A Brief History of Christ
the King Parish
Christ the King Parish
began on August 16, 1966
with a decree from Idaho
Bishop Sylvester Treinen.
Until the church was
dedicated on October 29, 1967, Mass was celebrated at St. Paul’s Methodist Church at the
comer of East 17th and St. Clair Road.
The church was designed by Cedric M. Allen and considered an outstanding example of
post-Vatican II church architecture. The theme of the Kingship of Christ was considered in
every detail. The church, with its sweeping spiral roof, proclaimed the Resurrection and
ultimate Kingship of Christ. Within the interior, the cross above the Italian marble altar held
the figure of the Kingship of Christ, symbolically uniting the sacrifice of Calvary with eternal
glory of the Kingdom of Heaven. The architectural concept of the sanctuary, raising liturgi-
cal celebration and communal praise upward toward Heaven, was enhanced by the music
of the majestic pipe organ. Trappist Monks at Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey, Lafayette,
Oregon, crafted the wooden pews. Originally, the annex was one long hall with a kitchen at
one end and a sliding partition to divide it into three classrooms. In 1977, construction was
completed on the Parish Hall. The Rectory, which had originally been located in a house on
Balboa Street and served as the parish office and home for the priests, was completed the
following year. In 1982, the original Stations of the Cross were replaced with very stylized,
simplistic artwork, depicting the Suffering of Calvary. A new copper roof was installed on
the church to solve a problem of leaking in 1983, followed by an addition to the Parish Hall
which provided space for the Knights of Columbus Council Chambers.
In February 2015, to connect more liturgically, a crucifix depicting the Sacrifice of Calvary was
placed in the sanctuary where the Sacrifice of the Mass was offered, and the original Risen
Christ cross was placed near the rear exit of the church as a reminder to go forth to love and
serve the world and one another.
Father Merwyn F. Nuxoll was the
founding pastor and was assisted by
Father Marion Metler, former chaplain
of the old Sacred Heart Hospital who
served until his death in November
1968. While Father Nuxoll was on
leave to study at Catholic University,
Father Joseph M. Gephardt was
appointed vicar substitute until Father
Nuxoll returned in the fall of 1969.
The new parish had an active Altar So-
ciety for the women, a Parish Council
and a CCD Board. The Altar Society
made all the original vestments and
linens, catered wedding receptions for
parishioners, instituted a babysitter training course through the Red Cross, and held an
annual International Dinner to raise funds. In 1968 and ’69, Easter Baskets were provided to
area needy persons.
On Christmas 1969, a thirty voice Midnight Mass choir directed by Carrie Fisher,
accompanied by a brass quartet and organist Jane Bissing, sang a high Mass composed by
Rod Fisher. The service was broadcast on KGVM-FM, as were weekly Masses from Holy
Rosary and Christ the King Churches. Father Douglas H. Riffle became pastor from the fall of
1970 until June 1980. Father Robert F. Grant served from 1980 through June 1986 when
Father William P. Carroll was appointed pastor, serving until 1995.
Early parish picnics were held at Tautphaus Park, then at Sealander Park, and at the Parish
Field south of the Church. The Guitar Music Group first sang at the Parish Picnic Mass in
September 1981. Later, Parish Picnics were held at other locations, namely, Kate Curley Park
and often back at the Parish Field. Christ the King Parish reorganized the Women’s
Community, supported the Knights of Columbus, created an active Christian Service
Committee helping the needy, and instituted a strong religious education program for adults
and children.
In the 1990’s, with the shortage of priests being so prevalent, plans began to combine Christ
the King and Holy Rosary Parishes into one faith community. In 1995, Father Tim O’Toole
was assigned to Idaho Falls to begin the twinning process, serving until 1999. He was
joined in 1998 by Father Marcellus Fernandez who remained until 2000. At that time, Father
William Crowley served as pastor until 2003 and was the last pastor of Christ the King Parish.
In 2003, Father Joseph McDonald III was assigned to Idaho Falls as the sole pastor of the
combined parishes, named the Idaho Falls Catholic Community by the Bishop. By 2005,
Father McDonald had brought the individual Parishes and Missions under one
administrative system. In 2009, Father Raul Covarrubias joined Father McDonald as
co-pastor.
The next year year, Father Jairo Restrepo joined as an additional co-pastor, and Father
McDonald was later reassigned. On July 15, 2011, the Catholic Community of Idaho Falls
became known as Blessed John Paul II Parish. Assisted by Father Jairo Restrepo until 2013,
Father Raul continued ministering to the combined faith community until his retirement in
2019. Masses in both English and Spanish were offered at Christ the King and facilities were
jointly used by parishioners from both churches. On April 27, 2014, upon the canonization of
its patron, the name of the parish was changed to St. John Paul II with the chapels
retaining their original titles of Christ the King and Holy Rosary and its Missions. During
this time, the side altars at Christ the King were modified to
honor Our Lady of Guadalupe and the patron, St. John Paul II.
Over the years the parish of Christ the King and later the parish
of St. John Paul II has been blessed with the presence of many
assistant priests, each adding to the spirit and character of the
parish.
Beginning in 1981, Christ the King began the services of the permanent diaconate with
Charles Solbrig (1981) and later, with Jim Goettsche (1984). Besides these original deacons,
the community of St. John Paul II (both Holy Rosary and Christ the King) have been blessed to
have been served by a community of several dedicated permanent deacons, including:
Dick Kelso (1980), Rick Bonney (1986), Gary Franz
(1993), Alvaro Ponce (2005), Chris Reilly (2005),
Eric Shaber (2005), Wence Rodriguez (2007),
Jason Batalden (2017), Alejandro Conteras (2018)
and Thomas Middleton (2018).
In July 2019, Father Ronald Wekerle was
assigned to serve as the pastor of St. John
Paul II Parish. During the Pandemic of 2020,
the Christ the King property was used in
many creative ways to bring the Catholic
faith community together.
Father Wekerle, along with his pastoral
team of Father German Ruis Rebollo
continued the sacramental life of the
parish with virtual online Masses and
services. Communal Penance Services, and
a Mass and novena for the feast of St. John
Paul II took place safely from cars in the
Christ the King parking lot.
Though time has passed since its beginning in 1966, the spirit of Christ the King continues to
grow in love , faith and service.

La Historia de Cristo Rey 2020
La Parroquia de Cristo Rey comenzó el 16 de agosto de
1966 con un decreto del obispo de Idaho Sylvester Treinen.

consideró en cada detalle. La iglesia, con su amplio techo
en espiral, expresa la resurrección y el reinado supremo de

El padre Merwyn F. Nuxoll fue el pastor fundador y fue asistido por el padre Marion Metler,

En 2003, el Padre Joseph McDonald III fue asignado a Idaho Falls como el único pastor de las
parroquias combinadas, nombrada Comunidad Católica de Idaho Falls por el Obispo. Para
2005, el Padre McDonald había reunido a las Parroquias y Misiones individuales bajo un siste-
ma administrativo. En
2009, el padre Raúl Covarrubias se unió al padre
McDonald como co-párroco . Al año siguiente, el
Padre Jairo Restrepo se incorporó como co-
párroco adicional, y luego el Padre McDonald fue
reasignado. El 15 de julio de 2011, la Comunidad
Católica de Idaho Falls se hizo conocida como
Parroquia del Beato Juan Pablo II. Con la

el nombre de la parroquia fue cambiado a San
Juan Pablo II y las capillas conservaron sus títulos
originales de Cristo Rey y Santo Rosario y sus
Misiones. Durante este tiempo, los altares
laterales de Cristo Rey fueron modificados para honrar a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y al
santo patrón, San Juan Pablo II.
A lo largo de los años, la parroquia de Cristo Rey y más tarde la Parroquia de San Juan Pablo II

En julio de 2019, el padre Ronald Wekerle fue asignado para servir como párroco de la parro-

El Padre Wekerle, junto con su equipo pastoral y con el Padre German Ruis Rebollo,
