Annual Congregational Meeting and Town Hall Meeting Dates

Town Hall Meetings will take place on Sun. Jan. 20th at 10 a.m. and

Wednesday. Jan. 30th at 7 p.m.

The Annual Meeting will take place on Sun. February 3rd, following

Exploring the Big Questions of Faith: A Learning Opportunity for Adults

Here is an opportunity to spark conversation regarding the Christian faith as it relates to real life for the present time in a compelling way. We meet on Wednesdays at 7:00 to 8:00 in the Garden’s Edge. These sessions are designed for participants to be able to at-tend one, two or as many sessions that you would like to attend. January 16—Religion: Spirituality is Not Enough What role does organized religion play in helping or hindering growth? A second look at our age-old traditions and the church community casts a refreshing view on religion.

January 23—Jesus: The Revolution of Love What does it mean to walk in the way of Jesus? We take a look at a path we may have never imagined.

**Please note that we will not meet Wednesday January 30th because of the scheduled Town Hall meeting.

February 6—Salvation: Abundant Life Now What exactly does it mean to be saved? From what? For what? We con-sider what salvation looks like for the here and now.

February 13—Cross: Where God Is What exactly happened on the cross and what does it mean for the way we un-derstand God? Considering these questions are crucial to the Christian faith.

February 20—Bible: A Book Like No Other Why read the Bible? A simple question leads us to address the issues the church has wrestled with for centuries.

February 27—Church: An Imperfect Family What does it mean to commit ourselves to the church family, for better or for worse? The church as family shows us how these relationships bring joy even in the midst of the messiness and

Faith Formation for Children: From Birth Through 5th Grade Attention Parents! Sunday Morning Faith Formation Classes continue on Sunday Mornings at 10:00 a.m.

Confirmation Classes Confirmation classes continue Sunday’s at 10:00 a.m. with all 6th, 7th and 8th graders meeting in the up-

Adult Classes Continue on Sunday Mornings at 10:00 a.m. Adult classes continue with two different adult classes meeting at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome.

Rehearsal & Program Schedule

WORSHIP CHOIR

The Worship Choir is open to anyone from grade 9 through adult. Rehearsals are every

Thursday, 7:15 - 8:45 p.m. in the music room. Ministry is most Sundays at 11:00 a.m.

HANDBELL CHOIR The Handbell Choir is available to ages from grade 8 to adult. Ringers must be able to read music (either treble or bass clef). The Handbell Choir performs approximately once a month, except during the summer. The choir typically rehearses every other Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Please contact Jim Moler at 301-471-3736 or [email protected] if you are interested in playing regularly in the Handbell Choir or serving as a substitute ringer.

CHILDRENS` MUSIC AND ARTS

Children are invited to participate in a music and arts experience on Sunday morning from

10:40 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. They will be meeting in the upper level double classroom. In addition

to singing and playing instruments occasionally at worship on Sundays.

LITURGICAL DANCE

Rehearsal times/locations/programs to be announced (See Director, Dee Buchanan )

ORCHESTRA

The orchestra consists of members from grades 6 thru adult, on any orchestral instrument,

who can read 3 sharps/flats. Performances and rehearsals to be announced. (See Directors,

Kurt Witt or Jim Moler)

WORSHIP TEAM

Rehearses every Wednesday, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Sanctuary Contemporary Worship Music

ministry on Sundays, 9:00a.m. (See Director, Matt Puziss)

YOUTH ENSEMBLE

The youth ensemble consists of youth from grade 6 through 12th grades, with special

emphasis on contemporary singing and playing techniques. Rehearses every Sunday,

10:50 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in the music room. Programs: Select Sunday mornings through the

year (See Directors, Kurt Witt or Jim Moler)

Zion’s Safety and Security team has been busy caring for your safety during worship. Starting on February 10th access to the church will be

monitored before and during Church. As always you can exit if the need arises. The outside doors will be locked 10 minutes after any Worship Service starts, but the doors will be monitored to allow access to our

members. This will of course require more Safety and security personnel so WE COULD USE YOUR HELP! If you are interested please contact Jim Hoover for more information, 301-371-6500.

Valley Seniors and Friends The next Valley Seniors and Friends Luncheons will take place on March 7th. Please contact the Church

Middletown Food Bank All canned items are needed— especially pork & beans, peas, fruits and

vegetables and SpagettiOs. We are also in need of toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, soap,

ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, BBQ sauce, stuffing mix and gravy. Please

give whatever you can; place items in cart located in hall. Thank you!

Service Opportunities

Clothes Closet is Seeking Volunteers! Please consider volunteering to help at the Clothes Closet. This is an important ministry that

continues to provide much needed clothing and shoes for the families in our community. If you would like to volunteer for Saturday morning or Monday morning please contact the

Weekend Back Pack Ministry The beginning of the new school year brings with it a renewed need for your help with the Weekend

Backpack Ministry. Your donations of specific food items ensures these students receive proper nutri-

tion. Remember, weekends are long when you are hungry. The critical need food items for January February are

canned tuna and chicken. Thank you for your continued support of this much needed ministry

Altar Guild News The Altar Guild really needs some new members. If you are interested, you can stop by the Altar Guild Room after any Sunday morning service to talk to an Altar Guild member

about how you may serve or contact Shirley Ferguson at 301-662-7775 or [email protected].

2019 Flower Chart The 2019 Flower Chart is now posted outside the Living Library. Please sign up if you

would like to provide altar flowers during 2019.

An Opportunity to serve Zion Zion is looking for someone who would like to do the SIGH (Servants in God’s House) Scheduling. It is not that time

consuming and Rosella would be willing to train anyone who would like to take this job over as a volunteer. Knowing excel would be a plus. Possibly several people could share this position. If interested please contact Rosella

Super Bowl Sub Sale Super bowl is just around the corner – Go team!! The Zion Quilters will hold a Super Bowl Sub Sale on Sunday, February 3, 2019. Pickup will be before or after the Annual Meeting in the Social Room. Sub varieties will be ham & cheese, cold cut and turkey. All subs are 8” and will include lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and mayo. Sub cost is $6.00. All subs MUST be preordered by 1/29/2019. Call 301-514-4479 or 301-371-6500 or email [email protected]. Funds raised will go to the His-toric Preservation Fund.

Crafting Retreat with the Zion Knitters and Quilters

Don’t want to be STUCK by the television watching John Wayne now that

Super Bowl Weekend is over….Join us at the Crafting Retreat on Feb 8 & 9,

2019. Any craft is WELCOME. Knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, scrapbook-

ing, quilting…you name it. The fun starts in the Church Social Room.

Come and set up your craft on a table and keep your table set up both Friday & Saturday.

Retreat will start at 8:00 am on Friday and close down Friday evening at 11:00 pm. We

will begin again at 8:00 on Saturday and close down at 5:00pm. Crafters are encouraged

to come and go as needed. Plenty of food, snacks and games will be avail-

able. Free will offering will be encouraged with funds raised going to the

Zion’s Lectern and Pulpit Bibles Repaired

Zion would like to ac-knowledge and thank the family of Mr. & Mrs. George P. Ropp for their monetary gifts to repair the pulpit and lectern Bibles. The Bibles were originally given by their family in 1997.

Tawn O’Connor, Heritage Book and Bible Repair, has completed repair of both the lectern and pulpit Bibles. The lectern Bible was given to Zion in 1997 in loving memory of Mr. & Mrs. George P. Ropp by Mrs. & Mrs. Rudolph S. Brandenburg & Family, Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Brandenburg, Mr. and Mrs. Kirk Talbott, and Mr. & Mrs. Steben Frizzell & Samantha.

After making Christmas cards for Zion members,

decorating gingerbread houses, and putting up lights &

bells at Cone Branch park in December, Safe House

will be doing warmer activities inside as well as going bowling and
