Hello RLC friends and family,
I hope you all are having a wonderful fall! I cannot believe how fast Thanksgiving
is coming, and there's a song in the air of Advent too. I would actually like to
share some of my personal feelings about music and worship this month. Music
can have such an impact on us and affects most, if not all, aspects of our lives. I
cannot even imagine life without music. Can you imagine watching a movie or a
television show without music? Can you remember a commercial without music?
Do you ever hear a song and immediately associate it with an event, a product, a
person, a memory, a change in your mood, or experience an uplift in spirit almost
feeling like a reminder of God's presence around you? It's quite amazing how mu-
sic can affect us and even help heal us. This is probably why we are seeing such
growth in the use of music therapy these days. Do you ever wonder what makes
music in a church so important? Have you wondered why so much time, effort,
and investment is made by churches for their worship services? I saw an interest-
ing article that stated, "Music is take-home theology. Music gives a voice to the
belief system of the body that is singing." Our Bible's scriptural lyrics in our
hymns and praise songs reflect the things that are true about God. Our songs
teach us about God and His son Jesus, and we lift our hearts in worship to him
when we sing. Even more profound is the fact that people are more likely to re-
member words which they have sung more than words only spoken or heard.
Some of us may find ourselves humming or singing lyrics that we've brought
home from church. What a blessing it is to be able to sing praise to our Lord in
worship and to sing about our Lord, allowing us to spread His word, create a true
picture of God, and to be able to share His amazing love through song. Let our
music be pleasing to him! As the choirs prepare music for Advent and Christmas,
I am excited to share the story of Jesus coming into the world as a baby with our
members and our community. You probably have already heard about our up-
coming Christmas cantata The Winter Rose, which is scheduled for December
13th at 11 o'clock. Please bring friends and family to experience this beautiful mu-
sical. I look forward to sharing music with all of you this season as always!

RLC Shepherd Ministry By Judy Troast
The 23rd Psalm, “The Lord is My Shepherd,” has always been my favorite Psalm. Since I was a child, I loved hearing it spoken and reading it myself. The language in it is so beautiful and evokes a wonderful feeling of serenity and calmness. I like the image of the Lord always being there to guide and watch over me even during the most difficult circumstances. I’ve often recited it to myself when I needed some outside support. Perhaps this is what drew me to the Shepherd Ministry at RLC. The Shepherd Ministry was created by our former pastor, Carol Kniseley, as an extension of the pastoral office and a means to enhance communication between the pastors and members of the Congregation. Through the years, however, it has become much more. Our congregation is divided into 12 flocks which come under the watchful and loving care of one or two Shepherds. All the Shepherds come under the care of the Pastor. The Shepherd’s role is to keep in touch with members of their flock, get to know them and be aware of any need that arises which should be communicated to the Pastor. How the Shepherds do this is up to each of them. Besides communication, however, the Shepherds are there to provide assis-tance and support to members of their flock, such as organizing meals and visits for members who are sick. If a need occurs with a church member, we would hope that one of the first people contacted would be a Shepherd. Do you know who your Shepherd is? Come visit the Shepherd Ministry dis-play in the Narthex during November. There will be a picture of each Shep-herd and a listing of Congregation members under each flock. Currently we have a vacancy for a Shepherd in Flock # 5. If you are interested in becoming a Shepherd, or your name is not listed under a flock, please contact me. Peace be with you.

Faith In Action
The Faith In Action Team has been most busy since the tremendously fine
school supply and healthy snack collection with making revisions to the web site infor-
mation (check it out), plans for a Narthex display board and for future projects. Hope-
fully you were able to participate in the Hope House collection of supplies during Octo-
ber.
During November, we are asking you to add some nonperishable food items to
your shopping carts for the food boxes to be given with the gifts from the Angel Tree to
the Chancellor Elementary School families. These bags of food can be placed at the Nar-
thex Giving Tree spot beginning November 1 through Sunday December 13. Holiday
food items are great with vegetables, soups and so forth for this collection.
The Angel Tree will contain the tags for the children at Chancellor School as usu-
al, but in addition, there will be tags for kitchen supplies for the Lutheran Family Ser-
vices Minnick Schools. The kitchen tools are used in the instruction of food service skills
which the Minnick students might use in future careers to make for their success in life.
We applied to Thrivent Financial for matching funds and were granted $300
with the kitchen tool project. This being the case we will be asking the Resurrection fam-
ily to save the receipts for any kitchen utensils purchased with the item circled or high-
lighted on the receipt. We will need a total of #300 plus in receipts to match the
Thrivent Financial Grant. (Kitchen supplies for the Minnick schools will not need to be
wrapped. Just please return the tag from the Angel Tree with the receipt stapled to it.)
All of this information will be reviewed in the December newsletter.
The revised Faith In Action purpose statement is: As stewards of Faith In Action,
we strive to spread the Good News Gospel that God has raised Jesus from the dead. We
do this through our deeds that ease privation and provide assistance to our church fami-
ly, our community and the word around us.
My hope and prayer are that each member of the Resurrection family will sup-
port and pray for this major upcoming Christmas project.

Worship & Music Thank you to everyone who bought a new ELW hymnal during the past month! We have reached our goal of 200 and will begin using the new hymnals on Sunday November 29. On November 22 we are requesting your help to take the green hymnal and blue hymnals from the pews and stack them on tables as directed. You will then pick up a new ELW hymnal and place it in the pew. There will be further announcements on Sunday, November 22 with further directions on the change out. Also on Novem-ber 22 we will gather together for our Thanksgiving feast after the 10:00 service. After the dinner and fellowship we will then join in decorating the church for the Advent/Christmas season. Thank you !

“It takes a village to raise a
child” has always been one of my favorite sayings. Until recently. Walking through the experiences of life with the young peo-ple of Resurrection, God shows me daily that, “It takes a village to LOVE a child.” We are all part of their village and the warmth, safety, and ac-ceptance that our congre-gation pours out on all the youth is so very important to each one. There is a lot of hard stuff in their world…and it came to our doorstep recently through the incident at Riverbend
High School. Through the anxiety, through the an-ger, through the fear, our youth (some at River-bend, some not) reached out to each other in pray-er and support. Amazing to witness them loving each other in good times and hard times, and help-ing them rest in God’s word, “I will fear no evil for thou art with me.” Thank you to our youth and to our congregation for being part of each oth-er’s village.

During the Adult Forum Sunday 10/15, we had another “state of our church” dis-
cussion. We talked about what is going on around the church and provided an
opportunity to answer any questions that are floating around. Discussions were
about the status of the Call process, and how it would be good to share that con-
versation with a wider audience.
As Lutherans, we do things a little bit odd… and I’m not just talking about “Sin
Boldly”! My lovely “recovering-Catholic” wife is amazed that we have a call pro-
cess and that we, as a Congregation, participate in the identification of our next
faith leader. The Catholic Bishop decides when to rotate Priests, and it just hap-
pens. I’m sure many of us have experiences that are equally different from the
Lutheran call.
As a Lutheran congregation, we go through a process of discernment to try and
understand God’s will for us in calling our next permanent pastor. One of our
first steps in this process is to fill out the Ministry Site Profile (MSP). This is
about 11 pages of information about the Congregation that assist the Bishop and
potential clergy in discerning who would be the best fit for our future pastor.
(There will be a blank copy in the Narthex, if you want to see what all goes into
it.)
In order for this to be an effect tool, it has to be accurate. Our council has already
assembled a Transition Team to put together this MSP. Some of the MSP ques-
tions will be easy: What was the total budget for the last fiscal year? Other ques-
tions will require group participation: What is it your congregation is really excit-
ed about right now? Do we tend to be more formal and programmatic, or more
informal and spontaneous? To address these questions (and many others), the
Transition Team will be sending out surveys and holding meetings to start devel-
oping these answers.
Once the MSP is reasonably complete, we’ll move on to creating the Call Commit-
tee. The purpose of the Call Committee is to take the Congregation’s guidance
from the Transition Team/MSP and discern which of the potential candidates is
the best fit for our needs.
Today, we are in the Transition Team phase. Expect to see a few surveys as the
Team works to fill in the MSP and discern the mood and character of our Congre-
gation. This is your opportunity to prayerfully consider what is important and
where you think we need to be as a Congregation. The more participation we have
in these discussion/surveys, the more opportunity the Holy Spirit will have to
move through each of us and guide us down God’s path. (And yes, we’ll all get a
chance to see the MSP before it’s done!)
The next of our “state of our church” discussions will be on Nov 15, again during
the Adult Forum. (I’ll wait for a moment while you put that into your calendar!) I
look forward to seeing you all there and enjoying some more coffee with you!

NOVEMBER IS STEWARDSHIP MONTH
You may recall that the ELCA stewardship theme this year is “Stewards of
God’s Love.” Our calling is to love God and to love our neighbor. Beginning
in September, and in October each of the Ministry Teams had an opportuni-
ty to showcase their particular mission and ministry. Now coming up in No-
vember is Stewardship Month.
Next Sunday November 1 and the following Sunday November 8 the Stew-
ardship Team will have Stewardship Commitment packages available for all
members to pick up in the Narthex. The Stewardship Commitment package
will contain three (3) forms: one for commitment of time, one for commit-
ment of talent, and a form for commitment of your annual financial re-
sponse to God’s blessings.
The completed forms should be put back in the envelope and sealed. The an-
nual financial response commitment form will be kept confidential and will
only be kept by the Financial Secretary in order to post the individual giving
records. The forms for time and talent will be given to the appropriate Min-
istry Teams as indicated on the forms.
There will be a basket at the Stewardship table in the Narthex to turn in your
completed commitment forms on November 15 and the 22nd. The basket
with the completed commitment forms will be consecrated on Sunday No-
vember 22.
Please stop at the Stewardship Table and pick up your Stewardship Commit-
ment Package. Take the forms home and prayerfully consider your commit-
ment to God and to one another here at Resurrection.

Women’s Bible Study m eets every W ednesday at 9:30 AM in the Conference Room . Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study meets the first Saturday of the m onth at 8:00 AM in the Conference
Room. Women of the ELCA (WELCA) m eets the second Thursday of each m onth at 9:30AM in the Conference
Room for a Bible lesson from Gather Magazine, discussion and refreshments. Nifty After Fifty (NAF) m eets the third Tuesday of the m onth at noon for lunch at selected restaurants in
the area. Theology Pub m eets the third Sunday of the m onth from 6:00 -8:00 PM at different pubs in the Fredericksburg
area. Participants are divided into small groups to discuss topics of interest over food and drink. Prayer Group m eets each W ednesday 11:15 AM for m editation and prayer in the Church Sanctuary. Brisben Homeless Shelter Team from Resurrection prepares a m eal at the shelter on a specified Sunday
in the afternoon. Members of the church are invited to donate food items for the meal. A sign-up sheet is located on the Bulletin Board in the Narthex.
Tables of Eight. Tables of eight people get together w ith a host couple at their hom e to enjoy dinner and fellowship together. A sign-up sheet is on the Bulletin Board.
Piecemakers (quilting group) m akes quilts, prayer blankets, pillow s to distr ibute to hom eless shelters and others. Meets second and fourth Tuesdays from 10-2PM in Conference Room.
Below is a list of Resurrection Ministry Teams. We encourage members of the Congregation to
participate in one or more teams where they have particular interests and God-given talents.

__ Christian Education
This team focuses on our Christian Education for children, youth, and adults. This ministry includes Sunday
School, Adult Forum, Confirmation, Young Adult and High School Youth Bible Study and Vacation Bible

__ Faith in Action (Will meet on a selected day)
This team plans and coordinates our ministry to folks in the community that are in need of assistance. Cur-
rently this team is helping folks through feeding the homeless at the Thurman-Brisben Homeless Shelter and
the Fifth Saturday Meal at the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, the Angel Tree, Hope House, Micah Min-

This team plans, directs and coordinates our financial activities of RLC. They work closely with the

__ Health Ministry (Meets on the fourth Tuesday night of the month at 6:30PM)
This team is committed to our healing mission that integrates faith and health by promoting
wholeness of body, mind and spirit. This ministry includes our annual Health Fair, healing services, monthly
lunch and bingo provided to residents of Germanna Heights Community, and monthly health screenings.

This team plans and coordinates our various receptions and food opportunities that take place at
Resurrection. These opportunities include: coffee hour after worship, Lenten soup suppers, the

__ Grief Ministry
This team has conducted seminars on various aspects of grief and has resources available to assist those who

__ Mission Endowment (Members are elected at the Annual Meeting and this team meets other
than all teams night)
This team is entrusted with education and promotion about the Mission Endowment Fund of Resurrection.
When the Mission Endowment Fund has reached a $50K threshold, the Mission Endowment Board decides

Resurrection Ministry Teams
__ Mutual Ministry (Meets other than Tuesday Teams night and members are appointed by Council
and Pastors.)
This team meets with the pastors quarterly and acts as a sounding board for various needs and concerns that arise.
The purpose of this team is to help maintain harmony within our congregation. Contact: Dan Rieken,

__ Evangelism/Outreach (Will meet on a selected day)
This team creates ways to inform people outside of Resurrection about the church. It plans and coordinates our con-
gregation’s welcome to new and returning visitors; invitation to education and membership into the church; and

__ Personnel (Will meet other than Tuesday Team night)
This team is responsible for development and oversight of our RLC personnel processes and operation. Contact:

__ Property
This team plans, directs and coordinates the operations, maintenance and improvements to our RLC campus
(building and grounds) within the means set by the Council and the Annual Ministry Plan. Contact: Fred Riedl, 540-

Our School Board oversees the operation of our Resurrection Lutheran School. Our daily

__ Mission Resources/Stewardship
This team provides our ongoing, year-round program of stewardship education and invites all
members to participate according to their means in the financial support of Resurrection and the Evangelical Lu-

This team plans, recommends and implements technology for the congregation, addressing needs that might arise
with office printers, audio amplifiers, antivirus software, Polycom teleconferencing, livestreaming of worship, and

This team works with our Youth Ministries Leader, in planning and coordinating our Youth Ministry at Resurrection

Congregation members are divided into 12 flocks coming under the care of a Shepherd. The Shepherds keep the lines
