A GUIDE TO FOOD WASTE MANAGEMENT

How to recycle yourfood waste

2

We will collect your food wasteApproximately 47% of your garbage bag is food waste. When you sepa-rate food waste such as banana peelings, fish entrails, meat and other food waste it will be recycled into energy (biogas) and biosolids that are used as nutrients in agriculture. Recycling food waste completes the carbon cycle. Sorting out and collecting food waste is a way for us as municipality and you as a citizen to contribute to reach our national environmental objectives: to manage waste in an environmentally friendly way and recycle more.

What happens to the food waste? The food waste container (brown) will be emptied at the same time as your regular waste container (green). The sorted food waste is emptied in a separate compartment on the garbage truck (picture below).

The collected food waste is then transported to a pretreatment plant where food waste is grounded into a fluid form called slurry. The slurry is then transported to a biogas plant where anaerobic digestion breaks down food waste into biogas and biosolids. Biogas is then upgraded into fuel for vehicle and can be used in buses and cars. The leftovers from the anaerobic digestion process, biosolids, are used as fertilizer in agri-culture.

1. Put the paper bag for food waste in the bag holder that you received with the starter kit. Using the holder the bag is ventilated and kept dry so that it does not leak or break. Use only the paper bag for throwing the food waste. The bags material is made so that it will be di-gested along with food in the biogas plant.

2. Please use the slush scraper when you pick up food waste from the sink. This allows wa-ter to flow out from the food waste and the bag becomes less wet.

3. Fill approximately 2/3 of the bag with food waste (to the dashed marker). By not fil-ling the bag with too much food waste it can be folded and sealed properly.

4. Dispose only paper bags with food waste in the brown container. If you live in an apartment than your landlord will arrange a place where you can dispose your bags with food waste.

How to start sorting your food waste

Do you need more paper bags for food waste?Do you live in an apartment? Your landlord will arrange a place where you can get more bags.

Do you live in your own house? You can always collect more paper bags for food waste in the municipal building (Bålsta), Hemköp, Smult-ronstället, Håbo bibliotek (the library)and at the recycling center (Väster-ängen). If you live in Skokloster you can collect paper bags at the local store or gas station. The bags are for free.
