  • F A T H E R J A R E DHello, St. Luke family! And happy New Year!!

For the past three weeks, we have been talking about and reflecting on what it means to dream — how to dream, daring to dream, and joining together in a dream.

Now it’s time to flesh this dream out!

This coming Sunday, January 10th, we will join the archdiocese in beginning a year dedicated to the honoring, worshipping, and reverencing of our Lord in the Most Holy Eucharist, in union with St. Joseph.

So, to begin our dreaming, let us dive deep in discernment over how the Lord is calling us to love Him more deeply and reverence Him more sincerely in the Most Holy Eucharist.

Though science may tell us that we dream in black and white, help us to put this dream in living color by visiting www.saintlukeslidell.org/YOE.

There you will find a tool for helping me, as your shepherd, to discern how we, as a whole flock, are being called to grow in our relationship with this living Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

How are we, as a parish family, being called to be more reverent and prayerful in the presence of the Eucharist? How are we being called to take more seriously our time spent in the presence of the Eucharist?

How are we being called to be a more Eucharistic people, a people who make Christ present on earth? How can our relationship with our Lord in the Eucharist make us more faithful and more loving to others?

Join me in prayerful reflection over these questions as we together strive to give our Eucharistic Lord His due, that all praise, adoration, worship, and devotion may be His, both now and forever.

When a family is getting ready for the birth of a baby, or helping a family member with a difficult illness, or dealing with the death of a loved one, the members of Martha’s Ministry here at St. Luke step in to make a delicious meal and help them feel the love of their parish. If you’re a good cook and have a heart for others, our parish can definitely use your help.

Call Sandy Johnson at 985-788-6384 to volunteer. When a family needs our help, Sandy will call you to let you know.

Requests for Martha‘s Ministry MUST be authorized through our main office.

Ushers do a lot at Saint Luke - they welcome our parishioners, they help our priests, and they give our parish its warm, friendly face. We need ushers - and the best thing is that all it takes is a smile and the ability to give an hour of your time to serve the Lord.

Call our Parishioner Liaison, Kay Guard, at 985-641-6429 ext. 207 to find out how you can join our amazing team of men and women.

T H A N K Y O U !Every year, volunteers help dress up our parish and fill the church with the warmth and joy of Christmas. It’s hard work, but thanks to members of our Altar Society and other volunteers, this year, we have been able to get our parish ready in record time. But the Altar Society does significantly more than decorating for holidays. They keep our church beautiful - cleaning, polishing, vaccuming - and keeping everything looking ready for the King of Kings. Just a few minutes every week, make our church a special place to worship God and share communion with one another. If you’d like to join our Altar Society and make great friends, call Kay Rizzotto at 985-707-3621.

    FAT H E R DAV I DDear friends,

Well, the new year is finally here! Some of you have been looking forward to this since last March. Maybe not much has changed since December 31, 2020, but hopefully the change will at least be psychologically helpful for you to put behind you the fears and anxieties of 2020 and to look forward to the blessings and healing that will come in 2021. I pray that “The Year of Grace 2021” (as they say) will truly be a year of grace for you and those around you.

One of my new year’s resolutions is to retire the phrase, “now more than ever,” from my vocabulary. So, let me use it one final time: It is necessary now, perhaps more than ever, that we celebrate a Year of the Eucharist here in our Archdiocese of New Orleans, after a year in which most countries throughout the world were at some point deprived of access to the Eucharist, to one degree or another. The widespread halt of public Masses last year was unprecedented in the history of the Church, and I pray that it may never happen again. Our Year of the Eucharist officially begins on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord next Sunday, January 10. If we have taken the Eucharist for granted in our lives at all, let us do so no longer. Fr. Jared and I are excited to join Archbish-op Aymond and the rest of our archdiocese in putting a spotlight this year on Jesus’ gift of Himself to us in the Eucharist, and the infinite power and graces present and made available to us through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Let’s all get involved in celebrating this Year of the Eucharist! If we have allowed ourselves to take Mass for granted, let’s recommit to attending EVERY Sunday, no excuses (health permitting)! If you’re already doing this, maybe make your new year’s resolution to attend daily Mass, or add to your calendar a commitment to a weekly Eucharistic holy hour in the adoration chapel. We desperately need God and His grace in our lives!!

Pope Francis has also announced a Year of St. Joseph. As we know from our St. Joseph’s Altar traditions here in southeast Louisiana, St. Joseph is a powerful patron in time of pandemic. He came through powerfully for the Sicilians in the Middle Ages, and he can bring us out of this pandemic today. We greatly missed our St. Joseph Altars last year; let’s make sure to turn to him even more this year to intercede for our families, for our health, for all biological and spiritual fathers, for those who are unemployed, and for those who are fearful to not be afraid, as St. Joseph was so strong for the Holy Family in the earliest days of Jesus’ life on earth.

As we celebrate the Holy Family today on their feast day, we pray that through Joseph and Mary’s intercession, and the grace and presence of Jesus, we might make whatever commitments and resolutions are needed so our families are able to receive God’s grace to be transformed into holier families in this new year. If you didn’t get a chance to consecrate your family to the Holy Family this year at Christmas along with the rest of your St. Luke parish family, I encourage you to pick up any of the remaining Knights of Columbus prayer cards in the back of church or look it up online (just search for KC Consecration to the Holy Family) and pray it with your family on this feast of the Holy Family.

I sincerely wish you all a joyful and grace-filled new year, the Year of Our Lord 2021. May you receive true happiness and many blessings from the Lord. So long, 2020; we won’t miss you.

    G R O W I N G I N FA I T HTHURSDAYS January 7, 2020 BEGINNING 2 - 3:30 p.m. Family Life Center

THERE IS NO COST TO PARTICIPATE

This 6 week bible study on the life of Christ taken from the book of Philippians is part of the Lectio Study Series which will help participants to discover the profound importance, meaning, purpose, and beauty of Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. The Latin word lectio means “reading” and often refers to a careful and prayerful reading of Scripture.

Lectio Divina is an ancient practice of enhancing one’s prayer life through the power of God’s Word.

The term itself means “divine reading” of the Sacred Scriptures. It is our hope that by using these simple steps each day as we study Sacred Scripture in LECTIO, we will develop an effective way to study and pray with God’s Word and hear God’s voice in their daily lives.

    • Sacred Reading of the Scriptures (lectio): The reading and rereading of the Scripture passage, with close attention to words, details, themes, and patterns that speak to you.

    • Meditation (meditatio): Meditating or reflecting on what you’ve read to gain understanding. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you spend time pondering what you have read and striving to understand it in meditation.

    • Prayer (oratio): A time to bring your meditative thoughts to God in prayer. Talk with God about how the connections and implications of your meditation on the Scripture affect your life and the lives of those around you.

Thank you for all your support throughout the year for our amazing youth programs at St. Luke! Your financial and prayerful giving allow our community’s teenagers and young adults to discover the beauty of the Catholic faith and remain connected in Christ to their families and faith.

MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS!
