    A Letter from Father Humphrey

Dear People, Neighbors & Friends of St. John's,

I was very pleased with the response I received to my last Evangelistletter, which only goes to show how desperate you all are for readingmaterial during this lockdown. Among the biggest takeaways from what you reflected back to me was

  • that St. John's has a history of conflict between rectors and the Bishop, and we don't want to do anything that would take us back there. I heartilyagree, and as a former vice president to the Bishop on Diocesan Council,I'm committed to maintaining the positive relationship we've developed, both personally and between the parish and the diocese. The Bishop hasheard from me on plenty of things where we might differ, but there is abasic mutual respect and due deference to each other's sphere ofauthority on contested matters.

I just got off the phone with the Bishop, and what I proposed to him fitsin with what he personally would allow his vicars to do under similarcircumstances, so our minds were both put at ease that he is comfortablewith my intentions, which I'll get into in a little more detail below. Another takeaway was the sense that St. John's didn't need to be atrailblazer on anything. We don't need to be the first out the gate or at thevanguard of anything. As long as people's sacramental and pastoralneeds are being met within public health guidelines, that's good enoughfor now. That said, I also heard from a significant number of you who expresseda) a strong desire to see the public witness of this church embrace the

  • essential nature of corporate worship within the bounds of all reasonableprecautions and/or b) an urgent pastoral need for St. John's to beavailable to those who wish to avail themselves of in-person worship. Those who fell into the first category were widespread geographicallyand some wouldn't be able to be here physically even were we fully opento public worship. As you might imagine, those who fell into the secondcategory were a self-selecting group of local parishioners. I was left was with a sense that St. John's should be wary of taking anypath that sets us apart from the one our Bishop has set for the widerdiocese, while still being pastorally flexible enough to meet theexpressed needs of our parishioners. Likewise, it is important for us asAnglo-Catholics to present a public witness to the essential nature of thechurch as a gathered body of human beings in one physical space. While I believe it's certainly true that when two or three are gathered inJesus' name via Zoom or Facebook Live, he is truly in the midst of us,the Greek word for church, ekklesia, literally means "gathering orassembly." So it's clearly normative for Christians to heed the teachingof Hebrews 10:23-25b, "Let us hold fast the confession of our hopewithout wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us considerhow to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting tomeet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another ..."

  • Of course, it would be irresponsible to meet together if it is impossible tosafeguard our own and each other's health insofar as is within our power, which is why the Bishop has insisted that for more than simply liabilityreasons we comply with all the regulations of the Rhode IslandDepartment of Health (RIDOH), and I am in full accord with him onthis. Using RIDOH as our standard, then, one can confidently answer thequestion, "Is it possible at this time for two or three ... or more ...unrelated people to gather in person in Jesus' name?" with a resounding"Yes!" Thus, the Bishop and I agree that the middle way, or via media betweenresuming public in-person worship and continuing to keep the buildinglocked up tight is what I've come to think of as a small "live studioaudience" of self-selected parishioners who would be admitted to thenave of the church on Sunday at nine in the morning, provided that St.John's does indeed comply with all RIDOH regulations, and that theparishioners for their part covenanted to observe applicable CDCguidelines within reason. And how many parishioners want to do so? Well, I can tell you that overthe past week I've heard from precisely ten people -- four individuals andthree couples --who are eager to do so. The Bishop, for his part, advisesparishes not to admit more than ten people at this time, and while we willhave four to six people in the chancel actually carrying out the liturgy, heis satisfied that treating the chancel and nave as separate zones complieswith his wishes. To that end, I've devised a working document withinitial guidelines reviewed by the Bishop, which may be found here.Other requirements will be added (or subtracted, I hope, in the case ofmasks sooner rather than later) as circumstances merit. Now if you're reading this letter and wishing you had volunteered, I'msorry to tell you that for Pentecost Sunday, at least, you're out of luck. But don't despair. Take a look at those guidelines above and be in touchwith me about Trinity Sunday, May 7, when our friend, Fr. JohnAlexander, the former rector of our sister parish, Saint Stephen's inProvidence, will be with us to preach and celebrate the Mass. Last evening in the Bishop's weekly Clergy Town Hall meeting onZoom, a friend and colleague shared that her church is devising smallgroups who would covenant with each other to function as "cells," sothat if there had to be a rotation due to capacity issues, there would be an

  • equitable way of determining whose "turn" it was to come to church.

I'll need to think through this and other ideas with the Vestry, Staff, andother lay leadership. (And now that Deacon Close is back at St. John's, Imight humor him into thinking I value his opinion.) But I like the idea ofcells functioning not only as worshipers on Sunday, but during the week,as well. Members of a small group might gather virtually or at a safedistance for Bible Study. Hearty souls might go grocery shopping for themore at-risk members. I'd even be willing to provide small groupmembers with a pyx containing the Reserved Sacrament on the Sundaysthey are here, so that on those Sundays when they cannot be here inperson, they might watch our livestream and take communion at the sametime as those of us in the church.

Faithful to the tradition of which we are stewards, I'm sure we can comeup with creative and imaginative ways of doing not only liturgy, butChristian formation and mutual pastoral care, as well. In all this, you willbe supported and encouraged by your clergy, who can join you virtually,or outdoors, or in person when we get the green light from the civilauthorities, whom St. Paul teaches us to respect in Romans chapter 13,and the religious authorities, under whose Scriptural warrants I havetaken a vow of obedience.

I pray for the day when I can write an Evangelist letter and not mentionthis epidemic! But I am prepared for the long haul, and I am grateful toall of you for being companions even from afar.

Yours in Christ's service,N.J.A. Humphrey+XIV Rector P.S. I would love to hear from you. You can be in touch by emailat [email protected], or, to make an appointment, please visit rector.youcanbook.me.

  • This past week, the scaffolding over the church's narthex came down andthe newly repointed stone was power-washed. It now looks appropriatelyweathered after nearly 126 years of bay winds beating against its redstone, but is now finally watertight and shipshape again!

But that's not all. The small team of men went right to work erectingscaffolding along the south side of the church and putting protectivecoverings over our precious stained glass windows. Repointing on thatside and of the church's tower will proceed as expeditiously as possible.

  • You may wonder: How many stones are theworkers re-pointing? Twenty-five percent?Fifty percent? The answer is: all of them! The total project will cost just under half amillion dollars, but it's money well spent tosecure the envelope of the church fromfurther water intrusion. • While our new console is here, a final detail is still being finalized, therosette carving for the side of the console facing the nave. The projecthas been a long one, but Fr. Humphrey found one consolation in the

  • console design process: the rector had the privilege of choosing thedesign for the rosette! He chose the sunflower design, which is foundelsewhere in the chancel on the right side choir pew panel.

In addition to the rosette, Fr. Humphrey enjoyed suggesting that the backof the console (the panel facing the choir) should look just like the backsof the choir pews themselves, and was inspired by the misericords hesaw in the quire of Hereford Cathedral in England to suggest abench that could be attached to the back of the console such that when itfolded down could accommodate three choristers. For now, that bench isa simple one, but perhaps someone will be inspired to have it carved as amisericord or add other ornamentation to the organ! You'll have a chanceto see it all for yourself this Sunday at 4 p.m. via Facebook Live (seeHereford Variations announcement, below).

    St. John on Patmos

The Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist is named forthe Apostle John, frequently referred to as the "Beloved Disciple." Johnis mentioned a lot in the New Testament. Traditionally, he is creditedwith writing the Gospel of John, the three Epistles (letters) of John, andthe Revelation of John. Let's leave it to scholars and theologians todiscuss and debate the accuracy of this tradition, since they have done sofor centuries and there is no reason to believe a definitive decision of thebooks human authorship is imminent.

  • Instead, let's look at St. John's window. It is to the left of the high altarand not readily seen from much of the church. Entitled, "St. John theDivine on the island of Patmos," it shows an older man, cloaked in redwith a quill in his hand. He in in the process of writing on a scroll. Johntells us that he is on the island of Patmos and it is believed that he wasbanished there by the Roman authorities. John is looking up at an angel.

"The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him ... he made itknown by sending his angel to his servant John ..." (Revelation 1:1.)Looking up at the angel is a white eagle, which is the symbol of theGospel writer John. Each Gospel is associated with an image: Mark, alion; Matthew, a man; Luke, an ox; and John an eagle. (Ezekiel 1:10,Rev. 4:7)

Flying above is a dove, the symbol of the Holy Spirit, with his beakpointing at John. This beautiful window tells of the writing ofRevelation, but it also points to the role of the Bible/Scriptures in theEpiscopal Church. "Why do we call the Holy Scriptures the word ofGod? - We call them the Word of God because God inspired their humanauthors and because God still speaks to us through the Bible." (TheCatechism, Book of Common Prayer page 853)
