  • ST. MARY CHURCH CHILLICOTHE, OHIO December 20, 2020

    A Word from your Pastor:

Dear Parishioners: God has plans for us, plans that will bring us into His Kingdom. When we allow Him to lead us, we discover that every detail of our lives is part of His Providential preparation of our destiny. At times, we may have an idea that we think will give God room to act. Every time, He turns the tables on us and offers us one better.

King David has the idea of building a Temple, a House for God. It is the culmination of his building up his own earthly kingdom and establishing Jerusalem as his own city and as the capital of his earthly empire. The prophet Nathan, marveling at all that God has done for David, tells him to go ahead. Then God intervenes, telling the prophet to stop David in his tracks. The Temple would be left to Solomon to build. Instead, God will take up David’s idea of building a house and will establish David’s house, that is his family line, as the place where God will dwell.

We have churches that are beautiful places for worship. These were designed to lift our minds and hearts to God, to help us to realize that we are destined for something beyond this world. But more wondrous is the truth that God is with us. Jesus Christ has established His own Temple in us. As we prepare to welcome Him at Christmas, we must ready our hearts to receive Him into our lives more fully. Since so many of our traditions will be lessened due to the circumstance in which we find ourselves, we must be open to discover just how God will turn the tables on us. We can marvel with David that God chooses to share His Kingdom not in a building or an earthly empire, but rather in our own person in relationship to Jesus Christ.

We wish all of you a Blessed Christmas. Be safe. If you are not able to be with us in person on Christmas, know that you are kept in our hearts and in our prayers. Remember to hold onto Christmas all the way to the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord (January 10, 2021), or even to the Feast of the Presentation (February 2) if you are strong enough!

    Rev. Timothy M. Hayes

Pastor of Chillicothe St. Mary, Chillicothe St. Peter and Waverly, St. Mary, Queen of the Missions

All Parish Masses are now open to the public. There is a limited amount of space for people to attend, due to social distancing. You must wear a mask to attend Mass. If you do not have a mask, we can provide you with one. Please enter the church through the North side entrance.

LIVE-STREAMED MASSES: You can find the link to our live-streamed Masses on St. Mary’s Facebook page or St. Mary’s website at: www.stmarychillicothe.com. If you are having trouble finding or viewing the Mass, call the office and we will assist you.

WE NEED YOUR HELP AT MASS We continue to have static on the speakers at church due to people leaving their cell phones on during Mass. Doing so interferes with the microphones at Mass and also with the sound on the live-streamed Mass. Please turn off your cell phones before you come into the church, or leave your cell phone in your car. If you are using your cell phone to follow the Mass on an app, instead please use your individual copy of the Missalette, which you can get when you come into church. Please treat this copy as your own personal copy for the entire church year. It has all the readings and music in it. Please take your copy home with you and bring it back each week.

WE ARE IN NEED OF SERVERS & READERS FOR OUR CHRISTMAS MASSES. We are also working on the new schedule through Palm Sunday. If you or your children wish to serve, please call the parish office 740-772-2061 #5.

PARISH OFFICE HOURS DURING THE HOLIDAYS The Parish Office will be closed December 24 & 31; December 28, 29 & 30 the office will be open from 9 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. As usual, our parish office is closed on Fridays. Normal office hours will resume Monday, January 4, 2021.

OFFERTORY & END OF YEAR DONATIONS It is said that money makes the world go ‘round. It certainly pays the bills! We want to give a huge THANK YOU to all those who mailed their offertory in during the COVID shut down!! We were overwhelmed with gratitude at how many of you stepped up and kept your offertory coming in via the mail or online giving!!! Your support is what enabled us to keep paying the bills of the parish, which did not stop.

You may have noticed by now that our offertory is down for the fiscal year. As of the publication date, we are at 86% of our

budgeted amount. We obviously do not have many of you attending church, due to the pandemic. That’s certainly understandable! If you have not been supporting the church, since COVID-19 started, we ask you to prayerfully look at your situation. If you are able to give your offering, we ask you to either mail it in to church, drop it in the offertory basket when you attend, or consider setting up an online account. If you have been financially affected by this pandemic, we certainly understand if you can’t support St. Mary’s to the extent you have in the past. Unfortunately, our bills don’t stop. For example, each month we pay Bishop Flaget School a subsidy of $10,000.00. We continue to have all our other bills to pay as well. We need your continued support. If you want to drop off an end of year donation in person, please be aware of our modified office hours, listed above.

2021 OFFERTORY ENVELOPES Our 2021 offertory envelopes are in and are ready for distribution. We are distributing them two different ways. If you would like to pick yours up in the parish office, Monday – Thursday 9-4, call (740-772-2061 #6) or e-mail ([email protected]) the parish office and we will add you to our list and leave your box in the parish office. Otherwise, they will be taken to church, and distributed to you when leaving Mass by a parish staff member.

AND THE STAFF OF ST. MARY CHURCH

    WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

    A BLESSED CHRISTMAS SEASON

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS “WE ARE THE HANDS” PROGRAM

This year’s “We Are The Hands” program has taken a little different path. Instead of the usual holiday meals for families, we have made a few changes due to COVID-19. The practice of social distancing has not only changed the way we attend Mass, it has also affected the way St. Vincent de Paul Society does business.

So, here is the challenge….we are asking, after prayerful discernment, you consider making your “We Are The Hands” donation directly to St. Mary’s St. Vincent de Paul Society.

The “We Are The Hands’ program has been a very successful program for a long time. The success is a direct result of the love you have shown for those most in need. In the past, $35 would typically feed a family of 6. This year, the request is the same…..except this year, your Knights of Bishop Flaget Council # 1071, will match the first $1,000.

The program has begun and will end December 27th. Send your donations, payable to St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Mary Church, 61 S. Paint St., and add ”We Are The Hands” to the memo line.

Thank you, Bishop Flaget Knights of Columbus Council #1071

DONATIONS OF CHRISTMAS AND ALL OCCASION CARDS FOR INMATES AT RCI Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, We have heard the term, “these are unprecedented times.” And we all know exactly what that means. The men I serve at RCI are weary as well. No inmate has received visitation with their loved ones since the beginning of March, and there is no end in sight. The most important thing you can do as partners in Christ is to keep our men and staff at RCI in your prayers. Everyday I talk to men who are worried, depressed and fearful of a virus they do not understand and for their families who do not have them to depend on. It’s been difficult in the last several months, but not impossible because of the love of Christ. As the chaplain serving these men, I am asking for prayers. As well, if you would be so inclined, I am needing donations of blank Christmas and all-occasion gift cards. I know that they are cheap at Dollar Tree, and such places. We could use as many as possible! Our men deeply desire to communicate with their loved ones and send greetings throughout the year. Your donation would be greatly appreciated. I wish you a very blessed and healthy holiday season. May this Christmas truly remind us that Immanuel means God is with us. And even in the darkest days, Immanuel – God is with us. If you can send us cards, please send them to: RCI – Attn: Chaplain Anne Pairan, P. O. Box 7010, Chillicothe With deep appreciation for your ministry in Ross County, OH,

    Chaplain Ann R. Pairan, MDiv.

P A R I S H N O T E S During the holiday times, the bulletin often goes to press early. So notes about current events in each parish are hard to prepare. Instead, we offer suggestions for prayers and family activities that can serve to build community in the “Domestic Church,” that is, “the Church Alive in the Home.” Blessing of a Christmas Manger or Nativity Scene In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eve of 1223. The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time. When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another family member. All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: Our help is in the name of the Lord. R/. Who made heaven and earth. One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 2:1-8 or Isaiah 7:10-15, the Birth of Emmanuel. The leader prays with hands joined: God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love. Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. R/. Amen. --From the Catholic Book of Blessings
