Message Stick: Pemulwuy Part 2

Sunday, 16 May 2010

Pemulwuy: A War of Two Laws is a two-part documentary series that explores the life of Pemulwuy, an Aboriginal warrior who led a 12-year guerrilla war of payback against the soldiers and settlers of the British colony at Sydney Cove who stole land, food resources, and abducted and killed Bidgigal women. Through re-enactment this documentary brings to life a character, who until now, has never been acknowledged let alone celebrated in Australian colonial history. With Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal expert voices this story reconciles the contention between the oral and written history of the early European settlement.

Pemulwuy was decapitated after he was finally killed in 1802, and his head was preserved in spirits and sent to England. On his recent visit to Australia, Prince William was lobbied by members of the Aboriginal community of Redfern for the repatriation of Pemulwuy’s remains. The Prince’s office has since responded to one of Redfern’s community leaders, Mick Mundine, in a letter in which His Royal Highness vowed to do all that he could to investigate the circumstances surrounding the missing head. The letter also noted that the Prince was profoundly impressed by the determination of the Aboriginal elders he met that day in Redfern, in their quest to right the wrongs done to this famous warrior in death, and to afford his mortal remains a proper burial.

The story raises the notion of bringing the legendary status Pemulwuy already holds amongst Aboriginal people to a wider Australian audience and to acknowledge him in the same way as other classic figures of Australian history, such as Ned Kelly.

Foyle's War: Killing Time

Sunday, 16 May 2010

The war might have ended, but Hastings is at the centre of mounting racial tensions. The white GIs are being shipped back home leaving the Black GIs on the US base, with time to kill until transport becomes available to take them home. DCS Foyle (Michael Kitchen) is called to a civic meeting to discuss the possibility of imposing a colour bar to protect the locals from the growing troubles, a policy he is far from happy about.

Meanwhile, Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks) has become the new Assistant Manager of Hill House, a dilapidated local guest house. She is now working with kindred spirit, Adam Wainwright (Max Brown), whom she met in the previous episode. They are both pretty hopeless at running the guest house, but muddle through as best they can as their friendship deepens. Mandy Dean (Charlotte Riley) is one of the residents: disowned by her family, she is a young, vulnerable new mother going it alone because of the racial prejudices levelled against her and her mixed race baby. The father is a black GI. Mandy’s life becomes more complicated when her ex-boyfriend, conscientious objector Tommy Duggan (Sam Spruell), returns home and hopes to win her back.

When Mandy’s body is discovered on the US army base, racial tensions reach boiling point and the finger of blame is swiftly pointed at her army sweetheart, Gabe Kelly (Obi Abili). Foyle begins to investigate but is not convinced that Gabe could be capable of such a brutal crime. It is not long before Foyle finds himself going head to head against the US army and all of its might.

Time Team

Tuesday, 18 May 2010 New Series

From delving into early Christian history at the heart of Westminster Abbey to unearthing an entire Roman town in Wiltshire, the Team's unrelenting pursuit of all things archaeological takes them the length and breadth of the UK in the most exciting series to date.

In episode one Professor Mick Aston and the team investigate one of Britain’s greatest historic landmarks - among the most famous sites Time Team has ever been invited to - Westminster Abbey. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of Parliament Square, the archaeologists have three days to pin down the location of a lost sacristy. It’s believed to be a stronghold built by Henry III almost 800 years ago and said to have housed the biggest collection of treasure this side of the Alps.

Under the watchful eye of the Abbey’s clergy and thousands of tourists the diggers’ attempts to find this important building are continually thwarted by the driving London rain and centuries of later building work. Surprisingly, by the 18th century, a whole row of houses and workshops had been built right up against the Abbey!

But the team eventually pick through the later buildings to discover their medieval target, only to find out it wasn’t what everyone expected. Over three days the team redraw the plan of the magnificent building constructed by Henry III and find tantalising evidence of an even earlier religious settlement - a pair of beautifully preserved thousand-year-old burials just a metre below the Abbey verge.

Grand Designs Revisited: Waterloo

Thursday, 20 May 2010

This week Kevin McCloud revisits a couple who converted an old violin factory into a luxury home, but a battle with their neighbours over a jointly-owned wall threatened to ruin the build.

Building your own home can be a real struggle at the best of times. Louise and Milko Ostendorf spent 2 1/2 years converting an old building in Waterloo into a luxury penthouse, and ended up with a real battle on their hands.

When Louise and Milko bought the building, they had no idea they would have on-going, heated negotiations with their neighbours, the London Festival Orchestra.

During construction, fierce fighting broke out over a party wall. A year after Louise and Milko moved into their luxury retreat, the battle of Waterloo continued.

Three and a half years on, Kevin revisits the site to see if the offending wall has to go or if it can stay.

Voyage To The Planets

Thursday, 20 May 2010

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to leave Earth?

To gaze back at the receding blue gem that is our home planet and go where no human has gone before? What strange sights await you? What dangers must you avoid? With five decades of space exploration behind us, we can now begin to answer these questions.

Blast-off with Voyage To The Planets: an Australian made documentary series exploring the pleasures and pitfalls of travel to the alien planets of our own solar system.

Narrated by Richard Roxburgh, this series visits the planets from a very personal perspective: that of the people who have sent probes hurtling to strange worlds, and also from the viewpoint of any one of us who might dream of making a trip ourselves.

The series is styled in the guise of a visual guidebook, tapping into the mystery and intrigue of space exploration while providing the sort of practical information required by anyone who might like to imagine actually going there. Think of it as a kind of handbook for our cosmic neighbourhood. Voyage To The Planets recaptures the sense of wonder and romance that was so palpable during the early years of the exploration of the Moon and the planets beyond.

With a renewed push to propel humans into the heavens and the last three decades of unmanned interplanetary missions behind us, we now have the legitimacy to look deeply into the solar system to explore what our planetary neighbours offer in terms of destinations for human exploration and discovery. As dawn breaks on a new age of manned space flight, Voyage To The Planets offers a ringside seat to the splendours of the solar system: an astronaut’s guide to whole new worlds of possibility.

The American Future: A History By Simon Schama: American Plenty

Thursday, 20 May 2010 New Series

After 9/11, Katrina and Baghdad, the robustness of American optimism is struggling to reassert itself against the sobering reality of military frustration and domestic anxieties. This is an America grappling with an un-American sense of its own limits.

Eminent historian Simon Schama turns to fascinating moments in American history to understand the present. In the first episode of the series he explores how American optimism about the infinite possibilities of its land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt. Nowhere is this more evident than the American West, which has always been a symbol of opportunity and freedom. Oil at $4 a gallon may be dominating the headlines, but here it’s the lack of water that’s an even bigger threat to the American future. The West is in the grip of a nine-year drought.

America’s optimism about its natural resources has always been spiced with clashes over conservation, going back to the first man to navigate the Colorado River, John Wesley Powell. American ingenuity made farming on an industrial scale possible in the early years of the 20th century but at the cost of making Oklahoma a dustbowl. The building of the Hoover Dam, a modern American miracle, which provided essential irrigation for farming and for the new city of Las Vegas, now no longer supplies enough water for both.

In 1980, Ronald Reagan’s optimism about American plenty defeated Jimmy Carter’s campaign for self-restraint but in the 2008 election, neither candidate could ignore the challenges facing America as it enters an era of limits.

Waking The Dead: Yahrzeit

Friday, 21 May 2010 Final

Det. Supt. Boyd is anonymously sent a Nazi SS dagger which sparks an investigation into the unsolved murder of a young Jewish girl in London in 1945. The last person to look at the cold case file was his old colleague Mel Silver, two weeks before her death.

The dagger leads the team to a dealer who won’t disclose either the seller or the buyer. But CCTV outside his shop points them to a Polish builder who claims he found the dagger in the house he’s renovating.

Boyd’s every move is being watched by an American woman called Sarah (Michelle Forbes), who when confronted says she is working for Interpol on war crime cases, and that she’d been in touch with Mel before she died. She eventually confesses to sending the dagger, and to being in Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency.

When more Nazi paraphernalia is found on the site, Boyd sends in his forensics expert Dr Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald), and she uncovers five bodies. All except one have the same DNA as the little girl who was murdered back in 1945.

Meanwhile the owner of the house, Simon Dusniak (Nicholas Palliser), is shocked to discover that his ailing grandfather Marek, whom he visits in a nursing home, is suddenly starting to speak German.

When the dealer is found dead, and Simon’s Dusniak’s mother Abigail (Eileen Atkins), suddenly appears from her home in Panama to make the old man sign over his estate, Boyd’s team smell a rat. They confront Marek with the dagger, and clearly rattled, he manages to swallow a cyanide pill.

Eve finds a military tattoo on the dead Marek’s torso - a number that identifies him as Nazi doctor Martin Heiss, who worked for Josef Mengele in extermination camps in Poland during World War II.

What unspeakable horrors have they uncovered?

Talking Heads: Glenn Shorrock

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson’s guest is rock legend Glenn Shorrock.

Born in England in 1944, Shorrock arrived in Australia with his family a decade later, as an assisted-passage immigrant.

Obsessed with rock ‘n’ roll from a young age, Shorrock and his band, The Twilights emerged from the migrant town of Elizabeth near Adelaide in the early sixties.

The Twilights shot to national fame with hits like Needle in a Haystack, What’s Wrong with the Way I Live and Cathy Come Home. In 1966, as winners of the first Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds the group was sent to London to the Abbey Road Studios where, next door, The Beatles were recording Strawberry Fields.

But it was a decade later, as lead singer of Little River Band, that Shorrock really hit the big time. The group cracked the lucrative US market with a string of eight Top Ten hits in America and around the world. Its success was credited with opening the door for other Australian acts on the international circuit.

Since his sudden and dramatic exit from Little River Band in 1982, Shorrock has continued to enjoy enormous success as a songwriter and performer.

He’s starred in Evita, Rocky Horror Show, Grease and Shout, also alongside George Martin in All You Need is Beatles. Plus he’s performed in his own stage productions and linked up again with the original members of the Little River Band.

Photography Hijacked

Photography Hijacked, a documentary by Jack Pam (son of Max Pam), is an exploration into the process, technique and outcomes of the work of 12 unique photographers from Australia and America. The film explores the concept that individuality of process is what underwrites and makes possible all interesting artwork.

The 12 artists represent 12 different ways of looking at the contemporary medium of photography. Each photographer is given their own space and presence in the film to represent what they want to say in their own way.

The viewer is taken on a ride from the Hollywood Hills of LA, to the wheatbelt of Western Australia to the streets and lofts of New York and into the Rebel motorcycle clubhouses of Australia and beyond. The individual photographers act as a guide as they journey to capture their subject, explaining how and why they make their work.

Photographers featured are Graham Miller, Dean Karr, Shen Wei, Jennifer Juniper Stratford, Sarah Small, Toni Wilkinson, Gareth Willis, Brad Rimmer, Amy Stein, Karron Bridges, Angela Boatwright and Bill Sullivan.

The New InventorsHosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors is home to the brightest breakthroughs in technology, innovation and invention. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: futurist and author Mark Pesce, science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, and materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla. Inventions featured on the program:

PLASTERBOARD REBATE MACHINE – by inventor William Goss from VIC

When you join two pieces of plasterboard, you are laying two flat pieces of board next to each other to form a butt joint. However, these joins tend to crack over time, and no one wants to look at butt cracks all day long. Walls and ceilings come in many different shapes and sizes, but plasterboard does not.

The Plasterboard Rebate Machine is unfortunately not a tax break, but it is a rather handy invention. It is a power tool that allows you to create a trench or indentation - known as a rebate in the world of professional plastering - by cutting a trench in the board. The invention also incorporates a vacuum to suck away the plaster that has been cut out of the groove.

MEM – by inventor Trevor Mackle from NSW

Electromagnetic locks are used on doors all around the country. Despite their wide use, these devices have a lot of shortcomings. They are physically large, extremely heavy, and use a lot of electricity because they need to be on all the time. Trevor Mackle has been in the lock industry all his life, and he is constantly working on ways to improve the devices that keep our homes and businesses safe.

The MEM Lock is the first lock in the world that combines both electromagnetic and mechanical components. As a result it is 75% smaller and just 10% of the weight of a traditional electromagnetic lock. At the same time, the invention has 20% stronger holding power than a traditional lock and consumes just half the power, a considerable improvement in energy efficiency.

NEW WINDMILL TOWER – by inventor Russell Hall from QLD

Windmills have certainly withstood the test of time- they were first invented in the 9th century, but they still have plenty of room for improvement. When windmills are serviced they can be a pain to access and dangerous to climb. Award-winning architect Russell Hall was asked to put together a display of windmills for an exhibition. He toured rural Queensland, collecting windmill designs and talking to farmers about how they could be improved.

The New Windmill Tower combines an array of innovative design enhancements to create a better windmill design overall. Specifically tailored to improve windmill safety, and make servicing much more convenient, the design provides a safer working platform and ladder, and also positions the bore pipe, which requires regular servicing, outside the main tower structure, greatly enhancing access and convenience for windmill workers.

Catalyst

Trawl Team

The sea floor of the Southern Ocean covers a vast area stretching right around the globe – much of it is more than two kilometres down.

The mysterious benthic life – that is, what lives on the seafloor – has only recently started to be revealed. This rugged realm is home to delicate and bizarre creatures like the sea spiders, polychaete worms and ancient bamboo coral that the research team bring aboard.

Mark Horstman and cameraman Kevin May spent a month in Antarctic waters to work alongside the trawl team at the bottom of the world. While surveying protected areas, underwater cameras capture startling evidence of illegal long line fishing. Compelling proof comes when 3km of rope and rusty hooks is snared in one of the trawl nets and dragged aboard the Aurora Australis.

Megafauna

Giant Marsupials thrived in Australia for over a million years until they completely disappeared somewhere around 40,000 years ago….give or take some tens of thousands of years!

What exactly happened to the giant wombats, killer kangaroos, monstrous geese and other beasts has been the source of contentious debate. One school of thought is that the arrival of humans sealed their fate by swiftly hunting them into extinction, while others contend that other factors were to blame.

Paul Willis travels to the only archaeological dig in the country that might be able to answer this and other prehistoric mysteries.

Green Roofs

On a hot day, office workers are protected from the heat outside by power hungry, air-conditioned buildings.

Ironically, the buildings themselves contribute to the heat of the day, as clusters of the concrete and brick structures create what is known as the heat island effect.

In the first of a series of reports on the science of sustainability, Tanya Ha turns her infrared spotlight to rooftops to demonstrate the benefits of a really efficient cooling system – commonly known as the garden!
