TREND- SETTING

Thomas Zettner, Head of Frontend Technologies, Continental

Driverless cars and smart factories are currently getting a lot of attention. In both cases, man is presented as the victim. But digitization is not an end in itself. It is significantly improving prosperity thanks to further development across entire sectors of industry and value-added chains.

Wednesday, November 911:15 am – 11:45 am

Man versus machine? Anything but.

Many electronics manufacturers are still not aware of whether and how they can profit from Industry 4.0. They need solutions that can be implemented right now with existing manufacturing execution systems (MES) and machinery. Products with smart functions open up unimagined possibilities in terms of production control and production flow. PCBs with integrated intelligence, for example, delivery faster and simpler process cycles.

50 Percent Faster Flipping

The ASYS SIGNUM 4000 laser marking system sets new standards with an even more power-ful flip station and a high-precision axis sys-tem.The PCB flip time has been reduced by up to 50%, and marking accuracy has been in-creased from 150 µm to 100 µm@5σ.

Response Times Under a Minute

The CONSIDUS dry storage cabinet achieves a relative humidity of under 3% in less than a minute after the door has been closed. The economic system therefore provides ideal pro-tection for highly sensitive components under defined humidity conditions. Active component drying is also available.

The Unique Product World of the ASYS Group

Smart Option Taking the

Smartwatch Market by Storm

The OPTILIGN option accelerates the printing process several times over, opening up new, demanding markets. Powerful printer models demonstrate the power and flexibility of the range. When automotive, volume or large size printers, the EKRA systems deliver exceptional diversity and scalability.

Sorting 4000 Solar Cells into

72 Categories per Hour

The new high-speed sorter makes the success-ful “Alignus 2.0” metallization line complete. It will also be possible in the future to monitor ASYS metallization lines from a tablet and smartwatch.

PARIO 1000 Automates Laser Labeling

The new tray handling system with integrated H-Portal covers a large working area, accurately reaching every position on the tray. Combined with a laser system and a product carrier sys-tem, the machine automates the labeling pro-cess.

Linking the Real and Digital Worlds

ASYS uses a smart augmented reality headset to combine virtual information with the real world, revolutionizing service, saving time and keeping downtimes to a minimum. The concept is shown for the first time on a DIVISIO panel separation system.

Increase in Productivity by up to 60%

Decoupling from the depaneling and testing pro-cess means that the DIVISIO 6000 panel depan-eling system achieves a sensational cycle time of under four seconds without changing the pro-cess requirements. Combined with 100% cut control of the single circuit, the system can de-panel in parallel, as well as loading and unloading sorted units with a second gantry axis.

Cooperation Between Product Sections

The Life Science business unit is exploiting group synergies to develop new approaches and automation options for pharmaceutical, di-agnostics and medical technology. The result is a completely new product range, optimized and adapted to meet the high quality requirements of the industry.

Keeping up the Pace on the Way to the Smart Factory

“Innovation is an essential driver of our success. We are open to new ideas and act quickly and decisively. This commitment is shared and fol-lowed by all ASYS employees. What we achieve together is much more than the sum of what we can achieve as individuals. This is why we're able to take a pioneering role in Industry 4.0 and make great strides towards our end goal with ambitious solutions.

The ASYS name comes from "automation sys-tems". Our aim is to optimize and automate manufacturing systems in electronics, solar and life science. The breadth of our product portfolio leads to synergies that extend our expertise and refine our products.

And we are constantly expanding our range. Be-sides machines and lines, we now cover also cleanroom systems and consumables. With PULSE, we provide software solutions and "Industry 4.0 devices". We link up complex pro-duction workflows and support machine opera-tors with smartwatches and robots. Database systems monitor, safeguard and lock the set process steps right through to material logis-tics. This includes material storage cabinets and associated transfer and buffer elements. Intel-ligent software ensures that the right material is used by the right user at the right time. "We want ASYS to stand for the most advanced pro-duction on the market. This is why we provide comprehensive solutions that give our custom-ers a decisive advantage."

Werner Kreibl: "We want ASYS to stand for the most advanced production on the market."

The ASYS Group Technology Days are always an important milestone. We set new goals and reflect on the past. Werner Kreibl and his son Florian Ritter talk and respond to questions about their view of the ASYS Group and what they are planning for the future.

Werner Kreibl has been at the head of the ASYS

Group for more than 20 years with his business asso-

ciate and co-founder, Klaus Mang. Starting out as a

2-person company, ASYS has developed into a global

player in automation technology. More than 1000 em-

ployees work for the ASYS Group world-wide. Kreibl

was always and remains the motivator behind using

new digital technologies.

Florian Ritter: "We are presenting a Smart Factory at the 2016 Technology Days."

“Production systems are becoming more and more flexible. Insular solutions that separate complex processes and make them indepen-dent of each other are commonly used and re-quire higher-level digital networking solutions. Material logistics closely coordinated with pro-duction also plays a major role. Production cells have to be loaded, and necessary equipment, such as screens and pastes, needs to be avail-able on the spot.

We are presenting a Smart Factory at the 2016 Technology Days, which demonstrates exactly this concept. We separate the central processes:marking, printing, placing and de-paneling.There will be a live show with a robot supplying the production islands and transport-

ing and changing magazines without any user intervention. There will be another robot at the manual workstation, mounting components.

Another area we are pursuing is accelerating the setup process for line solutions. We are working on flexible setup concepts with RFID and intelligent products that optimize and cal-ibrate themselves. Important projects include complete networking of a production line and intelligent exchange of information between systems from a large variety of manufacturers.

This is taking us a step closer to relocating the setup process to a monitor workstation. A lot is going to change!"

Werner Kreibl, Managing Director and Owner of the ASYS Group, and Florian Ritter, Prod-uct Portfolio Develop-ment ASYS Group

Florian Ritter worked in software development for

many years. After completing an MDA in General

Management, he took on the role of business de-

velopment at the site in Shanghai. He came back

home a year ago and took on responsibility for Busi-

ness & Product Portfolio Development. Ritter wants

to expand PULSE and the software portfolio in the

coming years.

Industry 4.0 is not a Closed Process Erwin Beck and Karin Walter report on how ASYS lives and implements Industry 4.0.

Alongside changes to products, Industry 4.0 also has an influence on the organization as a whole. Hardware and software development have to come together as much as possible. Departments that were previously autonomous have to act as part of team. Driven by Industry 4.0, we are observing the development of technology in other markets. We are inte-grating achievements in robotics and augmented reality very quickly into our development to create new solutions with added value. Industry 4.0 is not a closed process, but a driver that will challenge us in the future."

“Fundamental improvement of products and their use is a key promise of 'Industry 4.0'. I presented the issue to the company already back in 2012, and we immediately tried to develop our own vision of it. Implementing Industry 4.0 is technically very complex. Nevertheless it is my intention to illuminate the socio-technical system behind it and not just consider the technology on its own. This also means enabling the best possible interac-tion between humans and technical systems to design the production of the future as efficiently as possible.

Integrating newly developed IT components and software will rapidly in-crease the complexity of our systems. Our greatest challenge for integra-tion is to reduce this complexity in the user interface. Google, for example, has a highly complex backend, but is a simple entry field for users. Com-panies will only remain competitive in the future if they offer users the best possible support, also via intuitive interfaces. We have done that, for example, with SIMPLEX and PULSE. Technology is always in the back-ground of our awareness and is increasingly becoming an integral, almost invisible part of our work and personal life. "Hybrid products" are becom-ing more and more common, for example, when software gives machines new functionality beyond their physical value. In the past, an expert could tell you the function of a product directly from the components. Now, the functions are only visible in the user interface.

Karin Walter: "Industry 4.0 is where the interface turns objects into products."

After obtaining a technical degree, Karin Walter studied industrial design in

Germany, Israel and the U.S.She lectured at the Ulm University of Applied

Sciences and then went on to complete a Master's Degree in Communi-

cation Planning. Walter joined the ASYS Group in 2005 and founded the

Corporate Identity division. She now develops strategic communication

concepts for the entire ASYS Group.

Erwin Beck: "Our motto is: be open.."

companies want to join the PULSE network.

Our motto is: be open to new possibilities in human-machine commu-nication thanks to new digital technologies and collaboration between companies to provide customers with the ideal complete solutions."

"A separate smartwatch for every machine supplier? There can only be one solution in the smart factory!Obviously. I am committed to making PULSE this one solution. The user should be able to control all the machines from different manufacturers in a production line with just one software solu-tion.

We see PULSEONE as an open platform for partner systems and our own machines. In cooperation with our partners, we are working on making the software even more attractive to customers. Not only because they get an overview of the entire line, but also because they get the right in-formation at the right time in the right place. We are currently working on the details of what such information has to be, from machine to machine, from process to process.

We are proud that PULSE is an Industry 4.0 solution that is no longer only on the drawing board, but actually in use by our customers. That is why there is not just interest in ASYS from the press, but more and more

Erwin Beck is a networker and visionary. After years of experience in elec-

tronics production, he not only has the contacts, but the necessary vision as

well. As head of product management, he works with his team to scout out

ideas and developments that could improve the production of electronics in

the future.

"Our cleaning systems are moving right next to the line."

Bert Schopmans, Sales and Application Manager in Germany at Kolb

By using PULSE, Kolb has found that physical distance no longer plays a role. Once a cleaning cycle is complete, the Kolb system notifies PULSE. The operator gets a message on his or her tasklist and can then fetch the stencil whenever the task fits best into his or her workflow. Cooperation with Kolb, as a longstanding partner, has given the PULSE team particular insight into planning more complex production environments. The question is how PULSE can perfectly organize distances.

Read here what "PULSE members" have to say about how they benefit from PULSE.

The PULSE networkis growing

Josef Harrer, Branch Manager/General Manager at Parmi

"We have an incredible amount of data from part inspection. We are still finding out what information our customers need most urgently on the tablet."

Transferring the live data from an inspection system to PULSE adds another exiting com-ponent to the mix. The product is monitored and quality data can be accessed. ASYS is working with Parmi to extract the right data for mobile use.

"Timing is everything. The tasklist helps our customers keep a clear overview during placement."

Klaus Kölbel, Sales Manager at Fuji

Time plays a major role. Particularly when it comes to component placement. PULSE brings tasks and messages straight to the smartwatch. You can't ignore a watch vibrating on your wrist. The operator is guaranteed to respond quickly.

ASYS is delighted to have Fuji, a recognized manufacturer of assembly systems, as part of the PULSE network. The first PULSE lines with integrated Fuji systems have already been installed.

"You should always know what's happening... System monitoring is increasingly important for our processes, such as soldering."

Michael Hanke, Marketing Manager at Rehm

For ASYS, Rehm is a longstanding partner. The two companies are almost neighbors and their ranges of machinery also complement each other perfectly.

Rehm was also one of the first cooperation partners for Industry 4.0 as well and has made live data from its ovens available to the PULSE software. The monitoring data can be accessed via PULSE. This means that users, for example, can check the operating mode or messages on the go.

Detlef Beer, Product Development of AOI Assembly Inspection at Viscom

"We are delighted to be represented in the PULSE line with our 3D solder paste inspection. This is how we do intelligent process optimi- zation for Industry 4.0."

Viscom inspection systems supply applicable data to the EKRA printers to improve the process automatically. Complemented by a VEGO buffer, the material flow can be regulated and OK PCBs can be fed to the line as needed. The fact that Viscom is now also connecting solder paste inspection (SPI) to PULSE alongside the AOI systems is a further indication of excellent collaboration on the way to the smart factory.

ASYS Group | Many Minds – One Mission ASYS Group | Many Minds – One Mission28 29

ASYS started thinking about Industry 4.0 early on and has developed innovative solutions for the smart factory. To do so, the company uses software applications for tablets, smartwatches and autonomous transport robots. The goal is to assist humans in production and make the rapidly growing complexity and data flow manageable. The PULSE Human Centered Solutions product division has been created for just

this purpose. The division supplies software solutions, connections

and devices to enable smart factory applications. The PULSEONE software, for example, networks the human user with machines and other supporting production systems. All with the aim of increasing clarity, efficiency and productivity.

Freeing humans from monotonous work has long been the motivation for developing industrial robots. This will bring the focus back onto the abilities that define humans,

such as creativity and lateral thinking. Today's collaborative robots interact with humans and are becoming partners to fulfill complex tasks. Mounting components on PCBs is one example. ASYS is using a collaborative robot at VEGO manual workstations. It will

be presented for the first time at ASYS Technology Days 2016.

The collaborative robot

The transport robotThe autonomous transport robot changes its attachments itself and can

therefore transport different materials (feeders, trays, magazines, cleaning rolls, stencils, pastes, small load carriers, etc.). As it can freely select any attach-ment, it can alternate between tasks. Besides transport, the robot can, for example, also clean the floor. The robot navigates freely through the production hall, even across sev-eral floors. It moves safely without posing a risk to people or objects or causing damage.

ASYS has been using an autonomous transport robot since Productronica 2015 and is integrating the robot into various processes.

Knowledge Grows by Networking

OPAKInnovations are a key factor for the success of the ASYS Group. ASYS is involved in various national and international R&D projects to drive forward new technologies and discover new perspectives.

Alongside renowned companies, ASYS is constantly working in the OPAK research project to develop automation systems more easily, more quickly and more cost-effectively.

In the future, plug-and-produce machine components will make flexi-ble and transformable manufacturing systems possible. The compo-nents are intelligent and configure themselves automatically. Three focus areas are defined in the OPAK project to simplify the engineer-ing of manufacturing systems: Development of fully integrated com-ponents, functional 3D engineering and distributed system control systems. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).

Efficient, Fast and Easy Engineering with OPAK

ASYS is active in a range of different research projects

Rock-Star openMOS

The Rock-Star research project consortium is working on revolu-tionizing a high-cost process step in Si solar cell production. New rotary printing processes and innovative system concepts are be-ing developed for front and back metallization. The project is fund-ed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the “R&D for photovoltaics” funding program. ASYS man-ages the collaborative project, working closely with prestigious project partners such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE).

Rock-Star – Rotary Printing Methodsfor the Manufacture of Si Solar Cells

The openMOS research project funded by the European Union, firstly, develops and integrates plug-and-produce components in production systems, such as robots and machinery. It is also driving forward full networking of systems with higher-level con-trol and ERP software. Cloud software agents are being used to deliver artificial intelligence in this project. Software agents col-lect all the manufacturing data, filter it and make decisions inde-pendently. The agents work autonomously and are adaptive. This makes it possible for a production line to scale up independent-ly, such as in the event of an automatic change of product.
