Agriculture has once again added enough twists and turns to make the business exciting, refreshing and challenging all at the same time. Grain production has been at record highs but grain movement has been a real challenge. As many of you know, we have been having very strong prices for feeder cattle, culled cattle and cattle for breeding stock. Old man winter has been grouchier and nastier than ever. There is any number of reasons to get in, stay in or get out of the agricultural business. But for those of us brave enough to still be in the cattle business we must really love it, especially with the winter we have been having-Crazy cold, insane amount of wind and more than adequate snow cover have made this winter get real stale real quick. There is a fine line between brave and stupid and when we walk out to check calving cows in January and February of 2014 it has to be questioned which side of the line we are on sometimes. What leads us to believe we are on the right side of the line is when we reap the fruits of our labours, have successful calf crops and, to be honest, just the shear love of the critters we toil over each day. With all this in mind we would like to present to you our 2014 Blue Collar animals.

It is amazing how quickly time marches on. There has been a great many changes to our sale throughout the years. The change that we are most proud of is the improvement in the quality of our offering from one year to the next. It is our belief that each year the cattle we bring to town are of higher quality, offer unique genetics, have more manageable birth weights and have better performance.

The Blue Collar Bull Sale group has been working very hard to provide new and fresh genetics as well as tried and true ones for all our past and future customers. Our sale offering is the result of our pursuit of “Affordable, Honest, Hard working cattle that’ll get’er done”.

The bulls are feed grain and hay which are tested and analyzed to create a balance ration to maximize feed efficiency, promote growth, testicle and semen development, grow good hair coats and provide longevity. The bulls are held in large pens or pastures for ample exercise and roaming.

We all have young families and our cattle need to be content around children. Cattle that are easy to handle are essential in all our operations; therefore, good temperament in all our bulls is a must.

Throughout the catalogue you will find an entire host of information to aid you in your bull or heifer selection. We used Imprint quite extensively in our herd for the past two years. The genetics are unique and interesting to us and Canada. There are only 219 progeny registered in Canada this year. Imprint has proven to produce long spined, deep sided and excellent profiling cattle. They also tend to weigh very well. His EPD’s were a highlight feature for us. His weaning weight is the top 1%, yearling weight in top 6% and scrotal in top 15%. The Imprint progeny come out as calving ease, very good will to live and aggressive calves. In the spring of 2011 we were in the market for a bull. Our travels lead us to the Short Grass Sale in mid April. We had selected a variety of bulls in the catalogue but upon our arrival we discovered our favorite bull CFS Bismarck 11X. This bull was the deepest, broadest, biggest nutted and most structurally sound bull at the sale. This was of course our opinion. After the sale Bob told us that the dam to 11X was an awesome 2 year old. It should be noted that over the past two years this cow has had the high selling bull calf in the Short Grass sale. Unfortunately, we lost this bull last spring so this will be the last opportunity to acquire some of these fabulous genetics. We have a very nice group of 11X females in our replacement pen. The future of these females looks very promising here at Northern View. Bismarck 11X puts a great deal of depth, shape, style, structural soundness and hair into his progeny. This is a very nice sire group of bulls. If you are selecting a Bismarck you may be able to throw them in a pen, chuck a dart, take the bull you hit and have yourself a great sire.

Will Role Model

In our quest for some unique and upcoming genetics we decided to utilize Role Model. 2013 provided us with only a few calves but in 2014 we have a few more. Role Model himself has calving ease, very good performance, excellent eye appeal and well above average scrotal development. With only 61 progeny currently registered in Canada this will be a unique opportunity to select a bull or heifer of this up and coming young sire. Here we have a bull that we call Joey. He was one of our show string bulls this fall. Joey’s claim to fame is that he is a calving ease bull with great performance. He had a 915lb weaning

weight and a 1457 yearling weight with a 3.39lbs gain per day from weaning to yearling weight. This quiet halter broke bull is a deep sided stylish bull that will catch your attention when you walk in the pen. Ruth 81S has been a very good powerful female for us. She has had 4 bulls which have all made the Blue Collar cut. Her bulls are all performance powerful bulls. Last year a maternal brother sold to Wilmo Angus-Pense. We also have a very good female from her working in our herd. I would encourage you to keep females from this bull as I am sure they will be good ones. Well here is a real power big beef bull. “Moose” as we call him because of his size, has the numbers, size and weight to put pounds in to his calves. He has gained 3.77 lbs per day from weaning. 76A had a weaning weight of 876lbs, yearling weight of 1479lbs and a yearling ratio

of 114. Moose was a bull in our show string this fall. He was admired for his many outstanding qualities. Upward 76A comes from a very long line of strong females. His mother, grandmother and numerous Princess females continue to produce quality cattle which are used in our herd and other herds. The sire to 76A, Upward 93Y was purchased by Glen Gabel Angus at Agribition 2011. I spoke with Glen this spring and he is pleased with 93Y and the birth weight and style of his progeny. We had a daughter from Upward 93Y at Agribition this fall. She was purchased by Swan Hills Ranch-Swan River, Manitoba. Upward 73Y is an impressive bull in his genetics and his numbers. Prices of cattle are very strong at this point in time. We used a great deal of Upward genetics to try to provide growth, performance and style in our herd. As a result, we hope that our bottom line and yours will improve. Look to Moose to add pounds to your cattle.

Bismarck 95A is a moderate birth weight bull that pushed the scale down at more than acceptable numbers at both weaning and yearling weights. He gained 3.46 lbs/day to 365 days old.

Great performance in his pedigree with Lucy’s and Heritage on the bottom side. His dam, 75X, is a neat young cow who somehow broke her leg at 3 months of age. Of course she was a beautiful heifer calf we were very excited about. As luck would have it the vet could not repair her leg. He suggested we shoot her or just see what happens. Well obviously we just saw what happened and we have been very pleased. Her first calf sold at Canadian Western Agribition’s Masterpiece Sale to Nu Horizon Angus, Lipton, SK.

Well you have heard me talk about the Thunder deal at our place in the past. We have had a number of Thunder progeny go through the Blue Collar and other sales. They are always very

well received for their ease of calving, eye appeal and great performance weights and numbers. The Thunder females we have working in our herd raise great calves, have great udders and make us glad we used this semen. We have sold very good Thunders in this sale but it is my opinion that this is the most complete Thunder we have had in our sale to date. Thunder 98A offers an exceptional calving ease at -1.0 and above average weaning and yearling weights. Now with the Quantum and Thunder combination there is little doubt that there will be a lot of maternal in this bull. This bull also has a bucket of nuts. In recent feeder sales the steers around 800 lbs have been fetching $1400 ish. Now if you can get calves that within 7-8 months weigh 800 lbs then that is a decent return on your cattle dollar. What attracted us to him were his calving ease numbers, performance numbers, eye appeal, scrotal development and the quality of his dam. We guarantee to provide you with a breeding bull for the season. Delivery The Blue Collar Bull Sale group will assist with delivery where ever possible. Receive a $50 discount on your bull purchased if you take your bull home the day of or the day after the sale. Free delivery on bulls purchased within a 100 mile radius. Over 100 mile radius, delivery and cost to be worked out between the buyer and the individual consignor to the sale. Bulls returned to the consignor’s farm must be insured. The buyer then assumes full responsibility for the bull. Proper care and attention will be given to all bulls returned to the farm. Bulls returning to the consignor’s farm will be kept at no charge until May 1 with a cost of $2/day after May 1. We would ask that the buyers work with us to have all bulls delivered prior to June 1.
