41 STOLPEN CASTLE Apart from medieval dungeons and a torture chamber, also the rooms where Countess Cosel spent her 49-year confinement may be visited.
7 DRESDEN FORTRESS These are the vaults of the old Renaissance fortification where lo-cked-up alchemist Johann Friedrich Boettger had his laboratory and invented the »White Gold« – Europe’s first hard-paste porce-lain.
23 LAUENSTEIN CASTLE Several prison cells and a guard room in this gem of Renaissance architecture still bear witness to 19th century law enforcement.
5 COLDITZ CASTLE In World War II, the castle served as a prison camp for officers of the Allied Forces; today it presents facts and details about their al-most 300 spectacular escape attempts.
30 NOSSEN CASTLE Since the 19th century, the castle has accommodated the judicial offices with dungeons; once a redoubtable brigand was incarcerated in the old Lips Tullian Tower.
Imprisonment has existed since medieval times. Sinister dungeons are bear witness to hard times when revenge and often enough the rulers’ despotism, too, determined jurisdiction. Far into the 18th century, torture served as a means of finding the truth. Come and join in an eerie, but fascinating trip into a dark chapter of history.
