God Gave Us the 10 CommandmentsGod gave each of us his law (rules to obey).

There are many parts to God’s law.

Today we will discuss one of the 10 laws or commandments that God gave us to follow.

Page 3: 8th Commandment

The 8th Commandment The 8th Commandment is very short and seems pretty self-explanatory. “Thou Shalt Not Steal.” This commandment is found in Exodus 20

What does it mean to not steal. In other words what is the meaning of the 8th commandment?

Let’s Explore!

Page 4: 8th Commandment

The 8th Commandment As a child, I would simply say that the 8th commandment means that you should not take anything that does not belong to you without asking first! Otherwise you would be stealing!

But, the 8th commandment is much more than just taking something that does not belong to you.

It deals with so many other aspects of stealing.

Page 5: 8th Commandment

Fairness & HonestyDid you know that when you are not being fair or honest, you could also be stealing? Well, that’s true! Being dishonest and unfair is a form of stealing!

Let’s use the example of honesty. If your mom gave you permission to eat three cookies from the cookie jar and you decided to take an extra one, you are now guilty of stealing.

Page 6: 8th Commandment

Fairness & HonestyThis may seem kind of harsh, but by taking an extra cookie from your mom’s jar without permission, fits the definition of stealing (taking something that does not belong to you without permission). This also makes you a dishonest person, and your mom may never trust you to go into the cookie jar again!

Page 7: 8th Commandment

Fairness & HonestyTheir were laws put in place to help control the buying of property. Such things needed to be fair and equal so that everyone would be dealt with properly and no one would steal.

These laws taught the Hebrews how to deal honestly with their brothers.

Theft & Robbery The 8th commandment condemns or prohibits theft and robbery.

This commandment can be very strict, because it requires the payment of wages (money earned) and the payment of debt (money owed).

Page 9: 8th Commandment

Theft & Robbery Solomon can help us understand this. In Proverbs 3:27, it states “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.”

To withhold something from someone means to deny them of that “something.” If the bible tells us NOT to withhold goods from someone that is owed them, then we should not, otherwise, we would be stealing.

Robbing God The law of the land has a law against “petty theft”. This means that what a person has stolen is considered small, minute or insignificant and may not receive much punishment for it. But…

With God there is NO SUCH THING as petty theft. All forms of stealing causes one to be guilty of the 8th commandment.

Robbing God "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed Me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed Thee? In tithes and offerings,” (Malachi 3: 8-10).

Yes! It is possible to rob God and when you do so you are violating the 8th commandment!

How can you steal from God? The above point is from Malachi 3:8-10. God says that when you fail to pay tithes and offerings you are robbing him. In order to maintain the Lord’s house (church), you must do things such as: pay the utility bills, clean the floors, dust the windows, and etc. All of these things require money. We receive that money by bringing forth our tithes and offerings.

Robbing God As children or pre-teens you may also pay tithes.

When you receive an allowance from your parents, you should set aside a percentage for God.

If you are working a summer job or a part-time job, you should set aside a percentage to give to God.

If you make a small income by babysitting or cutting the neighbors lawn, you should set aside a percentage to give to God.

The goal here, is to not be found guilty of the 8th commandment!
