WHAT IS THE UCC WORKS INTERNSHIP AWARD

The UCC Works Internship Award is a period of unpaid work experience in a UCC campus organisation or department. The purpose of the initiative is to give students valuable work experience and allow them to receive formal recognition for same. It is a UCC initiative to support students in their professional and personal development.

Students have to satisfy 3 main criteria to be conferred with a UCC Works Internship Award. They are:

On completion of the internship and the submission of supporting documentation that reflects the student’s learning from the internship, students will receive a UCC Works Internship Award which provides formal recognition for their involvement in and learning acquired from the UCC Works Internship experience.

APPLY FOR APPROVAL OF THE INTERNSHIP•Completethe EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM and return it to the Steering Committee (Appedix 1).

•TheEXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM contains a section for the job description/ job advertisment which can then be advertised to students.

RECRUITMENT OF INTERNS•ReviewCVsfrom students interested in the advertised internships.

•Interviewapplicants who satisfy the essential and desirable criteria for the position and appoint the candidate deemed most suitable for the role .

MENTOR INTERNS

•Wherepossible, provide an induction programme for intern(s) and mentor them during the duration of the internship.

CONFIRM COMPLETION OF INTERSHIP

•Checkandverify that students have completed the following document: UCC Works INTERNSHIP RECORD OF ATTENDANCE FORM (see Appendix 2).

Criteria for Acceptance as an Internship Provider in UCC Works Internship Award:

• InternshipProvidersshould:

Provide interns with an opportunity to gain an insight

into the world of work and should offer an intern not

less than 40 hours of relevant work experience

during an academic year.

Follow a recruitment process that gives students

exposure to the selection process used by graduate

recruiters; by asking them to apply for an internship

with a CV and attend for an interview.

Supervise and mentor students during the internship.

Be prepared to provide the intern with an exit

interview and sign the Record of Attendance Form

(Appendix 2).

• Dutiesshouldbeofagraduatelevelandprovide anopportunityforinternstodevelopsomeofthe followingkeytransferableskills:

Interpersonal Skills Teamwork

Problem Solving Skills Decision Making Skills

Customer/Client Focus Planning and

Organisational Skills

• Allacademicandadministrativedepartmentsand

research centres within UCC are eligible to apply to

be an Internship Provider.

• Theinternshippositionshouldnotdisplacepaid

student help positions.

For the Internship Provider to be considered

eligible to participate in the UCC Works

Internship Award, they must first complete the

Expression of Interest Form in Appendix 1. The

UCC Works Steering Committee will review

the application and determine if the proposed

internship meets the criteria outlined below. The

Steering Committee will revert back within 10

working days to confirm if your application was

suitable for the UCC Works Internship Award.

The Expression of Interest Form contains a

section for a job description/job advertisement.

The section for the job description is included to

simplify the process for Internship Providers.

Once the internship is approved, the position

can be advertised immediately without further

documentation being required.

How is the UCC Works Award Assessed?

StudentsparticipatingontheUCCWorksInternshipProgrammehavetocompleteand

(see Appendix 2)

2. UCCWorksEmployability/PersonalDevelopmentWorkshopsRecordofAttendanceForm

4. Updated Curriculum Vitae.

TheSteering Committee will:

• Verifythattherecordsofattendanceformshavebeenvalidated.

• ReviewtheReflective Report and award the student a pass/fail mark and recommend

that they be either:

• PresentedwiththeUCCWorksAward

• Askedtoresubmittheirapplicationfollowingfeedback.

A Careers Advisor will review the Curriculum Vitae and work with the student until both

documents are satisfactory.
