While Father Pat is away, he has asked Jordan Haddad, Ph.D. (Candidate) [and great friend] to write a 4 part series on our Catholic faith and the culture in which we live. Mr. Haddad is a learned Associate Professor of Dogma c Theology and the Director of Lay Ministry Programs and Lay Forma on at Notre Dame Seminary here in New Orleans. He is also husband to his beau ful wife, Shannon, who is the Director of the Archdiocesan Retreat Center, and daddy to an adorable li le girl named Lilly.
S . A T C St. Augus ne (354-430 AD), one of the great early Church Fathers of our
Catholic faith, once famously wrote in his work The City of God that our world and history are defined by the existence of two compe ng “ci es,” by which he meant two over-arching disposi ons, ways of life, and communi es with which we are affiliated. These ci es are defined, first and foremost, by their “loves,” for it is always the person or thing that we love, that we center our lives around, that defines who we are and how we live our lives. On the one hand, there is the “Earthly City,” which is marked by a disordered love of self and the things of this world, violence, and disarray, and, on the other hand, there is the “City of God,” whose defining features are love of God and neighbor, peace, virtue, and joy.
While it might be temp ng to think of these two “ci es” as exis ng separately and side-by-side, one “here” and the other “over there,” St. Augus ne instead argued that these ci es are intermixed and intermingled, both geographically and, even, personally. Saints and sinners walk hand in hand, and amongst the sinful there are future saints and seeds of goodness wai ng to take root, just as among the saints there are s ll sinful tendencies to be conquered and redeemed, lest we abandon the gi of salva on offered us in Christ.
As Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the famous Russian novelist and poli cal prisoner, once wrote, “The line separa ng good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between poli cal par es either – but right through every human heart…even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained. And even in the best of all hearts, there remains…an uprooted small corner of evil.” Or, to use biblical imagery, sheep and goats, weeds and wheat, exist side-by-side both in this world and in the depths of our own hearts.
St. Augus ne’s two ci es are helpful for us today because our country and local communi es have been granted the opportunity to urgently re-examine the “city” to which we belong. When all is said and done, do we belong to the Earthly City, which is defined by love of self and the things of this world over and against God and our neighbors, or do we belong to God’s City, which is defined by love of God and love of neighbor even to the point of our own discomfort and death to self? Whether we realize it or not, we all belong to one of these two ci es, and it is according to our ci zenship that we shall be judged when we meet Christ face-to-face.
To belong to the City of God, which Augus ne reveals is the Body of Christ, the Church, does not mean that we abandon our earthly ci es and the trials and tribula ons that accompany them. By no means! To be a faithful Catholic does not mean that we are no longer South Louisianans or American ci zens. Rather, the local city in which we dwell, such as Slidell, for example, which is not the same thing as St. Augus ne’s “Earthly City,” defined as it is by its disordered love, can only truly be healed and redeemed if we work as leaven from within to transform it from the disordered tendencies and loves of the Earthly City and to the ordered love of the City of God and of Christ. This is, when all is said and done, the very mission of the Church, which is concerned not only with the salva on of individuals but also with the transforma on of the world into the Kingdom of God.
This is an urgent task in every age, but it is par cularly pressing in our present-day American context because of the social, cultural, and poli cal unrest that we are all tangibly experiencing. Since our common social and poli cal life is in many ways a fruit of the type of culture that we as a people have inherited and ac vely contribute, I will offer some reflec ons over the next three weeks in the parish bulle n on the rela onship between Catholicism and culture. Through these reflec ons I hope to offer you, the St. Luke the Evangelist community, some food for thought as to how each of us can play a pivotal role in transforming our local community from the disordered loves of the Earthly City to the rightly ordered and authen cally Chris an love of the City of God.

6 | SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH
A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID Dear friends,
I have been a bit silent during this me of quaran ne. Almost everyone has strong feelings regarding the various aspects of our experience in the last few months, so that I feel whatever I say to one group will simply reinforce the opinions of those on the other side. If I bring up how I believe most masks to be in-effec ve at protec ng us from the coronavirus, I would be seen as inci ng people to disregard the health and safety of others. How uncharitable and unchris an of me! If I talk about how public mask-wearing can help those who feel vulnerable to emerge from quaran ne and return to normal ac vi es with less anxie-ty, thus benefi ng their health, I would be seen as capitula ng to government overreach, as enabling a
power grab by other godless forces who want to control our lives (and trust me, they do), or perhaps as buying into a pseudo-scien fic narra ve of panic and hysteria.
Whatever I say, I can’t win.
Let me repeat: I have avoided wri ng much about the craziness of the last few months because I know people will misinterpret whatever I say, no ma er how carefully I say it, either because they want to make my words agree with theirs, or because they are not capable of drawing dis nc ons and picking up on nuance. But I will take the risk, because there are a few more things I need to say to you.
First: If you want to shake my hand, hug me, or talk to me with your mask off, I am totally comfortable with that! Unless you let me know this, however, I will con nue wearing my mask assuming that it’s what you would prefer, and I will not a empt to shake your hand unless you extend your hand to me. To my mind, the only important reason we wear masks in church is to make sure that people who are concerned about being around crowds at this me can feel comfortable enough to come to church. Since my mask is helping people come to Mass, it’s a sacrifice I will con nue to make, as I’m sure you all will for now.
Second: I have men oned this in homilies several mes, but let me repeat: every wound to the mys cal Body of Christ hurts the en re Body. Therefore there is a very real need for every single one of us to work for the healing of wounds caused by racism. Without healing, violence will only con nue, as it has year a er year. The Body of Christ is in agony. And healing does not start with persuading other people to see things our way. Healing does not even start with poli cal change! Healing starts by listening. And actually listening—without a running commentary of judgment in our heads—is hard! First of all, we can’t listen unless we have someone to listen to, who is willing to share. If we only associate with people who have the same experiences as us, we won’t have access to understand where those with vastly different experiences are coming from. Secondly, once we have someone with a different experience that we can listen to, we have to listen to them without dispu ng their experience or perspec ve.
Fr. Joshua Johnson is a young African-American priest who was a seminarian with me several years ago, and who is now an awe-some priest in the Diocese of Baton Rouge. His dad was a police captain, and his mom is white. But most importantly, he is in love with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and as a priest he has commi ed himself to serve the One Who Is Truth Himself and to pro-claim that Truth. If you don’t know where to start in addressing the problem of racism, you can start by praying, and then you can go look up Fr. Josh’s recent episode on the Ave Explores podcast, other recent interviews of him, or perhaps his own podcast Ask Fr. Josh. This is one way to begin seeking to understand a different perspec ve, no ma er on which side of the issue you currently stand!
In so many moral crusades, silence is said to implicate the one who is silent, to make him complicit with whatever moral outrage is taking place. I believe that in general this is true. However, what happens when no ma er what you say, you’re wrong? What hap-pens when you’re so unfamiliar with others’ different experiences that you don’t even realize that ac ons or words you think are helpful are actually hur ul? Maybe then it’s be er to be silent and listen. That act of listening can itself speak very loudly.
What has been your experience of COVID-19, of racism and recent events, or of the Church in general? Come talk to me at St. Luke Church. I’m ready to listen.

What does a dispensa on from Mass mean?
A dispensa on from the diocesan bishop releases Catholics from fulfilling their Sunday obliga on (Mass). Since public Masses are limited in the Archdiocese of New Orleans un l further no ce, this means that if you live in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, the right thing to do is to stay home for your safety and the safety of others. Though there is a sadness for not being able to par cipate at Mass, one should not feel guilty for not going to Mass. You have a free conscience to stay home.
