Building up to a State Dual team

When arriving on the scene for the 2008-09 wrestling season, Coach Alex Brandenburg had only 12 Lake Mills wrestlers and nine more from neighbor-ing schools, North-wood-Kensett and North Iowa. The first season was very trying for Brandenburg for many reasons. The team was riddled with injuries, especially towards the end of the season, and resulted in not a single wrestler getting through sectionals.

“The first year was very frustrating, because I was used to taking four or five kids to state at Twin River Val-

ley,” said Brandenburg. “To sit and watch districts and state with no one competing, was the low point of my coaching career. I was determined to work harder to make sure that never happened again.” Conditions improved over the next two seasons as LM-NK finished 17-7 in 2010 and 21-4 in 2011. The 2011 team had a very good season, finishing second in the conference, upsetting state dual qualifier, Forest City, and ending the season with 32 wrestlers.

“We had a really good team in 2011, but we struggled at sectionals against much bigger schools,” Brandenburg said. “By this time, most of our squad was from Lake Mills and it made no sense to continue to be in the postseason with schools much bigger than us.” At seasons end, Lake Mills dropped their sharing agreements and went out on their own. In their

first year alone, the Bulldogs finished with a 24-6 record and qualified for the regional duals. They lost to Emmetsburg in the first round of regionals, but the excitement of qualifying, energized the program moving forward. “The first year alone was really fun, because there were some doubting we could do it on our own,” Brandenburg said. “I noticed the crowds were much bigger from that point on. I think it has a lot to do with being purple and gold, and being the Bulldogs again.” The program would build off that success and field a team in

2013, that finished 27-3 and was ranked fourth at the end of the year. “The 2013 team may be the best dual team I have coached at either school,” said Brandenburg. “I think we would have qualified for state duals that year, but we had a huge injury

at the end of the year that derailed those chances.” Due to losses from graduation, a few kids not going out, and early injuries, the 2014 season started off very poorly. When the season started, it did not even look like the team would finish the year with a winning record, but the young group improved rapidly. The team finished the year 19-12, surprised everyone by qualifying for regionals, and sent four wrestlers to Des Moines. Lake Mills continued the late season momentum into the 2015 season and rolled to a 30-5 season and were ranked No.8 in the final poll. Despite the top eight ranking, the Bulldogs were landlocked into heading to either No. 1 Clarion-Goldfield or No. 3 Don Bosco for regional duals. The state chose the latter, and the Dons ended the Bulldogs season for the second straight year. This would set the stage for the 2015-16 season as the Bulldogs once again set a team goal of making it to state duals.

Future of the ProgramWith 20 of 24 wrestlers returning from the 2016 dual state qualifying team, next year’s squad will

hope to take the program even higher. The Bulldogs were able to qualify for state with only one senior available to wrestle at the regional

duals. In fact, the starting line-ups at regional and state duals consisted of five freshman, six sopho-mores, two juniors and one senior.

“With 11 of our 14 starters at the end of the year being underclassmen, it is hard not to be excited about the next few years of Lake Mills wrestling,” said Coach Alex Brandenburg. “This year was really fun qualifying for state duals and having a state champion, and it gives us a confidence factor moving forward.”

The Bulldogs will also get some very good wrestlers back that were injured at the end of the season. Throw into the mix, a talented group of freshmen coming in next year and the Bulldogs have a lot to look forward to. “We cleared a huge hurdle that has eluded us for years by getting to state duals,” Brandenburg said. “I think the window is open the next couple years, to move into the top four teams at state duals. We just need to stay healthier than this year and take the competitiveness of some our individuals to the next level.”

“The strength of the Bulldog is in the pack.”
