Timber Grades are distinguished by gum veins and pockets, insect trails,
spirals and burls. All individual elements provide each timber fl oor with a
unique character.
Premium (select) Grade. Minimum natural variations, providing a clean
modern appearance.
Character (standard) Grade. Beautiful variations in grain as well as natural
features such as gum veins and insect trails.
Feature Grade. Unique rustic aged appearance with extenuated natural
features including gum vein, knots, face checking and insect travels.
Timber Grades
* Janka hardness rating. The Janka hardness of a particular timber is a good indicator
of its resistance to wear and denting. The higher the number, the greater the hardness.

Years of experience ensure Finlayson’s have perfected

conditions and applications.

Over particleboard or plywood. Timber fl ooring can be nailed or
glued directly to particleboard or plywood.
In apartments. We can install traditional solid fl ooring in
apartments providing appropriate sound reduction requirements.
Over concrete. Our installation techniques include direct stick
to concrete or installation over plywood and battens.
Floating fl oors. Quick and easy installations, engineered, pre-
fi nished fl oating fl oors can be laid over any level, fl at, structurally
sound fl oor.
Fixed to stairs. We can fi x fl ooring to existing stairs or over
plywood to concrete stairs.
Parquetry. We install an extensive range of designs in a variety
of timber species.
Sand and polish. If your fl oors need restoring we can help,
alternatively we include fi nishing in all supply and installation quotes.
Staining is also available.
Supply only. If you are a DIY renovator we supply all the
products and advice you require.
InstallingOngoing value and peace of mind in every project.
We specialise in the installation of premium quality timber fl oors.
To keep your fl oor looking good and
wearing well Finlayson’s recommends:
• Waiting for 48 hours from the
application of the last coat
of varnish before placing furniture.
• Using door mats to reduce dirt, sand
and grit scratches. Hall runners and
small rugs are useful to collect dirt that
scratches fl oors.
• Rotating rugs and installing curtains or
blinds to reduce direct sunlight which
will gradually fade, darken or change
the shade of all hardwood fl ooring.
• Purchasing an antistatic mop to remove
dust and dirt.
• Removing high heeled shoes to prevent
dents.
• Trimming pets nails and claws to reduce
scratches.
• Fitting protective felt pads to furniture to
stop scuffi ng.
• Avoiding harsh detergents, abrasive
cleaners, steam mops and over wetting
a fl oor when cleaning (use a pH neutral
fl oor cleaner for stubborn dirt).
• Maintaining an ambient temperature to
avoid dryness that may cause gaps,
and moisture increases that may cause
cupping.
Finlayson’s recommends the most appropriate fl ooring fi nish for
your chosen species and its application. There are four broad
ranges of fi nishes available:
Oil based. Less wear resistant fi nish requiring more frequent
maintenance, darkens with age, unlikely to edge bond boards, matt
to gloss levels.
Solvent borne polyurethane. High wear resistance, darkens
with age, reduced risk of edge bonding boards when applied over
appropriate sealer, matt to very high gloss levels.
Composite (mix of oil-based & solvent borne polyurethane).
Less wear resistant fi nish requiring more frequent maintenance,
darkens with age, unlikely to edge bond boards, matt to gloss
levels.
Water borne. Moderate to high wear resistance, less darkening
with age unlikely to edge bond boards when applied over
appropriate sealer, matt to gloss levels.
