Where we Work

IntroductionSt Anne’s was founded in 1971 as a shelter for homeless men in Leeds. From these smallbeginnings St Anne’s has gradually expanded over the years to become the organisation itis today, with over 1500 staff supporting in excess of 5000 clients across the North of England.

Our very first service was shaped around people’s needs and wishes and we havemaintained this ethos, with clients at the centre, throughout all the services we provide.

We are proud to support people with learning disabilities, mental health, substance use andhomelessness issues and to help them achieve their aspirations during their time with us. Westrive to make a difference every day and we have many great examples of this in our 2013Annual Review – we hope you enjoy reading them.

Julie and Alison’s Statement

As we introduce you to this annual report it has been pleasing to reflect onthe many fantastic opportunities that 2013 brought to the organisation.

We commenced new work in Doncaster and Gateshead and this, along withgrowth and development in York, Bradford, Kirklees and Leeds, has resulted in2013 being very successful, both in terms of increasing the number of individualswe support and in employing more people.

That said there is still no doubt that we continue to face many challenges ahead,in particular financially as we continue to feel the impact of funding reductions inthe majority of the services we provide. However it is important that we ensurethat this does not affect the quality of the services which we provide.

There have been many things to celebrate in 2013 and choosing the highlightshas been difficult. The beginning of the year saw recognition for teams andindividuals on a national level at the Great British Care Awards, the Skills for CareAccolades and also locally at a number of other awards.

We appreciate the effort that individuals and teams have put in to ensure that theevents held throughout the year were a success. Dignity Day, which wascelebrated in February across the organisation, gave an excellent opportunity toraise awareness of what dignity means for everyone at St. Anne’s. The Big Eventwas another fantastic and well supported occasion. It was bigger and better thanever and even the sun shone upon us! Client involvement is very much at theheart of St Anne’s and this report has many fantastic examples of this.

The year ended positively with confirmation that we had been successfully re-accredited as an Investors in People Gold organisation. Our Assessor spent agreat deal of time meeting staff and clients across the breadth of the organisationand this quote from his report really sums us up:

“St. Anne’s philosophy of ‘clients at the heart of everythingyou do’ was indeed found to be a living mantra which isstrongly supported by all the managers and their staff teamsand there were numerous examples of this philosophybeing translated into daily staff working practice.”

As we move into 2014 we will again face both new challenges and newopportunities. However with the strength, commitment and compassion of ourstaff behind us we will continue to provide services to our clients in a way thatpromotes their independence and provides opportunity for their development. We believe as a consequence that St Anne’s will continue to grow and prosperin the years ahead.

Dignity Action Day Dignity Action Day (DAD) is an annual opportunity for health and social care workersand members of the public to uphold people’s rights to dignity and provide a trulymemorable day for people who use care and support services.

Dignity Action Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of ensuring peopleare treated as individuals, that they are given choice, control and a sense of purposein their daily lives, and are engaged in stimulating activities.

There were lots of great events across St Anne’s to celebrate. In Leeds GaynorHollis and Vikki Harratt (pictured) worked in partnership with Priesthorpe School inPudsey and held a hugely successful event at the Quakers Meeting Hall in Leeds. There was a real buzz of excitement to the event, which included a dignity tree, tombola and arts & crafts.

At one of our Wetherby homes, a coffee morning was held and the White Rose malevoice Praise choir sang and entertained Clients and visitors.

This is amodel which we hope we will be able to replicate for otherservices in the future and which will give us greater flexibilityand more control over housing issues than with a supportonly model.

Andy Booth, Huddersfield Town’s Club Ambassador, officially opened Kingsmill Court in July. Andy said, “Thisnew supported housing development is a fantasticfacility, especially as it houses people from the localarea. I was honoured to be part of the official openingceremony and it was great to meet the clients on theday, many of whom were really knowledgeable aboutHuddersfield Town”.
