“One is One and All Alone” by Nicholas Fisk is a science fiction story, set in 2045. The
main character is Trish, an !year old "irl #ho is the only child on a s$aceshi$ to Trion. %er
father is the &'ec(ti)e Officer of the s$aceshi$ and her mother is in Trion hel$in" to set ($ a
s$ace station. *he #ill only meet her mother in mid +an(ary 204.
After three months, she feels lonely and bored as she does not ha)e any real friends to
talk to e'ce$t her $ri)ate, m(lti!f(nctional diary- the oice/rinter /1. / is an intelli"ent
com$(ter #hich kee$s Trish entertained #ith its ability to $erform many f(nctions.
Thro("h her dialo"(e sessions #ith /, Trish learns abo(t clones and the clonin"
$rocess. The idea of clonin" fascinates Trish and she soon decides to create a clone to kee$
her com$any in the s$aceshi$ iolab #itho(t her father3s kno#led"e. *he names her ne#
identical t#in “lo” and initially it becomes her $erfect friend and com$anion. They ha)e f(n
$layin" and sharin" their time to"ether.
%o#e)er, certain mannerism of lo be"ins to irritate Trish as the clone beha)es and
thinks like her. *oon they start to ar"(e and disa"ree #ith each other o)er tri)ial matters.
The last stra# ha$$ens one ni"ht #hen lo starts referrin" to Trish3s m(m as her m(m and
this ($sets Trish as she feels her $ri)acy is bein" in)aded.
The ne't day, Trish o$ens ($ her diary and confides in / that she does not like to be

Synopsis
The King was making his rounds around his kingdom. The King visits Lisa’s cottage. Lisa’s parents began to praise Lisa and claim that she can bake the best pies in the world. In order to make himselfappear more important, Lisa’s father lies to the king that his daughter could spin straw into gold. TheKing knows that his kingdom is poor, thus, the king called for the girl, shut her in a tower room withstraw and a spinning wheel, and demanded that she spin the straw into gold by morning or beexecuted. he had given up all hope, when a strange little man appeared in the room and spun strawinto gold for her in return for her necklace! then again the following night for her ring. "ut on thethird night, with nothing left, the strange creature spun straw into gold for a promise that the girl’sfirst#born child would become his.
The greedy king was so impressed that he married Lisa, but when their first child was born, thestrange little man returned to claim his payment. The $ueen was frightened and offered him all the
wealth she had if she could keep the child. The strange little man refused but finally agreed to give uphis claim to the child if the $ueen could guess his name in three days. %t first she failed. Later, Lisa’sparents follow the little man and see him dance around a small fire and they hear him say out loud,“Tricks and riddles are my game, Rumpelstiltskin is my name.”
