Advent — and Christmas—returns to us every year like a cycle, until the final and unending Ad-vent, the Parousia, when Jesus comes again in glory.

Parish Council Meeting There will be a meeting for all Parish Council members on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. All members are asked to attend.

OLBS Healing Mass On Friday, December 15, 2017 at 6:00 p.m., we will have our Healing Mass, followed by the Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction.

Due to the Second Friday of December falling on December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Con-ception, the healing mass was moved to the third Friday in December. Please invite your family and friends who are needing spiritual and physical healing to come to this Healing Mass.

JOHN PREPARES THE WAY

The appearance of the Lord Jesus to Israel began with the ministry of John in the desert and by the river Jordan. All four evangelists present the work of John as a prologue to the public min-istry of Jesus. Like the book of Genesis, Mark speaks of the beginning—this time the beginning of the Gospel of Jesus, the Messiah and the Son of God. The Gospel opens with a desert scene where John, a character embedded in his desert surroundings, calls people to repentance. While some ”theologians” in Israel (the scribes and the Pharisees) will see him as possessed by demons because of his solitary life, singular diet, and strange “fashion statement” crowds will flock to him seeing in him a prophet of the Lord. It has been so long that the voice of a prophet has not been heard in the land, and this time that the voice of John reverberates in the desert, the peo-ple are only too happy to realize that God is again speaking to his people. Their famine is about to end— not a famine of bread, or thirst for water, but for hearing the work of the Lord (cf Am 8:11). Today, as we hear once more the cry of the Bap-tist at Mass, let us relish the feeling of excitement and hope. The spirit of Advent comes to us to awaken us to the truth that Jesus’ coming, as pre-pared by John, is not simply an event of the past.

SECOND SUNDAY OF

ADVENT PRAYER O holy, patient, and loving God, in this season of grace-filled longing, we await the coming of your Son and our Savior. It is difficult for us to remember that this is a holy time.

There are many distractions: commitments seem to pile up, and expectations are high. In the midst of our busy world, our busy lives, we need your help to re-mind us of what is important and necessary. While many of those things that we do not need will come to us in packages gleaming and bright, the one gift that will last comes from you alone, gracious God, as we grow in our awareness of your love. Bless us, our fam-ily and friends, and the food and the company that we share. Increase in us a growing urgency to celebrate

the birth of your Son, in whose name we pray. Amen.

REFLECTION Behold the Lord will come. John [the Baptist] knows that God is preparing something very great, something for which he is to be the instrument; and he himself points in the direction that the Holy Spirit shows him. We know much more now about what it was that God had in mind for humanity. We know Christ and His Church, we have the sacraments. The doctrine of sal-vation has been perfectly marked out for us . . . We know that the world needs Christ to reign, we know that the happiness and salvation of all mankind de-pend on Him. We have Christ Himself; the same Christ whom John the Baptist knew and announced. We are witnesses and precursors. We have to bear witness and at the same time we have to show others the way. Our responsibility is great, because to be Christ’s witnesses implies first and foremost that we should try to live our lives according to his doctrine, that we should struggle to make our actions remind others of Jesus and His most loveable personality.
