PLEASE ENJOY YOUR COFFEE OUTSIDE OF THE SANCTUARY.

The First Word on WorshipThis Sunday we begin a series that will take us through Easter Sunday, dv. Together, we will be looking at Romans 8, which Derek Thomas calls “the greatest chapter in the Bible.” And the reason why this is the greatest chapter is that it moves us from no condemnation to no separation, from justification and adoption to sanctification and glorification. Here is 100 proof Gospel, good news for sinners who deserve the wrath and curse of God.

Our prayer for 2020 is that God will cause us to revel in his justifying grace and to live new lives empowered by the Gospel. It is fitting that God calls us to worship this morning with the words of Psalm 32: God forgives us the iniquity of our sin; he does not count it against us. Instead, he counts us as righteous in his sight, only for the righteousness of Christ imputed to us and received by faith alone. Such frees us to confess our sins, to receive God’s grace, and to affirm that our comfort in this life and in our death is that we belong to such a faithful Savior! May God grant us such comfort this day!

Welcome to Independent Presbyterian Church! If you are a visitor, thank you for joining us. Please be sure to stop by our Visitor Welcome Center in the Rotunda, where we will have a gift for you. Any questions about our church? We encourage you to ask an usher or member on your aisle. Our Welcome Center greeters are also eager to assist you or answer your questions. Please see an usher if you need a hearing amplification device. More opportunities for teaching and fellowship at IPC are listed in the back of this bulletin. Visitors interested in joining IPC are invited to attend our next Pathway Class Weekend for Prospective Members, February 7-8, 2020. For more information or to register, please contact Tameria Rackley, (901) 685-8206, or [email protected] Sunday morning Worship Services are shown via live stream in the Chapel for families with babies/young children, latecomers, or any other reason you might be more comfortable there. Additionally, a fully-staffed nursery is available during all services. We also live stream our 8:30 and 11:00 services at ipcmemphis.org. Please note: the link will be active only on Sunday morning. In addition, audio recordings of this morning’s sermon are available in the bookstore immediately following the 8:30 worship service, or during the following week on our website.

As you enter the Sanctuary, please silence your mobile devices.

The Call to Worship Psalm 32

The Minister: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

The Congregation: Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

The Minister: I acknowledged my sin to you, and did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.

The Congregation: Therefore, let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found.

The Minister: Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy all you upright in heart! Amen! Let us worship God!

The Assurance of Pardon “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” — Romans 8:1

The Corporate Confession of Sin O Lord God, eternal and almighty Father, we confess and acknowledge unfeignedly before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in iniquity and corruption, prone to do evil, incapable of any good, and that in our depravity we transgress your holy commandments without end or ceasing. We are grieved that we have offended you; and we condemn ourselves and our sins with true repentance, beseeching your grace to relieve our distress. O God and Father, most gracious and full of compassion, have mercy upon us in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we pray, Amen. — Communion Liturgy of John Calvin

Please sign and pass the Friendship Pad at this time.

The Ascription of Praise HyfrydolJesus! I do now receive him, more than all in him I find;

Children (Kindergarten) may be dismissed to their worship leader.

The Statement of Faith Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1

The Minister: What is your only comfort in life and in death?

The Congregation: That I am not my own, but belong — body and soul, in life and in death — to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and he has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

The Prayer of Intercession and The Lord’s PrayerOur Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Offertory “Praise We Sing to Thee” Haydn/Luvaas

John Chase, Director Praise we sing to thee, thou mighty Ruler King forever,

Praise we sing to thee dear Father, we would fail thee never. All the joys of nature tell us ever of thy wond’rous pow’r.

Still thy tender grace and mercy keep us ev’ry hour,Praise we sing to thee most Holy, Praise forever more!

Grateful hymns of thanks we raise for all the gifts thou dost ordain.Lord of Hosts who o’er the wond’rous realm of heav’n doth reign.
