daily Mass at 12:05 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, April 20.

Your response to our Sunday Masses and services has made clear the need we all have to pray together, to hear God’s word, and to witness the Eucharist and receive Him spiritually into our hearts.

This pandemic prevents us from being in church together but nothing can separate us from the love

F irst Reading: Acts 10:34-43

In this portion of the Acts of the Apostles, Peter proclaims to his fellow Jews that Jesus has been raised from death by God. Although executed by the Romans, Jesus will bring justice and forgiveness.

S econd Reading: Colossians 3:1-4

Our second reading comes from an early Christian letter. The author teaches that followers of Christ have died to sinful behaviors.

G ospel: John 20:1-9

This reading from John’s Gospel describes the discovery of the empty tomb. The mysterious beloved disciple seems to grasp what has happened more readily than does Peter.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect

on the Readings for the week of April 19

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you . . . ” And when he had said this, he

breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit . . . ”

[Thomas] said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks

and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

John 20: 19-31

You can still see the indentation in his forehead. It happened when his teenage son, in a drunken rage, hurled his guitar into his father’s skull. Emergency surgery and weeks of painful rehab followed — but the moment was a horrifying wake-up call for a very troubled young man who agreed to a rehab of his own. After a great deal of hard work, the family was reconciled. Look at the picture of father and son at the young man’s wedding. You can see the joy and love between the two — as well as the crease in Dad’s hairline, a “wound” that speaks of reconciling love.

She left a leg behind in Iraq. On patrol one night, her unit was ambushed by snipers. When a

member of her team was hit, she instinctively turned around to pull him to safety. That’s when she stepped on the IED — and suddenly everything went dark. The other members of the unit managed to get them both out — and home. She’s now a wife and mom. To all who hear the story she reluctantly tells if asked, her prosthetic leg is a “sign” of courageous selflessness.

That night will always be a blur to her. She recalls little after the ambulance arrived; all she

remembers clearly are the doctor’s words, “I’m sorry, but the damage was extensive.” Those words still cut like a knife. The love of her life – her funny, brilliant, creative, loving husband – died that night in an automobile accident. He was 31. Now it is just she to bring up their four-year-old Chloe. And she will. Just as they planned to do together. Only now his presence is one of happy memories of what love can be. Her grief is a “nail mark” of persevering hope.

When Thomas refuses to believe, Jesus invites him to touch his wounds, to probe the marks

of the nails and touch the scars on his body. Jesus’ wounds are signs of his presence among us in our frail humanity. They are also signs of God’s compassion and peace in the midst of our

own crucifixions, reasons for hope in new life stemming from the crosses we bear. We all have wounds and “nail marks” that are signs of the wisdom and hope that can only be realized in brokenness, in suffering for the sake of another, in pain endured in our own crucifixions. This Easter, may our own wounds and hurts empower us to bring comfort, healing and justice to our world — as does Jesus’s broken body. (Connections)

Happy Easter! Father John

JESUS IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS!

The Resurrection of Christ is a foundational Christian belief. We believe that Jesus rose from the dead and that we, too, will rise from the dead upon his return. But have you ever thought about why the teaching of the Resurrection is so important for us as Christians?

Adults: What are my thoughts about Jesus’ Resurrection? What are my hopes and expectations about the Resurrection on the last day?

Children: What will heaven be like? Who are all the people I want to be with in heaven?

Family Perspective: In the Easter Gospel we hear about how the disciples found the tomb empty three days after Jesus' death. We are also told that they do not yet understand the Scriptures or that Jesus had been raised from the dead. That understanding gradually unfolded for the disciples as they began to experience the risen Lord. Similarly, our understanding of Jesus' Resurrection unfolds for us throughout our lives. In the weeks ahead, we will hear how the first disciples moved from confusion, doubt, and skepticism to faith. Their experience can teach us how we too might receive this gift of faith from God. Gather your family members and ask them to share what they know about the events that happened in the days after Jesus' crucifixion. Read together today's Gospel, John 20:1-9. Reflect together on the Gospel with questions such as these: If you had been among the first disciples who heard that the stone had been removed from Jesus' tomb and that Jesus' body was no longer there, what would you think? What did Mary of Magdala, Simon Peter, and the disciple whom Jesus loved think had happened? Recall that this experience is the first indication Jesus' disciples have that he is risen.

FINANCIAL BLESSINGS Assumption is a Tithing Parish

I am overwhelmingly grateful, and humbled at the level of participation in our livestreamed masses and services during Holy Week and Easter.

For the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday over 2,000 devices logged in to watch. For the Liturgy for the Passion of the Lord and Stations of the Cross, 4,104 and 1,076 devices logged in.

The Easter Vigil, and the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Masses of Resurrection had 1,629, 2,285 and 3,808 devices logged in respectively. God is calling us to church and we are listening.

Our Easter collection to date totals $96,775. The Easter collection last year at this time was $101,425.

Thank you so much for your continued wonderful generous support of Assumption Parish even during this pandemic. I deeply appreciate your sacrificial giving especially during these trying times. You are always in my prayers. We will get through this together!

SEVEN SPIRITUAL STRATEGIES

FOR A TIME OF PANDEMIC

1. Pray. God is listening. I firmly believe that God is with us, as

close as we are to ourselves, and even closer. When I pray, I wait for God to reply, not always knowing how God will reply, but trusting that God will. When I pray for others, such as my mother who lives in another state, I know that they are with me in the time of prayer, as much as if they were in the same room. In God’s presence, we are all united. 2. Stay connected.

I was recently in a self-quarantine for 14 days after my husband fell ill with flu-like symptoms after we returned from Europe. (We are all healthy now.) I found that staying connected through video programs like Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet, or texting or phone calls, were all great ways to stay in relationship with others beyond my quarantine. Human beings are social and need connection. 3. Reach out.

Not ill or self-quarantined? See what the neighbors need. We can still practice social distancing by starting a group chat with the people on our block. When I could not go out, a friend of mine dropped some flowers and a bottle of wine at our house. Social distancing does not mean the end of service. 4. Be grateful.

There is always something for which to be grateful. Always. As I write this, both of my adult children are home with us, and healthy. I am grateful for the shared conversation, the shared meals, and for everyone’s health. Gratitude gives us perspective. 5. Slow down.

I have often wished I had more time for contemplation. Be careful what I wish for! In all seriousness, however, more time to contemplate and watch the sun rise or look at a beautiful tree through my backyard window brings me a sense of peace. Baking bread takes more time than buying it but helps me to stay in the moment while also nurturing others. Perhaps slowing down is a hidden gift. 6. Engage in meaningful work.

Monks have always known this: we need a balance of work, prayer, and leisure in life. I am a teacher so have been putting energy into teaching my university students through remote platforms, holding office hours, and finding creative new ways to help my students to grow and learn. Even for those who are retired or otherwise not employed, tasks like baking, minor household projects that have been put off, or organizing photos into albums can be meaningful work. 7. Love.

Love is contagious. Love, St. Ignatius says, is shown in deeds, not only in words. But it also helps to tell the people whom we love, that we love them. How do you want to share love today?
