FREE! Irrigation and Landscape AssessmentsThe Abbotsford Mission Water & Sewer Commission (AMWSC) is offering free assessments
to residents interested in irrigating efficiently. This is a one-on-one walk-through of your yard
and garden that takes about 45 minutes. An AMWSC staff member will help you identify ways
that you can save water. Irrigation experts estimate homeowners can reduce outdoor watering
needs by 25% just by keeping up with irrigation system maintenance and setting the timer
properly. By converting your yard to a waterwise landscape you can save water, time and
money.
Water Use & Landscape SurveyThe AMWSC would like to have a better understanding of how water conservation regulations
impact residents and is conducting a confidential residential survey to help evaluate the
effectiveness of current support programs as well as assist with the development of future
conservation programs and incentives. Survey participants will be entered to win a rain barrel or
a $100 gift certificate to a local nursery. To participate in the water conservation survey, please

Worldwide adventureKatie Powell and
Evan Hunken recently returned from the trip
around the worldAshley WRAYAbbotsford News
Hiking up a steep mountain, through thick African jungle and over makeshift wooden bridges is an experience that Katie Powell, 22, and her boyfriend Evan Hunken, 24, will never forget.
They were in Uganda searching for gorillas with a team of two tour guides and a pair of trackers wielding guns. It took another tour group only 15 minutes to find the creatures. It took Powell and Hunken four hours.
Finally, they came across a family of 26 goril-las nestled in the thick bush. They were able to spot 13, including a few protective silver-backs (males) and a baby.
“It was the most difficult thing we did on the trip, but definitely the most rewarding,” said Powell.
The trek was part of the Get Rid of Me competition staged by U.K.-based travel company On The Go Tours.
Last year, the pair entered the contest as Team Kevan, combin-ing their names.
Over four months they garnered more than 35,000 online votes.
In October they found out they had won the $100,000, six-month, 18-coun-try world tour for two, including flights, tours, vaccinations, insurance and spending money.
They left on Jan. 19, receiving their itinerary only four days before departing.
Since then, the Abbotsford couple visited India, Morocco, Jordan, Nepal, Turkey, China and Egypt, among others, joining a set tour in each country.
Their 57-day camping adventure in Africa, where they trekked through 10 countries, was a definite highlight.
There they saw lions, giraffes and elephants, wore three layers of pants each night to battle the cold, made lunches on the side of the road, and ate crocodile, camel and ox testicles.
Following Africa, they were treated to a sur-prise sailing tour of the Croatian coast.
And in Egypt, they were part of modern his-tory, arriving in the country during the revolu-tion. While they were safely tucked away at a resort during the height of the protests and
Katie Powell and Evan Hunken have memories and photos from across the globe. Above they are in Cairo, Egypt, and below at the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

NO CHARGES IN PEDESTRIAN
DEATHAn Abbotsford Police investigation into a fatal pedestrian collision involving a Surrey RCMP officer has concluded with regional Crown counsel declining to lay charges against the driver. An 18-year-old girl was struck and killed Jan. 31 by an RCMP patrol vehicle on King George Boulevard near 98 Avenue. The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) took over the investigation and presented a report to Crown counsel that included an examination of the physical evidence, witness statements and a reconstruction of the events. Crown counsel notified the APD on July 27 that there was insufficient evidence to proceed with charges against the officer.
CAT BURGLAR PLEADS GUILTY
A teen accused of three cat burglaries in Abbotsford last month has pleaded guilty to one of them. Brian Clayton Kopeck, 18, is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 17 in Abbotsford provincial court. He was charged after a series of burglaries had taken place in early July in which the thief entered residences through sliding glass doors while the occupants were sleeping. Jewelry, cash and electronics were stolen.

Citizen FergusonIn June, when he was recog-
nized as one of the seven Order of Abbotsford winners, former Mayor George Ferguson was also chosen by city council as Abbotsford’s Citizen of the Year.
“I am appreciative and very humbled,” said Ferguson. “It was a great group of people. Any one of them could have won.”
Ferguson, who was called a politi-cal icon by current Mayor George Peary, began his career in local politics in 1969. He served until 2008, missing only three years from 2002-2005, when he was defeated in an election for the first and only time.
In a political career that spanned close to 40 years, only one term – his first – was as councillor. He was a key player in seeing the neighbouring municipalities of Abbotsford, Sumas and Matsqui amalgamated into one city.
Ferguson said he is still inter-ested in politics, and keeps up with local affairs.
“I miss it to some degree,” he said. “It’s still interesting, and poli-tics has a bearing on everybody, every day.”
He worked with Peary on council for many years, and gives the cur-rent mayor his endorsement.
“I think George Peary is doing an excellent job, and I hope he’ll be re-elected,” he said.
In addition to his work in local politics, Ferguson also served as the president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM), and as a soldier during the Second World War.
In announcing the award, the city noted “The Citizen of the Year award recognizes an individual contribution by a citizen who has served with the greatest distinction and excelled in fields of endeavour benefiting the residents of the City of Abbotsford.”
Since he passed on the political torch, he’s been no less busy, he says.
“People ask me what I’m doing in retirement – I still haven’t found it yet,” said Ferguson on a sunny afternoon, just before getting onto his riding lawn mower for a three-and-a-half-hour job.
“As long as you live on a farm, there’s always something to do.”
Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News
A man who was investigated in Abbotsford a decade ago for possible child pornography offences had 23 com-puters and 31 hard drives seized from his home last week.
Const. Ian MacDonald said it could take up to a year for the Abbotsford Police Department’s tech crime inves-tigator to look through all the data and determine what kinds of images and/or videos it contains.
Because charges cannot be laid until the investigation concludes, the man, who is in his late 60s, has not been named.
MacDonald said the suspect has pre-viously been convicted of sex charges in the Lower Mainland and the U.S., al-though he did not have the specifics.
He said he could not reveal in which area of Abbotsford the man lives, other than in “a typical residential commu-nity.”
MacDonald said police are holding back specifics about the man’s identity because they don’t want members of the public to take vigilante action.
“It’s important for us to let people know (that he’s out there) ... but we do not have suf-ficient evidence at this time to lay a charge.”
MacDonald said he first encoun-tered the suspect 10 to 12 years ago, when the man was investigated for child pornogra-phy offences.
MacDonald, who was a patrol officer at the time, was in the man’s home and saw several comput-er monitors and video cameras, includ-ing ones facing the bed.
“It was one of the most creepy things I’ve ever seen,” he said.
The man has lived in Abbotsford for several years, but left for a period in the early 2000s before returning.
He was brought to police attention again recently by law enforcement of-ficials elsewhere who traced a computer
that had accessed or sent child porn.
Those officials then alerted the Abbotsford Police D e p a r t m e n t , which obtained warrants to search the ad-dress of the traced computer. Those warrants
were executed on July 27 and 29.MacDonald said police will continue to
monitor the suspect while the investiga-tion continues.
“This individual will not fall off our radar,” he said.
Former mayor George Ferguson, Abbotsford’s Citizen of the Year, now spends time working on his farm.

Rash of thefts from vehicles
Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News
Abbotsford Police are reporting a spike in thefts from vehicles, and the culprits are scoring some better-than-usual goods.
Const. Ian MacDonald said the thieves are making off with items such as laptop computers, purses, iPhones and iPads. They’re lifting them from locked and unlocked vehi-cles.
“What people are lea-ving in their cars right now is unbelievable,” MacDonald said.
Police recorded 23 such
incidents during the week of July 24 to 31.
During the previous week, 11 thefts from vehicles were reported, but MacDonald said the items stolen were of les-ser value, such as loose change and cellphone chargers.
Thefts have occur-red in various parts of Abbotsford and are not limited to one specific area.
MacDonald said police are at a loss to explain why more people seem to be leaving expensive items in plain view.
Jared Berndt, 15, coaxed Sammy, his three-year-old Sheltie, to jump into Walmsley Lake at Albert Dyck Park. The pair were cooling off on Thursday morning. The north side of the park has areas for dogs to swim. There is also a 1.6 km walking loop around the lake.

Memories of a lifetimeriots, they still witnessed the relief and joy of the outcome.
They both agree the most adrenaline-pump-ing experience was bungee jumping over the Nile, where they also went whitewater rafting.
One of the most surprising moments was when Powell presented Hunken with cards for his 24th birthday from friends and family that she had hidden in her bag for over four months.
And for their two-year anniversary, when the couple was staying in a hut on the Mongolian desert, “in the middle of nowhere,” Hunken arranged for their tour guide to arrive on a camel with roses for Powell.
Throughout the trip, the couple kept a blog equipped with a journal, pictures and videos to share their experiences with friends and family.
“We have photos, videos, and memories that will last a lifetime,” said Powell.
Sorting through the pictures in their home on Wednesday – two days after their return – they were pleasantly reminded about memo-ries that had been pushed aside to make new ones.
To ensure they don’t forget about their jour-ney, they’ve already started decorating their home with items from their trip, including African pillows, a Russian doll, clay elephants from India and a prayer wheel from Nepal.
The couple is extremely thankful for the votes and support they received to allow them to take the trip.
“We’ve met amazing people, experienced different cultures and learned more about the world,” said Powell.
“We’ve tasted it, seen it and experienced it.”For Hunken, it’s the life experience, educa-
tion and friends that made the 27 flights, camel rides, donkey treks and tuk-tuk (motor-cycle) journeys worth it.

The HST:What’s in the
cards?
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
LAST WEEK, WE ASKED:
Did you find the HST referendum question or
voting process confusing?
Do you support Victoria’s endorsement of Metro’s waste incineration plan?
To answer, go to abbynews.com
149 RESPONDED:
One day, there will be quiet in the fields
Eventually, they will be silenced.I mean, they have to be.The concept is just too absurd to
carry on in this contemporary, environ-mentally aware, care-about-your-fellow-man world.
Think about it. You plant a crop in a big, open fi eld. The crop attracts birds. The birds eat some of the crop.
Solution?Create a device that generates an
extremely loud explosion.Place several of these devices around
the fi elds, and set them to go off every few minutes, all day long.
An agricultural war zone, at farm after farm.
Ridiculous!Yet, there they are – the blueberry
cannons – booming and banging away throughout the Valley, for weeks upon endless weeks.
Woe betide the poor souls who live near these artillery ranges.
The daily barrage on the Sumas fl atlands can even be heard from the McMillan hillsides.
Boom! Bang! Boom!Shot after shot, from dawn till dusk. It’s noise pollution that wouldn’t be
tolerated in virtually any other setting. But because it’s deemed ‘necessary’ for agricultural purposes, it’s justifi ed.
Ultimately, it won’t be.It’s a crude, bad practice. Effective,
perhaps, but immensely invasive. The widespread use of toxic pesti-
cides and herbicides was once taken for granted, accepted as practical and necessary.
Eventually, however, attitudes changed.
Noise pollution from blueberry can-nons isn’t the same as environmental pollution and human health concerns, although in respect to the latter, there is relevance. Noise does pose health issues.
Regardless, the principle of develop-ing a more harmonious relationship with the natural world, and a height-ened agricultural “conscience” does
apply here. We’ve learned how to deal with bugs
without hitting them with a chemical sledgehammer.
Timber companies were once political powerhouses that could and did exhibit a “who cares” attitude about their impact on the environment. Yet, over
time, public pressure brought about forestry regulations and practices that no longer leave barren wastelands and damaged watersheds.
The agriculture industry is also an economic strongman, unchallenged by governments reluctant to change archaic “Right to Farm” legislation.
But farmers can and will learn to live with birds without using howitzers.
Viable alternatives already exist – andare being used by some growers – from the venerable scarecrows, to nets, streamers, fl ashers, natural predators, silhouettes and models, balloons, refl ec-tive windmills, and high-frequency devices.
Bright minds are working on other high-tech gadgetry, such as lasers, that can protect blueberry crops without auditory savagery.
I don’t envision or advocate an outright, overnight ban on the use of cannons. A gradual phase-out is more reasonable, weaning growers off the devices in stages.
It could start with a moratorium on any new cannons, moving to increas-ing restrictions on frequency, size of acreages where they can be used, and proximity to neighbourhoods.
After all, if residential development is allowed to expand up to and around agricultural land, governments have a responsibility to address the issues cre-ated by this contact zone.
And please don’t say, “If you don’t likeit, leave.” That argument is as crude as the cannons.
One day, there will be silence.

Yes, the HST implementation was most certainly screwed up, but lets not throw out a positive taxation change on that basis. The HST, compared to the archaic dual sales tax system we had in place, is good for small business, good for Abbotsford’s farmers and good for BC.
Farm 2
There’s no mess to “sort out”. Bad tax, too expen-sive, poorly implemented. It’s unacceptable. Period!
Fix it by making it fair to the taxpayers, equivalent exemptions as the PST, and make it truly revenue neutral instead of lying about it.
Retiredinabby
The rich get a pass as they always do and what’s left of the middle class will now have the government and low income earners (whatever their excuse is) fi rmly planted in our back pockets.
Everyone that does not qualify for the (free HST cheque/bribe) are the ones subsidizing it.

Reply on smart meters
Write, and protect our air
Re: Green Party gets lost in the static (B.C. Views, Aug. 3).
Tom Fletcher is correct. The 2009 BC Greens platform had a timeline that included smart metering by 2012. We did not recommend wire-less meters because, as Fletcher mentioned, we have precautionary policy on EMF radiation.
Our policy was revised in 2010. The initiatives we wanted implemented prior to new meters – feed-in tariffs, time-of-day pricing and regional management boards – were not in progress at the end of 2009 so that the timeline for smart metering was eliminated.
Without being tied to substantial energy con-servation, BC Hydro’s smart meter program is simply a different and more expensive way to collect data. A billion dollars invested in con-servation and energy retrofits, diversifying to renewable energy or any number of priorities should precede changing meters.
Fletcher may dismiss health concerns as-
sociated with Wi-Fi but people have a right to feel safe and healthy in their own homes. Those who chose not to use wireless technology should not be forced to do so.
As I said at the news conference, wireless smart meters are a technological solution look-ing for a problem. With shrewd marketing, the companies that developed wireless smart meters have become wealthy with sole-source contracts from government after government. At some point, given deficits and debt load, we will need to reverse the decision-making pro-cess so that long-term plans actually precede implementation of new technology.
Other jurisdictions are putting moratoriums on or cancelling the installation of smart me-ters. We are recommending BC Hydro listen to valid privacy, security and health concerns and change course.
Jane Sterk, LeaderGreen Party of B.C.

A sincere thanks to Patricia Ross and the rest of council for their efforts to protect our most essential resource, the air that we breathe.
Within the last year I have acquired a very nasty allergy to a substance in the air that affects my eyes. When I asked
an eye specialist as to why this has happened, he responded, “You live in the Valley, don’t you?”
It seems to be an acceptable fact that the Valley air is pol-luted and no one cares. We all must take Ross’s suggestion to write to those in control to
express our deepest concerns regarding air quality.
It is our responsibility to stand up for our rights or our council’s efforts are in vain. Show your support for council let them know they are appre-ciated.

Mayor should show backbone
I don’t know what infuriates me more: Metro’sdetermination to build toxin-spewing garbageincinerators despite the fact that Valley residentsare already choking on Vancouver’s smog, orMayor George Peary’s consistently timorous andingratiating “now let’s be civil y’all” attitude.
Or, the Liberal government hypocriticallyallowing veterinarian-turned-EnvironmentMinister Terry Lake to green light this project, despite making a commitment to the residentsof the Fraser Valley to help us improve our airquality.
A recent study showed that 57 per cent ofthe pollutants in the Valley are blown in fromVancouver. We live in one of the most fragileairsheds in the world. Metro’s own expert, Prof.Douw Steyn, a UBC scientist and air pollutionmeteorologist, has claimed it would be “a scan-dalously stupid thing for Metro Vancouver poli-ticians to even consider building incinerators inthis airshed.” He went on to say that “Garbage isnot a fuel and to say it is a green energy source isstretching credibility to breaking. If you inciner-ate anything you end up treating the atmospherelike a sewer.” Not surprisingly, Metro Vancouverhas since cut off funding supporting for histeam’s research into ozone levels in the Valley.
Metro routinely fluffs off research that pointstowards the dangers of burning garbage in thisairshed, choosing instead to compare us to citiesin Europe that have this technology – areasthat are very different topographically from us.
My message to Mayor George Peary is: Get abackbone. Stating that your “personal prefer-ence would be not to have incinerators... but thatthe dialogue should remain civil” is miserablyinadequate. You were elected to champion what’sbest for the residents of Abbotsford, a job thatyou’re clearly not up to.

Repair work on the Sumas Way overpass to Highway One is well underway. Northbound Sumas Way traffic is down to one lane, and overwidth trucks are not permitted. The structure was damaged when a semi truck with an oversized load struck it on June 7. Damage was estimated at $300,000.

Guilty of drug and weapons charges
Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News
A Supreme Court judge has found an Abbotsford man guilty of five drug and weap-ons charges.
Jason Warrick Purchase, 37, was convicted July 27 in Chilliwack Supreme Court of posses-sion for the purpose of trafficking, careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm without registration, and two counts of improper stor-age of a firearm.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 7.Purchase and six other occupants of a home
on Sumas Mountain Road were arrested May 9, 2007 after police responded to a 911 call.
According to court documents, the caller said
her brother had contacted her and said he wasbeing threatened by someone with a gun at theproperty.
When police arrived at the scene, Purchasecame out of the house first, and the other sixexited after police issued a “call out.”
A search of the residence then turned upboxes of ammunition, a handgun, 11 improp-erly stored rifles, and marijuana plants thatwere being grown and harvested.
A police officer testified during Purchase’strial that the home had been in the midst of amarijuana harvest – called a “clipping party” –in which individuals are hired to separate thebud from the rest of the plant.
The guns and ammunition were found inplain view in various places around the house.

Distant fires threaten
air qualityJeff NAGELBlack Press
Air quality warnings issued by Metro Vancouver are increasingly due to out-of-region wildfires rather than local pollution, according to a new report.
Two air quality advisories issued last year in August lasted a combined total of seven days and both resulted from smoke wafting here from distant fires, noted Metro’s report on air quality in 2010. That fits a trend of the “increasing influence of wildfire particulate” triggering warnings here, it said.
Historically, it has been ground-level ozone, not fires, that has degraded air quality in the summer and sparked advisories.
Particulate levels stayed within a Canada-wide standard, but exceeded Metro Vancouver’s own more stringent target maximum at times during last August.
Metro runs 26 monitoring stations across the Lower Mainland to track air conditions and de-termine when public warnings are needed.
Ozone levels stayed within both the Canada-wide standard and the Metro target at all times last year. That’s an improvement because ozone had exceeded the Metro target at least once in each of the previous nine years.
Over the past two decades, the report said, detected levels of most major air pollutants have fallen.
It says emissions of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide have been reduced – despite continued population growth in the Lower Mainland – through better vehicle emission standards and the AirCare program, while lower levels of sulphur in vehicle fuels have cut sulphur dioxide levels.
The shutdown of several refineries and low-ered emissions from cement factories also cut sulphur dioxide levels.
While peak and average levels of carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide have continued to decline in recent years, sulphur dioxide and particulate levels have been relatively flat.
Cutting ozone is a challenge because it forms when volatile organic compounds – often from vegetation, including farms – react with nitro-gen oxides on hot sunny days.
Peak ozone levels are down from the 1980s and early 1990s, but average levels have risen slightly.
The report cautions levels of pollutants can deviate from depending on local conditions.
A two-year study led by UBC researchers aims to determine more ways to cut ozone.
Metro is also aiming to reduce particulate from off-road diesel machinery.
The region is imposing new fees on exca-vators, loaders and similar equipment with heavily polluting older engines to put financial pressure on their owners to clean up.

Saturday at Clearbrook Elementary (3614 Clearbrook Rd.) from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. They may also be dropped off anytime at the recycling depot at 750 Riverside Rd., where there is an
account called Ayn’s Freedom Fund. Info: [email protected]

NEWSPAPER RETRACTION FOR THE BEST BUY JULY 29 CORPORATE FLYER - Please note that the incorrect brand logo was advertised for the TomTom VIA 140STM (Web Code: 10167284) and GO 250STM (Web Code: 10157244) GPS navigators found on page 21 of the July 29 flyer. These are TomTom products, NOT Garmin, as previously advertised. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our valued customers.
1. “My good friend (or husband) tried to do it.” My apologies to the guys reading this, but it’s true. A big part of our business is fi nishing up the electrical projects you start . . . from outlets to ceiling fans. And that’s okay, although it would be easier and probably cheaper if you’d call us fi rst. We have the tools, experience and know-how to do the job right, start to fi nish. Call us for proven professional electrical expertise.
2. “I need a ceiling fan or chandelier installed.” We install lighting fi xtures, fans, outlets, dimmers and more. Our work is guaranteed to meet city codes, and we use only copper wiring (no aluminum). Want to know why we use only copper wiring? Call us.
3. “I have a breaker that doesn’t stay reset.” If your breaker keeps tripping, you don’t have the equivalent of a fl ooded basement, yet. But, you do have a potentially dangerous problem involving the electrical circuits in your home. Don’t ignore it. Call us!
4. “I’ve got an ugly internet or cable TV wiring stapled to my baseboards.” Let us do the job right. Snaking wire through walls is an art, a science, a skill . . . and our specialty. It’s also something few electricians, cable companies or internet providers like to do. But you’re in luck when you call us. We’re World Champions at snaking wire without knocking holes in your walls.
5. “Smells like something’s burning” Overheated appliances and electrical circuits are a problem you don’t want to ignore. A call to us now could save you a call to 911 later.
6. “We’ve got a ‘mystery switch’.” We love getting this call. If you’ve got a switch that you’ve never been able to link to an outlet or circuit, call us to solve the mystery.
How to choose the Right Electricianif you have any of these 6 problems and you want them fi xed today!
Unlike the plumbers I know, electricians rarely get emergency calls. Our equivalent of a fl ood in the basement is a fi re in the attic . . . and you don’t call us for that. You call 911.So you’re probably not reading this because you’ve got an electrical emergency. Instead, you have an electrical problem like one of these . . .

2986
BC Hydro continues to construct a new, underground duct bank along Downes Road. This work is resulting in temporary traffic delays, so motorists are encouraged to detour north to Townshipline Road to avoid the construction zone.
Crews are on site from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
The majority of this work will result in single-lane, alternating traffic. However, the installation of three culverts will require a three-day, full road closure to non-residents and non-emergency vehicles. This road closure will occur August 15–17, 2011 between Ross Road and Bradner Road.
BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience this construction may cause and we thank you for your patience and understanding.
For 50 years, BC Hydro has been providing clean, reliable electricity to our customers. Today we are planning for the next 50 years by investing in new projects, upgrading existing facilities and working with our customers to conserve energy through Power Smart.

Cascades fall to NCAA foeDan KINVIGAbbotsford News
An upset victory wasn’t in the cards for the University of the Fraser Valley wom-en’s basketball team on Wednesday eve-ning, as they fell 77-59 to the University of Mississippi Rebels.
But along the way, the Cascades earned a great deal of re-spect from the visit-ing NCAA Division I squad.
UFV came out on fire, racing out to an early 10-2 lead, and led 21-10
after the first quarter. But the Rebels cranked up the defensive inten-sity at that point, and their effective full-court pressure and supe-rior size in the post paved the way to victory.
“ T h a t game was p r o b a b l y the most p h y s i c a l game I’ve ever been involved in,” Rebels coach Renee Ladner marveled af-terward. “Their team is very fundamentally
sound, and I think we were a bit surprised by their physicality.
“They literally popped us in the
mouth to start the game, and we
stepped back. Once we got
adjusted and figured out they (the r e f e r e e s ) were going
t o let us play this way, I thought our kids stepped up.”
Wednesday’s game marked the beginning of a series of games
against NCAA op-ponents at UFV. The Cascades women have a rematch against the Rebels tonight (Friday), and host the University of Louisville on Aug. 14.
The UFV men’s hoopsters host the University of Texas-Arlington on Aug. 22, Whitman College (NCAA Div. III) on Aug. 26, and the University of Santa Clara on Sept. 9. Each of the games tips off at 7 p.m.
