with Father Michael Wednesday was a non-stop, but remarkable day. Two hundred of our young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Indeed this is a great moment as they come and accept the power of God at work through the Holy Spirit. This is an important time in their life as they approach high school and move toward adulthood. Their sharing in the sacrament represents a long journey that led them to this point. A moment like this does not happen on its own. In addition to the work of each young man and woman it is important to acknowledge the role of their parents and family. We are grateful to our catechists who are committed to sharing and teaching the faith. But, there is also an array of others who work long and hard to bring together a great day like this. We thank our music ministry, our sacristans, those who decorated the church. All of these many aspects are coordinated by our Religious Ed Office. So, I extend a special thank you to Ellen Fox, our Director and Liz Shea, the Religious Ed Secretary. Thank you to the many helping hands that created a prayerful and beautiful experience. And to add to the day, it was a wonderful occasion to welcome back Fr. Jim. He conferred the Sacrament in his new role as Vicar. It was ironic that as pastor, I need to formally present the candidates to him, but in reality he knows many of the Confirmandi far better than I do. It was a privilege for me to be able to welcome Fr. Jim back here. One of the unique experiences of priesthood is that whenever we return to a place where we have served there is always a sense of “coming home.” It is the connection to so many people that always makes it a rich, but sometimes bittersweet moment. Thank you Fr. Jim for continuing to add to the life and spirit of this wonderful community. Fall officially arrived last Sunday afternoon. We have been blessed with some amazing autumn weather. You find yourself in that in between time of looking for a blanket in the evening, but wearing short sleeved shirts during the day. It is a wonderful experience to breath in that refreshing autumn air. I have not fired up the heating system yet in the house. I pray that will not become a crazy new adventure for me to report. Next week is Respect Life Sunday. We pray that there will be a deeper appreciation for God’s Gift of Human Life. We ask for the ability to always respect the dignity of each and every person. Peace and Blessings.

Celebrating the Spirit

Classes for levels 2 through 7 begin the week of October 14th. All Catechists for these levels are to attend scheduled meetings to get books, lesson plans and important grade level information. Please contact the Religious Ed office if you have not received a calendar with these meetings. All Level 7 students and their parents are reminded that they must attend one of our upcoming meetings. This

information on upcoming meetings was sent home previously and can also be found on our website, pothc88.org, under the Religious Education Announcements page.

All students entering first grade need to be enrolled in Religious Education for the fall. Level 1 religious instruction will begin in Mid November. Parents of registered level 1 students will receive a letter in the mail soon inviting them to a meeting where they will get materials and information to teach their children at home. All level 1 students must successfully complete their work before they can move on to level 2 and prepare for Reconciliation and First Eucharist. On September 25, approximately 200 level 8 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We were happy to welcome back Msgr. James McNamara as the Confirming Vicar. Recently, Fr. Jim was named Vicar of the Central Vicariate for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. We congratulate him on his new appointment and we congratulate our students for successfully completing their Sacraments of Initiation. Now that this year’s students have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Sacrament will not be administered again until the Fall of 2015. Holy Cross Parish is now in compliance with the diocese which requires that all students preparing for sacraments have a full two year program of study. As we prepare for the upcoming Religious Education year, we still have a need for people to teach religion in their homes to our children. To be a Catechist, all you need is a desire to share your faith. We look forward to hearing from you. A Catechist is needed in the following area: As always, if you should have any questions or concerns regarding the Religous Education Program at Holy Cross, please contact our office at 265-2200 ext 12.

Thank you!

Here at Holy Cross, we are approximately $9,000 away from reaching our 2013 goal of $64,800 for the Catholic Ministries Appeal. When payments reach 100% of our goal, we receive a rebate of 20%. Last year, we met our goal for the CMA and received a rebate of $12,640. The rebate enabled us to purchase a new piano which you can hear Brian, our Music Director, play at our Sunday Masses. We were also able to purchase a much needed boiler, repair broken doors, freshen up rooms in our church building with a coat of paint, and treat ourselves to a parish Family Fun Day for our 25th Anniversary! If you would like to contribute to the Catholic Ministries Appeal which helps our community and our own parish, please fill out the form below and drop in the collection basket or return to the parish office. No amount is too big or too small! Thank you!
