A Play By Larry Kramer

Presented at Wright State University

Jubilee TheatreNovember 16, 2001

Directed by: Nicholas Barnard

The windiest militant trash

Important Persons shout

Is not so crude as our wish:

What mad Nijinsky wrote

About Diaghilev

Is true of the normal heart;

For the error bred in the bone

Of each woman and each man

Craves what it cannot have,

Not universal love

But to be loved alone.

All I have is a voice

To undo the folded lie,

The romantic lie in the brain

Of the sensual man-in-the-street

And the lie of Authority

Whose buildings grope the sky:

There is no such thing as the State

And no one exists alone;

Hunger allows no choice

To the citizen or the police;

We must love one another or die.

- W. H. AudenFrom “September 1,

1939”

During the last weekend of June of 1969, police and

Alcoholic BeverageControl Board agents entered a gay bar, The Stonewall Inn, on

Christopher Street, in New York City.

Allegedly there to look forviolations of the alcohol

control laws, they made the usual homophobic

comments and then, after checking identification, threw

the patrons outof the bar, one by one.

Instead of quietly slipping away into the

night, as they had done for years, hustlers, drag queens,

students andother patrons held their ground

and fought back.

The agents and policewere trapped inside. The

crowd grew. Someone set a fire. More people

came. For three days, people protested.

And for the first time, afterinnumerable years of oppression, the chant,

Gay Power, rang out.

They fought for many rights: marriage, legal

benefits and protections. Unfortunately this

movement would be stifled with a more immediate

concern.
