Question 2How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Page 2: A2 question 2

My main media product, the music video, is a combination of shots that include objects (props such as a scrabble board, phone, love heart sweets, wine and especially Barbie’s) as well as a masked character. The main idea is that of the Barbie’s as their image is of a pretty girl but this also was a good way to mask the artist’s anonymity. The artist not featuring in the video is not a common theme, but some artist’s prefer to not feature in them e.g. Ed Sheeran sometimes is only in a bit of his videos (A Team, Lego House) and Sia regularly has dancing performances in hers and her image is anonymous (Chandelier).

In order to portray my artist’s anonymity effectively I had to continue this theme across my music video and digipak & advertisement. The main way I did this was to have the Barbie’s as a focal point of all products. In my music video there are many shots of Barbie’s throughout which is why I chose to have a Barbie feature on the front cover of my digipak and poster.

By seeing the advertising first, the audience will be expecting something from the video; continuity, that makes them recognise it is the same artist as they believed. My video does resemble the digipak and poster because of the colour scheme, images, font and the overall ’vibe’ or ‘aura’ of all of the products. These reasons make the combination of my main media product and ancillary texts effective.

Colour scheme

The main colour in my media video is red – a colour that has connotations of love and lust. It features on the letters ‘Call Me’, lips, balloon etc. For this reason I felt it was appropriate to continue using this as a main colour on my ancillary tasks.

In my music video I also used various other colours including black, white and more ‘pop’ colours like pink, blue etc. I used black and white usually as the font which is why the background for my digipak and poster is white and the text is in black.

The purpose of the colourful lines on the ancillary tasks is that it links to the era in which this track was initially released (1980’s) especially in pop music which was rather eccentric. Also, this splash of colour intrigues the audience which is especially important on the ancillary texts because it is the initial look that makes them have a greater interest in the artist and music. This differs to a music video because it is available on public platforms such as YouTube so the advertising to watch this is done by the ad and digipak packaging.

Typography

The typography I used across my media products is the same. I used the Brush Script MT font in my music video to write Call Me in sync with the

beat and also used it to introduce the artist Babie in my video, on my digipak and the advertisement. This makes my unique artist and album more distinguishable. I initially chose to do this because the font resembled that of Barbie and my artist name was similar as well as the link to the Barbie’s in the video.

The benefit of this is that when the audience sees it they will recognise the artist and album so it will catch their eye more and make them more interested in the product; more

so than if the font was the common Arial font that people are so accustomed to and take no interest into.

Vibe

I think the most important link between my media products is the feeling they give off to the audience. What I mean by this is that my video is peculiar and doesn’t portray a clear narrative or message to the audience and this is also the same for my ancillary tasks.

For example, the whole premise of having a distorted Barbie on the front of my digipak, with her eyes blanked out is strange and so is the order of videos in my video. The video is relevant because of the link to the lyrics and other ideas I have explained in Question 1, but it may still be viewed as confusing and so is the ancillary tasks. However, this is intriguing because it will make the audience want to watch the video again or talk about it with their peers which will overall act as further advertisement for the artist and album.

My media products are different to other pop products you will see and the idea of this is enticing because people like to understand something that is not exactly clear to behold at first.
