a wonder and of berds

Of th tw nty nine hundred pecieof bird found in outh America, overon third make their home in the Manu

afraid a hunter would seek them out fortheir skins, used to make shoes, belts, and handbags. Caimans as large as 18' inlength attested to the fact they had beensecure for a long time. If the Alto Madrede Dios provided a glimpse of wildlife, the Manu was awe-inspiring. The banksof the river were crowded in comparison. Egrets were everywhere, as weremany other species including Orinocogeese, roseate spoonbills, screamers, wood storks, and the endangered jabirustork.

Eight hours upriver from the mouthof the Manu, we made our landfall.Hiking inland from our beachhead, wewalked through forest in the dark to theedge ofCochaJuarez, an oxbow lake. Atwenty minute paddle in a dugoutcanoe brought us to the jungle lodge ofBoris Gomez, our host for the week wewould spend in Manu. Not then complete, the lodge is the only facility permitted in the park by the Peruviangovernment. It is designed to serve theneeds of field biologists studying thearea's wildlife and to serve a smallnumber of intrepid adventurers seekinga unique experience with wildlife.

The forest around Cocha Juarezabounds with 'monkeys, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and other mammals. Neverhaving been hunted, they are easilyapproached and usually show no fearwhatsoever. The greatest congregationsof life are found around fruiting trees.Large figs provide incredible quantitiesof fruit that attract a menagerie ofspecies. In one tree alone, we observedfour species of monkeys, two species oftoucans, a white headed piping guan, and several smaller birds all at thesame time.

The return to civilization was byanother route. Returning down theManu by canoe, we made camp at asandbar at the river's mouth, to awaitthe arrival of a single engine Cessna aircraft at a jungle dirt landing strip. Wewould be ferried out two or three at atime, enjoying a bird's eye view of theforest during a one-hour flight to PuertoMaldonado, a boomtown on the confluence of the Madre de Dios andTambopata rivers.

What a thrill to see and experiencewhat few human beings have seenbefore and to get a taste of what therainforest must have been like prior tothe Spanish conquest. The people whomake this adventure possible are dedicated to the conservation of this one ofthe last untouched forests in thd worldKnowing them and their dedicationleaves one with a great sense of elan thatthe forest will indeed survive.A54 April/May 1988
