† From the Pastor † ruce Larson, in Faith for the Journey, tells the story of a successful factory that made drills. One day the owner told his corporate officials that he was going to retire and that he

had chosen his son as his successor. At the next board meeting, the son asked his four vice-presidents, "What are your goals for the company for the next 5 to 10 years?"

One vice-president replied, "Well, sir, we're looking at new sizes and shapes of different drills."

The son then dropped his bombshell. "I have news for you--there is no market for drills." One could feel the tension in the air. He continued, "From now on we will not think drills. We will not sell drills. We'll sell holes! People don't want to buy a drill; they want to make a hole!"

As they began to think of other ways to create holes--that is, change their attitude from drills to holes –they developed, for instance, technology for using lasers. This and other innovations kept this company in business where its competitors lost large shares of the field and some even went bankrupt.

We cannot always change circumstances or the actions of others, because they are beyond our control. And often we give these things that are beyond our control the power to alter our attitude or our good nature.

But we all have a remarkable power that so often is left unused. It is summed up in a single word: ATTITUDE.

Someone may be selfish and demanding of our time and attention, but we have the power to keep our attitude of generosity at work, and the Lord will bless us for what we give, not hold us accountable for what they take.

Someone says words that wound us deeply, or harm someone we love, and there is no possible way for us to remain their friend. But, we have the power to put into practice an attitude of forgiveness, choosing not to strike back in anger, but instead choosing to bear the burden of pardoning them. In that moment we make a decision to imitate the example of Jesus and pray that they will be forgiven by God for the harm they have done.

We look around and others seem to have a happier home life or a higher standard of living or more opportunities for success. And we are tempted to wonder why God ignores us or loves

them more. But, we have the power to adopt a spirit of gratitude. We profess that we have a loving Father in heaven, watching over and caring for us in every way. And there is no doubt that he who loves us completely also gives us exactly

the best he has to offer. We just don’t see things as clearly as he does.

Our personality, our experience and our desire to avoid discomfort often prevents us from taking up the challenge of changing our attitude about a person or a circumstance. But, remember the blind man in the gospel today. He sat there in his darkness, calling out to Jesus to change his condition. And Jesus invited him to take a leap of faith. He threw off his cloak and stepped out into the darkness to approach the voice of Jesus, and his blindness disappeared.

The same remarkable thing happens to us. As we ask the Lord to give us the power to see as he sees and love as he loves, our attitude takes a new direction. We can’t be sure if our new attitude will change the way others act. It’s like stepping into the dark. But we discover that Jesus gives us the power to be more like him. And that makes us able to see everything in a new light.

IGLESIA CATOLICA ST.

No vendemos taladros eléctrico. Vamos a vender agujeros.

Nuestra personalidad, nuestra experiencia y
