In September 1944, after the victorious end of the Normandy campaign, Field Marshal Montgomery devised a daring operation to open the way to the Ruhr by seizing a bridgehead north of the Rhine, at Arnhem. Operation Market, the largest airborne operation in history, was carried out by three Allied airborne divisions. Operation Garden was the ground side in which the 30th British Corps was to link up with the British 1st Airborne at Arnhem by thrusting north along a narrow corridor opened by the U.S 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Then, the remainder of British Second Army would rapidly assault the Ruhr, thus hastening the collapse of the Third Reich and likely ending the war in 1944. Day 8: Friday, November 1 - Disembarkation and In Pursuit of Bach After breakfast we disembark the ship and head north. In pursuit of Bach we visit Arnstadt. The town is not only a Bach center because Johann Sebastian Bach worked here from 1703 until 1707, but more so because it was the home and workplace of his ancestors. The Bach’s established themselves from the end of the 16th century throughout Thuringia and beyond and decisively influenced the musical life of that time. We’ll tour the Palace Museum which has a permanent exhibit dedicated to the life and times of the Bach family. Enjoy a bit of free time before our adventure continues. We will pass the town of Weimar as we make our way to Leipzig - the city of Bach, Wagner, Schumann and Mendelsohn.

After arriving in Leipzig meet your local guide for glimpse into the world of Bach. Leipzig is where Johann Sebastian Bach spent 27 of his most productive years. Enjoy an organ recital this afternoon at the Saint Thomas Church in Leipzig. Bach worked here as a cantor for 27 years and his remains are buried below the altar. Dinner this evening is in Germany’s second oldest restaurant! Established in 1438, the Auerbachs Keller is where the young Goethe often visited while studying at Leipzig University from 1765 to 1768 and called it his favorite wine bar. The Leipzig Organ Festival will be occurring these days and we have reserved tickets for you. Sleep in Leipzig (B, D)

Day 9: Saturday, November 2 - A Day with Schumann and Mendelssohn Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a major influence on European musical history – and he in turn was influenced by his experience of Leipzig. Under his musical direction, the Gewandhaus Orchestra became a first-class orchestra. Moreover, Mendelssohn is renowned for his rediscovery of Bach. The performance of the St. Matthew Passion under his musical direction in 1829 initiated “the Bach Renaissance”. He is also credited for the foundation of the Conservatory of Music in 1843, Germany’s oldest music academy, which bears his name today.

Mendelssohn’s home became a meeting place for famous contemporaries such as Robert and Clara Schumann and Richard Wagner. It is the composer’s last remaining private residence and today accommodates the Mendelssohn Museum. Just a few blocks away you’ll find the charming home of Robert and Clara Schuman. Today you will visit the homes of both composers and enjoy a private piano recital in the charming home of Robert and Clara. Sleep in Leipzig (B)

Historical note: Clara Schumann was born in Leipzig on September 13, 1819. Richard Wagner was also born in Leipzig on May 22, 1813. George Frideric Handel, was born February 23, 1685, in the nearby village of Halle.
