At our bilingual masses we sing a setting of the “Our Father” (“Pater Noster”) that many of our Spanish

masses have learned in the past few years.

Now it’s our turn. During Advent the English 5 PM (Sat.) and 10:30 AM (Sun) Masses will learn the

“Pater Noster;” we will hand out sheet music and run it a few times before mass.

Perhaps, no other words uttered in human history have

greater import for humankind than those spoken by a young

girl in a small, out of the way village. Two thousand years of

history have come about because of this young girl who

dared to say “yes” to God. It is our belief that because of her

“yes” that the Word became flesh and God came to dwell

among us in the person of Jesus, the Messiah of Israel and of

the nations.

Mary is very much a part of the Advent-Christmas story.

Through the centuries the Church has acknowledged and

celebrated her role in the story of redemption. The Gospel of

Luke makes special use of Mary and other women in telling

the Jesus Story.

In the Litany of Loretto (Blessed Virgin), depicted in the

stained glass windows that grace St. Mary’s Church, Mary is

referred to as the “Ark of the Covenant”. One recalls

Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary “blessed is the fruit of your

womb”. The Ark contained the Holy of Holies, the Torah, the

Word of the Lord.

In the Gospel of Luke in the scene of the visitation (chap. 1:39-

56) there is twofold encounter and epiphany. Not only is

there the encounter between Mary and her cousin, Elizabeth,

but more importantly, there is the encounter between the

“fruit of Mary’s womb” and that of the womb of Elizabeth

(Jesus and John). Luke, the historian, states that at the

moment Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting “the infant leaped

in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out

“blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb”.

Last Thursday, December 12, the Church Universal

celebrated the feast of the Virgin of Tepeyac, our Lady of

Guadalupe. There are 2 very significant points to note about

the image of the Virgin on the tilma of Juan Diego that relate

very much to Luke’s theology:

1) Mary is with child: Aztec women during their

pregnancy wore a black band around the waist that was tied

in the front. Such a band is found

in the image, “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

2) Mestizaje: The face of the Virgin reveals the birth of

a new race - the “mixed race” (raza mestiza). Luke

borrows the Jewish feast of Pentecost that celebrates the

Mosaic covenant to explain to the early Christians that the

Church is the new Jerusalem that gathers peoples of all

nations and races into Christ. The image of Guadalupe in

its mestizaje symbolizes the covenant by which Israel is to be

a sign to the nations of the holiness of God.

Also worth noting in the Lukan text are the words of Mary’s

prayer, the Magnificat. Mary praises her Lord because He

has looked at her lowliness and blessed her to do great things

because of Him (Luke 1:47 – 55). Mary is young and Mary is

a woman. In her time, who valued the worth of the young

and of women? Look at Juan Diego, Juan Diego to whom

Mary appeared. In his time, the age of the conquistador,

who valued an Indian? Even today in Mexico to call someone

“indio” or Indian is the same as using the “n” word in the

U. S. Very much a part of the theology of Luke is the role

that the poor and the marginated of society play in the Jesus

story of redemption. For Luke, the marginated are not the

object of the mission of Christ but rather the instrument of

the Lord in bringing about the redemption of humankind. It

is Mary, the unknown and marginated, who serves as the ark

of the covenant who shares that holy Word contained within

her womb all the world.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed art thou among women

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus!”

Tal vez no hay palabras en la historia de la humanidad, que

hayan tenido tanto impacto en la especie humana, que

aquéllas que una jovencita pronunció en aquél pequeño

pueblo. Dos mil años de historia se deben a esta jovencita

que se atrevió a decir “sí” a Dios. Creemos firmemente que

es por ese “sí” que la palabra se volvió carne y Dios vino a

morar entre nosotros en la persona de Jesús, el Mesías de

Israel y de las naciones.

María, la virgen, ocupa un lugar predominante en la historia

de Adviento-Navidad. A través de los siglos, la Iglesia ha

reconocido y celebrado el papel de María en la historia de la

redención. El Evangelio de San Lucas hace un uso especial de

la figura de María y de otra mujer para contar la Historia de Jesús.

En la Letanía de Loreto (Santísima Virgen), impresas en los

vitrales que adornan las ventanas de nuestra Iglesia Santa

María, las cuales se refieren a la Virgen María como el “Arca

de la Alianza”, recordamos el saludo de Elizabeth a María

“bendito es el fruto de tu vientre”. El Arca guardaba al Santo

de los Santos, al Torah, la Palabra del Señor.

En el Evangelio de San Lucas , en la escena de la visitación

(Cap. 1:39-56) existe un doble encuentro y una doble

epifanía. No solamente existe un encuentro entre María y su

prima, Isabel, también hay un importantísimo encuentro

entre el “fruto del vientre de María” y el fruto del vientre de

Elizabeth (Jesús y Juan). Lucas, el historiador, declara que en

el momento en que Isabel escuchó el saludo de María “el bebé

saltó en su vientre, e Isabel, llena del Espíritu Santo, dijo

“bendita tu entre las mujeres y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre”.

El jueves, 12 de Diciembre, la Iglesia Universal celebró la

Fiesta de la Virgen del Tepeyac, nuestra Señora de

Guadalupe. Existen dos puntos muy significativos en la

imagen de la Virgen plasmada en la Tilma de Juan Diego, que

mucho se refiere a la teología de San Lucas:

1) María con niño: Mujeres aztecas durante su embarazo

que visten un listón negro en la cintura, amarrada al frente.

Este listón lo encontramos en la imagen, “Bendito es el fruto

de tu vientre.”

2) Mestizaje: La cara de la Virgen revela el nacimiento de

una nueva raza –la “mezcla de razas” (raza mestiza). San

Lucas toma prestada la festividad Judía de Pentecostés que

celebra el mosaico de la alianza para explicar a los primeros

Cristianos que la Iglesia es la nueva Jerusalén, que reúne en

Cristo a la gente de todas las naciones y razas. La imagen

mestiza de la Virgen de Guadalupe simboliza la alianza por la

cuál Israel será un símbolo de la santidad de Dios para las naciones .

También es importante notar en el texto de San Lucas, las

palabras de la oración de María, la Magnifica. María alaba a

su Señor porque El ha puesto su mirada en su humildad y la

bendijo para hacer grandes cosas por El (Lucas 1:47 – 55).

María es joven y es mujer. En sus tiempos, quién valoraba el

ser joven o ser mujer? Juan Diego a quien la Virgen se

apareció! En su tiempo, tiempo de conquistadores….quién

valoraba a un indio? Incluso en el México actual, llamar a

alguien “indio” es como usar una “mala palabra” en los

Estados Unidos. Gran parte de la teología de San Lucas

respecto a la historia de la redención de Jesús, es el papel que

juegan el pobre y el marginado de la sociedad. Para San

Lucas, el marginado no es objeto de la misión de Cristo, sino

el instrumento del Señor para traerle la redención a la

humanidad. Es María, la desconocida y marginada, quien

sirve como arca de la alianza, quien comparte la sagrada

Palabra que se ha diseminado por todo el mundo.

“Santa María, llena eres de gracia, el Señor es contigo.

Bendita seas entre todas las mujeres

y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre, Jesús!”

We look forward to welcoming your child into the life of the

Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation

classes before having their child baptized. Please call the

Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of your

child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that

godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have

received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and

Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.

WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance

with one of the priests.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.

in the Church, or anytime by appointment.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately
