Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, Jesus Christ was so much thankful to many people: to the Samaritan woman who gave him cup of water, to the one who anointed his feet with the oil, to the people listening to him for hours by suppling the food to them, to the people who stood by him at the time of Calvary, to Martha and Mary for hospitality, and to many other people. In today’s gospel we hear about only one man cured from leprosy who came back to Jesus with a thankful heart. "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" In Chicago we have the annual Christifideles Award to recognize lay people involved in par-

ishes across the Archdiocese. The name of the award comes from the apostolic exhortation issued in 1988 as a post-synodal document regarding the vocation and the mission of the lay faithful in the Church and in the world. This is typical that the Vatican encyclicals, exhortations, and letters are named with the first words of the document of their original text written in Latin. The apostolic exhortation about lay faithful is called Christifideles Laici. The Introduction in English translation gives us the idea about the whole document:

THE LAY MEMBERS of Christ's Faithful People (Christifideles Laici), whose "Vocation and Mission in the Church and in the World Twenty Years after the Second Vatican Council" was the topic of the 1987 Synod of Bishops, are those who form that part of the People of God which might be likened to the labour-ers in the vineyard mentioned in Matthew's Gospel: "For the Kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for a de-narius a day, he sent them into his vineyard" (Mt 20:1-2). The gospel parable sets before our eyes the Lord's vast vineyard and the multitude of persons, both women and men, who are called and sent forth by him to labour in it. The vineyard is the whole world (cf. Mt 13:38), which is to be transformed according to the plan of God in view of the final coming of the Kingdom of God.

For the Christifidelis Award in our archdiocese every parish can recognize each year one person, or one couple. The Christifideles Award is given to Catholic laypeople who have, by participating in parish life, demonstrated the personal and ministerial renewal, and the vocation of responsibility for the church’s life. At OLMC we always have a dilemma to pick just one from among many serving with great dedication. This year we nominated the Molas family: Rose, Enrique, Joann, and Timothy. They are involved in Lectoring, Extraordinary Ministry, Religious Education, Music Min-istry, Altar Serving, Finance Committee, Filipino Ministry, Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and always are ready to help with many other activities. We are thankful for their service, their dedicated time and talents, for being a blessing to our parish. May God bless you, Father Andrew

World Mission Sunday Next Week Next weekend we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support mission dio-ceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Eu-rope, where priests, reli-gious and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities. Please keep the Pope’s missions in your prayers and be generous in next week’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Rosary This Month of the Most Holy Rosary is also Respect Life Month, so this week’s intention for praying the Rosary is for a greater respect for life. Thank you to Lori G., John I., Evelyn K., Terri K., Gilda M., Mary M., Ted M., Jose-phine N., Emilie P., Stefania P., Jean R., Shirley S., and Milabelle T. for praying at least one Rosary a week. Please contact the rectory to have your name added to the list.

Living Rosary During Our Lady of Fatima’s appearances to three shepherd children, she said, “You have seen hell where the poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved

and there will be peace.” The Living Rosary is where people pray one decade of the Rosary every day for the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the honor of Saint Philomena. The Joyful Mysteries are covered by Ted M., Barb R., Josephine N., Karen R., and Mary M. The first two Luminous Mysteries are covered by Barb R. and Mary M. If you would like to be devoted to the Im-maculate Heart of Mary, pray one of the other three dec-ades of the Luminous Mysteries daily. Contact the recto-ry so your name can be included.

Coat Drive this Weekend Fall and winter coats, jackets, hats, scarves, mittens, and gloves are being collected for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores. We will have a table set up in the narthex to leave your donation.

Bible Study We will look at chapters 18 through 21 of the Gospel according to John on Wednesday, October 23, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Hayes Center. These are the final chapters of John’s Gospel, on the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Give God an hour of time in the study of his Word.

the Lord. This is the first Catholic book on this subject in 70 years, written by Art and Laraine Bennett. Our next meeting is Sunday, December 1, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. in Hayes Center.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH Are people suffering domes c violence in my neighborhood? Sadly, domes c violence occurs irrespec ve of neighborhood, religion, ethnicity, occupa on, beauty, intelligence, charm, educa on or age. When the wife in a marriage is abused she may suffer physical injury or psychological injury such as depression and an inability to trust. ( Men may be vic ms too but 85% of reported cases are violence against women.) Children in such families are at risk to be abused also. They are likely to have trouble at school and may develop drug and alcohol addic ons later. Surprisingly, they are at greater risk to repeat violent scenarios as an adult, being abused or an abuser.

Why do women stay? Mainly out of fear. They may fear they cannot support themselves and their chil-dren; they might lose their children; they hope the abuser will change and once again demonstrate the love and respect they once enjoyed. Some mes they stay because they experience shame; at mes they wrongly believe the Church or the Bible requires them to stay. Some stay for unknown reasons. Some ac-quire ba ered woman syndrome in which they iden fy with the goals of the abuser. Many stay for fear they will be killed by the abuser while leaving.

Why do abusers ba er? Domes c violence is a learned behavior. Those who are violent learned how through observa on and reinforcement. They are reinforced when their behavior gives them power and control over their partner. Typically the abuser denies it is happening or minimizes it. O en they blame their vic m thinking: “She made me do it.”

NEXT WEEKEND, OCTOBER 19TH AND 20TH, THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MINISTRY WILL BE IN THE NAR-THEX BEFORE AND AFTER ALL MASSES. PLEASE STOP BY AND LEARN ABOUT OUR MINISTRY AND WAYS WE CAN HELP.
