Issue 4, June 2019 Aberfoyle Park High School Page 1 Issue 1, Februar19Issue 9 FROM THE PRINCIPAL MARION COADY As we approach the end of term 2, it is an opportunity for students in year 8 to 12 to reflect on their achievements. The impending reports, which will be sent home on 5 July provide a stimulus for students to consider: are my achievements reflective of my efforts? what have I done well? what do I need to improve? who can I seek support from to improve? At Aberfoyle Park High, we have a number of strategies in place to support our students which extend beyond the classroom. This includes our senior school year 10 to 12 students being able to get assistance from teachers through the After School Learning Hub which happens on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3.30pm-4.30pm. For our middle school students we have after school support in the glass classroom on Tuesdays from 2.30pm-4.00pm. These two opportunities are designed to ensure our students are able to improve their capacity to undertake their learning through individual and small group support. In addition, Mr Nisan Tuazon provides support for mathematics and science a number of lunch times each week. Our next Student Free Day is Monday 22 July. Staff will be trained in the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC). This training is designed to ensure that our students are educated in keeping themselves safe. There are four focus areas that connect the KS:CPC together across Reception to year 12 including: the right to be safe relationships recognising and reporting abuse protective strategies There are different aspects of the KS:CPC which will be relating to our year 8 and 9 students and our year 10 to 12 students. The training is a precursor to our final Student Free Day on Tuesday 2 September when our year level teams of teachers will be involved in developing a new program that we will commence in 2020 - Wellbeing for Learning. This program will be for all students across our school. However, in each year level the program will cover aspects pertinent to the age and stage of our student’s development. As a school, we want our students to develop the capabilities and dispositions that will enable them to navigate through their education and beyond schooling. Our commitment to support our students and families to develop wellbeing has seen the school providing access online, through our school’s website SchoolTV. Our Assistant Principal, Cassie Dickeson provides parents and caregivers with information about each month’s new resources that are available. In order to assist families with planning for the end of school year, the following decisions have been made:

• year 10 students will have lessons until Friday 6 December

• year 8 and 9 students will have lessons until Tuesday 10 December. A curriculum based program will occur

from 11-13 December for all year 8 and 9 students

• year 11 students will have lessons until Friday 29 November

As the winter months have occurred, there is an increase in incidents of student absences. We ask that parents and caregivers provide us with reasons for student absences so that we can code them appropriately. The school can be notified by sending an email to the Care Group teacher, telephoning 8270-4455 (select 1) or emailing Student Services on [email protected].

This term I have been privileged to see many of the Performing Arts performances in dance, drama and music. It has been a busy term with the Year 8 Performance Night, St Augustines Church Concert, Band Night, the drama group’s The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon and the dance showcase Let’s Dance. It is one of the joys to watch how groups of our students work together to stage performances. They consistently demonstrate commitment, teamwork and care for each other.

This week we are looking forward to celebrating with our year 12 students and their partners at the year 12 Formal. I have no doubt that our current students will continue to receive very positive comments about the high standard of their behaviour as I have been informed in previous years.

A team of leaders and teachers from Kamnoetvidya Science Academy School (KVIS) in Thailand visited our school on 13 June. The team includes Dr Rachain Kosanlavit (the Principal of KVIS), Dr Christopher Smith (KVIS chemistry teacher and a native of South Australia), Dr Phornsant Lertwitthayawiwat and Associate Professor Dr Thanit Pewnim. This connection follows our visit to the Singapore International Science Challenge earlier in the year.

END OF TERM 2 AND SEMESTER 1 REPORT DISTRIBUTION End of Term 2 The last day of term 2 is Friday 5 July. Students will be dismissed at 2.15pm. School bus times will be adjusted to accommodate this early dismissal. Adelaide Metro public transport buses will run as per their regular published timetables. The first day of term 3 for students is Tuesday 23 July. A student free day is scheduled for Monday 22 July. Have a happy and safe holiday and we look forward to seeing you for the first day of term 3.

Semester 1 Student Achievement Summary (Report) Distribution Semester 1 Student Achievement Summaries (Reports) providing an overview of student’s progress, including grades, will be distributed via students on the last day of term 2, Friday 5 July and available on Daymap from the first day of term 3. Once you have had the chance to review your child’s report, please direct any questions or concerns to the subject teacher.

Course Counselling and Subject Selection for 2020 The important process of course counselling and subject selection for 2020 will happen during term 3 for all current year 8 to 11 students.

It is important that students are thinking about their study, education and career pathways as families will soon be making important decisions about what will be studied next year. Many parents and caregivers are already discussing their child’s:

• short and long term goals • interests and aspirations – both in and beyond school including further study or careers • strengths as a student and as members of families and communities • skills and abilities that can be developed

It is important to think about a range of possibilities. There are many options, opportunities and pathways to achieving success.

Therefore, the time is right to begin considering where your child wants to go, and a variety of ways to get there. Further information about the specific course counselling process for each year level will be sent home with student reports on the last day of term 2, Friday 5 July. Please also keep an eye out for more details in future newsletters, on our school website and via email. Meanwhile, please start and continue those very important discussions with your children and young people.

Key upcoming course counselling events to plan for:

• term 2, week 10, Friday 5 July: Course Counselling information letter distributed with semester 1 reports • term 3, week 1: 2020 Curriculum Handbook available online via the school website at

http://www.aphs.sa.edu.au/web/node/15 After Course Counselling, decisions will be made about which subjects will run based on the number of students who have selected them. We then use a re-counselling process to ensure that every student has a suitable full program for 2020.

To support students through the course counselling and 2020 subject selection process, information assemblies and parent information evenings will be held during early term 3. Specific details will be communicated in the letter sent home with student reports.

If you have any questions in regards to course counselling please contact:

ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY OPEN DAY Students from Aberfoyle Park High School visited Adelaide University for their ‘Arts@Adelaide Showcase’ on the 16 May. Throughout the day, students took part in two workshops, a tour of the University and listened to a criminology session.

One of our lucky students, Yashika won a brand new iPad in the raffle that was drawn during the day. This was an excellent event for our students to attend which gave the students a glimpse at university life and the courses on offer relating to the arts.

We look forward to taking another group of students next year.

MITCHAM ORCHESTRA Tahlia recently performed a stunning solo with the Mitcham Orchestra on 26 May where she performed the ‘Concertino for Flute and Orchestra’ by Cecile Chaminade.

Tahlia won the Mitcham Orchestra/Rotary Award in 2018 and as a part of the award was given the opportunity to perform with the Orchestra which was community founded in 1988 and rehearses every Saturday afternoon.

This was a great opportunity for Tahlia to perform with the orchestra and a great experience for the members to perform with such an amazing young musician. Well done Tahlia on a fantastic performance and your award.

Despite playing against experienced opposition, both boys and girls teams played competitive volleyball winning several points in all games, displaying moments of brilliance based on teamwork and communication, and proudly displayed our school values throughout the day.

All students should be delighted with their efforts and the way they positively represented our school.

5-ASIDE SOCCER Congratulations to our soccer teams for participating in the 5-aside soccer on Friday 17 May at Reynella East High School. The results were outstanding as we have so much talent here at Aberfoyle Park High School.

The Open Knock Out boys won the division; the Open Zone Boys came third and fifth and the Open Girls came seventh.

Thank you to the students that participated and conducted themselves with our school values respecting and supporting each other, it was a pleasure to be a part of. Thanks also to Leonid, Spencer and Chei who were our representatives as referees for the day and did an outstanding job. Simon Bell (teacher) and Ben Bowden (pre-service teacher) assisted the teams with training, sharing knowledge and experience of the game.

RACHELLE DE FAZIO TEACHER

“As coaches, we are so proud of how the girls went. From their first training, where some of them had very little experience, to winning a game at the tournament. All the girls tried their very best and it definitely showed. They did so well and we presented some tough competition. It was great to see them improve and form new friendships with each other. Overall it was a great tournament.” - Hayley and Isabelle

5-ASIDE SOCCER – STATE FINALS After winning the Southern Regional Round-Robin competition, the year 8/9 Boys 5-aside soccer team played in the State finals on Thursday 13 June. They finished second in their pool with 3 wins, a draw and a loss then played the number 1 team from pool A in the semi-final. They played an absolute belter to win 4-1!! Everything came together and it was a pleasure to watch. In the final they gave it their all however were a fraction off the pace and came off second best in a 4-0 result. Parafield Gardens played really well and deserved to win. I was very proud of our boys for the way they conducted themselves throughout the tournaments. Many thanks to Leigh Rayner for much of the behind the scenes preparation and also to former student Kyle Theodorolaukas, now Italian C-League Soccer player of 3 years, for assisting in the match play and some training sessions.

OPEN BOYS KNOCK OUT SOCCER

A great result from a consistent and committed whole team effort to defeat Hallett Cove 3-1 on Monday, 3 June. The team held off some spirited attacks in the first half when they were with the wind with solid defence and overall team contribution. In the second half the team used the wind to advantage and with some strategic change to our set up, saw us open the field up and score with some great one-on-ones with room to run! Goal scorers David Conlon 2 and Caleb Anderson 1. We now move to round 2 vs Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) scheduled in term 3 week 1. Special thanks to all students who helped out on the bench and as linesman.

Trailing 1-0 at half time and finding themselves 2-1 down with 10 minutes left, the boys displayed outstanding determination and teamwork to equalise 2-2, and with the last kick of the game score the winner to take the match 3-2! The students played a great style of soccer, remained focussed and positive when down, and displayed our school values throughout the match as recognised by the opposition coach. Congratulations to the students involved. Bring on round 2!!

THE AUSTRALIAN RED CROSS APP The Australian Red Cross has released a fantastic new app called ‘My Team’. I have spent some time trying it out and cannot praise it enough.

The app has 2 focus audiences – the user and their support team. The user can track their mood each day with a wide range of options to help put in words how they our feeling, at the same time setting and hopefully marking off goals that will positively impact their mental health (e.g. daily routine, catch up with a friend, de-stress skills).

The support team has access to this information so they can encourage and celebrate goals achieved while supporting and reaching out when it appears that the user’s mood has decreased. The app also prompts the support team to check on the user if they report a negative mood for a few days in a row.

This is a great app for not just young people but adults as well.

LATEST ADDITION TO SCHOOL TV – POSITIVE PARENTING As you know, Aberfoyle Park High School has joined forces with SchoolTV, a wellbeing resource for parents of school-aged children and young people. This month’s focus topic is about parenting, that Olympic-standard obstacle course that doesn’t come with a guidebook!

Research shows that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. There is no such thing as the perfect parent, but having access to helpful information is a great start!

This month’s edition of SchoolTV includes interviews and links to resources about topics such as:

• how parenting has changed in the last 20 years

• how parents can help build their child’s resilience, optimism and positivity

• the complexities of parenting in blended families

• parenting children who are self-harming, and

• the connection between good parenting and brain development

There are articles about parenting children at different ages and links to useful websites for further information. SchoolTV can be accessed through our website or via this link https://aphs.sa.schooltv.me/newsletter/positive-parenting

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please don’t hesitate to contact the school for further information, or seek medical or professional help.

VET - CERTIFICATE I HOSPITALITY On 21 May our Certificate I in Hospitality class A participated in our first catering event at the Aberfoyle Park Community Centre. Some of the guests who attended included volunteers who help in the community and Member of Parliament Steve Murray. The students prepared and cooked a two-course meal, which consisted of chicken lasagna and ginger slice with lemon sorbet. It was such a success that we were asked to cater for the Melbourne Cup Luncheon in November. “A lot of work went into preparing our two-course meal for the volunteers and MP Steve Murray. What I think was most important was we got to experience what our community does for us and how many years some of the volunteers have helped our community. I am very grateful for the opportunity I got to cook for the volunteers and MP Steve Murray”. - Shae “The catering event was lots of fun and a really great learning experience. I enjoyed being front of house a lot and would like to do that again sometime. I think the day was a success and the people at the event looked like they enjoyed the food just as much as we enjoyed serving them. I’m very happy that I got to experience this opportunity and can’t wait to try it again!” - Taylor

CAREER EXPO On Thursday 16 May all senior students at Aberfoyle Park High School were given the opportunity to gain information about post school options at our inaugural Career Expo. The Expo was held on school grounds in the STEM Centre. Students had the opportunity to meet and chat with Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s), University ambassadors and representatives from organisations for students and parents to ask questions and find out about career pathways and courses. With over 45 presenters attending, the goal was to include as many trade areas that are relevant for the 21st Century and in particular to Aberfoyle Park students.

Year 12 students had the opportunity during lunch time to come and visit with all the presenters and learn as much information as possible for the following year. During the afternoon lessons the remaining senior students of the school were given the opportunity to speak to presenters and learn valuable information about their choices and options for future pathways.

The evening session allowed time for parents and the community to come along and also learn about courses, future pathways and opportunities in South Australia and the local area. Thank you to those parents / caregivers and students for attending this opportunity.

The evening session was fabulous as there was well over 300 people who came to experience and discuss opportunities. The presenters feedback was very positive as many commented on the ‘community’ feel from the attendance and questions posed. Many parents also commented how the Career Expo was extremely beneficial to not only their child but for them as well. One parent stated “the opportunity to attend the Expo has helped to build links with the school and enhance the positive nature of the APHS community.“

From the attendance and feedback given from the day the staff of APHS are keen to make this an annual event. Thank you to everyone for their support and encouragement of the Career Expo. Our aim is to now make it bigger and better next year.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR STUDY TOUR IN JULY Have you ever thought about hosting an international student whilst they study at our school? Our next Study Tour from Kyoto in Japan arrives on Sunday 28 July and departs on Friday 9 August. For the duration of their visit the students stay with accredited host families which are organised through the school. The students are usually between 15 and 17 years of age. Here is a testimonial from one of our Homestay families: ‘We have been hosting international students for the past 3 years and it has been an amazing experience for everyone in the family. We found that hosting has brought us together as a family and we feel our family has grown substantially with members all over the world. For anyone thinking of hosting we say “give it a go”, you will not regret it. It is such a wonderful experience and it will enrich your lives’. The Siemensma family Host families receive a reimbursement of approximately $250 per week to cover out of pocket expenses.

!!! WE ARE CURRENTLY RECRUITING HOST FAMILIES FOR THIS STUDY TOUR !!! If you would like more information on how to apply to become an accredited host family for our Study Tours please contact Sarah Johnson, International Secretary on 8270 4455 (select option 3) or [email protected]. You can also complete the application form by clicking here and return to Sarah Johnson. Please note: All Host families are required to have a current DCSI Child-Related Screening check as part of the Accreditation process. From 1 July they will be known as a WWCC (Working with Children Check) and are free for volunteers. Existing DCSI Child-Related screenings will be valid until their expiry date but when renewed will be known as the WWCC and valid for 5 years instead of 3 years. LONG TERM INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS All of the students who commenced their programs at the beginning of the term have settled in really well. A student from France also commenced mid-term. We look forward to term 3 where we will have another 5 students joining us for their studies (2 from Germany, 1 from France and 2 from Japan). We will have 16 long term international students studying in term 3 which is a very a busy time with our Annual Study Tour from Kyoto Japan also arriving for 2 weeks.

ABERFOYLE STUDENTS SHINE AT INTERNATIONAL HISTORY BOWL AND BEE On Tuesday, 18 June Aberfoyle Park competed in the South Australian International History Bee and Bowl tournament, held at Emmaus College. The Bee is an event held for individual students while the Bowl incorporates teams of up to 6 students, with a maximum of 4 competing at one time, and the competition divided into Middle School (Year 8 and under), Junior Varsity (Year 9 and 10 students) and Varsity (Year 11+) divisions. The competitions feature comprehensive paragraph-length questions that emphasise critical thinking and knowledge of all aspects of history. The format is similar to quiz shows in that it incorporates a buzzer system.

The History Bowl was held during the first half of the evening. Aberfoyle entered a Junior Varsity team and faced stiff opposition from both Emmaus College and Cedar College. The teams took part in three rounds, at the end of which the two teams with the highest point average from each division progressed to the finals. Aberfoyle’s team, comprising Freya, Ki , Carys and Misha progressed through to the finals, before being forced to forfeit due to factors beyond our control.

The History Bee was held during the second half of the evening with Aberfoyle being represented by Bruno and again facing stiff competition from Cedar and Emmaus

colleges. The competition began with 3 preliminary rounds, after which the 4 students with the highest points in their division went through to the finals. After a nail-biting final Bruno won through, coming up with some incredible answers in the face of intense opposition.

We would like to congratulate the students for their wonderful commitment, focus and command of history, not to mention their willingness to represent the school, doing us proud in the process.
