Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said 19 break-ins have occurred in the area from Nov. 5 to Feb. 1. The number constitutes half the residential break-and- enters that took place in all of Abbotsford during that time. MacDonald said the number is surprising, considering that Abbotsford recorded an overall eight per cent drop in home break-ins from 2013 to 2014. The majority of the recent thefts have taken place be- tween 5 and 9 p.m., with the culprits forcing their way in through a rear window or rear sliding glass door. Investigators believe that a small number of people are responsible for these crimes and likely live in the area. “It’s more likely people who are part of the neighbour- hood and have some expectation and knowledge that the homes they’re breaking into have a large amount of cash and jewelry,” MacDonald said. He said the culprits have been leaving behind other items typically stolen in home break-ins such as portable electronics. Police first warned the public of the break-ins in November after seven thefts took place in the Blueridge Drive and Townline Road area. The biggest theft involved $50,000 in cash and jewelry, and the losses in two others were valued at $30,000 and $15,000. MacDonald said police do not believe the break-ins are connected to the “Townline Hill Conflict,” embroiling two groups of young men in a dispute since last spring that has involved vandalism, mischief, assaults and arson. The Townline Hill area of Abbotsford has experienced a surge in home break-ins over the last three months, with the thieves mainly targeting cash and jewelry.

Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said 19 break-ins have occurred in the area from Nov. 5 to Feb. 1.

The number constitutes half the residential break-and-enters that took place in all of Abbotsford during that time.

MacDonald said the number is surprising, considering that Abbotsford recorded an overall eight per cent drop in home break-ins from 2013 to 2014.

The majority of the recent thefts have taken place be-tween 5 and 9 p.m., with the culprits forcing their way in through a rear window or rear sliding glass door.

Investigators believe that a small number of people are responsible for these crimes and likely live in the area.

“It’s more likely people who are part of the neighbour-hood and have some expectation and knowledge that the homes they’re breaking into have a large amount of cash and jewelry,” MacDonald said. He said the culprits have been leaving behind other items typically stolen in home break-ins such as portable electronics.

Abby councillor Sandy Blue loses Maple Ridge city job

Blue let go from her position as economic development managerPhil MELNYCHUKBlack Press

Abbotsford city councillor Sandy Blue has been let go from her position at the city of Maple Ridge, after the council there said it wanted to go in a dif-ferent direction.

Blue, who’s been manager of strategic economic initiatives for the city since 2008, was relieved of her po-sition Tuesday.

In November, Blue – a local resident – was elected for the first

time to Abbotsford council as part of the AbbotsfordFirst team.

Mayor Nicole Read says the decision of council had nothing to do with that.

“It was all about fit,” she said.

“We need to deliver a strong economy in Maple Ridge going forward. We need to make some changes in order to do that.”

Read said people in last year’s citizens’ sur-vey said they wanted

more jobs and more shop-ping to come to Maple Ridge. The city is now working on a change in eco-nomic develop-ment strategy and, therefore, wanted a new

person to lead the four-person economic development depart-ment.

“I think our direc-

tion will be very much aimed at deal-closing,” said Read. “People have to know you exist in order to make a de-cision to invest here.”

Just before the November 2014 civic election, Coun. Corisa Bell wondered about Blue running for elec-tion in Abbotsford.

In September, Bell queried how Blue would have the time to sit on Abbotsford council while manag-ing Maple Ridge’s eco-nomic development.

Blue said then she didn’t see any conflict.

As Maple Ridge’s man-ager of strategic eco-nomic initiatives, Bluemade $107,676 in 2013. As one of eight council-lors in Abbotsford, she’llmake about $37,500 ayear.

Read said Blue’s sev-erance will be deter-mined by the city’s human resources de-partment.

Blue did not return multiple requests for comment by BlackPress.

Clark willing to hear city’s proposal on propane cannon regulations

Alex BUTLERAbbotsford News

If the City of Abbotsford asked the province to change legislation regulating the use of propane cannons, the province would give it consid-eration, said Premier Christy Clark during a visit to the Abbotsford News on Tuesday.

As Abbotsford looks towards creating a bylaw regulating the use of propane can-nons, Clark said the province will review the city’s proposal and determine whether it can be accommodat-ed under the current law.

“Whether or not it’s a problem is not at issue here ... it creates all kinds of conflicts in communities like Abbotsford which are increasingly urban-izing, but also highly dependent on agricul-ture.”

When Clark was

asked whether the Right to Farm Act –  which protects the use of cannons as a normal farm practice –  could be changed in the future, she said “if the City of Abbotsford asks us to consider that legisla-tive change as part of their proposal, we will obviously give it some very serious thought. But until we see what they are asking for, and how they would like us to approach it, it’s hard to answer that ques-tion.”

Clark noted cannons have been a part of farming in the Valley for a long time and they’ve been an effec-tive tool, but added, “In a world where we are seeing increas-ing urbanization and these conflicts are getting bigger and bigger, we have an ob-ligation, perhaps, to think about it differ-

ently.” Mayor Henry Braun

told The News on Wednesday that the city previously sub-mitted a bylaw to regulate cannons that exceeded the restric-tions set out in the provincial guidelines –  and it was rejected by the minister of ag-riculture.

He said the city will try to pass a bylaw closer to provincial guidelines, simi-lar to one that was approved for the Township of Langley. Braun said that is a first step, and if the bylaw doesn’t work, they can return to the ministry and explain that it hasn’t helped

and something moreis needed.

“My understanding isthat the minister of ag-riculture may be opento imposing stricterregulations in certain applications, so that would be the next step.”

Braun said he plansto discuss the issue with other local may-ors.

Premier Christy Clark visited the Abbotsford News on Tuesday to discuss a wide range of topics.

Input sought on future of AbbotsfordAlex BUTLERAbbotsford News

While Abbotsford is “its own city in its own right” – an economic hub with a university, hospital and self-suf-ficient local economy – the neighbourhoods are not as complete, said Jennifer Fix at a meeting with city councillors on Jan. 19.

Fix is a senior plan-ner and project man-ager with Dialog, the consultant working on Abbotsford’s new of-ficial community plan project (OCP) –  called Abbotsforward.

An OCP guides deci-sion-making on growth and development in a city. Abbotsford’s last OCP was created in 2005. The new docu-ment, when complet-ed, guides how future development occurs in different areas of the city as the population increases.

Fix said Abbotsford

has many places to shop, dine out, and ac-cess services, but not many are within walk-ing distance of where people live. Only one in four people in Abbotsford are within a 10-minute walk from home from a grocery store, she said.

Abbotsford has many trails and parks for rec-reation – 85 per cent of residents are within a five-minute walk of a

park – and people who live here say that is important to them, ex-plained Fix. But while recreation is available, walking and cycling to move around the city is more complicated, she said. Fix explained that getting people to walk or cycle is about density and connec-tivity –  giving people simple paths to places they want to go.

“The way you lay out

your city has every-thing to do with the kind of choice you are providing people.”

Abbotsford has a lot of community spaces, such as galleries and churches, which peo-ple see as the heart of their communities – but there are not as many informal plac-es where people can gather, such as side-walk cafes, said Fix.

While Abbotsford is the heart of the Fraser Valley, when people are asked what the heart of Abbotsford is, “it’s a little bit less clear.” Finding the heart of the city and neigh-bourhoods will be an important part of the OCP process, said Fix.

Abbotsford is grow-ing and with medi-um growth, the city will reach a popula-tion of about 200,000 in about 20 years. If the city grows more

Online surveyrapidly, it could hit that popula-tion in 15 years, said Fix. There are outside constraints that shape how Abbotsford can grow, including the Agricultural Land Reserve, en-vironmentally sensitive areas, and mountainous terrain. Fix said that while Abbotsford celebrates its sta-tus as “the city in the country,” in recent years, development has been neither city nor country, but instead has been suburban.

Brent Toderian, a planner and stra-tegic advisor with Dialog, said the former OCP was so flexible that it did not provide clarity to developers, which can lead to development shy-ing away from the community.

Toderian explained that the OCP needs to be a plan for tomorrow,

not yesterday or today – adding that “this is a plan for the future.”

Over the next six weeks, the citywill run a promotional campaignencouraging people to get involved and share their ideas for the fu-ture of Abbotsford. There will be an online survey where residents can make their ideas known, orthey can visit the travelling road shows to talk with city planners, and join neighbourhood walks andcitizen circles, where people can talk with neighbours, family andfriends about their plans.

Abbotsford News press hall move spurred by expansion

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

For almost 40 years, the press hall at the Abbotsford News has produced millions of news-paper pages from its location at Gladys Avenue in Abbotsford, just off South Fraser Way and Sumas Way.

Every week since the late 1970s, huge rolls of news-print have whirred through the Goss Urbanite web offset press to bring local papers to Abbotsford and communities such as Mission, Chilliwack, Hope, Langley, White Rock and Surrey.

A new era began on Monday, Feb. 2 with the closure of the press hall at the Abbotsford News and its move to the Vantage Way Production Centre in Delta along with about 20 transferring press personnel and support staff.

Publisher Andrew Franklin said the press hall move is a positive one for Black Press, which owns more than 150 titles in print and online in Canada.

“Print is alive and well. Black Press is looking at new con-tracts and we’re looking to ex-pand,” Franklin said.

Black Press currently holds the contract for the printing of the daily Vancouver Metro and the National Post.

Now, with the move to the Vantage Way site, Black Press adds a contract for The Province at the Vanpress facil-ity in Burnaby.

In addition to the new press at Vantage Way, Black Press also installed new inserting equipment to handle the in-creased flyer volumes.

Franklin said that between the existing press facility at Vanpress and the new Vantage Way site, Black Press will ser-vice all of its community pa-pers in the Lower Mainland, in addition to the contracts for the three dailies.

Franklin said the move to Vantage Way was made in part to accommodate the printing of the daily newspapers in a loca-tion that is more acces-sible to Vancouver and en-ables more efficient delivery times.

He said readers will not no-tice any delays in the delivery of their community newspa-per, as printing schedules have been adjusted to account for the extra travel time.

Franklin said the Vantage Way location is a state-of-the-

art facility with a new Goss DGM 430 press that is more efficient and technologically advanced than the old press.

Harvey Toews, who will manage the pre-press area at Vantage Way and has been with the Abbotsford News for 45 years, said he feels fortunate

to have been involved in the “ever-evolving tech-nological advances” in the newspaper industry.“The transition to the

Vantage Way Production Centre marks a significant change and improvement in press technology. I am happy to be part of the team to facilitate this project,” he said.

Press foreman Garry Buller, who has been with The News since 1974, said the move brings with it a “lot of reflection on how far we’ve come.”

He recalls working from a small shop down the road from the current Abbotsford News building where an old Linotype machine was used, in which printing involved moulds filled with molten lead.

“There have been many tech-nological changes throughout our career, but it’s been the staff and people I work with that have made it an honour to be able to continue this trade and develop better ways to bring you (the reader) the best product we can,” Buller said.

Franklin added, “In our ev-er-changing media world it is pleasing to see that despite advances in online market-ing, community newspapers continue to be a strong factor when it comes to local adver-tising and being connected to your own community.”

The Abbotsford News and numerous other sister community papers, as well the Vancouver Metro, are now being printed at a new Black Press facility in Delta.

Livingstone Avenue development to move forwardAlex BUTLERAbbotsford News

A 435-unit development at the corner of Livingstone Avenue and Maclure Road will move forward, pending final council approval.

Council gave third read-ing to the rezoning proposal, which will create 400 apart-ment units and 35 townhouse units on the site, which bor-ders Gardner Park in west Abbotsford.

The development will see two-storey buildings on the east side of the lot, which is adjacent to a single-family home neighbourhood. The buildings will rise to six sto-

reys on the western side at Livingstone Avenue.

The developer will be re-quired to meet a number of conditions, including a pay-

ment of almost $350,000 to the city’s parkland acquisi-tion fund and $200,000 for habitat compensation in Gardner Park. The developer

will also have to install a new traffic signal at the en-trance of the development, and provide almost $20,000 cash-in-lieu for street trees, and $10,000 for a pedestrian countdown timer at Maclure Road and Livingstone Avenue.

Coun. Ross Siemens said many neighbouring residents expressed concern about traffic congestion in the area at the public hearing on Jan. 26, and city manager George Murray explained that while the city’s official community plan update is ongoing, staff could ensure that the traffic master plan is updated for that area to ensure traffic management is considered.

Plans for 435 housing units at the corner of Livingstone and Maclure will see two-storey buildings on the east side of the lot.

Helping low-income, single-parent families Editor:I have an idea I

think would be a great benefit to the city of Abbotsford, however I don’t have the contacts or resources to be able to make it work.

The idea results from the situation of a friend, although I know she isn’t the only par-ent in Abbotsford who experiences this diffi-culty. She is a very low-income single mom. She and her children live below the poverty line even though she is employed full-time.

There are so many issues involved in her situation, but the one I’d like to address is the lack of reliable day-care options available to low-income and/or single parent families outside of normal day-care hours – parents who have to work eve-nings/weekends/shifts.

My friend has no family in town. She has in the past served sus-pensions from work for not being able to attend her shift because she had a babysitter cancel with no notice.

She works every weekend and three days during the week. Her children were at-tending a before-and-after-school program, but it only operates

Monday to Friday and closes at 6 p.m. She usually works until 7:30 p.m. and sometimes until 9.   She works for a large company and has no control over scheduling.  She has no choice but to work the shifts she is offered.

She had found a li-censed daycare to watch her boys after school. Within the first few days, this “profes-sional” cancelled with no notice.

My friend had to leave work to pick up her children and had no one to watch them for the rest of her shift. As a result, her em-ployer has placed her on probation and she is back to square one in terms of her senior-ity, etc.

She may lose her job because she can’t find

reliable child care.  Not every family in

Abbotsford fits the typ-ical model for daycare services.   Our commu-nity needs to step up with services for fami-lies who don’t fit the current mould.

My proposal would target mainly “inner city” families. Low-income, single parent families.

This program should be based out of a recre-ation facility like ARC/MRC or even a school with a gym, as many of these families cannot afford organized rec-reational activities for their kids.

There should be a meal component fac-tored in as well, because there are so many chil-dren who don’t have healthy meals provided for them at home. I’m

envisioning a partner-ship between the city (specifically the parks and recreation depart-ment), the provincial government (for help-ing to fund a pilot pro-gram), a community-based childcare orga-nization like the Hand in Hand Child Care Society and other day-care providers, perhaps a local grocery store.

Possibly even the school district in terms of allowing qualified staff to supervise high school students as part of their volunteer re-quirements (i.e. if they planned to go into teaching, etc.).

I have this huge idea, but I have no idea how to go about executing it. Any thoughts?

Jake Virtanen presented community champion award

Local hockey player Jake Virtanen was pre-sented with a commu-nity champion award at the meeting of city council on Monday.

Mayor Henry Braun presented the Vancouver Canucks first-round draft pick the award for con-tributing to Canada’s junior men’s hockey team’s “outstanding achievement in win-ning the gold medal at this year’s world junior hockey championships in January.”

Virtanen played on the team, which won with a dramatic 5-4 victory over Russia –  the nation’s first world junior gold since 2009.

Virtanen was pre-sented with a pav-ing stone noting his achievements, which will be placed along the city-wide Discovery Trail in the community champions pavilion.

There will be a cer-emony in October to install the stone.

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen is a first-round draft pick of the Canucks.

ture. The Celtic Village fills

Granville Street between Robson and Nelson with music, dance, fun and frolic, and food.

Yale secondary presents CinderellaVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

The Yale secondary musi-cal theatre department presents its production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella start-ing Feb. 15 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre.

Artistic director Willis Taylor, who has been involved with Yale’s musicals for 18 years, said the full-length Broadway produc-tion is being modelled after the “Enchanted” version.

That was first produced for the stage in 1997 after the third televi-sion production of Cinderella was aired with a contemporary take on the classic tale, starring sing-er Brandy in the lead role and Emily Smith and Chris Sherwood rehearse the parts of Cinderella and

the Prince for Yale secondary’s production of the Broadway musical.

Whitney Houston as the fairy godmother.

The first two TV productions had fea-tured Julie Andrews (in 1957) and Lesley Ann Warren (in 1965) in the lead role.

The Enchanted ver-sion features the same classic mo-ments as the original – such as the pump-kin, the glass slipper and the masked ball – with some surpris-ing new twists.

Taylor said he chose Cinderella based on his own family’s tastes.

“My kids grew up with it and they loved it, and most of the students know it because their parents had it (on video or DVD),” he said.

Taylor said he likes the Enchanted ver-sion because of its humour that involves “a lot of 1990s col-loquialisms” and its “colour-blind” ap-proach to the story in terms of its casting.

The Yale secondary cast of about 25, as well as 15 members of the live orchestra under the guidance of musical director Allen Reynolds, have been rehearsing four days a week since the start of the school year.

Taylor said among the biggest challeng-es the students have faced is perform-ing the production’s “ s e m i - o p e r a t i c ” tunes.

“It takes some skil led singers. Luckily, we have a few of those.”

Cinderella is the school’s 25th anni-versary production, and Taylor estimates each show now at-tracts about 300 au-dience members.

Last year, they per-formed Shrek the Musical.

Key roles in this year ’s produc-tion include Nada Moorthy and Emily Smith sharing the role of Cinderella, Elizabeth Richardson

and Kaili Vermeeren as the stepmother, Katharine Richardson and Jessica Spenst as the Fairy Godmother, and Jared Marshall and Chris Sherwood

as Christopher.The production

takes place Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. and Feb. 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent

Report shows value of pre-K learningSchool graduation rates remain above provincial average

Tyler OLSENAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Board of Education has released a report on student achievement

that highlights the dis-trict’s above average graduation rates and shows the importance of programs before many children even

enter kindergarten.The report shows

that Grade 4 students who participated in one of the district’s 13 Strong Start programs

perform, on average, better on reading, writing and numeracy tests than those whodo not.

Around four in every five students acrossthe district meet Grade4 reading, writing andnumeracy standards for foundation skills. But Strong Start partic-ipants do considerablybetter, especially in writing, where 90 percent meet the Grade4 goals, and numera-cy, where more than84 per cent meet thestandard.

“Not all childrenhave the same sort of experience or prepa-ration,” said board of education chair CindyShafer. “When the kidsare able to do a pro-gram like Strong Start, then those kids are better prepared for thenext step.”

The district’s num-bers are consistentwith studies elsewherethat show participa-tion in pre-school programs drasticallyimproves students’ chances of succeeding later in life, particularlywhen they come from vulnerable families.(With just over 30 percent of kindergartenstudents in Abbotsford coming form vulnera-ble families, the reportputs Abbotsford in the middle of the pack in B.C.)

Those founda-tion skills assess-ments results alsoput Abbotsford nearly 10 percentage pointsabove provincial aver-ages, a trend that con-tinued into high school, with Abbotsford boast-ing a graduation rate near 90 per cent, com-pared to the provincial average of just over 80per cent.

Shafer said thoserates don’t just reflect success at educating students in class; they also show the districtis largely succeeding at keeping students in-terested in school.

“Part of that is ourability to keep our stu-dents engaged,” saidShafer, who highlight-ed the range of electiveprograms and trade options offered by thedistrict.

“If we can keep stu-dents interested intheir learning … then they’re going to stay with us longer.”

There will be a lot of skill on display at Centre Ice Abbotsford next Friday (Feb. 13).

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. high school play-ers from several local hockey academies will be participating in the inaugural MEI Hockey Skills event.

The format is similar to the skills event at the NHL all-star game, with contests held for fastest skater, hardest

shot, stickhandling, multi-directional skat-ing, shooting accuracy and a goalie test. In the afternoon, there will be a 3-on-3 tour-nament.

Peter Hay, direc-tor of the MEI Hockey Academy, came up with the skills-event idea for players to showcase their skills against other schools at their grade level for both boys and girls.

With the support of Abbotsford Minor Hockey, B.C. Hockey,

Em Emkee of the St. John Brebeuf Bears takes the ball to the hoop during last weekend’s consolation final against Langley’s Credo Christian at the Big Bear Classic tournament. BIG BEAR CLASSIC Taylor makes cut, Hadwin misses at PhoenixAbby’s Nick Taylor had an-

other solid weekend, making the cut and finishing one-un-der and tied for 59th at the Phoenix Open.

Adam Hadwin missed the

cut after sitting at seven-over through two rounds.

Brooks Koepka finished at 15-under to claim victory and a cheque for $1,134,000.

The tourney is one of the

largest on the PGA calendar and features the famous par-three 16th hole, with a grand-stand full of rowdy fans cheer-ing – and sometimes jeering – the golfers.

Although Taylor had the bet-ter weekend, Hadwin drew more applause from fans onthe 16th with a tee shot thatcame to a stop within three feet of the pin.

by Sarah Tuft

Several local hockey academies to competeto see if other academies would be interested in participating in the event. The answer was an over-whelming yes.

Along with MEI, stu-dents from Strathconna, Sardis, Chilliwack Middle, Bateman and Hatzic will-participate. In total, there will be around 160 players in grades 6 to 12.

“I am sure it will grow in the future as other academies hear about the success of the event. My reasoning to building

this event was purely out of a need for students in academies to display the skills they are learning over the course of a long year in a competitive yet fun and respectful way against other similar stu-dents,” he said. “It gives the players something to work toward. It also helps the coaches to have some-thing to motivate players positively with.”

Hay explained the event is similar in format to a track and field meet as students compete at vari-

ous skills events. Winners for each grade and each test get a ribbon as top female and top male.

“My larger goal is to see this event grow to a much larger scale and po-tentially see other areas of B.C. participating and potentially holding their own events. The more we can encourage skill devel-opment in a fun way, I believe we are all winning because skill development should be fun and pro-moted to grow our game.”

Abby goalie gets call-up to NHL’s New York Rangers

Justin BEDDALLAbbotsford News

Abbotsford’s Mackenzie Skapski dressed for his first NHL game for the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night — and his parents, Traci and Denis, were in the stands cheering.

Despite the short notice, they weren’t about to miss his first NHL appearance — even if that meant a harried rush from the Valley to Manhattan.

The 20-year-old goaltender was called up by New York after Vezina-winning starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist was injured after taking a puck to the throat during a game on Saturday.

Skapski’s parents got the exciting news from their son on Tuesday while they were shopping at Ikea. Immediately, they booked their airline tick-ets over the phone and returned to Abbotsford and packed their bags in 15 minutes.

They then sped to YVR and barely made their flight.

On Wednesday, shortly before the puck dropped for the Rangers game against the Boston Bruins, Traci told The News by text “this is a whirlwind and so exciting.”

She also relayed a welcome-to-the-pros-kid story about “Mack” arriving in the Rangers dress-ing room.

After Skapski began to unpack his goalie gear, the equipment manager asked him what he was doing.

“I’m unpacking,” said the young goalie, as re-layed by his mother.

The equipment man-ager stopped him.

“You’re in the shownow,” he said. “Leave italone.”

Ranger backup net-minder Cam Tablolt gotthe start against theBruins on Wednesday night and Skapski, wearing jersey No. 70, served as his backup and was on the ice tak-ing shots during warm-ups.

Skapski, who played for the Bantam AAAAbbotsford Hawks, hadbeen playing with theNew York’s AmericanHockey League affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

In 24 games with theWolf Pack this season Skapski has a record of 12-7-3 and a 2.38 goalsagainst average. His .914 save percentage and his two shutoutstie him for fifth amongAHL rookie goaltenders.

He debuted in theAHL Oct. 24 againstAlbany and he posted his first AHL win – a shutout – on Oct. 26 vs.Norfolk.

Skapski played for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey Leagueand was selected by theRangers in the sixthround, 170th overall, of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

With starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist injured, Mackenzie Skapski gets to don Ranger blue

Jeep: designed in Motor City, made in ItalySan Jose, California – A new little Jeep with an Italian accent, called Renegade, will soon be available in Canadian dealerships. It’s designed in Detroit and built in Italy, but the iconic Jeep Wrangler influences are easy to spot. The Renegade is a contem-porary and more playful interpretation of Jeep, offering passenger-friendly utility, good on-road performance and fuel econ-omy combined with surprisingly impressive off-road prowess. The new model presents a fresh and cheerful overall design attitude that’s sure to appeal to younger buyers. An “X” motif that appears in numerous places, including the taillights, was taken from the rear-mounted jerry can on the original Willys army vehicle. A cleverly designed lightweight removable (MySpace) dou-ble-sunroof, which stores neatly under the rear cargo area, also adds to the mischie-vous character of Renegade. Jeep points to the Nissan Juke, Mini Countryman and Buick Encore as the expected prime competitors of Renegade. There are, however, a couple of aging compact utilities, Patriot and Compass, already in the Jeep line. So you have to wonder how much longer they’ll be around. Renegade will have a start price of just $19,995 (Sport edition) and comes in two 4x2 trim levels and four 4x4 trim levels, with prices topping out at $31,995. The base 4x2 Sport edition comes with a turbocharged 1.4-litre (Multiair) engine mated to a 6-speed manual trans-mission. The optional ($1,500) powertrain is a 2.4-litre (Multiair Tigershark) engine, paired (no swapping) with a 9-speed automatic. North, with 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains, is expected to be most popular trim level with all-in pricing in the mid twenties.

Jeep is pushing Renegade as a vehicle with genuine off-road warrior capabili-ties. A Trailhawk 4x4 edition comes with additional ride height, skid plates plus front and rear tow hooks. Unique front/rear fascias improve both approach and departure angle capability and it comes with 17-inch wheels with more aggressive tires. Trailhawk is designed to provide up to 482 mm of water fording capability and it comes with a Jeep Selec-Terrain system that includes a rock mode, Active Drive Low (with 20:1 crawl ratio) and Hill-descent Control. To prove prowess, Jeep included a three-hour stop at Hollister Hills SVRA, an off-road and dirt-biking Mecca about a hour from San Jose, in the drive route. The serious Jeep side of Renegade quickly became apparent as it tackled an arduous obstacle course and a steep hill climbing trail with ease. A short wheelbase makes it highly manoeuvrable in tricky situations and it’s aided by a

fully independent suspension with up to 205 mm (8.1 inches) of wheel articulation. Jeep’s fully automated off-road drive system is also second-to-none.Almost all of the driving tour was in a Renegade equipped with the 2.4-litre (180-horsepower) engine/automatic combination, which will probably be the most popular pairing. The steering is on the light side and is quicker acting than I’m used to in a Jeep. This high-revving engine is also a more refined and quieter power provider than in Wrangler. Impressively slick in operation, the nine-speed speed automatic is certainly setup for best fuel economy, with four overdrive gears. The turbocharged 1.4-litre (160-horsepower) base engine offers surprising oomph and seemed to make Renegade a bit quicker off the line. The 6-speed manual

is a little vague and has a notchy engagement feel, but I did like the cue ball style shift leaver. While official fuel economy numbers were not available, Jeep is expecting a combined fuel rating of about 8.1 L/100km, which would be excellent. The 4x4 versions of Renegade also feature a unique disconnecting rear axle feature that should provide fuel economy numbers that are close to the 4x2 versions.Tek-Tonic is what Jeep designers dubbed the Ren-egade’s funky yet functional interior. The Wrangler theme is also evident inside and includes the requisite passenger grab handle. It’s a softer, more comfortable Jeep people place with practical features such as the fold-forward front-passenger seat and a removable, reversible and height-adjustable cargo floor panel. Renegade is also tall folk friendly with oodles of head-room, so they could even wear a hat. A minor tall-roof drawback was noted, however, when I tried to reach for a distant sun visor above the upright windshield.Jeep claims Renegade has up to 70 standard and available safety and security features. There are seven standard air bags, including a driver’s knee air bag. On top of that you can layer an impressive list of optional active safety features that includes Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView and a Rear Backup Camera. The all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade is in a word…how you say…Stupendo!

‘‘The Renegade is a contemporary and more playful interpretation of Jeep, offering passenger-friendly utility, good on-road performance and fuel economy combined with surprisingly impressive off-road prowess.’’Bob McHugh
