Will washed out crops be reimbursed?Neil CORBETTAbbotsford News

Fall rains devastated potato and veg-etable crops across the Fraser Valley, and now producers face uncertainty about how much the government is going to help them.

The soggy September was disas-trous for many farmers. Peter Schouten of Heppell’s Potato Corp. said they were the worst losses he has seen in 17 years as a farm owner. The largest producer in Abbotsford, he plants 650 acres of potatoes on Sumas Prairie, and lost about 30 per cent of it, worth about $2 million.

Poinder Bhatti told the news he planted 110 acres of broccoli, and lost 78 of those, or 400 tons, representing $275,000.

In October, the provincial agri-culture ministry announced it had put together a nine-person working group to address the losses, but ques-tions remain.

Rob Butler of the B.C. Potato and Vegetable Growers Association, said producers have received money from crop insurance – for those who had it.

The AgriStability program will also reimburse farmers, but that income stabilization, administered by the

province, is slow in coming. Some farmers need help now to afford to plant this spring.

The AgriRecovery program is a joint federal/provincial program designed to compensate farmers in the event of natural disasters such as droughts, floods or disease.

It is triggered by the provincial government, which then pays 40 per cent of the assistance, and the fed-eral government pays the remaining 60 per cent.

“We’re still pushing for that,” said Butler. “I don’t know why the (pro-

Dogs have temporary homeKevin MILLSAbbotsford News

Abbotsford has solved its dog pound dilemma – tem-porarily.

Chilliwack has agreed to board dogs, normally housed at Mainland Municipal Animal Control Services in Aldergrove, until a permanent solu-tion can be found. The Aldergrove facility ended its business relationship with Abbotsford in January.

The Chilliwack pound, located on Wolfe Road, has the required capacity to house both cities’ dogs. It will accept the animals, for a maximum of 12 months, and will charge a flat rate of $4,000 per month.

While full details of the agreement won’t be discussed publicly until Monday’s Abbotsford council meeting, city manager Frank Pizzuto said the cost will be equal or even less than what the city has paid in the past.

“The agreement is for six months, with the option of extending it to 12,” said Pizzuto.

He said the $4,000 was just for the use of the facility, and Canadian Corps Commissionaires will likely be hired to ful-fill other aspects of ani-mal control for the city. That includes handling

public calls, transporting animals to Chilliwack and dog rescue services.

In the past, the Aldergrove company performed all of those duties as part of its

private contract.In 2010, the city’s

budget for ani-mal control was $426,000.

Mayor George Peary said the deal is a good one for the city and solves an immediate problem. However, a long-

term solution has to be found.

“Eventually we will have our own free-standing facility,” said Peary.

A lack of resources has delayed moving forward

on a new shelter, but Peary said it will have to be looked at, sooner rather than later.

A regional animal con-trol centre, run by the Fraser Valley Regional District, has also been dis-cussed, and could eventu-ally, permanently combine Abbotsford, Chilliwack and other communities.

However, the city is look-ing at leaving the FVRD, which may complicate such an option.

Local business owner Diane Davies recently spoke before council, urging them to create a new shelter. While she is relieved the dogs now have a place to go, she says it isn’t enough.

Chilliwack will act as local pound

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATED

BY APD

Abbotsford Police are investigating a fatal collision in Surrey involving an 18-year-old girl who was struck by a police car. The teen was attempting to cross King George Highway near 98 Avenue at about 9:40 p.m. Monday when she was hit by the RCMP car. She was not using a crosswalk at the time. She suc-cumbed to her injuries a short time later in hospital. The police officer involved has about two years’ experience. Abbotsford Police have supplied a team of investigators and collision reconstructionists. Any wit-nesses to the incident are asked to call 604-859-5225.

SIGN SPELLING ERROR FIXED

A long-standing civic spelling mistake will finally be corrected. All Delair road signs will be changed to read DeLair Road, the proper spelling of the family name. The DeLair family has been a part of the Abbotsford community for more than 100 years. In 2010, Ann DeLair contacted the City of Abbotsford and informed the mayor that, from the beginning, the DeLair family name on the DeLair street signs had been spelled incorrectly, with a lower case L.

RECOVERY HOME MEETING

The public can attend a neigh-bourhood consultation meet-ing on a proposed supportive recovery house located at 33416 George Ferguson Way. It takes place on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 7-8:30 p.m., at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2597 Bourquin Crescent East. The public can get information and comment on the proposal. For more information, contact Amy Anaka in the economic develop-ment and planning services de-partment at 604-864-5614 or by email at [email protected].

NewsBytesPlague of distractionJeff NAGELBlack Press

One year after B.C.’s dis-tracted driving ban kicked in, there’s little sign the threat of fines are helping drivers keep their eyes on the road and off their electronic gadgets.

“There’s a high percentage of people still using their cell-phones whenever they’re driv-ing,” RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said.

Police issued 32,000 tickets province-wide since the ban on handheld use of cellphones and similar devices began in February 2010, worth a total of $5.2 million in $167 fines.

In Abbotsford, about 400 tick-ets were issued by the end of 2010. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said while adherence has been strong for the tougher impaired driv-ing laws, that hasn’t been the case for the laws on handheld devices.

“We (police) still continue to count numbers of people that continue to breach the new legislation every time we’re travelling from point A to point B,” he said.

MacDonald said drivers have become more covert in their use of the devices. For example, rather than holding a cellphone in front of them to text, they’re doing it from their laps, creating an even greater hazard.

Distracted driving remained a factor in 32 per cent of all fatal crashes in B.C.’s RCMP-enforced jurisdictions in the past year.

In the Lower Mainland, it’s linked to 48 per cent of traffic deaths – a total of 45 people killed by distracted drivers since the new law took effect.

That doesn’t necessarily mean a distracted driver who caused a deadly crash was talking on a cellphone or tex-ting.

“It means they were doing something that took their eyes off the road,” Chung said. “Looking for a CD on the floor, playing with an iPod or maybe they spilled a cup of coffee and were wiping it up, not watch-ing where they are going.”

Playing video games and programming GPS units is also a problem, he said.

“The worst thing I’ve seen

is people looking down and texting when they’re making a left turn.”

Distracted drivers have been hit waiting mid-intersection to turn left when their green light goes yellow and then red. Others stopped at red lights can get rear-ended if the light turns green with-out them r e s p o n d -ing.

In addi-tion to the fines, driv-ers caught texting or e m a i l i n g also get three penalty points against their insurance.

RCMP Traffic Services Supt. Norm Gaumont suggested a review may be needed to examine whether the distract-ed driving penalties are stiff enough.

“If you look at our statistics, it’s clear the public doesn’t realize just how dangerous it can be if you don’t have

your full focus on the road,” he said.

BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation executive director Allan Lamb said it’s “unbe-lievable” large numbers of drivers still talk and text.

He said everyone should rethink their near-compul-sive need to be constantly plugged in and available to employers, friends and family.

He said b u s i n e s s e s and organi-zations with e m p l o y e e s

who must drive on the job should develop a policy on dis-tracted driving.

Enforcement of such poli-cies can be a problem, how-ever, as even ICBC discovered in recent weeks.

Private investigators hired by ICBC continued using hand-held video cameras while driv-ing to spy on an Abbotsford man suing for damages from

a crash. The tactic apparently contin-

ued until well into 2010 – after the ban took effect – until a judge criticized the practice and officials vowed it would change.

ICBC had long had guide-lines requiring all employees and contractors to drive safely and obey traffic laws.

Technically, a handheld video camera is not on the list of specifically banned devices, so police could not issue a ticket under the new law, although they could pur-sue a charge under the Motor Vehicle Act of driving with-out due care and attention.

A policing blitz throughout February is now underway to step up enforcement of the law.

Officers will be on the look-out not just for phone and gadget users, but also driv-ers putting on makeup while driving or reading a book or newspaper, even though those are not ticketable under the new law.

Police may be disguised to snare violators.

Abbotsford police officers are still finding many motorists flaunting the ban on the use of handheld devices while driving.

Some farmers will be short of funds to plant

From A4

The 2011 Rice Raiser Campaign kicks off this weekend at the Sumas Village Save-on-Foods.

The grocery store has supplied 1,000 kilo-grams of rice to be purchased and donated to the Abbotsford Food Bank for $5 a bag. All money raised supports the work of Hunger Response International in Cambodia, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Mexico.

Rice Raiser is a youth mobilized community event designed to increase awareness about global hunger. It started out as a pilot program in 2005 with students from MEI Secondary School. The class raised enough cash to feed 3,000 people in a developing country for a week, while 842 kilograms of packaged rice filled the local food bank shelves for a couple months.

Fifteen Abbotsford schools are currently par-ticipating in the Rice Raiser Campaign this year.

Feeding the poor

vincial) government is reluctant.”He has received indications that Ottawa is

willing to activate AgriRecover, but the prov-ince is holding up the process. Butler noted that if Victoria is worried about overcompensating farmers, the AgriRecovery program offers a means for them to claw back funds.

“You can at least become stabilized,” added Butler.

Schouten, who has been working with gov-ernment officials on the compensation issue, also believes Ottawa would be prepared to accept the situation as disastrous, and help producers.

“I know we have the feds on board,” he said. “We (Heppell’s) need it, and other producers definitely need it.”

While Schouten’s dollar losses may have been among the greatest, other smaller pro-ducers lost their entire crops, and their entire income.

“Some guys never even took the harvester out,” he said.

He noted some farmers don’t have crop insur-ance, and AgriStability will not come through for up to 18 months.

“Some of them will have to go into their

equity,” predicted Schouten. He believes AgriRecovery is warranted, and

would be a sound investment by the province.“It’s all money into our economy, and it

brings money from the feds.”Last year, the federal government gave a

$450-million package to Prairie farmers who had millions of acres wiped out by flooding, primarily in Saskatchewan, but also in Alberta and Manitoba.

Estimates are that B.C. producers would need $30 million.

The amount needed, and whether AgriRecovery is warranted, are questions that came up at a three-hour meeting with growers and agriculture ministry officials on Jan. 20, said Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen.

He said the ministry must write a submission to B.C. Agriculture Minister Ben Stewart, and has been asked to do that “as expeditiously as possible.”

Van Dongen said if the agriculture ministry sees there is “any pain” to producers, then the issue should be submitted to Treasury Board for AgriRecovery funding.

“This is a one-in-90-year event for potato farmers,” said van Dongen.

“It is a catastrophic event.”

Bill Vanderkooi of Abbotsford won an award for excel-lence in innova-tion in agriculture from the Investment A g r i c u l t u r e Foundation (IAF) of British Columbia.

Vanderkooi is the president of the Bakerview EcoDairy Association and CEO of the Nutriva Group.

Designed to show-case the latest in dairy technology, the Bakerview EcoDairy

features an on-site anaerobic digester, a robotic milker, comfort stall systems and innovations in the dairy’s lighting, ventilation and cow brushing systems.

The facility is also designed to promote agri-tourism and provides a learning environment through interactive tours.

“This award cel-ebrates the innova-tors who help B.C.’s agriculture and agri-

food industry stay on the cutting edge, for the benefit of all British Columbians,” said IAF chair Stuart Wilson.

H o n o u r a b l e mention went to Abbotsford’s Catalyst One On-Far m Anaerobic Digester, a facility currently under development to

process manure and other organic waste streams to produce biogas and high qual-ity fertilizer. It will be the first in B.C. to produce raw bio-gas that is upgraded to biomethane, a carbon-neutral fuel, and injected into the existing natural gas system.

B.C. moving backwards on education

Guess who said this last week: “We want to reward good teachers and stop making excuses for bad ones.”

No, it wasn’t B.C. Liberal leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon, who has gone quiet on education since he caused a stir with his proposal for merit pay for public school teachers.

And it wasn’t the Fraser Institute, which is about to release its latest rank-ings based on foundation skills assess-ment (FSA) tests in B.C. schools.

It was U.S. President Barack Obama, in his state of the union address. He was talking about Race to the Top, a federal bonus program he called “the most mean-ingful reform of our public schools in a generation.

“To all 50 states, we said, ‘If you show us the most innovative plans to improve teacher quality and student achievement, we’ll show you the money.’”

B.C., meanwhile, is going backwards. After years of B.C. Teachers’ Federation sabotage of skills testing, the essential mechanism for any improvement in education techniques, the B.C. Principals’ and Vice-Principals’ Association abruptly surrendered a couple of weeks ago.

The tests aren’t fl awed, association president Jameel Aziz admitted, but they have been “successfully undermined” by the BCTF.

Aziz listed three reasons for abandon-ing FSA tests. Two of them are factually wrong.

He claimed that after years of BCTF disruption tactics, participation has fallen below 50 per cent in some districts.

Ministry records show the lowest par-ticipation was 62 per cent, last year in the Vancouver school district. The provincial average was 83 per cent, despite letters sent home by teacher union locals telling parents the tests are bad and suggesting they fi nd some excuse for their kids to skip them.

Aziz also blamed the Fraser Institute for its “misuse” of FSA data that “does not refl ect the many unique challenges faced by individual schools, nor does it credit the many unique successes of individual

schools.”Wrong again, says Peter Cowley, the

Fraser Institute’s director of school per-formance studies. He notes that the rank-ings track local factors such as parental income and the proportion of English as a second language or special needs.

“We’re hunting for schools that have shown that they are actually improving,”

as well as those that are slipping, Cowley said.

Critics like to set up a straw man by comparing schools in rich urban areas with poor, remote schools. That’s “mis-use,” designed to discredit the rankings and the tests.

Parents should start by looking at the performance of their own school over fi ve

years. Is it getting better or worse? Rural parents can look at similar regions of B.C.and see if comparable schools are doing better. All parents can ask what extra helptheir children are getting to improve theirindividual areas of weakness.

Aziz claimed that “some in govern-ment” have suggested FSA tests be replaced. Well, rookie cabinet minister Moira Stilwell has. For a more informed view, here’s Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid in an open letter to parents:

“The push by the BCTF to end the FSAs is political. It’s about hiding information you, as parents, have a right to know about your child’s education and future.”

Leadership candidate George Abbott made vague noises about supplementing FSA tests. Here is one change he could consider.

The tests measure reading, writing and arithmetic skills at Grades 4 and 7. They track the individual student’s per-formance, as well as that of the team of teachers he or she has had to that point.

Additional measurements could give a clearer picture of the performance of each teacher. Then Falcon’s merit pay ideacould be implemented.

The shocking story of 100 sled dogs being shot execution-style after the Olympic Games in Whistler last year is attracting world-wide attention.

Indeed, this was an outrageously repre-hensible act, particularly since it appears it was economically motivated. The bottom had dropped out of the tourist dog-sledding busi-ness after the Games.

Yet as appalling as this case is, people should fi nd the following information even more shocking.

In 2009, the BCSPCA conducted 5,870 cruelty investigations; removed 1,332 animals from dangerous or neglectful situations, and rescued an additional 3,443 injured animals; executed 133 warrants; and submitted 62 charges of animal cruelty and neglect to Crown.

The amount of government funding the BCSPCA received to undertake this crucial work, which comprised $2 million of the organization’s $25-million budget? Not a cent.

The BCSPCA is the only animal welfare agency in the province authorized to conduct animal cruelty investigations, and is offi -

cially responsible for protecting and rescuing animals.

It does so almost entirely via charity – pub-lic and private donations.

That tells you the importance successive governments have placed upon animal wel-fare. It doesn’t warrant a sorry penny.

Animal cruelty laws in B.C. were strength-ened in 2008, yet penalties remain light, with a maximum fi ne of $5,000. That’s if Crown takes the case at all. Only about 50 per cent of charges submitted are approved.

Hopefully, justice will be brought to bear against the perpetrator of the sled dog slaughter.

But more importantly, we hope this case will bring public and political attention and anger upon the government’s neglect of the BCSPCA. The greatest good to come from all of this would be consistent, adequate funding of the organization responsible for animal welfare, further toughening of cruelty laws, and more legislation reform to make prosecu-tion and conviction easier.

That would be a worthy legacy for those 100 dogs.

Get rid of recall nonsenseWe should get rid of

(MLA) recall (legisla-tion).

It is very bad for our political system, a waste of time, a waste of money and an unproductive distrac-tion for those repre-sentatives who govern our province.

When we, the voters go to the polls to elect

our representatives, we vote for the party that the candidates are standing for.

Recalling the elected candidate is not fair to the party that we supported with our votes.

In all fairness, even if an MLA is recalled, their party should have the right to appoint a replace-ment MLA, to serve the party until the next regular election.

After all, it is not the party’s fault that one or two of their faithful may be deemed unfit by their constituents.

Should any of these a n t i - g o v e r n m e n t recall campaigns actually succeed, our premier should be given the opportu-nity to appoint a good person of his or her choosing to fill the void until the next election.

This is the only way

that our duly elected representative, party government can properly continue to govern the people of British Columbia, who elected them.

Let’s all get behind our party, get rid of this recall nonsense, and carry on with the business of running the province as it should be run, by the party we elected.

Push traffic to 16th Avenue, not Zero

I am writing in re-sponse to an editorial written in the Langley Times, titled “Reckless truck drivers.”

Distasteful and insen-sitive is all I can say in regards to the author using the tragic death in a horrific crash on 16th Avenue to further questionable efforts to open Zero Avenue up to high speed traffic.

Suggesting the traf-fic controls on Zero Avenue were some-how responsible for the tragedy and call-ing for the removal of the speed humps on the Langley section of Zero Avenue is a real headshaker.

The author, instead of pushing TransLink, the City of Surrey, the Township of Langley and the City of Abbotsford, to ex-pand the capacity of 16th Avenue in order to deal with heavy re-gional traffic, contin-ues to push for moving that traffic southward to Zero Avenue.

What’s the story here? Why the push for Zero Avenue, a rural road which is designat-ed a township cycling route, and at one time part of a horse trail network, and should really only be serving the local traffic, to be-come a high speed ex-pressway?

To alleviate the frustration of self-important commuters from Abbotsford and Chilliwack, at the ex-pense of residents and other users of Zero Avenue?

Sentenced for drugs, weapons Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

An Abbotsford man who was charged with more than 20 drug and weapon offences in 2006 has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for four of them.

Bhupinder Singh Jatana, 32, was convicted earlier this month of possession for the purpose of trafficking, posses-sion of a controlled substance, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a restricted firearm.

He was sentenced Friday in Chilliwack Supreme Court. The remaining charges were

stayed.Jatana was arrested in

August 2006 after police served a search warrant at a home in the 33500 block of Rainbow Avenue in Abbotsford.

He was sleeping at the time and was found with a loaded handgun under his pillow.

Police seized approximately $10,000 in cash, as well as cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Other items they located included four handguns that were loaded or had loaded magazines next to them, two machine guns with ammuni-tion, two silencers, two rifles,

gun parts for other automaticweapons, a Taser, and bodyarmour.

Police also found evidence ofa marijuana grow operation.

At the time, police said theybelieved the home was a “fullyoperational drug supply cen-tre” that was connected to alarger criminal organization, although they didn’t namewhich one.

Jatana was charged withfour drug offences and 19weapons-related crimes, mostly related to unauthor-ized possession of a firearmand contravention of storageregulations.

Clearbrook hit-and-run driver sought by police

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

Abbotsford Police are look-ing for the driver of a car that struck a 73-year-old male pedestrian and then fled the scene on Tuesday afternoon.

The Abbotsford man was using a crosswalk to head east across Clearbrook Road at Hillcrest Avenue. Const. Ian MacDonald said the walk signal was illuminated when a beige or light-brown sedan turned south (left) from Hillcrest onto Clearbrook and hit the man.

He said the impact flung the man about 25 feet through the

air. He rolled from the bumper to the hood and over the wind-shield.

The driver sped from the scene and continued south on Clearbrook Road, MacDonald said.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital for non-life-threaten-ing injuries, which included bruising, numerous scrapes, possible soft-tissue damage and cuts to his head that required stitches,

MacDonald said the vehicle likely would have sustained damage to the front quarter panel, hood and windshield.

“We think someone is going to know about this person

or see fresh damage to their vehicle.”

Several witnesses at the scene have spoken to police. Anyone with further information is asked to call the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

This is the second pedestri-an-related accident this year in Abbotsford. On the evening of Jan. 1, a 17-year-old boy was struck while crossing Old Clayburn Road and was taken to hospital.

Last year, there were eight fatalities involving pedes-trians, as well as one with a cyclist and another with a longboarder.

Local investigators recommend Mountie be charged

Abbotsford Police have completed their report to Crown counsel regarding the alleged use of excessive force involving a Kelowna RCMP officer.

The report includes the recommendation that Const. Geoff Mantler be charged with assault causing bodily harm stem-ming from an incident on Jan. 7 involving Buddy Tavares. A news reporter filmed Tavares being kicked in the head during an arrest.

Crown counsel will now review the report, and it can often take weeks or months for charges to be approved.

Passes revoked for sex offenderVikki HOPESAbbotsford News

The National Parole Board (NPB) has suspended the unescorted tem-porary absences (UTAs) it had ap-proved for an Abbotsford sex of-fender last May.

According to NPB documents, James Douglas Campbell, 59, breached a condition that he ab-stain from alcohol. He was out of prison on a UTA on Sept. 9, when a parole officer who was checking up on him at an undisclosed location smelled alcohol on his breath.

Police were called to the scene, and a breath sample confirmed that Campbell’s blood alcohol level was 0.018. He was then returned to the minimum-security jail and was later transferred to a medium-security prison.

The NPB held a hearing and the decision was made on Jan. 13 to re-voke Campbell’s passes. When they were first approved, he was permit-ted up to three 12-hour visits over the first two months at the home of his wife.

The length of the visits progressed to two 24-hour periods during the third and fourth months, and 72 hours per month after that.

At the NPB hearing, Campbell’s case management team recom-mended his passes be revoked be-cause his alcohol consumption was “indicative of an increase in (his) risk to public safety.”

Campbell is currently serving a 24-year sentence which began Dec. 3, 1990 for sexual offences against three girls – ages 12, nine and seven. He abducted one of them off the street while she was on her way to school.

His statutory release date is May 11, 2011. Under federal law, most inmates must be released after serv-ing two-thirds of their sentences, but they can be granted day or full parole before that.

In 2004, Campbell went on the lam from an Abbotsford home while on day parole. He was later arrested in Falkland in the Okanagan after he had broken into several cabins to steal food.

His parole was revoked, and Campbell’s request for day and full parole were denied in July 2008.

At the time Campbell’s UTAs were granted in May 2010, the son of Campbell’s 89-year-old wife ex-pressed concern about his mom’s safety. The couple were married in March 2010.

Inspection puts tenant in tears,

no grow-op foundNeil CORBETTAbbotsford News

The controversial issue of grow-op busting public safety inspection teams hit home for young mother Amy Keer last Thursday.

On Wednesday (Jan. 26), a city bylaw enforcement officer informed Keer, who is eight months preg-nant and has two children aged two and four, that her home would be inspected. It was flagged because of high electrical and water usage, she was told.

She informed the property manage-ment company which rents her the house on James Street. They sent over a plumber and an electrician, who did not find any faults. Keer checked her hydro bill, and it does not reflect high usage.

The inspection team included four Abbotsford Police cars and six officers,

who first searched the residence. They were followed by a city bylaw officer, building inspector and fire prevention officer, who conduct-ed their inspections.

Keer said it was embarrassing to have neighbours see the strong police presence at her house. She was in tears throughout the search.

“They shouldn’t be able to come into my house like that,” she told The News.

It lasted about 15 minutes, Nothing was found and she faces no inspection fee.

Keer asked what prompted the search, and the bylaw offi-cer said high water usage. She asked if she could see the paperwork reflecting that, and was told she would have to obtain it from city hall.

She called the search a “waste of time, and a waste of tax dollars.”

City manager of bylaw enforcement Gordon Ferguson would not discuss specifics of any search by the team.

With a legal chal-lenge being broughtagainst Mission’sinspection team,Ferguson recentlyreviewed the activi-ties of the Abbotsfordgroup with TheNews.

He said then that theteam had been scaledback, and mostly con-ducted its work afterAbbotsford Policehad busted a grow-op,inspecting the housefor safety faults, putting a notice onthe property title, and levying $4,500 ininspection fees.

Ferguson con-firmed the teamwill still conduct aminimal number ofsearches based onhigh hydro readings, high water usage, condensation on win-dows, public tips orother evidence.

He said a tenantwould not be givendocuments showinghigh water readings, but a property ownercould obtain them.

Ferguson said theinspections are usu-ally not emotionallyupsetting enough tohave people in tears.

“We don’t force ourway in,” he said.

Amy Keer’s home was inspected partly due to highwater usage.

Yale Secondary Musical Theatre pays tribute to the

king of rock ‘n’ roll in its upcoming production of All Shook Up!

The 1950s jukebox musical by Joe Dipietro is based on William Shake-speare’s Twelfth Night. It follows the comedic love triangle of a small-town girl who disguises herself as a man to get close to the guy she loves.

The show is inspired by the music of Elvis Presley

and features more than two dozen hits including Don’t Be Cruel, Teddy Bear, Hound Dog and the title song All Shook Up.

“There’s lots of hilarity, missed opportunities, apprehension and mis-guided tries at the wrong person,” said show direc-tor Willis Taylor. “Expect high energy and lots of great music.”

All Shook Up! involves 60 cast and crew members. A series of record platters at varying heights set the stage, while poodle skirts, rolled-up jeans, leather

jackets and slick hair pay tribute to the era.

The show opens at the Abbey Arts Centre on Sunday (Feb. 6) at 2:30 p.m. Performances also run Feb. 10-12 at 7:30 p.m., with additional school matinees on Feb. 7 and Feb. 8 at 10:30 a.m. Rock band The Authorities will perform a 30-minute pre-show.

Tickets are $15 at the Yale Secondary School offi ce, or at the box offi ce at Abbey Arts Centre before the show.

For more information, call 604-853-0778.

Theatre students at Yale Secondary rehearse a musical number from the play All Shook Up! The production, which opens Feb. 6 at the Abbey Arts Centre, mixes Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night with the songs of Elvis Presley.

Chorus sings to help teens

Carol AUNBlack Press

Canadian rock band Finger Eleven kickedoff its one-month tour across the country inJanuary.

The band is in Alberta now, promoting itsnewest album, but the members are slowlymaking their way to B.C. and will be perform-ing at Mission’s Clarke Theatre on Feb. 9.

Rick Jackett, the band’s rhythm guitaristsays he’s excited about touring the country.

“We haven’t done a real Canadian tour in along time,” he said. “For us to play in this manycities across Canada is exciting.”

From Jan. 14 to Feb. 15, Finger Eleven is play-ing 23 cities from Ontario to B.C.

Jackett’s favourite part of touring is theshows and this time, he notes, the productionlevel is being bumped up and the stage setupand lighting is sure to impress. The band ispromoting Life Turns Electric (released inOctober 2010), and will be playing songs fromthat album, but they will also dive into oldertunes.

The band’s new album features hits likeWhatever Doesn’t Kill Me and Living in aDream. Jackett’s favourite is Love’s What YouLeft Me With, but he admits that changes fromtime to time.

It’s taken the band about a year and a half toput the album together and they will tour foranother 18 months to promote it.

It’s fun writing songs and music at home, butit’s just as easy to “get on a luxury bus withyour buddies and play video games,” said the36-year-old Jackett, who has been playing gui-tar since he was 16 years old.

Finger Eleven, made up of Scott Anderson,James Black, Sean Anderson, Rich Beddoe andJackett, have been together for more than 20years.

Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster loca-tions or at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. withthe show starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Abbotsford Men’s Chorus will perform a concert on Feb. 18 at the South Abbotsford Church at 7 p.m.

The concert is free to attend, but donations are encouraged with all proceeds supporting BC Teen Challenge’s women’s centre.

BC Teen Challenge is a faith-based residential program, assisting young

men and women, ages 19 and over, with overcoming addiction and sub-stance abuse.

Started in 1958, the organization is affiliated with Global Teen Challenge. It has more than 1000 centers, support-ing people in 80 countries. Currently, there are three facilities serving B.C.

The Abbotsford Men’s Chorus

has over 60 members and performs throughout the year to raise money for various community groups. None of the profits are retained by the choir and instead support local organiza-tions.

Artsin Brief

SportsIn Brief

Triumphant returnNeil CORBETTAbbotsford News

The Abbotsford Rugby Club started prov-ing right away that they belong in Premier League rugby.

On the opening day of the B.C. Premier League, the club went to Victoria to take on the Velox Valhalians in their first top-flight match in three-and-a-half seasons, and upset the home team 15-8.

Kurtis Appeldoorn got Abby’s first try, slashing through defenders over a 50-yard sprint. Early in the second half hooker Some Mosogau scored the winning try on a short rumble. Chris Gilding kicked a convert and hit a penalty kick.

Appeldoorn was selected man of the match for the Abbotsford backs, and Jeremy Swaan for the forwards.

The victory over a mid-standings team was a confidence boost for the Abbotsford Club, which was promoted to the Premiership based on first-half play.

“We’ve been working and building as a club for a couple of years to get to this point,” said past president Ryan McWhinney.

The game was played on a wet field, so the burly forwards had to be on their game, and they were, both controlling the ball and play-ing good defence.

The match marked the return of former international player Scott Hunter, who re-turned from a knee injury.

“It was really good to have him back in the pack,” said McWhinney.

The first division team had a 15-0 lead, but injuries and penalties turned the momentum against them, and they lost 19-15 to Velox.

Trent Bourke and Jordan Tait-Comis both

scored tries, and the latter also hit a convert and a penalty kick.

Graeme MacRury was man of the match for the backs, and Jake Buskell for the forwards.

The third division team lost to the Scribes 10-8. Kyle Peters scored the Abbotsford try, while Darwin Guevara hit a penalty kick. He was man of the match for the backs, and Mike Poitras for the forwards.

All three teams are back in action this weekend at Exhibition Park, as the premier and first division teams will take on a UVic team that is a feeder system to the national team, with some of the country’s top young talents.

The third division team plays Chilliwack at 11:30 a.m., the first division team takes on UVic at 1 p.m. and the Premier game against UVic goes at 2:45 p.m.

The women’s team is at Cowichan.

Close to 35,000 people came to Tradex to check out the Vancouver Motorcycle Show.

JOHN VAN PUTTEN Abbotsford News

The numbers are in for the Vancouver Motorcycle Show, which continues to hold on to its reputation as one of the largest and most well attended motorcycle events in Canada. Almost 35,000 people walked through the doors of Tradex between Jan. 20-23.

Despite snow and rain throughout the show, atten-dance was up. Both Thursday and Friday topped 2010 num-bers, while Saturday saw the strongest single day turnout in recent years.

“It is very encouraging for the industry to see strong attendance numbers again this year,” said show manager Nanette Jacques.

“With the combination of our themed nights, Custom

Alley and a new and improved stunt team the show truly offers something for every kind of bike enthusiast.”

Andrea Mori, of Delta, took home a brand-new Yamaha Fazer as part of the grand prize contest.
