A Taste of Watermelon

The boy – he narrates the

story.

The boys’ father,“He was a brave

man,”

The boy had a crush on Willadean and his friends thought that she liked him too. But they never

talked. This was an awkward situation because of her father Mr Wills.

Mr. Wills had raised the biggest watermelon in the country and was guarding his patch with a gun.

Men came from miles around to look at it but Mr. Wills wouldn't let them go into the melon patch. They

had to stand around the edge.

The boy and his friends were talking and he decided to steal Mr Will’s seed melon.

(It was a full moon)

The boys took it back to the creek where they ate the melon. However, it was so big that they had

a food fight with the rest.

The next day, Mr Wills freaked when he found that the melon was gone - he destroyed the rest

of the watermelon crop.

He was saving the melon for his sick wife so she could share it with the community to make her

feel better.

When the boy found out, he felt guilty. He collected some of the seeds and asked his Dad to go with

him to apologise to Mr Wills.

The boy said "I'll help you plant them, Mr. Wills. I'll work very hard.“

To this Mr Wills replied "We can't do anything about this year," he said. "But we'll grow next

year, won't we? We'll grow it together."

He looked past Mr Wills at Willadean, and her eyes were smiling too. He felt his heart give a

great thump in his chest.
