Jim Boult is chief executive of Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL), New Zealand’s second largest airport. Since his appointment to the role in February 2009, CIAL has recorded many notable achievements, including record passenger numbers, record profi tability, construction of a new integrated terminal, numerous and substantial property developments and attracting CIAL’s fi rst new long-haul carrier in 21 years.

Those achievements were all achieved alongside coping with the immediate after-effects of two devastating earthquakes, with minimal disruption to the business. Perhaps it’s not surprising then, that CIAL has also received numerous awards recognising excellence in multiple facets of its business.

Mr Boult has had a long and successful career in a number of business fi elds and is a past director and deputy chairman of the New Zealand Tourism Board, and a past director of the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association. He was awarded Airport Personality of the Year by the NZ Airports Association in 2010 and made a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management in 2011. He is also a recipient of the Queenstown Lakes District Council Heart of the Community award. But life is not all business for this

man. He has also undertaken a number of senior community, charity and sporting-based roles and keenly follows and enjoys various sports. His leisure activities include jogging, reading, fi shing and motor racing.

Jim Boult will be the guest speaker at the Ashburton District Business Awards Ceremony on Friday October 7, giving an address about leadership. He will share his perspective on the role he and his team have played in business and community leadership in recent months, through earthquakes, snow storms and volcanic ash challenges.

Congratulations to all those who have entered this year’s ABA / Ashburton Guardian Ashburton District Business Awards.

I was delighted to see the record number of nominations received from the public for the three categories which make up our Peoples’ Choice Awards section – Café of the Year, Top Shop and Customer Service Person of the Year and I know the results will be keenly awaited.

All of our Peoples’ Choice nominees should feel extremely proud that members of the public have taken the time to acknowledge them in this way.

The other section of our Business Awards is just as exciting, with an increased number of entries this year from businesses that have gone to a lot of trouble to submit entries for Small Business, Medium / Large Business, New Business, New Business Manager, Rural Service Business, Clean Green Business and Customer Service Business of the Year. It is particularly encouraging to see

the high calibre of business taking part and I believe this reinforces the standing that the annual Ashburton District Business Awards has in the community.

The aim of the Ashburton District Business Awards is to foster and recognise the talent and innovation that exists within our District’s business community and this has most defi nitely been achieved.
