Reaching the Families of the Concho Valley with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ!

Brothers and sisters, Our Vision is to be “Here for all. One for Christ.” We wel-come men and women, boys and girls of all ages, single or married. Our Mission, is to enfold individuals and families with the Transforming Love of Jesus Christ! We say we want our church to grow, and we are grateful for weekly guests and the new members who find their place in the Fam-ily of God at Good Shepherd.

We welcome Sarah Arnold as our Nursery Attendant. Sarah is a junior at Central High School, and member of Sierra Vista Methodist Church and Youth Group. She is an exemplary student and a runner on the Track Team at Central. She comes highly recommended. She will staff the nursery from 9:00-Noon each Sunday. We are training church members who volunteer to serve with Sarah in the Nursery and Roselee Wilson and Jo Lieber in Children’s Sunday School Class. Thank you to those who are committed to helping in this vital ministry. Each room in which children are gathered for care or class must have two adults present at all times. For their safety, children are not to be left unattended in the building at any time.

Frankly, not enough of us have volunteered to serve as ‘helpers’ in either area. We need you to step up. Each volunteer working with chil-dren in the church must take the Ministry Safe training and pass the Quiz at the end of the course. The training is about an hour in duration. Our commitment with Ministry Safe is to have two persons present in all set-tings where children are involved. Will you consider stepping forward to serve with us? THE SHAPE OF OUR WORSHIP SERVICE

The Offertory

We now consider The Offertory. Following our confession of faith in the Holy Trinity in the Creed,

and the confession of our sinfulness and rebellion against our loving Creator, and extending the peace of rec-

onciliation to whoever has offended us, we are now prepared to unite our self-offering to the “once and for all

offering” of Jesus on the Cross in the Holy Eucharist. Let’s consider three aspects of this self-offering.

First: Returning the gifts. One of the great truths celebrated in God’s Word is that He has created us

and commissioned us to be stewards of this world. Genesis , I and 2 reveals this truth. Man is placed in the gar-

den to “till it and keep it.” Created in the image of God, we are charged to care for the environment in which

we have been placed. Water, plants, rocks, minerals, swimming, creeping, flying and walking things are put

under our charge and care. Even the breath that fills our lungs, the hydrogen and oxygen, is a gift from God

who breathes into our “nostrils the breath of life.” Nothing of this world is ours, and when we die, we take

nothing of this world’s treasures with us. With the prophet we say:“Everything comes from You, and we have

given You only what comes from Your hand.” - 1 Chr. 29:14. Our tithe, 10% of our income and sacrificial gifts

(that offered over and above our tithe) are in recognition that God provides it all. We return to Him that portion

that we He has entrusted to our stewardship. In giving our tithe and offerings, we express our dependence on

the Lord for our daily life, and the confidence we have that He will meet our daily needs. (Mt. 6:33)

Second: Saying thank You. Our tithes and offerings are tokens of our self-giving. What the Lord de-

sires is a life-giving relationship with you and me. He loves us and seeks to fill us with the awareness of His

presence, provision and purpose for each of us. As awareness grows of the Lord’s overwhelming care for us,

gratitude wells up in our minds, and we find that words are inadequate to express our thanks. We come to real-

ize that the only response possible and acceptable is to surrender ourselves to the Lord. “I urge you brothers,

in view of God’s mercy, to offer yourselves as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God - which is your spiri-

tual worship.” - Romans 12:1 We offer to the Lord the internal treasure of our lives, our minds, imaginations,

emotions, talents, abilities, as well as the gifts of the Holy Spirit entrusted to us to serve others. We say thank

You by the way we live, to love and honor Jesus.

Third: One with Christ. We only come to know God as our Father through Jesus the Son. Jesus died

in our place to free us from the penalty of sin. The Scripture says He died “once and for all.” (Rom. 6:10) Dur-

ing the Holy Eucharist, we unite our moment by moment self-offering to His eternal “once and for all” offer-

ing. (Hebrews 10:19-23) We acknowledge that “the death He died, He died to sin once for all; but now the life

He lives, He lives to God.” We count ourselves “dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 6:11)

The offering of ourselves is united to all those in all times and places who have been united to Christ Jesus in

His death and now reign with Him in heaven. (Hebrews 12:1; Revelation 7:9-17) The saints on earth partici-

pate in the Wedding Banquet of the Lamb of God who has taken away the sins of the world. (Revelation 19:9)

The “people of God” are given “the gifts of God” - the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ assuring us of

His unconditional love and acceptance through Christ’s death. Here we partake of the true Bread which has

come down from heaven to give life to the world.

Summary: We give what we have been given. Jesus said: “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is

the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 5:3) Life in the Kingdom of God begins with the awareness that we have

nothing to give to God. In fact, all that we ‘have’ is really His. We approach the Holy Table as the widow in

the Temple courts who “… out of her poverty put in all she had.” (Luke 21:4)

The Anglican Way: “Stand to praise. Sit to hear. Kneel to pray.”

Thursday's Intercessors Each Thursday morning those committed to prayer for the needs of church members and non-members alike, gather in the chapel from 9:30-11:00 AM. Those wishing to participate as an intercessor, or

who would like to be prayed for, come by the chapel.

All are welcome.

Men’s Retreat November 16-18, 2012

Put these dates in your calendar today! We will gather at the Stasney-Cook Ranch in Albany, Texas

for dinner on Friday through lunch on Sunday. Fr. Jon Stasney will lead the retreat on men’s respon-

sibility to the Lord, to their families, to their community. Pack up you weapons, fishing gear, binocu-

lars and join us for a time or spiritual and physical refreshment in the rolling prairie of north Texas.

The cost is $140/person. Scholarships are available. Men of the church and their buddies are en-

couraged to join us.

Deacon June’s Letter September marks readings from the Gospel of Mark, chapters 7-9. We’ll watch Jesus mirror some of

what we saw in August. The readings this month show Jesus:

disputing the traditions of the Pharisees which contradict God’s law,

including Gentiles by healing the Syrophoenician Woman’s daughter,

heals a deaf man and a blind man,

feeding 4,000 families,

fulfilling Old Testament prophecies,

and, teaching us clearly that God has come to us.

September also marks for us the beginning of the school year. In many ways, it feels like a new year

more than January 1st does. Is this a good time for us to consider

breaking our traditions which hinder us from God’s love and grace,

knowing that God calls out to all humanity, not just the folks we like or folks who are like us,

praying that our deaf ears will hear and our blind eyes will see,

doing what we can to feed others,

taking the Old Testament seriously as it points us to Jesus,

and, knowing that God has come to us, changing our ways to fit into His plan?

Have a blessed September. Let us all in this “new year” resolve to attend Bible study and Sunday

school, resolve to teach everyone God has placed around us what new things we learn about God,

and that every day, we remember and resolve to respond to the words of our liturgy: “Almighty God,

to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts

of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily mag-

nify your holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

Blessings,

Deacon June

The vestry met at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20th. Vestry members present

were: Paul Millican, David Harrison, Rodney Brown, Teddye Read, Nan Barber, Billie Hodges, Jean Yarbrough and Fr. Stan Burdock. The meeting opened with evening

prayer. Fr. Stan served as clerk of the meeting in Martha Sue Oliver's absence. The min-utes were read and approved. The financial secretary's report was reviewed, discussed and approved. It was noted that copier costs have increased. Rodney reported that the

bathrooms have been repaired and reopened, that he is still working on bids for the garth beautification, and he submitted bids for recarpeting the nursery. The vestry voted

to accept a bid and proceed with replacing the carpet. Teddye reported that business cards are being prepared for members of the church to use and that she is also working on a church brochure, and training greeting teams for Sunday mornings. Nan reported

that the nursery worker is in place and things are going well and that the Sunday School sign-up breakfast is in progress. Billie Ruth report that there is much outreach going on

currently with preparations for the Gospel concert, the Beth Moore Women's Bible Study, the Men's upcoming "33" Bible study, a men's retreat to be held at Fr. Stasney's ranch during November, a new class for Daughters of the Holy Cross. Installation of Officers

for the Daughters will be held on September 9th during the 10:30 service. Jean said plans are in the works for some fellowship event each month. Fr. Stan reported that

Sherri Brown will sponsor classes in "Classical Conversations" for homeschoolers begin-ning September 4 and will be using 3 or 4 classrooms on Tuesdays. The vestry dis-

cussed the upcoming benefit concert for the Malawi Clinic which is progress-ing well. Mark Brown reported to the Vestry that there needs to be a new application for exemption of Ad Valorem Tax which he will prepare and submit and that tax will be

charged for the property next door if we are not using it for church activities. Ideas for use of the lot were discussed. The meeting closed with prayer and adjourned at 7:25

p.m.. Respectfully submitted, Billie Hodges A full copy of the vestry minutes is on the bulletin board in the Narthex.
