Troubleshoot and analyze TD-SCDMA

modulation and RF performance with

Option B7X for Agilent’s 89600B vec-

tor signal analysis (VSA) software.

One of a family of options for the

89600B VSA software, this analysis

package includes the 3GPP N-TDD

1.28 Mcps version of TD-SCDMA,

including HSDPA (16QAM, 64QAM,

and 8PSK).

Option B7X demodulates HSDPA

16QAM and 8PSK modulated code

channels, with automatic detection

of code channel modulation type,

including manual override and auto-

matic detection of multiple mid-amble

shifts. Get maximum visibility into the

signal with single code domain layer

or composite power and code domain

displays. Normalize code-domain

power to display code domain power

relative to total signal power. Make

automatic measurements of rho,

EVM, frequency error, I/Q offset, I/Q

skew and more.

TD-SCDMA is just one of over 70

signal standards and modulation

types for which the 89600B vector

signal analysis (VSA) software cre-

ates a window into what’s happening

inside your complex wireless devices.

The 89600B tools provide views of

virtually every facet of a problem,

helping you see the “why?” behind

signal problems. Whether you’re

working with emerging or established

standards, Agilent’s industry-leading

89600B VSA software helps you see

through the complexity.

Try before you buy!

Download the 89600B software and use it free for 14 days to make measurements with your analysis hardware, or use our recorded demo signals by selecting File > Recall > Recall Demo > TD-SCDMA > on the software toolbar. Request your free trial license today:

TD-SCDMA Modulation Analysis

TD-SCDMA technology overview

Time division-synchronous code

division multiple access

(TD-SCDMA) combines FDMA and

CDMA technologies. Unlike W-CDMA

and cdma2000® technologies, this

TDD standard transmits and receives

on the same frequency, which greatly

increases spectrum effi ciency.

Because TD-SCDMA effectively

handles symmetrical and asymmetrical

traffi c, it is ideal for data-intensive

applications, such as mobile internet

access and multimedia applications.

TD-SCDMA was proposed by the

China Wireless Telecommunication

Standards group (CWTS) and approved

as a 3G technology by ITU in 1999. The

TD-SCDMA standard is fully supported

by 3GPP and the China Communication

Standards Association (CCSA). The

3GPP TD-SCDMA standard is also

known as the low chip rate (LCR)

option of TDD, which is included in

the 3GPP Universal Terrestrial Radio

Access (UTRA) as the UTRA-TDD

option.

Analysis and Troubleshooting

Gain insight into your signal with 20:20 visibility

The 89600B VSA software profi les

the signal’s power over time with

up to 20 traces with 20 markers

each, allowing you to look at overall,

composite, and layer performance,

simultaneously. An error summary

table provides detailed pilot phase

coding information and individual

timeslot error data, with chip timing,

total power, midamble power and

data fi eld power error information.

Compare all these values at base-

band, IF, and RF.

View overall, composite, and layer data. The Overall Time trace, which provides an arrow to indi-

cate the uplink/downlink status of each timeslot, shows timeslot 6 selected. IQ constellations for

the layer and composite signals appear in Traces E and C.

Insightful display formats help characterize signals. Here, a captured signal has been replayed using

overlap processing to effectively “slow it down.” The cumulative history display format (Trace B),

highlights signal performance over very long periods.

5

Review your signal’s performance with CDE and CDP data

Code domain error (CDE) and code

domain power (CDP) results are

available for the layer or the com-

posite signal in either averaged or

instantaneous value form. The CDE

of a particular code channel is a

measure of the error power in a code

channel relative to the total signal

power. CDP is an analysis of the dis-

tribution of signal power across the

set of code channels normalized to

the total signal power. Together they

provide key insight into the perfor-

mance of a TD-SCDMA system.

CDE and CDP data is shown in a multi-color format that assigns a unique color to each active code layer,

for easy visual identifi cation. Markers on the composite trace help with the identifi cation of code layers.

Dynamic Help quickly links you to the explanation of a menu or trace. Here, it provides information on

the Channel/Layer tab where you can select the desired despread channel and CDP code layer that you

would like to display.

6

Get a clear view of composite signals

Composite denotes trace data results

for the composite signal, which in-

cludes all spread code lengths (sym-

bol rate) and code channels. These

measurements, useful for evaluating

the overall in-band performance of

the signal, include: composite code

domain power (CDP) and composite

code domain error (CDE), as well as

time domain measurements such as

rho, EVM, EVM spectrum, and EVM

time.

Detailed error information on the composite signal performance of a single timeslot provides the

next layer of powerful troubleshooting. Note that for error traces with time (chips) on the x-axis,

the midamble location is denoted.

7

Open a window into your signal with channel analysis

The 89600B lets you look at your

signal one channel at a time. Specify

the code channel and spread code

length to uniquely specify a channel,

and you can look at its IQ trajectory

and errors over time. Detailed chan-

nel error summary data provides both

bit demodulation and detailed overall

error measurements.

The Channel Error Summary table provides detailed

modulation quality statistics for a selected channel/

layer. Phase and Magnitude Error traces are available to

examine error over time. Use the Channel/Layer tab of the

Demodulation Properties tab to select a despread channel.

89600B VSA is the industry-leading measurement software for evaluating and troubleshooting wireless signals in R&D. PC-based and supporting numerous measurement platforms, the 89600B provides the fl exibility and sophisticated measurement tools essential to fi nding and fi xing signal problems.

X-Series advanced measurement applications provide embedded format-specifi c, one-button measurements for X-Series analyzers. With fast measurement speed, pass/fail testing and simplicity of operation, these applications are ideally suited for design verifi cation and manufacturing.
