Superintendent Message High School Principal DECEMBER 2015 NEWSLETTER ADRIANSD.COM CALENDAR ASVAB Test for Junior & Seniors, Dec 1 RSD Friday, Dec. 4 Christmas Concert, K-5 at 2:00pm; MS/HS at 7:00pm Dec. 7 RSD Friday, Dec. 11 Full Friday School, Dec. 18 End of Semester 1, Dec. 18 The facilities meeting, which had been set for November 23, has been postponed. Not enough information and/or planning are available at this time. We most likely will meet in January, 2016. I’ll keep you, our community, posted on this important item. Congratulations to our fall teams and coaches. You have done a very nice job. The Antelopes represented themselves and our school very well at the State Play-offs. A strong turnout of Antelope supporters turned out for games against Powers and Crane. These young men, and their coaches, deserve our encouragement and thankfulness. They spend long hours and have been totally dedicated to being ‘the best’. At the Adrian School, we have administrators, teachers, and support staff who ‘love kids’ and ‘love’ their jobs. This leads to a school climate that is inclusive and pro- ductive. ‘Thank You’, Adrian staff, for all that you do. Your hard work is appreciated. Antelopes forever, Gene Mills The first half of the year is winding down and the semester will come to a close in only three and a half weeks. It has been a very good first half of the year and we’re hoping that we can all finish the semester in strong fashion. A few highlights worth mentioning include the fact that once again this year we had student representation at the Honor Band and Honor Choir festival held at Northwest Nazarene University. Haylee Richardson, Mariah Richardson and Qim Tolman were selected to participate along with other students from Eastern Oregon and Western Idaho. The girl’s volleyball team finished second in league, as well as, a second place finish at the district tournament in John Day. After a hard fought victory over Butte Falls, the girls fell to the eventual number two at the state tourney, Hosanna Christian. Our football team won their fourth consecutive High Desert League Championship and advanced to the semi-finals before falling to a very good Crane Mustang team. The boys had won 21 consecutive games, and 28 of their last 30 games. Congratulations to the players and coaches on a great run! I hope that you are all able to enjoy the little break that we will have and that you can find some things to be thankful for. I know that I have been truly blessed and I am thankful that I live in such a wonderful community and work with the out- standing students, teachers and families of Adrian! Have a great Thanksgiving! Math 30 Seconds

“Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.” (Henry J. Keiser) We will repeat some of the problem-solving strategies suggested earlier with the added emphasis on the fact that all successful strategies de-mand active and concentrated thinking on the part of the problem solver. Guess and check. Look for a pattern. Make a diagram or model. Act it out. Work back-wards. Simplify the problem. Eliminate possi-bilities. Make a systematic list. Get advice or do research. Sleep on it. (Paul Giganti “Making Math Part of Your Family’s Life” The Oregon Mathematics Teacher, December 2003) If parents remind students of these strategies and use timely questions, they may be able to assist their student in mathematics without knowing the math content. In fact par-ents may be able to learn some math. T.S.

The month of November is a special one! The feast of Thanksgiving and gathering of love ones; State High School Football Playoffs—Go ‘Lopes; and honoring those who serve and/or have served our country as a member of the armed forces. With a focus on Veterans Day, the student body enlisted the help of the first, third and fourth grade clas-ses to write letters to our community veterans. With help from high school leadership students, we created posters and hung them around town expressing our appreciation for the brave men and women choosing to help protect our lives and freedoms. ASB and Leadership supported the Green Light a Vet program by sending home letters and a green lightbulb with students in an effort to show support and appreciation to our veterans. Leadership also went out to the community and passed out green lightbulbs and cookies and thank you notes to vets. We noticed a lot of green lights shining throughout the community. We wish to thank all veterans, your service is commendable and we graciously thank each and every one of you! Adrian ASB members have been busy with various school projects and assemblies. Michael Griffin hosted a town hall meeting for the Owyhee Canyonlands. ASB members assisted him in hosting the all the digni-taries from around the county and state at the event. Approximately 600 people were in attendance at the meeting. ASB also assisted with the PTO Halloween Carnival, which was enjoyed by all who attended. Adrian Football and Volleyball teams completed their seasons. Both teams competed at the State Play-offs. Congratulations are in order for both squads. -Erin Nielson, ASB reporter

Seniors and Parents of Seniors Christmas break is a great time to begin work-ing on the FAFSA(Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Go to www.fafsa.gov to begin the process, you can use estimates of your resources and income until your tax infor-mation is available in January. The sooner this process is begun the better chance you have to get federal student aid. There will also be a free FAFSA workshop in January at TVCC. I will get word to the seniors when I have a firm date. This is a free workshop where you can get help with financial aid and filling out the FAFSA.

During the month of October, Adrian FFA members were actively engaged in a state wide Food Drive effort. The Oregon FFA recently partnered with Les Schwab to host a food drive. Each FFA chapter throughout the state was partnered with a Les Schwab tire store, for Adrian they were partnered with the Coos Bay store. The Adrian FFA chapter took on the Food Drive challenge and devised a two-part plan which they were able to successfully implement. The first portion involved gleaning local potato and onion fields. The Glean Team was overseen and ran by chapter member, Hunter Phelps as his Physical Project for Senior Project. As the final bags were tallied, the Chapter and school members had collected more than 77,647 pounds of produce which was given away at various school and community functions even a semi-load of potatoes were delivered to the Oregon Food Bank in Portland. Phase two involved the “Changing Hunger” loose change and non-perishable food collection drive. The Kindergarten through eighth grades were challenged to donate with the top class receiving an ice cream Sundae party provid-ed by the FFA Officers!! It was a close event that came down to the final minutes of donations, but in the end Ms. Zimmerman’s 3

rd grade class were the victors and had collected the equivalent of 940

pounds!! Second place went the 8th grade with 894 pounds and third place was the 4

th grade class with

386 pounds. In addition, the FFA chapter awarded the top student in each class with an FFA prize. The winners are listed below: Kindergarten-Lilly Anderson (11.8 pounds) 5

th grade- Jace Martin (78.5 pounds)

1st grade-Joshua Cardenas (77.7 pounds) 6

th grade-Conley Martin (78.6 pounds)

2nd

grade-Maxton Hansen (32 pounds) 7th grade-Hugo Delgado (56 pounds)

3rd grade- Colten Bayes (368.7 pounds) 8th grade-Riley Bradford (676 pounds)

4th grade- Breanna Morford (53.4 pounds)

High school students were also challenged to participate and donate loose change and food items. Winning a month’s supply of chocolate milk was Marcus Furtado (Junior). Second place went to Lauren Barraza (Junior) who received a gallon of milk and Wes White (Junior) was third and received half a gallon of chocolate milk. In total the “Changing Hunger” drive brought in 3,478.32 pounds!! Added to the gleaning total, Adrian FFA submitted a total of 81,125.32 pounds of food!! The Adrian FFA would like to thank the students and community members of Adrian for their support

and efforts with the food drive! They especially want to recognize Mr. Geary Johnson and the Riley

Bradford family for their contributions! The Food Drive was a huge success and in time they will learn

how they did compared to the other

FFA chapters in the state!!

It may be difficult for some students to get accustomed to our cold weather in Adrian. It has been challenging for 15 year old Thai exchange student Nath (Oscar) Podswan who is comfortable with the warm climate of Thailand. And even though Adrian doesn’t have much scenery or is not surrounded by water, Oscar is adjusting and does like Adrian. Oscar is used to the big city, Bangkok which has

about 6.4 million people. Oscar’s family comes from Chinese

descent but speak Thai. They work as civil engineers,. Oscar

speaks Thai and English.

Oscar has a love for American hamburgers and

cheeseburgers. He lives in the dorms with the other six

exchange students and with the VanCorBach’s, the dorm

parents. Oscar’s weekend getaway family is the Mills family

and he said they are a very nice couple.

Oscar plays basketball. He played it back in Thailand

and is planning to play basketball for the ‘Lopes’ this year,

“just for fun,” he said. He also tried football this year, but decided basketball is the sport he enjoys.

Oscar is just like any other students in Adrian High School. He as a lot of homework and likes to hang

out with his new friends at Adrian and his “exchange brothers.” Oscar also enjoys attending the football games to

support the Antelopes while chatting to his friends.

By: Cecilia Martin del Campo The anticipation was dwindling to an end as, Jan Kietzmann’s flight from Essen, Germany to Boise, Idaho was coming to an end. He met with Mrs. Vancorbach and started a whole new journey to Adrian, Oregon. Pulling into Adrian, Jan wasn’t sure what to expect at all because it was much smaller than his home town. Adrian has a population of 170 people while the city of Essen has a population of 566,862. Our school has a population of 70 students and Jan comes from a school of 1,100.

Jan comes from a family of five. His stated his mother sells furniture while his dad is a project manager. Jan has two younger sisters ages 12 and 5. His 12 year old sister enjoys hanging out on her phone while his 5 year old sister enjoys playing with Barbie dolls. In his free time, Jan enjoys playing computer games, playing sports, reading or hanging out with his friends. His favorite American food is cheese burgers. His first American sport he’s played, is football. So far he said he’s really enjoyed it. Back home his favorite sport is athletics, also known as track. After he’s finished his semester at Adrian he plans to return to Germany and continue school to become an Architect. Unlike all the other Foreign exchange students Jan will be cutting his visit short and return to Germany after Christmas break, because he doesn’t want to repeat his sophomore year back home. Jan has been a pleasant addition to our school and we have enjoyed his humor, soft spoken demeanor, and warm smile.

If you received extra benefits on a new or preexisting Oregon Trail SNAP card this past summer, and would be willing to answer a few questions about your experience with the pilot, please contact Partners For a Hunger-Free Oregon researcher Amy Woehling via phone: (224) 627-5693 or email: [email protected] Eligible families who assist in our research efforts by completing an in-depth interview will receive a monetary incentive as a small thank you for sharing your experiences and story. Based on interview responses, select families may be invited to share their story further with policymakers and advocacy groups in the state. Thank you!
