Or, you can visit the renowned airborne museum in Arnhem. In September 1944, after the victorious end of the Normandy campaign, Field Marshal Montgomery devised a daring operation to open the way to the Ruhr by seizing a bridgehead north of the Rhine, at Arnhem. Operation Market, the largest airborne operation in history, was carried out by three Allied airborne divisions. Operation Garden was the ground side in which the 30th British Corps was to link up with the British 1st Airborne at Arnhem by thrusting north along a narrow corridor opened by the U.S 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. Then, the remainder of British Second Army would rapidly assault the Ruhr, thus hastening the collapse of the Third Reich and likely ending the war in 1944. guides and hosts for a tour to the small town of Miltenberg.

Emperors and kings have trod here on the winding, narrow cobblestoned alleys of Miltenberg. So have blacksmiths, tanners and witches. A world of fables and legends is conjured up right before one’s eyes when walking through the enchanted maze of centuries-old, traditional German timber-frame houses, past ornate Renaissance-style sandstone wells, along the pinnacles of the medieval castle and the overcasting shades of awry gables, cryptic statues and imposing watchtowers. Can there be many places in the world where lodgers have included a trio such as Frederic Barbarossa, Napoleon and Elvis Presley? Sleep on board (B, L*, D) Day 7: Thursday, October 31 – A Day in the City of Wurzburg

“Wurzburg is a magnificently beautiful city,” wrote Wolfgang Amadéus Mozart to his wife Constanze in 1790 while performing for the Prince Bishop.

Today, Wu ̈rzburg is the center of the Franconian wine country. The Prince Bishop’s palace was built between 1720 and 1744 and was completed in 1780. At the time, it was one of the most important palaces in Europe and has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site.

Today enjoy a tour of the Prince Bishop Palace before meeting your hosts for a farewell feast and concert on board the ship. Sleep on board (B, L*, D)

Day 8: Friday, November 1 - Disembarkation and In Pursuit of Wagner and Bach After breakfast we disembark the ship and drive north to the great city of Leipzig via Bayreuth. Richard Wagner reached the peak of his creative genius in this famous city with his first production of The Ring in the Theatre he miraculously managed to have built to his specifications. The Wagner Museum is in the composer's former home, Villa Wahnfried. Enjoy an independent lunch in one of the many downtown restaurants and beer houses and then drive further north to Leipzig, a city forever associated with Johann Sebastian Bach who spent 27 years there as Cantor.

The Saint Thomas Church is where Bach taught, composed, conducted and raised his big family. His remains are buried below the altar. This evening, experience Bach’s creation in its element with a concert featuring some if his Motets performed by the church choir, organist, and members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Dinner this evening is in Germany’s second oldest restaurant! Established in 1438, the Auerbachs Keller is where the young Goethe often visited while studying at Leipzig University from 1765 to 1768 and called it his favorite wine bar. Sleep in Leipzig (B, D) Day 9: Saturday, November 2 - A Day with Schumann and Mendelssohn Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a major influence on European musical history – and he in turn was influenced by his experience of Leipzig. Under his musical direction, the Gewandhaus Orchestra became a first-class orchestra. Moreover, Mendelssohn is renowned for his rediscovery of Bach. The performance of the St. Matthew Passion under his musical direction in 1829 initiated “the Bach Renaissance”. He is also credited for the foundation of the Conservatory of Music in 1843, Germany’s oldest music academy, which bears his name today.

Mendelssohn’s home became a meeting place for famous contemporaries such as Robert and Clara Schumann and Richard Wagner. It is the composer’s last remaining private residence and today accommodates the Mendelssohn Museum. Just a few blocks away you’ll find the charming home of Robert and Clara Schuman. Today you will enjoy a private piano recital in the charming home of Robert and Clara. Sleep in Leipzig (B) Historical note: Clara Schumann was born in Leipzig on September 13, 1819. Richard Wagner was also born in Leipzig on May 22, 1813. George Frideric Handel, was born February 23, 1685, in the nearby village of Halle.
