Born and raised in Surrey, I moved to Abbotsford in 1985 and grew to love the community. My roots and commitments in the Fraser Valley became even stron-ger when I married Ingrid and we started a family. With over 20 years experience in sales and marketing, my next challenge was entering real estate. This career plunge, now several years ago, has brought me growth, relation-ships, and the career satisfaction of a job well done beyond my dreams. My relationships with my clients are of the utmost importance to me. I am commit-ted to providing the care, understand-ing, service, and attention they deserve. Accountability, availability, opportunity, and results for my clients are the core of my business.

I am a self-confessed “car guy” and have been racing, restoring, and ap-preciating all kinds of vehicles since the day I brought home my driver’s license. Over the years I noticed how diffi cult it can be to fi nd the right prop-erty for “toys”, from cars to boats to rec-reational vehicles. I decided to dedicate part of my business to specializing in “Real Estate for Car Guys” and everyone looking for unique properties, garages and shops in the Fraser Valley.

Despite climbing home prices and tighter mortgage rules, home sales in the Fraser Valley are on the rise this spring. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 1,608 property sales in May, an increase of nine per cent compared to 1,477 sold in May 2010 and an increase of six per cent over April’s 1,516 sales. “Overall, the Fraser Valley market is in a balanced position, however, there are signifi cant differences amongst individual communities and property types stressing the importance of getting local expertise if you’re thinking of buying or selling,” said board presi-dent Sukh Sidhu. “For example, sales of single family detached homes in South Surrey/White Rock, Clover-dale and North Delta remain brisk with those markets favouring sellers, however, in Abbotsford and Mission high inventory and downward pressure on prices is good news for buyers.”In Langley, Surrey Central and North Surrey, condi-tions remain balanced for sales of detached homes.A new monthly report released by the board shows variation in home prices. In May, the benchmark price for Fraser Valley detached homes was $529,810, an increase of 2.8 per cent year-over-year. The benchmark

price is the predicted sale price of a typical property in the Fraser Valley. However, May’s average price for detached homes was $630,870, an 11.6 per cent increase over May 2010. Sidhu says this growth has been infl u-enced by the sale of higher-end homes or homes with larger lots.“The average price and its percentage change often do not provide an accurate picture of the real market, which is why we talk about prices of ‘typical’ homes that most people are buying or selling,” he added. In May, the benchmark price of Fraser Valley town-homes was $324,730, a decrease of 1.1 per cent com-pared to $328,295 in May 2010, while the price of apart-ments was $250,988 in May, a decrease of 0.5 per cent compared to the $252,221 price in May last year.May also fi nished with 2.9 per cent more active listings than it had in April – 9,978 compared to 9,697 – but 12.6 per cent fewer than the 11,411 listings that were active during May of 2010. Overall, the real estate board reported 3,070 new list-ings in May, which translates to an increase of 5.2 per cent over April but a decrease of 11.2 per cent com-pared to the 3,457 new listings received in May 2010.

SERVING UP THE HST

Adrian MACNAIRAbbotsford News

When it comes to the harmonized sales tax, some busi-nesses in Abbotsford have fared better than others.

The type of business is a key factor, since an independent panel on the HST said last month the tax tends to have an initial negative impact on companies that provide services.

That’s particularly true for restaurants.Michael Dicks, owner of Q Steakhouse on Gladwin Road,

said the food service industry always sees a decline with new taxes because it’s the first luxury item consumers cut back.

Dicks estimated the industry is down 20 per cent because of the HST, but he remembers a similar impact with the introduction of the GST in 1991.

“The restaurant industry bombed,” he said. “It was just a huge, massive decline.”

Dicks said the greater impact has been the tougher drinking and driving laws, which came into effect Sept. 20.

Alicia Bodlay, co-owner of Restaurant 62 on McCallum Road, agrees.

She said the alcohol laws, coupled with the economic downturn and an increase to the minimum wage, has made it almost impossible to isolate blame on the HST.

The panel’s report indicates only 17 per cent of total consum-er spending has been impacted by the HST, but service-based industries – which employ 80 per cent of the total workforce in the province – have faced two distinct challenges.

The first problem, explains Ian Tostenson, president of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association, is there are no tax savings because restaurants don’t pay taxes on food items or labour. Secondly, the additional seven per cent on a restaurant bill shrinks business margins, since the restaurant has to choose between upsetting cus-tomers with the price increase or trim their profits.

Tostenson said the percent-age of the market, or “share of stomach,” of dining out versus eating in was reduced to 39 per cent from 46 per cent after the GST was introduced. That eventually rebounded to 43 per cent, but there was a perma-nent loss and he expects the same from the HST.

Peter Leitch, co-chair for the Smart Tax Alliance, said there are going to be some initial “winners and losers,” but eventually most businesses in the province will benefit from the HST.

If the economy grows and creates jobs – which the panel concluded will happen with the HST – Leitch believes res-taurants will benefit commensurately.

“If we have a healthy business then we’re certainly going to use restaurants more than we would otherwise,” he said.

Leitch said the nature of consumer pricing is based on the

cost to the business providing the product or service, so if that cost goes down then the price will as well, in part due to competitive pressures.

Ben Besler, former regional Fight HST organizer and roof-ing business owner in Chilliwack, said the extra seven per cent on his services has impacted his company.

Although the government has since announced a two per cent reduction of the provincial portion of the HST by 2014, Besler calls it “a bribe to buy into the service.”

The panel revealed the HST has brought the province additional revenue of $1.3 billion, contrary to government claims the tax would be revenue-neutral in the first year. That has come mainly at the expense of the service industry and the consumers who support it.

But Patrick Giesbrecht, president of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, said although the rise in costs

for services upsets some people, they often don’t realize prices have either dropped or remained stable in other sectors.

He said it’s “a bit of a paradox” that the people who tend to be the angriest about the tax are the ones who will either be the least affected by it, or actually benefit with HST rebate cheques because of their low income.

Dicks said he’s had to cut back on staffing, but the industry will slowly rebound.

“Some people have stopped spending or going out, not because they can’t afford it, but because they’re p...d off,” he said.

But if the HST is abolished, people aren’t necessarily going to start eating out more, he acknowledged.

The HST recently received an unlikely expression of support from the tourism and hospitality industry, with business leaders saying the potential economic growth in the long-term out-weighs the challenges.

Tostenson said the HST is gen-erally beneficial for B.C., but needs to be reworked to mitigate harm to restaurants.

“The government’s a little bit mad at the restaurant industry, thinking we’re all anti-HST and we’re not,” he said.

Bodlay is one restaurant owner who wants the HST to stay.

“I think the lowering of the tax by two points will probably give people an optimistic view of spending more money and that is hopeful for us,” she said.

Leitch said the HST will give the province a balanced budget without raising income taxes, while sustaining important services such as health care and education, both of which outpace the rate of inflation.

But the anger at the HST hasn’t gone away since the suc-cessful petition initiative culminated in the upcoming pro-vincial referendum on the tax, said Besler. He has noticed the increased costs in his personal spending – the panel

Michael Dicks, owner of Q Steakhouse, says the restaurant industry has felt the impact of the HST, but wil rebound.

Semi smacks Sumas overpass

Home targeted twice

Bridge damage estimated at more than $200,000Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

An accident in which a truck hit the underside of the Sumas Way overpass on Tuesday morning can be blamed on two issues, according to a repre-sentative with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Doug Wilson, area manager of bridges, said the truck had been authorized to travel the route from Surrey to Maple Ridge and use the underpass, but the permit listed its height as 4.8 metres.

He said the trucker then missed the signs on the south side of the underpass, indicat-ing a height clearance of 4.62 metres.

“The permit should never have been issued, but the truck driver should have noticed the signs,” Wilson said.

The truck, owned by Ludeman

Trucking Ltd. of Surrey, was headed for Maple Ridge at the time of the accident. The vehicle was travelling north

on Sumas Way, and the tank that it was transporting hit the north side of the overpass as the semi was emerging from

beneath the structure. It is now being determined

whether the trucking compa-ny’s insurance will cover the estimated $200,000 to $300,000 repair costs, or whether the ministry will foot the bill.

A spokesman for Ludeman Trucking said the company is waiting to hear the outcome, but stands by a solid 40-year reputation.

“We handle over-sized cargo regularly. I can’t remember the last time we’ve had an inci-dent,” he said. “There are rules to be followed, and we followed them.”

Wilson said a temporary post is holding the structure’s dam-aged girder in place. Drivers can expect lane closures when more extensive repair work begins in another couple of weeks. It is expected to take two or three months to com-plete, he said.

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure inspect damage to the bridge on Sumas Way on Tuesday morning. Three of the beams were damaged.

WELL CAPACITYBOOSTED

Watering bans shouldn’t be an issue this summer, due to the approval of the Bevan wells groundwater supply project. The City of Abbotsford recently received an environmental assessment certificate. The Bevan wells have been used at a lower capacity, said Tracy Kyle, Abbotsford’s water and solid waste manager. The wells can now be used at full charge. The $3.5-million project will increase the pumping capacity of the four operating wells from the current rate of 74.9 litres per second to 290 litres per second. Mitigation wells are presently being installed at Horne Creek and BoaBrook to augment the water flow in the creeks so they aren’t impacted, said Kyle.

An east Abbotsford home was the site of two targeted attacks this week, including a shooting early yesterday morning.

Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, residents report-ed hearing eight to 12 semi-automatic rounds being fired in the area of Marshall and McMillan roads.

Police traced the shooting to a house in the 2000 block of Monteray Place, a five-home cul de sac located north of Marshall and east of McMillan.

Const. Ian MacDonald said no one was injured in the incident. Several bullets struck the front of the home, including the living room window, front door and garage.

Neighbours reported seeing a person, likely a man, running from the street and getting into a vehicle on Marshall Road. Investigators are still trying to gather more detailed descriptions of both the suspect and the car.

On Wednesday, investigators at the scene were looking at an assault rifle, but MacDonald could not confirm whether it was the suspect weapon.

He also said that for the safety of those in the home, he could not identify how many people were in the residence at the time of the shoot-ing.

The house was also targeted Tuesday at about 1 a.m., when a fire was set to some shrubbery at

estimated the average family spends $350 more per year under the HST– and that’s why he’ll vote to bring back the PST.

Bringing it back won’t be easy, or cheap. The panel estimated the province would lose $820 million in the first year, have to reinstate pro-vincial tax offices which cost $35 million each year to operate, and possibly repay Ottawa $1.6 billion it received under the HST agreement.

If left intact, by the year 2020 the HST is

estimated to grow the economy 1.1 per cent and create 24,400 more jobs than it would under the PST/GST.

The Fraser Institute released an analysis on the HST June 3 estimating the average B.C. family will pay $953 less in sales tax in 2014 with a 10 per cent HST rate, though increased corporate taxes would reduce overall tax relief to $750. It also said eliminating the HST would only reduce the tax bill of an average family by $73 a year.

the front of the home. The homeowners extin-guished the fire with a garden hose before it could spread.

A police car was parked outside the home all day Tuesday. The accelerant burn line could be seen along the driveway.

He said the occupants of the home do not have a criminal background, although they have had previous contact with police.

A property title search indicates the home was purchased in the fall of 2003.

A neighbour described the owners as “very nice, soft-spoken people. I’ve never heard of anything happening there,” he said.

The News has learned the couple are the parents of Shafa Aram, 29, who was sentenced to four years in prison in February 2003 for manslaughter.

He shot Gregory Huebner, 41, five times on Jan. 9, 2009 as Huebner sat in his car at an apartment complex at 2970 Gladwin Rd.

During Aram’s sentencing hearing, it was revealed that he was a dial-a-dope drug dealer who went by the street name “Savio.” He got

in Huebner’s car with the intention of con-ducting a drug transaction, and shot him after Huebner pepper-sprayed him in the eyes.

Aram was initially charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to man-slaughter.

This is the fourth targeted shooting in Abbotsford this year.

On Jan. 4, eight to 12 shots were fired at a home at 2504 Bradner Rd., narrowly missing the head of a 25-year-old woman who had just pulled into the driveway.

On Feb. 20, 10 shots were fired at a home on Hope Road, where a family with no criminal background lived. The man who police believe was the intended target lived in a different house on the same street.

The third shooting was on March 11 at a residence in the 32900 block of Gatefield Avenue. Four adults and two young children were home at the time.

Anyone with information about the latest shooting is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Yale treaty is the toughest yet

The treaty with the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon was hast-ily approved as the B.C. legislature adjourned for the summer last week.

This treaty was by far the most signifi -cant work of the legislature session, and it may make or break the hugely expen-sive B.C. treaty effort. Yet it received all of four hours of debate during the abbre-viated spring legislature session and will probably get little attention when it reaches the House of Commons for fi nal approval.

A few eyebrows were raised when Chief Justice Lance Finch of the B.C. Court of Appeal entered the legislature to give royal assent to the treaty and a handful of other bills. This would normally be the duty of Lt.-Gov. Steven Point, but he was on a four-day visit to promote literacy at reserves in the Quesnel and Williams Lake area.

I’m advised by the lieutenant-gover-nor’s staff that this trip had been sched-uled for some time, and his absence had nothing to do with the treaty awaiting his signature. It is purely a coincidence that Point is a former tribal chair of the Sto:lo Nation, which sent a delegation to the legislature to protest the Yale treaty just before it was tabled.

The only substantive scrutiny of the treaty, and the only vote against it, came from independent Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson.

He stressed that he supports the Yale’s right to a treaty, but detailed the Sto:lo’s objections.

Their central objection is that the 150-member Yale band is an arbitrary creation of the Indian Act, a splinter group of the larger Sto:lo Nation.

The treaty formalizes the Yale’s con-trol over key canyon fi shing and rack drying sites that were vital to survival for thousands of years.

Ottawa outlawed transfer of native hereditary property rights in its notori-ous potlatch law of 1884, and native fi sh sales in 1888. This disrupted whatever order had been imposed by Sto:lo clans on the fi shing sites. Some Sto:lo people

were moved south to reserves in the Fraser Valley, where they were expected to abandon their traditional ways and become farmers.

Sto:lo Nation president Joe Hall put it to me this way: “I don’t want to be like Donald Trump and look at people’s birth

certifi cates, but the Yale are a Sto:lo band. They would have been chased out of there a long time ago if they weren’t.”

In the treaty debate, Simpson put it to Aboriginal Relations Minister Mary Polak that the federal and provincial governments have resorted to a “fi rst-past-the-post” system to force progress on treaties.

He said the tiny Yale community gets a huge advantage by complet-

ing a treaty, while some Sto:lo bands remain at an early stage of negotiations and still others aren’t in treaty talks.

Polak cited a section that is now stan-dard in modern treaties. It protects the constitutional rights of other aboriginalswhere a court upholds a claim to Yale territory, which they will soon own as fee-simple property.

Polak insisted the Yale treaty will ease tensions in the disputed fi shing sites, where violent incidents have taken place.

She argued that exclusive access to the main areas of dispute was long ago included in the Yale’s original reserves.

The treaty will provide a process for temporary access by other people, native and non-native.

We will see if she is right, perhaps as early as this summer.

There are two regions of B.C. where the encroachment of European settlers led to shooting wars with aboriginal people. One was the Cariboo-Chilcotin and the other was the Fraser Canyon.

Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocal-news.com

The huge crowds that have gathered at downtown viewing sites to watch the Vancouver Canucks ’ drive to win their fi rst Stanley Cup have been cel-ebratory and well-behaved. No matter that they’re crammed onto narrow city blocks straining to see what they can on distant big screen monitors.

Surrounding municipalities have also jumped on board, multiplying the sites as the series moved to Boston for games three and four. Abbotsford, Burnaby, Surrey and Richmond all set up big screens for large gatherings of fans to soak in the Stanley Cup vibe.

It’s human nature to share the company of others at monumental occasions, be they happy like a victory in the Stanley Cup, the arrival of a new year, or tragic like the 9/11 terror attacks. Most world class cities have some sort of easily accessible location to host huge gatherings of people: New York has Central Park ; Paris has the Champs de Mars below the Eiffel Tower, London has Hyde Park, Berlin

has the wide boulevards and parks around the Brandenburg Gate.

Limited space and short-sighted urban design have left Vancouver without such a venue. That absence was a contributing factor to the 1994 Stanley Cup riot when post-game crowds ran amok downtown because they had no place to go.

The lessons learned from that experience were put to good use dur-ing the 2010 Winter Olympics , when organizers created satellite gathering sites to serve the crowds seeking some Olympic buzz. It worked.

That spirit has fueled the Stanley Cup street party. The addition of suburban sites has spread the party atmosphere around the Metro region.

The lack of stories on the nightly news about stabbings and liquor seizures at these sites are testimony to how well they’ve been managed and how far the region has come since ’94.

Couple killed in crash

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Police got their man Monday afternoon on a logging road between Yale and Spuzzum.

James Douglas Campbell, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for a parole violation, was found riding a bicycle at around 4 p.m. and was arrested without incident.

Const . Ian MacDonald said police tracked him to the area after releas-ing information ear-lier that day about his whereabouts.

Police reported that Campbell, 60, had been tracked to Deroche (east of Mission) last Wednesday.

He was next traced to Hope, where he used an ATM and bought items at a con-venience store.

He now faces a charge of breaching his parole.

Campbell was wanted for violating his parole conditions after failing to return home on May 27.

He had been released from prison on May 11 after serv-ing a 24-year sentence for sexual offences against three girls – ages 12, nine and seven.

He abducted one of them while she was walking to school.

A Chilliwack man and woman were killed when their vehicle left Highway 1 and plunged into the Vedder Canal early Wednesday morning.

The two people, in their mid-50s, were heading east at the time of the 4:45 a.m. accident.

“For whatever reason, they left the road just prior to the cement barriers and ended up in the canal between the two bridges,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Jim Simmill at Fraser Valley Traffic Services.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Most accidents at the bridge over the canal have involved westbound, rather than east-bound, traffic.

The names of the victims are not being released until

families are notified by po-lice.

Early reports said the two

people were inside the vehicle when it was pulled from the water.

Riding for the fallen

Katie BARTELBlack Press

Last year’s Memorial Ride for the Fallen was only supposed to be a one-time event. That is until organiz-ers came face to face with B.C.’s silver cross families.

“I could not say no to the silver cross moms,” said Barry Drews, vice presi-dent of the 3rd CAV (Canadian Army Veterans) Ubique Unit, which orga-nized the ride. “They told me they couldn’t wait until next year. I knew we had started something here, that we couldn’t just let it go.”

The second annual Memorial Ride for the Fallen is on June 11 starting at 11 a.m.

This ride is not going to be your typical hog show. Yes, there’s going to be motorbikes of all calibre scream-ing down the highway, and riders, who at first glance come off as being tough and gruff with their scruffy beards and leather chaps. But if you look closely enough, you’ll likely catch a glimpse of their super sized hearts.

The Memorial Ride for the Fallen was organized as a way of honouring and paying respect to B.C. soldiers who have lost their lives (nine to date) and to show their families that their children, their siblings, their nieces and nephews will never be forgotten.

Hundreds of riders from all over B.C. will gather in Vancouver and ride their bikes down Highway 1 all the way to the Lickman Road exit in Chilliwack.

A memorial service will be held at the cenotaph to remember soldiers from B.C. who

lost their lives fighting in Afghanistan. Silver cross families will be in attendance.

Organizers hope to attract 1,000 riders and $20,000 in dona-tions.

Funds raised will go to the Military Family Resource Centre, and to the Honour House Society.

Visit www.honour-house.ca.

Vikings raid museumKerrie-Ann SCHOENITAbbotsford News

The Vikings of Reik Félag are invad-ing this weekend’s Optimist Family Fun Fair.

Made up of 40 his-tory buffs, the Norse Culture Recreation Society brings the Viking age into the present with interac-tive living history portrayals.

On Saturday, the MSA Museum’s front lawn will be converted into a seasonal trading village, equipped with tents, crafts, games and activities for all ages. The society, whose Icelandic name is translated to travel-ling fellowship, draws on archaeological, literary and historical sources to create an authentic experience.

“We really try to present life in a Viking village as opposed to just the warriors in a Viking village,” said museum public relations coordinator Sheila Louise Wright, who is also a member of the Norse culture society. “We consider ourselves to be liv-

ing history experts or experimental archeologists. There is certainly a portion of entertainment to it, but we’re definitely more about teaching you what Vikings are actually about.”

The village will illustrate what it was like for travelling merchants during the Viking era, what kinds of items were traded,

and what was used for bartering. Reik Félag members will bring some of their weap-ons, armour, weaving, music, food, spinning, stories, metalworks, and other arts and crafts to show and trade. Visitors will also have an opportu-nity to try their hand at spinning with a drop spindle, carry a Viking sword or learn

to play Kubb. One aspect of the

education is dispel-ling some of themyths associated withthe Vikings, such asthe fact they didn’twear horned helmets. There’s a lot more toViking culture thanbeing raiders or pil-lagers, said Wright, and much of that isstill evident today. Forexample, she pointsout that Canadianlaw is actually basedon a Viking judicialsystem.

“There’s a lot ofthings the Vikingsgave to our modernworld that peopledon’t realize andthat’s the kind of stuffwe’re trying to edu-cate people on,” saidWright. “They werea very sophisticatedsociety which peopledon’t realize. Theyweren’t just a bunchof barbarians.”

The fair runs from11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Freefood and refreshmentswill be provided by theAbbotsford OptimistsClub.

MSA Museum islocated at 2313 WareSt.

Sheila Louise Wright (Viking name-Gala Eiriksdottir) sings while playing a Anglo-Saxon Lyre. She’s getting into character for Saturday’s Optimist Family Fun Fair.

More than 400 quilts will be dis-played, about 30 merchants will be in attendance, and the Quilts of Valour display will feature quilts that are distributed to Canadian soldiers in-jured while on active duty.

Reaching back to move forward ...

A crowd of about 1,500 turned out to watch Game 3 of the Stanley Cup broadcast at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre on Monday night. The initial excitement of fans was quickly washed away as the Vancouver Canucks went down to a dismal 8-1 defeat to the Boston Bruins. The AESC will also carry Games 6 and 7 on its JumboTron, if the series goes that far.

Bertram wins UFVteaching excellenceaward

Dr. Chris Bertram started his post-secondary education in a small, student-focused institution that featured lots of student–faculty interac-tion, and he has ended up teaching in a similar place.

Bertram, who lives in Chilliwack and teaches in Abbotsford, and who has been teaching kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley since 2003, is this year’s

winner of the UFV Teaching Excellence award.

His educational journey led him from the Athletic Therapy diploma program at Calgary’s Mount Royal College, through a bachelor’s and master’s degree in science at the University of Nevada and a PhD in kinesiology at Simon Fraser University.

“I take my role as an educa-tor very seriously, so it is a

huge honour for me to receive this award,” said Bertram.

The small class sizes and opportunity to work closely with students offered by UFV suits Bertram’s teaching style and philosophy.

“The one thing I have learned about effective teach-ing is that you simply cannot fake it. If you aren’t 100 per cent excited and committed to the message you are trying

to convey, you will lose the room. The best teachers I had in school were the ones who brought passion and enthu-siasm to their classes, and I suppose that I got lucky that I found an area that I am genu-inely passionate about.”

Bertram recently became Kinesiology department head at UFV and will receive his award on June 10 at UFV’s convocation ceremony.

Abbotsford gets world-class BMX

Adrian MACNAIRAbbotsford News

The BMX BC Cup was held in Abbotsford June 5, featuring a new world-class track.

The Olympic-sized Supercross track was funded in part by the not-for-profit ath-letes charity B2ten ($110,000) and the City of Abbotsford.

It is one of three in North America, and the only one in Canada now similar in size and structure to the track used dur-ing the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Last weekend’s event included the Men’s Elite Union Cycliste Internationale Class 4 and 5 events.

In the Class 5 cate-gory, 19-year-old Tory Nyhaug of Coquitlam came in first place.

Nyhaug has estab-lished a name for himself in BMX rac-ing, finishing fourth in the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in the Netherlands on May 28.

He now sits sixth in UCI world rankings.

“He’s our local star, we’re really proud of him,” said Steve Baxter, president of Abbotsford BMX.

James Brown, 22, from Alberta, fin-ished fourth, while Ryan Wright, 20, from Ontario, rounded out

the Canadians in the top six.

There was also a full amateur field for the BMX BC Cup Series,

which continues July16 and 17 in RidgeMeadows. Full resultswill be posted on cy-clingbc.net.

Valley soars to 7-0 startAdrian MACNAIRAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Valley Rebels squeaked by the Nanaimo Timbermen 3-2 on Sunday to move to 7-0 in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association Senior B standings.

Head coach Jim Nishiyama said it was one of the lowest scoring lacrosse games

he’s ever been a part of, but added the team was shorthanded with just 12 runners.

“It was scoring by committee,” he said, adding Tommy Tran netted the winning goal with 10 minutes left in the game.

Although the offensive output was limited, Valley’s stand-out goalkeeper Matt

Morehouse kept them in the game, allowing just two goals on 31 shots.

Morehouse turned aside 47 of 49 shots in a 15-2 drubbing of the Langley Warriors last Friday, posting a 0.959 save percentage, while picking up two assists of his own.

The offensive output was heavy in that game

as Jordan Hernandezscored four goals, including a powerplaymarker, and added fiveassists on the night.

Valley was sched-uled to play Nanaimoin the rubber matchtomorrow (Friday) inAbbotsford, but thatgame has been tenta-tively moved to Sundayin Nanaimo because ofthe Stanley Cup final.

Abbotsford golfers James Lepp and Nick Taylor had a tough time at the Times Colonist Island Savings Open golf championship in Victoria last weekend.

The locals were paired in the final round, with Lepp shooting a 4-under 66 on the final day to push him into a five-way tie for 17th place. Taylor came in 22nd.

Meanwhile, Adam Hadwin, who was second on the money list heading into the tournament, missed the cut after two rounds of 73.

Only one Canadian finished in the top 10, Dustin Risdon of Alberta, who finished in third place at 10-under-par.

Mexico’s Jose de Jesus Rodriguez shot 4-under-par on Sunday for a four-round total of 267, picking up the win and $32,000.

The next Tour stop is in Kamloops, June 9 to 12 at the Rivershore Estates and Golf Links.

Mariners still winless despite goal surgeAdrian MACNAIRAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Mariners launched a season-high three-goal offensive output against the Tacoma Tide last Sunday, but it wasn’t enough for the victory, as defen-sive lapses resulted

in coughing up four goals and the game.

It was the third loss of the young season, accompanying two draws, putting the Mariners in a tie for last place with the Washington Crossfire in the Premier Development League

Northwest Division.“From an attacking

perspective, we were obviously delighted with the three goals,” said head coach Ian Knight, but added defensive blunders were like “shooting ourselves in the foot.”

Midfielder Adriano

Negri and strikers Sasa Plavsic and Danfi Parker scored for the Mariners in the loss.

A day ear-lier Abbotsford had fought to a 1-1 draw with the North Sound SeaWolves, who also have yet to find the win column this sea-

son.The Mariners will

play the Portland Timbers at 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11, in Abbotsford’s Bateman Park. The Timbers are coming

off a record-breaking 20-0-0 season last year en route to winning the PDL C h a m p i o n s h i p s , though they are in third place this year.

On Sunday at 6

p.m., they will facethe league-leadingKitsap Pumas, whoare 6-0-1 and haveaveraged more thantwo goals per game. That game is also atBateman Park.

The successful candidate will have a post-secondary education from a recognized institution or two years of sales experience, preferably in the advertising or retail industry. The winning candidate will be required to meet sales targets by deepening relationships with existing clients and developing new business with an aggressive face-to-face cold calling mandate.
