TeAwamutu Events Centreon Saturday, June 19.
The South Africantouring squad of 15players and sevenofficials will be in Auck-land from June 12-21 toprepare for a test seriesin Samoa.
Carin Strauss, coachof the South Africanteam, approachedGaylene Dorssers (TeAwamutu) asking for anopportunity to playagainst one of the Wai-kato teams.
‘‘Waikato U21 coachRebecca Gabel is realkeen to play them,’’ saysDorrsers, the NetballWaikato Region highperformance officer.
‘‘I think it is a greatopportunity for heryoung team to playagainst a different styleof netball to what theyare used to.
‘‘It will be a toughassignment for them butthey are really lookingforward to the chal-lenge.’’

year member of the Wai-kato U21 team.

year commencing July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011 are due and payable
from July 1, 2010.
The following fees are prescribed and apply to all dogs over the age of
three months:

Urban Dogs - Special Owner Scheme $ 90 per dog
