From October 18‐20, seniors of the Class of 2019 forged new friendships and bonded over adventures and games on the island of Kaua‘i. The fun began

Students from the Cosplay Club shared some Halloween treats in the form of custom built costumes to Shriner's Hospital for Children and the Ronald

They were the only team to score a perfect on the Scavenger Hunt round and came in first overall.  Great job, Mathletes! Thanks to the math team

volunteers who organized and ran the event.

Economics & Entrepreneurship visits PACT

The Economics & Entrepreneurship classes recently visited the offices of Parents and Children Together (PACT).  The President and CEO of PACT, Ryan

Kusumoto '93 and also a current parent of Madison '20 and Marissa '22, spoke to the classes.  He shared with them the various services and programs

that PACT offers and then took them for a tour where the students got to see the Head Start preschool classes.

One of the many topics that Kusumoto discussed was the concept of One Team and how that impacted him as a student at 'Iolani.  He emphasized how

we also have to take that concept and go beyond the boundaries of our school.  One Team should also involve our community and our world.  The

students took this to heart and will apply this to their final business plan projects at the end of the semester where they have to create a business that

helps the community in some way.

First Tech Challenge Robo cs

'Iolani Robo cs hosted the first league match of the 2018‐2019 FTC season on Saturday. Our four 7th and 8th‐grade ‘Iobo cs FTC teams have been

working hard since September under the guidance of senior FRC robo cs team mentors. They’ve built, tested, and iterated their robot designs.

Yesterday they finally got to compete with their robots, and they did well! There was a lot of excitement as this year’s game, Rover Ruckus, commenced;

matches were held between the fourteen compe ng teams.

Yesterday's event was a success, largely in part to all of the volunteers (including parent volunteers). We couldn’t have done it without their help, and

we want to say “Mahalo” to all who contributed. Our next match will be held on November 11th on Kaua’i. Please stay tuned to see all that ‘Iobo cs is

doing this season. Here is an exci ng clip from Saturday’s event: h ps://youtu.be/PubLjYnAiRw

fourth‐grade class to do their stream work of catching & documen ng na ve & invasive fish. Luckily, they were able to join the other half of the class

A er singing their oli kahea, they met Kalena & Lilia, who taught them amazing things about the ahupua’a and the watershed that ‘Iolani School is a part

of. They listened to mo’olelo or stories about Hawaiian gods who made the wahi (place) of Kanewai so special. They also learned about indigenous and

endemic plants, and about the importance of the kahawai (stream) that gives life to the area.

8th graders tackle contemporary sustainability issues with tradi onal prac ces

Last week in the Sullivan Center for Innova on and Leadership, 8th graders par cipated in workshops with masters of various tradi onal Hawaiian

prac ces to learn how islanders a thousand years ago met their material needs using resources at hand.  They also learned how these prac ces

con nue, have adapted and are s ll in use today.

Experts demonstrated the harves ng and use of pandanus leaves, paperbark tree fibers and palm fronds, showing how they were used for making

cordage, containers and cloth.  In these hands‐on workshops students got to harvest tree bark and pound it into cloth, and weave pandanus and palm

leaves using tradi onal weaving techniques. They also saw how these are adapted in innova ve ways today, including prac cal biodegradable materials

which could replace single use petroleum based plas c products which crowd landfills and pollute the sea.

Other experts reviewed the various agricultural and medicinal plants that are endemic to Hawaii or brought by the first Polynesian se lers, how they

were tradi onally used and how they are s ll used today.  Students learned about the medicinal quali es and uses of a variety of plants and got to

pound an an sep c poul ce. They also cooked and ate a variety of plants including sweet potatoes, sweet potato leaves, taro, breadfruit, turmeric and

sugarcane.  And discussed the nutri onal values of these healthy, locally grown foods.

In addi on to various community experts, ʻIolaniʻs own director of campus Sustainability programs and Garden specialist helped support the various

plant and cooking ac vi es throughout the week.  Other faculty shared their experience and knowledge in tradi onal naviga on prac ces and in

tradi onal weaving.Through these hands‐on ac vi es, students gained a deeper apprecia on for the ingenuity of the ancient inhabitants of Hawaii and

an understanding of how tradi onal prac ces are not lost in the past but are con nuing today and may provide valuable insights and answers to urgent

contemporary problems.

Mind Your Grindz

On Friday night, students and families came together to prepare and eat a delicious meal and while learning about the impact of animal agriculture on

curriculum ini ated by the English course non‐fic on text, Omnivore's Dilemma.

Students prepared all plant‐based dishes led by the Food Sustainability Club. Families then sat down to watch the educa on version of the documentary

film, Cowspiracy, and engage in discussion led by community partners of the Good Food Movement.
