Fountains oF WayneSky Full oF HoleSNATIONAL reLeAse dATe: Cd/LP: 08.02.2011

Unlike the iconic Ft. Wayne NJ garden store that inspired its name, Fountains of Wayne are still very much open for business. In fact, their new album Sky Full of Holes sounds like a whole new beginning for the band and its powerhouse songwriting duo Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger. Called, “full-fledged art heroes” by The Dean of Rock Critics Robert

Christgau, Fountains of Wayne continue their reign as consensus pop music masters, while Collingwood and Schlesinger also explore new frontiers within their unique respective songwriting aesthetics. Sky Full of Holes is Fountains’ most successful distillation of their musical maxims to date, but it’s also a whole hell of a lot of fun.

BLUE & PURPLE “3”

Here is the long awaited third album by Ohio trio The BUFFALO KILLERS. The band, formed by brothers Zachary and An-drew Gabbard, with Joseph Sebaali, released their first “Self-titled” album in October of 2006 on Alive Naturalsound records.

They drew the attention of Chris Robinson, who invited the band to open a string of dates for The BLACK CROwES. That road trip spawned the songs for the band’s second long player, “Let It Ride” produced by Dan Auerbach of The BLACK KEYS. Most recently, the BUFFALO KILLERS collaborated with Kelley Deal on the just released “Sing For Your Meat: A Tribute to Guided By Voices.” “what the Jesus and Mary Chain were to the ‘80s, Buffalo Killers may well be to this decade, brilliantly bringing the beloved sounds of yesterday into a new millennium.”– Jo-Ann Greene/All Music Guide “I have been into those guys for a long time. Back when they were in Thee Shams I brought them on the road with The Black Keys. I didn’t hear anything from them for a while after Thee Shams disbanded until the next thing I know the Buffalo Killers first record is coming out. I bought a copy of it and was stunned, like ‘Holy shit.’ They transformed from a good garage rock band to light years ahead of what they were doing in terms of songwriting, arrangement, and harmonies.” – Dan Auerbach in JamBase “There’s another band like that I really love, from Cincinnati, the Buffalo Killers. They’re a three-piece Mid-western rock’n’roll band - really fucking good songs.” - Chris Robinson in MOJO

Daptone Family, your PRAYERS have been ANSWERED! Charles Bradley “No Time for Dreaming” - The Instrumentals is HERE! Never before has the Daptone H.Q. experienced such a unanimous outcry for instrumental satisfaction. We’re talking interplanetary, people. I believe our rst request came in just minutes after Charles Bradley’s international, smash-hit debut left the pressing plant. A truck leaving the plant was held up by a couple of rogue DJ’s (we assume) trying to lock down the freshest wax for a party they were throwing later that evening. Gunre ensued, but the dastardly ends escaped with one copy of “No Time for Dreaming”. This is purely speculation, but authorities believe one of the thugs must have been carrying a portable player, because just seconds after word of the great heist was leaked to the media, Daptone H.Q. received a mysterious message - the voice barely audible due to some sort of digital trickery - begging for Charles Bradley instrumentals. The calls haven’t stopped since.

Our solution: 12 DYNAMITE tracks of unstoppable instrumentality. These hypnotic hymns – played oh so skillfully by Brooklyn’s premier SUPER group, Menahan Street Band, promises to be the consummate summer soundtrack for all you hip cats and kittens.

Artist: Hudson MohawkeTitle: Satin Panthers

Overview“I am listening to new @moanhawke and almost just got moved to tears. Wow.

These are the chords I hear in dreams that I forget when I wake” – Just Blaze on Twitter

“It's the kind of experimental hip-hop production everyone assumed Timbaland would be making by now.”

– Guardian Music Blog

There are few young UK artists who can unite the affections of Chris Brown, Flying Lotus, Just Blaze, Battles and The Weeknd – however that’s just the effect Hudson Mohawke’s neon-lit take on postmodern R&B has on people. The Glaswegian producer’s ascent has been swift and steady over the past few years. The one-two punch of the Polyfolk Dance EP and full-length Butter has made fans not only out of wide eyed clubgoers, but also the kind of critical minds in the position to make grand statements. One such grand statement in a recent issue of The Guardian called Hudson Mohawke “the new J Dilla” while placing him atop a new generation of producers including Mark Ronson and Jamie xx.

On 2009’s Butter, HudMo took in a spectrum of influences ranging from Cybo-tron and Outkast to Aaliyah and Prince. Satin Panthers casts just as wide a net in its five tracks, with a particular eye on the energy of early rave records. Fusing the sound of contemporary American R&B and the still-present spectre of classic UK rave may sound like an obvious proposition, but nowhere has it been executed so well as here.

Most artists would freely give up limbs to be reaching the level of all-killer-no-filler releases like Satin Panthers. With a steadily globetrotting schedule and overwhelming enthusiasm coming from all the right places the future’s looking intensely bright for Hudson Mohawke.

barsuk records

STREET DATE: AUGUST 2, 2011

Trained as a painter but best known for his role as a founding member (and the extraordinarily agile bassist) of chamber pop heavy-hitters Ra Ra Riot, Mathieu Santos has surprised himself by making a solo record. The songs that compose Massachusetts 2010, to be released this summer on Barsuk, were first written – you guessed it – last year in the great state of Massachusetts. Following their recording, however, those demos were set aside and left to sit while Santos spent time on the road with his main band. In the winter and spring of 2011, he returned to the 10 songs with fresh perspective and a critical distance from the context in which they were originally written. Applying his visual artist’s focus on only the most essential compositional elements, Santos borrowed a friend’s guest house in rural New Jersey and finalized the album in just a few days there. He worked quickly, maintaining the impulsive freedom of the original writing process but stripping down the palette and creating an arresting sonic environment that sparkles with tantalizing abstract imagery and finely-observed details, set against a backdrop of wide open spaces.

Santos sings with an echoing, bounding tenderness on opener “I Can Hear The Trains Coming,” and its balance of youthful exuberance and skillful elegance sets the tone for the rest of the album. Spritely vocals bounce off stark arrangements, the instrumentation referencing the natural musicality of ordinary things – from seagull shrieks to dial-up modem rings. As the album title suggests, these songs represent a particular time and place for Santos, and although the lyrics are largely impressionistic, phrases emerge regularly to make the album resonate with echoes of warmth, loneliness, love, regret, loss, and joy. Even if you weren’t there then, Massachusetts 2010 is a place and time that anyone with ears and a heart can hear and feel.

Practice In The Milky Way

There can be few records that manage to include tributes to the English female, nudist camps, runnin' for the border, and

French writer and WWII resistance agitator Guy De Maupassant... but then again there are few artists quite like Dave Cloud.

"Have no fear because this is David Cloud delivering to you the story of Siberian hypnotism", begins his latest 20-track

opus, Practice In The Milky Way, "yes and includes a variety of sounds". It's never entirely clear what this impressively side-

burned and portly singer, sometime frontman of the Gospel Of Power, really intends in his garrulous, gnarly narrated Nash-

ville blues: his tongue's in cheek, but it's rarely his own. As he announces on the title track: "good loving can be found... on

the rebound".

For Cloud, though, it's more like a second wind. After his 20-year catalogue was rediscovered by Fire Records and reissued

in the Napoleon Of Temperance compilation of 2006, Cloud, accompanied by various members of Lambchop and Silver

Jews, has increasingly found his true voice as a witty outsider on the fringes of American alt-blues - a genre that now, argua-

bly, is as far from the margins as its ever been. Which is why on 'Flowers', Cloud takes it to the edge as he mutters, "let

Genesis King Crimson smoke your weed... pretty owers... why do you hate the hippies so much?" Throughout Practice In

The Milky Way, Cloud seems tugged by intellect and carnal desire - the dislocated 'Guy De Maupassant' is followed by

'Spotty Girls', in which he is driven insane by the facial complexion of English girls who he threatens to follow home. "Let's

have it o‑!" Cloud wails along with the guitars.

On 'The Nudist Camp' he posits that the place for shedding clothes is "a great place for romance" in a growl over a lan-

guid backing, like Tom Waits telling smutty jokes at the end of a British pier. Cloud veers between deranged barroom blues

of 'Razmattaz' to free form rattling about calico, "Me heee co" and "Tex mex" in 'Surfer Joe'. It's entirely American, yet

somehow taking the piss - which perhaps explains Cloud's success in Scandinavia, the UK, and rest of Europe, and why the

purists might be a‑ronted. But for the rest of us, this wry take on gutter minded blues (see 'Sky High On My New Bimno'

and 'Bring On The Nubiles' ) is a witty middle nger to classicism. Or, as a female vocal describes Cloud in 'Mrs Crumb':

"raunchy, reckless and reprehensible... violent and vulgar." A-men to that.

BIG DADANEW 12" RELEASE FOR 2ND

AUGUST 2011

Aberdonian-in-London Ewan Robertson aka Offshore returns with the third of his “EP” series, his second for Big Dada, and it’s another massive stride forward for this multi-talented producer.

The EP begins with title-track “Pacer,” supple and dancefloor friendly but with enough of Offshore’s trademark melancholic melody to satisfy the most emotional of listeners. “Pepper” is a brutal bass number which pushes his sonic palette into new territory. “Pearls & Butlers” with guest Cienfuegos is a deconstructed ballad with a more ‘live’ feel than Robertson’s previous work. Skit-length “Mintlaw” once again sees Robertson pushing the sonics further than in the past, while “East Coast Capital Connect” offers a journey back to the frozen North of his last EP, the complexity and sharpness of the execution showing how quickly Offshore is still improving.

Already a favourite amongst electronic music aficionados, “Pacer” shows how widely Robertson is setting his sights. With another EP to follow later in the year and an album in early 2012, Offshore is ready to come in from the cold.

The Glitter End

(Part Of The May Cargo Collective) L.A.’s sci-fi priestess is a unique talent. Los Angeles is a trip. And

currently the music emanating from this West Coast dreamland are spinning heads like no others. Diva

Dompe is central to this L.A. renaissance, having founded the fabulously costumed trio BlackBlack

with her sister Lola; thrown down sinewy bass grooves as a member of the sadly missed Pocahaunted

and grown into a key member of the sublime L.A. Ladies Choir.

Not to mention her work as an exhibiting artist, model and vegan chef of course. Busy times! The Glitter

End is Diva’s first solo shot and it’s a fantastic piece of work. 80s noir rubs shoulders with vibrant

tropicália and mutated pop forms in this mysterious netherworld: You could imagine these unsettling

yet wonderfully warm tunes seeping from a late night house party in Mulholland Drive (a useful geo-

graphical and fictional reference point).

“Glow Worm” is a case in point, as its steel drums, fuzz guitar and bubbling bass provide the perfect

counterpoint for Diva’s captivating vocals. In contrast, the title track slow dances across the L.A. sky-

line, an analogue caress of whose lyrics the city’s mystical adventurer Jack Parsons would doubtless

have approved. Leaving the stratosphere entirely, “Andromeda’s Lullaby” is a wonderfully woozy inter-

stellar excursion, collapsing and re-emerging from waves of vintage Synths.

The album is interspersed with dizzying instrumentals that maintain the pace of the record beautifully.

Take the tribal thump of “Spinning Vines” or the closing jangle and drift of “Highest Cloud” that leaves

us driving back up to the canyons as the Sun rises. Like I said, it’s a trip, but in Diva we have a true

original as our guide.

Devoured Trees & Crystal Skies

Simon of Aristillus had barely turned 16 when he started working as a cover folder for Fysisk Format.

After a couple of months in modesty he started to bring along recordings by his band, clearly inspired

by JR Ewing and the "big names" of the Fysisk Format hardcore legacy: Kaospilot, Snöras, Dominic

and Manhattan Skyline. His efforts were of course laughed at by the rough-neck hardcore elite at Fysisk

Format. But thanks to Simon's inhuman stubbornness and networking skills, he scored a recording

session with Haust-mastermind and producer Ruben Willem.

Recorded and mixed in a mere two days, Devoured Trees & Crystal Skies is solid proof that Aristillus is

the future of New Norwegian Hardcore. The album shows a mix of noisy instrumental elements com-

bined with more melodic vocals and guitar parts that can remind the listener of Hüsker Dü, Sonic Youth

and other bands that mix indie rock elements with the energy of hardcore.

Even though only one of four in Aristillus is allowed to drink, drive or vote by norwegian law, they are not

newcomers. Since the age of 11 they have slowly developed from a flute and synth duo (which dis-

panded when the flute player quit to pursue his computer gaming interests) to where they are at to-

day. Aristillus are about to establish themselves as one of Norway's most promising new acts, having

played with Bullet for My Valentine and is this year's must have at all the important festivals. The future

is theirs.

Is Forever No Way

Hope I Die Virgin have - with their chaste and low key mix of rainy british indie and Dischord sound - been a cult

band reserved a few seeking souls. Two self released EP's, the most recent produced by Emil Nikolaisen of

Serena Maneesh, recieved nods of approval from besserwissers. Still the band with the strange name have been

walking by themselves in the murky mud on the banks of Oslo's underground, barely visible for the past two

years. Hope I Die Virgin let the world be and created an alternate reality in Harrys Gym studio through innumer-

able sessions in 2009 and 2010.

Is Forever No Way was from the beginning a megalomaniac project - a fantasy of a record so extensive, so deep

and discomposing that the world had never heard anything like it. The more time the band spent in the studio,

the more self-exhausting their ambitions became. Every bass note, every last beating of the cymbals have been

subjected to infinite interpretation and assosiation processes. Every chord shift has been analysed with astro-

logical and scientifical intent.

The texts, on the other hand, are earthy, yet spiritual, and range from a homage to a norwegian journalists mas-

culine beauty to unbridled drug fantasies from the perspective of a drug virgin. All these corridors of musical

excess were finally fed to Christian Engfelts mixing table. There they were carefully combed and cut to generally

understandable song structures, melodies and rhythms. Bob Weston (Shellac, Mission of Burma) sealed the

madness with his mastering. He assures that the album now is ready to be set onto the public world and can be

used on internet and radio, as well as analogue home systems.

All the audience has to do is chose a format of choice; vinyl, cd or one of the modern digital solutions. Now eve-

ryday people with everyday chores can live their everyday lives and consume Hope I Die Virgin's debut without

having to face the qualms, mental as well as aesthetic, that lie behind. On the surface it seems like Is Forever No

Way is a perfectly ordinary record.

West Coast EP

East London grime producer D.O.K has been something like Terror Danjah‟s evil twin since the early

2000‟s, when Terror and D.O.K. shared many EPs and production credits together on key early grime

label Aftershock. More recently, they worked together on „Pro Plus‟ from Terror‟s recent „Undeniable‟

album, and D.O.K.‟s „Golden Axe‟ EP was the inaugural release last summer on Terror‟s own Hardrive

imprint.

These tracks for his debut solo Hyperdub EP are sleazily deranged grime; „West Coast‟, which features

extra input from Terror Danjah, has a half-time, low-riding head-nod feel that references classic G-

Funk “funky worm” style lead synth, and manages to sound simultaneously melodic and like a swarm

of angry wasps. He lays this basic template over a complex stop-start detailed eight bar style pattern

that reminds of the jagged edges of early computer game music, but with the strange swing and double

-time fills of a prime Timbaland record.

„West Coast VIP‟ keeps the funky worm feeling but changes the melody. The track is hyperactive, add-

ing in fidgety edits, scratches, and enough rhythmic trap doors to keep DJs on their toes, over off-beat

chords that recall dub reggae.

„East Coast‟ is a track with the essential schizophrenic twists of classic eight bar grime. A stiff electro

beat and a wiry melody breaks down into speaker trashing bass, steely claps and brass, with a brutish

energy that is extremely welcome.

Kelly Price W8 Gain Vol.II EP

‘Kelly Price W8 Gain Vol.II EP’ is the four track Hyperdub debut from Hype Williams, a group with two

core members who have spawned a steadily growing labyrinth of hermetic, audio/visual surrealism

over the last year, and have attracted the attention of many inquisitive and occasionally confused eyes

and ears.

Hype Williams’ hazy aesthetic gives these tracks an opiated glow from the get go. ‘Rise Up’ buries Inga

Copeland’s soft untrained vocal in slow kicks and the most warm, ecstatic chords this side of early New

Jersey Garage. The rough dub feel and hand punched drums of ‘Boss Man’ are matched with cloud-like

Detroit chords and smudged melodies that sound like they’re borrowed off a lost Wiley Sino-Grime

classic.

‘Farthing Wood Dub’ rubs together smooth chords reminiscent of 808 State’s ‘Pacific State’ with an

Augustus Pablo-styled melodica, while occasional jump cut edits and awkward melodies stop the track

from feeling too settled. The last track ‘Bad Mind’ plays out the awkward juxtaposition of graceful

rounds of Japanese-sounding synths that gently chime behind the entrancing gloom of a poetry recital

over a winding bassline.

Hype Williams' odd sounding musical narcotics seem perfectly at home on Hyperdub.

Set The Tone EP

The EP starts with ‘Set The Tone’. It’s been a feature of Kode9’s sets for about six

months now, and doesn’t fail to get bodies moving. The track opens with a dazzling lat-

tice of Latin percussion over a driving, off beat kick drum, before the song breaks into an

infectious vocoder accompanied by lush Rhodes chords.

It’s one of those songs that manages to mix the worlds of dance music abstraction and

catchy song writing without falling into obvious tropes. ‘The Power Of Love’ mixes similar

elements in a completely different way, zoning into a more Masters At Work vibe. Here a

short vocoder repeat and swelling synths roll out over a big bassline and a swung gara-

gish drum pattern, but it’s the depth of production that really builds the intensity here,

as unexpected elements such as huge orchestral strings and spooked synth lines are

woven in and out.

Finally, on a completely different tip, is ‘Moves’, slower but still perhaps even more

danceable. If it wasn’t for its rasping, grimey bassline, and some classic house strings

and xylophone towards the end , it could be mistaken for a long lost Sa-Ra dub or the

instrumental for an R&B classic.
