“AC DC”, ANLS Grand Champion Stallion
Hello AAA Members - With a very successful ANLS and a wonderful 2012 Awards Banquet, 2013 has just begun and AAA has already had a very busy year! Thank you to all those who came out to Westworld and braved the freezing weather for our show and Banquet. We made a lot of new friends, most of whom were from out of state. They came from California, New Mexico, Colorado & Texas to join our show. We even met local Az appaloosa owners who have never been out to see our shows before. So nice to see new faces and fans in the stands cheering our "spots" on. Because of the chilly weather, the Annual General Membership meeting was shortened this year and I didn't get a chance to thank you for voting me in as your new AAA President. I am so excited about what the next few years will hold for our members and the anticipated growth we should have. I also want to welcome our new Officers, BOD members and alternates and thank the outgoing members for their service. Our next BOD meeting will be March 7th at Carlos O' Briens in Scottsdale. Please feel free to join us, help with planning our year and be part of this wonderful clubs future. We want to have a club that works for everyone with the preservation of our wonderful Appaloosa horse and mind, so please let us know what you want and we will try to make it happen. There are plenty of committee seats available and we welcome any newcomers to these meetings. The show committee has quickly tried to fill in our 2013 show schedule. Our next two shows have been booked so mark your calendars for a single judged ApHC show on April 14th at the Western Saddle Club and triple judge ApHC & All Breed show August 3 & 4 at Coconino Fairgrounds in Flagstaff. The trail committee is busy planning our next amazing trail ride and has a great upcoming event in store for you! As always, keep a look out for all our upcoming events on Facebook and our website www.arizonaappaloosa.com Kelly Potter, AAA President

The ApHC offers NonThe ApHC offers Non--Pro Walk / TrotPro Walk / Trot
“ Beyond Imagination” & Kraig Broadbent “Chromeplated Dream” & Shannon Wilson
The ApHC initiated Non-Pro Walk / Trot classes in
2012 which has been a blessing for those new to riding in
the show ring or starting a horse.
So what is a Non-Pro Walk / Trot class? This class is
for all amateur horsemen and women known as non-
professionals (Non-Pro) 19 years and older. A Non-Pro (NP)
rider must have a Non-Pro card from the ApHC. A Non-Pro
cannot be defined as a professional trainer or exhibitor.
Additional details on the Non-Pro requirement can be found
in the ApHC handbook. Previously, the ApHC offered riding
classes that required all three gaits. For those riders that are
just starting a horse or just starting to ride, the Walk / Trot
class is for you.
Let’s face it, showing horses is not easy work. The
amount of time required to train a horse, to learn to ride
and prepare a horse for a show amounts to a significant time
in the saddle and on the ground. Amateurs that train their
own horses may want to show their horses before their
horses are proficient at a lope/canter. In addition, some
horses deal with the hubbub of the show setting easily,
other horses take time to get used to all the excitement. For
horses that need time to adjust to this new environment,
the Non-Pro Walk / Trot classes are perfect. Walk / Trot
classes are available in Trail, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter
Under Saddle, Western Horsemanship, Western Pleasure,
Nez Perce Stakes Race, Keyhole and Camas Prairie Stump
race. In addition to the NP Walk / Trot classes, exhibitors
may also show their horse in Showmanship, Halter, Hunter
In Hand, Heritage, Yearling Longe Line and Pleasure Driving.
The Walk / Trot classes are a great way for riders to
participate when they do not feel comfortable loping or
cantering their horse.
The Walk / Trot exhibitors picture here are Kraig
Broadbent and Shannon Wilson riding at the Arizona National
Livestock Show. Kraig is riding a World Top Ten Appaloosa
Games Horse Association (AGHA) horse “Beyond Imagination”
known as “Pongo”. As Pongo’s primary job is running events,
Kraig gamely accepted the challenge of riding his speedy horse
in multiple pleasure and equitation events and did a fabulous
job. Pongo did not break gait once as he carried Kraig faithfully
through all the competition events.
Shannon is riding “Chromeplated Dream”, a.k.a.
“Harley” for the first time at a show. While Harley has had
show experience in halter, Shannon has never shown him in
riding classes. Harley was broke to ride and herd cattle on
ranches. A significant change from his initial job, Harley and
Shannon also did a fabulous job at their first riding show.
The AAA congratulates both Kraig and Shannon on
their terrific accomplishments.

Appaloosas in EnduranceAppaloosas in Endurance
The sport of Endurance is an exhilarating event that challenges the
competency of the rider and the stamina of the horse. Endurance riding begins far
before the day of the given event. It requires months of preparation by the rider
to ensure their horse is conditioned and prepared for the race.
Arizona Appaloosa Association members Sandy McNatt and Sonja Berry
entered Appaloosas in the January 5th 2013 Lead, Follow or Get Out of My Way
ride at Bumble Bee Ranch in Arizona. The pair entered the 25 limited distance
ride. The ride required the horses pass an initial veterinarian exam by 5:30 pm
the day before. After completing the vet exams, the horses were stabled at the ranch and Sonja and Sandy were treated to a
fine dinner provided by the ride sponsors in a charming western themed pavilion at the ranch. The sponsors explained the trail
letting the riders know what they could expect. Being January, the overnight temperature was about 25 degrees. After making
sure their horses were blanketed and prepared for the night, Sonja and Sandy hit the sack. The ride started at 7:30 am the next
morning. The start was a little slow while a tack problem was resolved, then the team hit the road trotting up the mountain trail.
The ride was technically challenging as it contained numerous switch backs up and down the mountain with an overall elevation
change of about 3,000 feet. Sandy rode “Broker’s BlueEyed Kid”, a daughter of The Spot Broker, while Sonja rode an Appaloosa
mare with unknown parentage. This was Sandy’s first endurance ride and Sonja’s
fourth. It was chilly to start but as the sun cleared the mountains, the
temperatures soon warmed up to beautiful riding weather. The view was
gorgeous and the riding was an incredible rush. While the pair completed the ride
with both horses in great shape, they were over the allocated time due to
concerns of pushing the horses too fast on some of the very challenging terrain.
Regardless, given the challenging technicality of the ride, Sonja and Sandy enjoyed
the day and plan to continue competing in the sport of Endurance.
