A New Season at the Palace

The Friends of Iolani Palace supports, guides, and manages Palace activities, providing caring stewardship for this Hawaiian landmark and national treasure. It currently administers the Palace under a lease with the State of Hawaii.

Mrs. Liliuokalani Kawananakoa Morris, grandniece of Queen Kapiolani, founded The Friends of Iolani Palace in 1966. Since that time, The Friends have supported and guided the restoration and management of the Palace building by obtaining donations and grant monies, spearheading efforts to acquire original Palace

furnishings, many of which have been scattered throughout the world, and actively managing and assisting with Palace activities.

KAMAAINA SUNDAYSOn the second Sunday of most months, Iolani Palace opens its doors to kamaaina guests to visit

the historic landmark for free.

Two tour options are offered: a docent Guided Tour and a Self-Led Audio Tour. Both options include

a tour of the first and second floors of Iolani Palace, which includes the staterooms and private

quarters of the royal monarchies. The tour concludes with a self-guided exploration of the basement

gallery exhibits showcasing the royal collections, restored Kitchen, and Chamberlain’s Office.

Guided tours: 9:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. Audio tours: 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Tickets are distributed on a first come, first served basis. A valid Hawaii state ID, Hawaii driver’s

license, or Active Military ID with proof of Hawaii residency is required to receive complimentary

tickets. Visitors may purchase tickets at the regular price.

In 2016, we marked the 50th anniversary of the founding of our organization by

Princess Liliuokalani Kawananakoa Morris. As part of this commemoration, we

gave our quarterly newsletter a makeover and a new name — Ke Kiai o Ka Iolani

Hale (The Guardian of Iolani Palace).

We also celebrated our 50th anniversary with a special poi supper fundraiser in

September. See the photos of the fun and festivities on pages 4 and 5.

There were new additions to the Palace collections. At midnight on November 16, 2015,

two new white kahili were installed in the Throne Room. Crafted by cultural expert

and master kahili maker, Shad Kane, the kahili are similar in color to those used in

King Kalakaua’s formal coronation ceremony in 1883. In March 2016, we unveiled

the first of four monarchy era reproduction dresses when Queen Kapiolani’s lei hulu

gown was previewed at Bloomingdale’s. You can read about all the dresses and the

designer on page 3.

In Spring 2016, we launched the first 3D virtual tour of a Hawaiian historic site,

allowing online visitors to walk through the iconic royal residence from their

computer anywhere in the world. Iolani Palace has always been ahead of its time,

and creating a virtual tour was a natural evolution in embracing new technologies

as King Kalakaua had done over a century ago.

Our organization continues to grow with the hiring of Teresa Valencia as our

Director of Curation and Education, as well as an entirely new curatorial staff.

We also have a new Shops Manager, Joseph Valencia. Learn more about our

newest staff members on pages 6 and 7.

A series of long-awaited renovations will finally begin, first with the historic

Kanaina Building where our administrative offices are located. We’ll then be

repairing/repainting the ceiling on the 2nd floor of the Palace and replacing

the roof of Hale Koa, otherwise known as the Barracks. Later in 2017, we hope

to commence construction on the new basement galleries, which represents

the final phase in the complete restoration of the Palace.

Iolani Palace’s newest additions to its collections are helping to bring history to life. These items help bring

to life a time when royal balls with dancing, lively music, and elegantly dressed guests were hosted by

the King and Queen.

Four replica gowns worn by Queen Kapiolani and Queen Liliuokalani

during their reigns grace the Throne Room. Queen Kapiolani’s renowned

peacock feather gown is showcased alongside her famed lei hulu dress

and reproductions of Queen Liliuokalani’s ribbon gown and her ostrich

feather and lilac gown display fine craftsmanship.

The Palace commissioned Hawaii Island-based historic dress designer

Iris Viacrusis to recreate the iconic wardrobe pieces, which demonstrated

how Hawaiian royals incorporated elements of traditional Hawaiian

chiefly adornment with modern western aesthetics of the day.

“The alii were very fashion-forward for their day,” says Iris. “While they

sought out the top dressmakers in New York, London and Paris, they put

their own Hawaiian twist in the designs with lei hulu, peacock feathers

and other elements that were rooted in their culture. Kapiolani’s lei

hulu dress can be seen as a precursor to the modern day holoku.”

Iris created the dresses using Victorian-era structure and materials

similar to what would have been found during that time period. He

conducted extensive research utilizing historic documents and photos

to recreate the same attention to detail under which the original gowns

were created. Lei Hulu of Hilo handcrafted the extensive feather work

featured on the gowns.

“We are always looking for new and creative ways to interpret the

life and times of the monarchy,” says Iolani Palace Director of Curation

and Education Teresa Valencia. “The addition of these garments to our

collection brings another element of Palace life for visitors to experience.”

The Alii Gown Reproduction project was made possible by generous

donations from Judy Leach, who also helped create the superb feather

work on the lei hulu gown, and other individuals. The Palace hopes to

expand the project with four more gowns as additional funding is secured.

THE FRIENDS OF IOLANI PALACE

50 thAnniversary

Iolani Palace and the grounds were dressed in all its splendor in celebration of

the 50th anniversary of The Friends of Iolani Palace during a gala poi supper

fundraiser on Saturday, September 24, 2016. The event commemorated the work

began half a century ago by a group of community volunteers to preserve the

iconic landmark and symbol of Hawaiian history.

Iolani Palace has served as a symbol of pride for the Hawaiian people and represents

the prestige of the Hawaiian Monarchy’s reign over a modern nation. Princess

Liliuokalani Kawananakoa Morris, grandniece of Queen Kapiolani, and other women

of the Junior League of Honolulu, founded The Friends of Iolani Palace in 1966. After

decisions were made for state legislature to vacate the Palace and relocate to the

new Capitol Building on South Beretania Street, these women worked to preserve

and manage the restoration of the Palace building by obtaining donations and

heading efforts to acquire original furnishings and artifacts scattered throughout

the world.

The evening began with cocktails on the lawn as guests mixed and mingled and

enjoyed music by the Royal Hawaiian Band. Emcee Manu Boyd welcomed guests

to the dining tent with a beautiful oli of the Kawanakoa genealogy before joining

co-emcee Mahealani Richardson on the front steps of the Palace. Halau Pua Alii

Ilima and Halau Hula Ka Noeau performed a moving rendition of Aua ia, which was

followed by a tribute to King Kalakaua by the late Palani Vaughan.

As guests enjoyed a poi supper prepared by Haili’s Hawaiian Food, they were

serenaded by the music of Kawika Kahiapo. Following dinner, guests were treated

to a special video presentation showcasing the restoration of Iolani Palace, which

was produced by Ulu ulu: The Henry Kuualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of

Hawaii and the Academy of Creative Media, University of Hawaii — West Oahu.

The evening culminated with the incomparable Amy Hanaialii taking the stage and

her beautiful voice filling the air.

Throughout the evening, attendees continued to show their support by sponsoring

various areas of need indicated by The Friends’ “Royal Wishes” list. These “wishes”

are geared towards enabling the Palace to continue sharing its significance in

Hawaiian history with kamaaina and people around the world. The fundraiser gala

was a great success and raised nearly $130,000 in support of Palace activities,

educational outreach and preservation efforts.

The Friends of Iolani Palace would like to extend a heartfelt mahalo to all who attended

MEET THE NEW CURATION AND EDUCATION TEAM

Iolani Palace Historian Zita Cup Choy is a familiar

face on the Palace grounds. She was a member of

the first docent class back in 1977 and shared in the

excitement as the Palace was reopened to the public

in May of 1978.

Zita received her degree in elementary education

and spent time teaching in Guam and Molokai. She has

always loved history and especially enjoyed hearing

stories of historical figures. Zita volunteered as a

docent, sharing stories of Hawaii’s monarchs with

thousands of visitors, as well as in the Palace Shop.

In her full-time job at the time, she conducted in-service

training and new hire orientations, which made her

a welcomed member of the Palace’s task force to

update its volunteer training program in 2002.

In 2003, Zita became a full-time staff member at the

Palace adding to her responsibilities of docent education.

She also became the museum registrar, which allowed

her to gain deep knowledge of the Palace’s collection. Zita

has conducted extensive research about the Palace and

the monarchy era and says it’s her favorite part of the

job. She loves delving into the depths of the archives

and discovering information to help support a wide

variety of Palace programs and initiatives.

Zita loves researching history so much she does it in

volunteer capacities as well. She is currently assisting

Washington Place in researching how this residence

was used by the governors and the first ladies of the

territorial and state governments.

This group spent 13 weeks learning about the Palace’s history, its collections and strategies for facilitating tours to

engage the diverse range of visitors. In addition to attending lectures, the training also included weekly readings,

field trips, and regular practice tour sessions.

After passing a rigorous written text and oral exam, our latest graduates join the elite corps of docents who share the

rich history of Iolani Palace and the Hawaiian monarchy with visitors from around the globe.

If you have an interest in Hawaiian history, like to “talk story,” and enjoy interacting with visitors of all ages and from different

Teresa Valencia was named Director of Curation and Education for Iolani Palace

in early 2016 and has been very busy ever since! She oversees the restoration

efforts of the Palace and manages its royal collections, while also developing new

exhibits and partnerships, as well as expanding the Palace’s educational outreach

in the community. Luckily, Teresa has a team of people supporting her. Let’s meet

the team!

Before joining Iolani Palace, Teresa held various education, research and outreach

positions at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Golden Gate National Parks

Conservancy, and the California State Indian Museum. She was also an intern

at Iolani Palace during the summer of 2015. Teresa received a Bachelor of Arts

in Anthropology from The Ohio State University and is currently pursuing a

Master of Arts in Museum Studies and Master of Business Administration at

John F. Kennedy University.

Leona Hamano brings nearly two decades of archeological and museum collection

experience to her position as the Palace’s Collection Manager. She’s held various

positions across Polynesia with stops in New Zealand, French Polynesia, Guam

and of course, Hawaii. Leona holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the

University of Washington and a master’s degree in museum studies from Massey.

Education Coordinator Marcus Ortiz also interned with the Palace before joining

the curatorial team full-time. He also held internships with the Smithsonian

Institution, Hula Preservation Society, and Western Pacific Regional Fishery

Management Council. Marcus received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hawaiian

studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Halia Hester is the latest addition to the curatorial team. She is the Palace’s Collections

Specialist and manages the collection database. Halia also transitioned to a full-time

position after interning. She is current pursuing a degree in Pacific Island Studies

from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

THE MAN OF THE SHOPS

As the new shop manager at Iolani Palace, Joseph

Valencia brings with him an abundance of experience

working in high volume retail environments. Most

recently, he was the Assistant Manager at Lands End

Lookout, a national park located in the San Francisco

Bay area. Joe also worked as supervisor at the Golden

Gate Bridge Pavilion and as a sales associate at the

Alcatraz Visitor Center. In his new role, he will help

restructure the Palace’s retail operations to enhance

the guest experience.

Joe’s new job at Iolani Palace brings the local boy back

home. He was born and raised on Kauai and graduated

from Kapaa High School. He earned his undergraduate

degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Sandor of Australia Crown Earrings and Pendant are

of handmade silver with gold electro plating. Both

measure ½” x 5/8”. The earrings retails for $110 and

the pendant for $90.

Palace Shops SPOTLIGHT

VIRTUAL REALITYIolani Palace partnered with LNG3D Hawaii to create the first 3D model of a Hawaii historic site that allows visitors

to virtually tour the historic landmark online. Visitors can roam through the Palace beyond the stanchions, climb up

the iconic koa staircase, and see the awe-inspiring artifacts on display using their computers or mobile devices.

Of course, the 3D virtual tour cannot replace the experience of physically visiting the Palace, but it does give guests

an opportunity to view artifacts in more detail or give them an idea of what they can expect when visiting.

LNG3D Hawaii, a subsidiary of one of Canada’s leading architectural and 3D visualization firms LNG Studios, was

given access to areas not typically allowed to the public and developed the 3D tour and doll house model using

Matterport 3D scanning technology that created an immersive experience of the interior. Over 200 scan locations

were done to 3D map the Palace’s interior. This project also captured drone aerial video and imagery of the Palace

exterior and grounds, as well as interior architectural photos. The resulting three-dimensional tour allows visitors to

“walkthrough” the Palace from anywhere in the world.

The project was made possible through a $30,000 grant from the Robert Emens Black Fund at the Hawaii

Community Foundation. The 3D virtual tour of Iolani Palace is available online at www.IolaniPalace.org.

The grounds of Iolani Palace were filled with festivity at the celebration of King

Kalakaua’s 180th Birthday on November 16, 2016. The Palace was draped in

colorful bunting and Hawaiian flags reminiscent of the décor used at the King’s

Birthday Jubilee in 1886.

Hosted by the Friends of Iolani Palace and the Royal Guard of the Hawaii Air

National Guard, the celebration also featured concert of monarchy era music

by the Royal Hawaiian Band and Prince David Kawananakoa reviewed members

of the Royal Guard from the Palace front steps before they proceeded to their

posts at the Palace’s main gateways. A commemoration of King Kalakaua by the

Hawaii State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Lodge Le Progres

I’Oceanie, and the Hawaiian Royal Societies rounded out the day’s festivities.

King Kalakaua’ s180TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

The Friends of Iolani Palace was honored by the Better Business Bureau of Hawaii as the

2016 BBB Torch Awards Non-profit Recipient. Awards were given to those who “demonstrate

exceedingly high standards of behavior toward customers, employees and shareholders, adhere

to truthful advertising and sales practices, and have a reputation for noteworthy contributions

in their industry and community.”

Honored with BBB TORCH AWARD

The Friends values truth and ethics in all of its endeavors and holds its team

to the highest standards. Receiving the BBB Torch Award is a testament to

how we embody our mission and values, as well as our efforts to maintain the

integrity of the organization.

This recognition also acknowledges the teamwork between professionals and

volunteers, who transformed a magnificent, but badly abused and deteriorated

relic of the past, into a beautiful, public historic house considered by many

museum experts to be the finest in the world. Further, it shows an appreciation

for our involvement within the community, through Kamaaina Sundays, educational

programs, and partnerships with nonprofit and cultural organizations.

“We are thrilled to receive such a prestigious award for reflecting our mission

to preserve, restore, interpret, share and celebrate the unique cultural, historical

and spiritual qualities of Iolani Palace and its grounds for the benefit of native

On the evenings of December 28–29, 2016, guests were invited to experience

the Palace by moonlight in honor of Queen Kapiolani’s birthday. The evening

tours created an atmosphere reminiscent of celebrations held during the reign

of the Hawaiian Monarchy.

Adding a special touch to this year’s evening tours, guests were greeted by the sight

of Friends of Iolani Palace Board member Debbie Nakanelua-Richards gracing the

Grand Staircase and donning the reproduction of Kapiolani’s famed lei hulu gown.

Other pieces from the new Alii Gown Reproduction project were also on display —

Queen Kapiolani’s famous peacock gown in the Throne Room, and Queen Liliuokalani’s

ribbon dress in the Blue Room and her and ostrich feather and lilac gown in the

second floor Gold Room.

Visitors were serenaded by Monarchy era music as they were guided throughout

the home of Hawaii’s beloved Queen including live music in the Blue Room from

Hawaii Opera Theatre soloists, hula performances in the Throne Room, and

additional entertainment in the Upper Hall. The night also provided visitors a

rare opportunity to ascend up the Palace’s famous koa staircase. As guests waited

to enter the Palace, they enjoyed live music and hula performances by various halau.
