Acquisi'on  Life  Cycle

Problem: Single user CAx* and the related heterogeneous data force the acquisition life cycle into a serial set of process activities.

*CAx = any computer-aided engineering application (CAD, CAE, FEA, CAPP, CAM, etc.)

Solution: Multi-user+ CAx and neutral data will “layer, shrink, and collapse” life cycle times by N simultaneous clients. +Multi-user = multiple clients can edit a single CAx model

simultaneously.

Delivery Times Increasing? “There has been about a threefold

increase in delivery time for most major systems...puzzling given enormous

productivity advantages conferred by…Internet and e-mail…advances in

knowledge-management and collaboration tools such as..(CAD)..

(CAM)..”

(From Pre-Milestone A and Early-Phase Systems Engineering: A Retrospective Review and Benefits for Future Air Force Acquisition,

National Research Council, 2008)

So when do you expect to finish the design?

Soon!

If I could just figure out how to merge the surfaces. …..

•  CAx is the productivity bottleneck….one CAx model, one person to edit the model.

Single User CAx Tools NOT Collaborative

Example Warfighter readiness for the Air Force, Army, and Navy is limited by single user CAx and related data heterogeneity.

•  The problem is complicated by a growing supplier chain using different file-based CAx applications.

Example: Boeing uses ~6,450 suppliers (down from ~10,000 in 1997); Goodrich (now UTAS) and PPG Aerospace are 2 Boeing Tier 1 suppliers each with supply chains listed in the 1,000’s, …, ultimately the leaves of the Boeing supply chain touch small manufacturing firms with minimal CAx tools, and untold model conversions and delays to get them access to the Boeing (or UTAS or PPG) data. File based uniformity translations like IGES, STEP, JT, etc., are architecturally not the solution.

•  BYU’s multi-user CAx prototypes reduce modeling times and inherent data interoperability.

22

$1 billion per year and two months of delays on each new US automotive model attributed to CAx interoperability.

Primary Objective

23

Using a consortium of prime defense contractors BYU will develop a CAx application-neutral and data-neutral architecture (database) and prototype for a single-source of all engineering and manufacturing data used in multi-user CAx.
