I of people to become a champion. You don’t necessarily have to be the youngest, thefittest or the most talented but you definitely needdetermination and passion. This year among our runners are some of the mostleast-likely of champions. Alexandra Headland residentand Australia Zoo chief vet Melanie Panaioytou hasworked hard to earn herself a spot alongside Australia’selite endurance runners. Having only taken up runningthree years ago with the completion of her first fullmarathon in October 2013 she was a shock inclusionon the Australian Commonwealth Games team tocompete in Glasgow earlier this month. The pint-sized powerhouse finished a credible 8,setting a new personal best of 2.35mins with hopes ofgoing on to represent her country at the Rio Olympicsin 2016. Melanie will use the half marathon event onAugust 31 as a training run, having won the event andset a course record of 1.18 in 2013.Brisbane school teacher, 32-year-old Clay Dawson hasa similarly unlikely yet inspirational story, having lost43kg since taking up running in his 20s. Running is nolonger a chore but a genuine passion as Clay continuesto set new benchmarks, earlier this year winning theBrisbane Marathon in 2.30mins. He joins three otherrunners with similar personal bests for a strong malefield in this year’s blue ribbon event.Tasmanian father of four, Michael Booth, 60, will runhis third 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon in 2014, with plans
