A message from Senior Teacher Jerlin

Five months have passed since I started working at Phuket Has Been

Good To Us and I am loving every minute of it.

There have been many changes since our last newsletter, in terms of

our curriculum we have changed from baseline testing to diagnostic

assessment at all levels. We hope this will help us see what levels our

students are at, identify any learning needs, and find ways to address

them.

Coconut Club has been redesigned to have a monthly theme in order

to promote the learning of new vocabulary, the idea of this is that the

students learn extra English while having fun. We also continue to

have Saturday Swimming and Reading Group sessions and have or-

ganized more birthday parties.

Recently, our teachers were invited to design an English workshop that

would support the current needs of all the Thai teachers in Kamala

School. The sessions were well received by the Thai teachers and the

school directors have given positive feedback and are already discuss-

ing how we could work together more closely in the future.

I hope you all enjoy this newsletter,

Jerlin!

Sponsored Teacher Meghan Hayes

Star Student - Na-Kwan Primary 3

Na-Kwan, in my Primary 3 class, is just nine years old and is one

of my brightest students. This semester she scored 100% on all

of her classwork and tests. Yet, at the beginning of the school

year, she was definitely the shyest student I taught. Over these

last few months she has grown in confidence. In Coconut Club

she is now one of the first students to participate in a game or

start an art project. In class she now eagerly participates and

helps her peers.

I am truly looking forward to teaching her next semester, and I

can’t wait to watch her continue to grow as an amazing student

and a beautiful person!

Martin’s Star Student — Asuanee Primary 2

I am excited to introduce Asuanee as my Primary 2 star stu-

dent for the end of semester one. She is my star student be-

cause of her enthusiasm and good leadership skills.

Asuanee has been a spectacular student, she’s always helping

out her fellow classmates when given any activity. Her eager-

ness to learn English portrays a bright future.

Asuanee likes reading during her free time, and her favorite

book is ‘’Have You Filled a Bucket Today?’’ By Carol McCloud.

This book teaches children the importance of helping others

using the metaphor of filling people’s buckets, I think it’s a great

read for all the students. Please keep it going Asuanee!

Bliss Beach Club Birthday Party

Every few months teachers and volunteers take students

who are about to have their birthdays to Bliss Beach Club

to celebrate. In August, 40 birthday children spent the day

trying out new musical instruments and playing party

games like pin the tail on the donkey as well as having fun

with arts and crafts. They also enjoyed some delicious

birthday cake thanks to Outrigger and got messy while

making their own pizzas. Thanks to Exotic Voyage, whose

mini buses take the children to Bliss Beach Club, we make

sure all the residential children get the chance to celebrate

their birthday and they really love the parties. We can’t wait

to celebrate our next birthday party soon!

Since our last newsletter the students have been

very busy with activities outside the classroom.

There have been more Saturday swimming lessons

and they have been continuing with Saturday read-

ing group. There have also been some great after-

noons filled with fun activities thanks to Coconut

Club. Our teachers are great at coming up with new

ideas to keep the students entertained.

Can you Sponsor a Coconut Club Child?

This is 6 year old Got, the youngest residential student at Kama-

la school. Got has a great smile that he loves sharing with every-

one. He is a big fan of Coconut Club, enjoying cooking and Lego.

The Sponsor a Child programme costs just 10,000 baht a year

and will provide Got with English language lessons, extracurricu-

lar activities and field trips for one year. It allows us to truly make

a difference in his life and in his future.

Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if

you would like to help Got have a brighter future.

XL Catlin

As some of you may have noticed if you have seen

us driving around - having been acquired by the XL

Group, long term sponsors of our car have been re-

branded to XL Catlin. XL Catlin are in the top 10

global reinsurers and we are delighted to have their

continued support through both sponsorship of a car

and a class at Kamala School.

Teacher Hamant at Kalim School

Thanks to the continued sponsorship of Baan Rim

Pa we are able to provide Kalim School with an

English teacher for all 100 children aged 5 to 12.

After 3 years teaching at Kalim

School Teacher Agie left the

children in the capable hands of Teacher Hamant. He

has been teaching in Kalim since May this year and he

tells us that his students have been having fun learning

English and applying its practical uses in day-to-day life.

A visit from Martin Brown of Fleet Alliance

The chance to play football for your country is an opportunity not to be missed so when I was asked to join

the Scotland team for the Seniors World Cup I couldn’t refuse. The generosity of our hosts and the beauty of

Phuket left a lasting impression on me, particularly if I think back to the dreadful events of 2004. As the man-

aging director of Fleet Alliance, a leading UK fleet management provider, I was reminded of the way our staff

came together to raise funds for the disaster relief programme. Charitable support is something very close to

the hearts of everyone at Fleet Alliance. In Phuket I met Peter Hamilton of PHBGTU who told me about the

amazing work the Foundation does. Their efforts resonated deeply with me as just the sort of worthwhile

cause we enjoy supporting through ‘Fleet Alliance Loves’. We have a mantra at Fleet Alliance: ‘True suc-

cess is never measured in profit alone’ and my time in Phuket bears this

out. I came to win a football tournament, but instead, left with an apprecia-

tion of the work carried out by PHBGTU, the real difference it makes, and a

desire to show my support. That’s got to be a win by anyone’s standards!

Thank you Fleet Alliance Loves for donating over 50,000 baht.

A Night at the Opera

Our most recent fundraising event at Trisara was a huge success

with guests enjoying a fabulous evening. They were wowed by

performances from Thailand’s first and only pop-opera band

FIVERA and violinist Alex Grieg from Mai Khao Dreams. By the

end everyone was up on their feet dancing! The evening raised

enough money to employ a qualified English teacher for a year

and we can't wait to host the event again next year.

Ongoing Supporters

Island Technology, who have donated our technology needs since the

charity started, have kindly donated a much needed new desktop to

our Director Tina as well as covering the cost of our Domain Name.

We are so grateful for their ongoing support!
