CAPITAL WORKS UPDATE On Thursday 27 August the Minister for Education John Gardner and our local member Steve Murray came to see the progress of stage 1 of the Capital Works. If you are interested in looking at some footage of the development up to 27 August click here. Currently, all of the demolition has occurred and progress is being made in the first fix. Trenching will occur in a way to ensure student and staff safety with trenching and backfilling occurring in sections. The installation of a new substation is planned for later this year. As part of the development, hearing augmentation is required and we have been working with the architects about the solution that will suit both our current and future needs.

LOOKING TO TERM 4 AND TOWARDS 2021 As we work towards the end of term3, there is light in the tunnel for our year 12 students. The last few weeks have seen the performing arts students undertake their external assessment components in dance, drama and music. This year has seen our stage 2 students performing in front of each other or a restricted audience due to COVID-19 restrictions. We have been impressed by their commitment given that the usual large celebrations of their performances has not been able to occur this year. Year 8 students are about to undertake their last 10 week rotation in Design and Technology and the Arts.

Term 4 will see us moving towards the finalisation of 12 years of schooling for our year 12 students and our year 8 to 11 students working towards completion of their academic studies.

We are currently in the process of finalising the subjects that will occur for 2021 generated from the subject counselling and confirmation process that has just occurred.

2020 saw the introduction of the year 8 to 12 Wellbeing for Learning Program. We have gathered responses from our students at each year level to assist in the review of the program. Currently we are starting to make changes for 2021 to increase the coverage of topics that students identified as valuable and useful.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS Fran Charlton, Assistant Principal

Senior School has been a busy place so far this term, with year 12 students finalising their external investigations for most SACE Stage 2 subjects. Students are reminded to speak with their subject teacher or a member of the Senior School Team if they are struggling. Aberfoyle Park High School also has a procedure regarding submission of work, and all students need to apply for an extension if they feel they will be unable to submit their work by the due date. This has been created to support students in utilising class time and prioritising their own time to ensure work is submitted in a timely fashion.

Year 10, 11, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year IGNITE students have been discussing with their Care Group teachers, Senior School Team members, Wellbeing Leaders and parent/caregivers post school options, so they are able to successfully choose subjects in 2021 that will best support them to be successful in the SACE. Parent Information Evenings were held at the school to support this process and we thank those parents who attended these presentations.

End of year dates, times and upcoming event information will be sent home with term 3 reports. Please ensure you read these letters which will include end of year dates, SACE Stage 2 exam timetable, a SACE Stage 1 exam timetable, year 12 Graduation and Senior School Award Night and Headstart Program for year 11 and 4th Year IGNITE students.

A reminder that in order for us to best support your child, communication with your child’s Care Group teacher is the first port of call to discuss absences, concerns or issues. You can also contact one of the Senior School Team by emailing them as indicated below:

STAGE 1 BUSINESS INNOVATION Melba Chocolate Factory, Beerenberg Strawberry Farm and Hahndorf Fran Charlton, Assistant Principal & Kathryn Lamb, IGNITE

As part of the new Stage 1 Business Innovation course, students are learning about how to use a Business Model Canvas. This task was launched with a visit to Melba’s Chocolate Factory, Beerenberg Strawberry Farm and Hahndorf’s main street. Students were lucky enough to have a question and answer session with the owner of Melba’s, who discussed the impact of COVID-19 on the business, changes they made to accommodate this and history of the business. A visit to Beerenberg Strawberry Farm was followed by time spent completing various data collection tasks in nearby Hahndorf. The data collected and information gathered on this excursion will be used in creating a business model for either Melba’s or Beerenberg.

STAGE 2 HEALTH Student

For my SACE Stage 2 health-promoting action, I have created three visual representations covering the topics of mental health and wellbeing, physical and environmental factors in regards to fast food impacts on adolescents. The goal is to raise awareness on the importance of consumption, waste production and physical effects regarding fast food.

CAREER EXPO Kass Holmes, VET Leader

On Thursday 6 August Aberfoyle Park High School senior students were presented with the opportunity to gain information about post school options by attending our 2020 Career Expo. The Expo ran from midday to 3.15pm allowing students time to explore the information provided and gain knowledge.

This year the Expo was held on school grounds in the large gym. Students had the opportunity to meet and chat with Registered Training Organisations (RTO’s), University ambassadors and representatives from organisations to ask questions and find out about career pathways and courses. With 40 presenters attending the goal was to include as many areas that are relevant for the 21st Century and in particular to Aberfoyle Park students.

Year 12 students attended in lesson 4. They were able to speak with presenters and learn as much information as possible about their post school options. During the afternoon lessons the remaining senior students were given the opportunity to speak to presenters and gather information about their choices and options for future pathways.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions parents were unable to attend this year and so the opportunity was provided for all students from year 8 and 9, 1st and 2nd year IGNITE to come and learn about courses and pathways during lunch time. The gym was very busy at lunch time with a positive buzz of activity, as there were many students walking through and collecting brochures and asking

questions.

The presenters’ feedback was positive, many commenting on the ‘Community’ feel from the attendance and questions posed. They found that the students were well prepared and asked relevant and pertinent questions. Many students commented how the Career Expo was extremely beneficial in helping them learn about courses which supported them choosing subjects and pathways for 2021.

Thank you to everyone for their support and encouragement of the Career Expo and our aim is to now make it bigger and better for next year.

ART Aimee Sweet, Art Teacher

On Wednesday 12 August, 19 senior school students had the rare opportunity to participate in a full day workshop facilitated by Art Gallery SA Education Officer Thomas Readett. Students participated in a variety of drawing exercises and learned tips for drawing the human skeleton. The workshop concluded with students completing a longer drawing focusing on part or all of the skeleton with support.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATION AT APHS! Azra Rochester, Teacher

The Stage 1 Ancient Studies students conducted an archaeological excavation of the school’s sandpit for the purpose of exploring, studying, cataloguing, and recording artefacts from across several ancient societies. They were provided with the opportunity to develop their understanding, and application of archaeological techniques and procedures.

“We had to map out a grid system with string so when recording the findings, it was noticeable where it was found. Everyone had an enjoyable day which was evident when people would shout or jump up and down when they found artefacts. Even though they had to keep true to the archaeological process by digging them out with a brush and that was a long process!” - Bree

“Our class had gone to the school oval’s sandpit which had become infested with ancient artefacts overnight, ready for the Stage 1 ancient class to do an archeological dig. The ancient class started the day off by planning and setting up before our hard laboured task of discovering artefacts. The dig was to go for the whole school day but on account of the weather we had to go back to class for the final lesson. This was a very interactive and fun activity our class got to undertake. There was a plethora of artefacts with many being very small and hard to find. Then once we had finished the dig all happy with what we found” - Brady

USING THE DESIGN THINKING PROCESS TO ADDRESS COVID-19 ISSUES Kathryn Lamb, IGNITE Coordinator

During recent Economics and Business lessons 1st Year IGNITE HASS students effectively used the Design Thinking process to address a COVID-19 issue. After completing the empathy stage groups chose an aspect of the pandemic to focus on. Collected data was then used to define issues and to create a ‘how might we...?’ question. During the ideating stage a wide range of innovative ideas were generated. Groups then created prototypes for their chosen solutions. These were then pitched to students from both classes and the feedback gathered enabled improvements to be made. Prototypes developed included an app to connect separated families, a desk attachment to engage young children whilst parents work from home, a rent-a-pet service, a computer game to promote physical activity, a headset to stimulate a workplace environment, a website to promote local businesses, a device to prevent procrastination when working from home and an automated supermarket trolley to encourage social distancing. The way in which students embraced this challenge whilst demonstrating their critical and creative thinking skills was impressive.

IGNITE PEACE MACHINE PROJECT LAUNCHES Rebecca Smitran and Kathryn Lamb – IGNITE Leaders

As part of the Stage 1 Integrated Learning Ignition course, 3rd Year IGNITE students undertake a collaborative project where they need to develop a machine that aims to promote a peaceful society.

As an introduction to this project, students completed an individual inquiry task on peace, which involved two parts. The first part, aimed at extending students’ critical thinking, asked students to choose one pillar of peace, such as free flow of information, low level of corruption, good relations with neighbours and equitable distribution of resources, and then answer one inquiry-based question such as:

The second part of the task, aimed at extending students creative thinking, asked students to develop a visual metaphor for their chosen pillar. We were highly impressed with the level of creativity applied to this part of the task. See below some wonderful examples:

Adiba Fairooz (301) – Visual metaphor for Acceptance of the Rights of Others

Annmary Shinoj (302) – Visual metaphor for Good Relations with Neighbours

1. What is the significance of this pillar of peace? 2. What ethical considerations are involved in this pillar of peace? 3. Compare Australia’s success of this pillar to another country. Explain reasons why

Australia ranks better or worse. 4. In what ways is the success of this pillar measured? Examine and explain the

methodologies used.

WELLBEING Shauna Thompson, Assistant Principal, Middle School & 8-12 Wellbeing

This year has been quite challenging for many of us especially for our young people who are being overwhelmed by information relating to COVID-19 as well as the usual issues that come with adolescence.

For some it has been isolating and has caused heightened anxiety and for others it has been disappointing and confusing when events that they have been looking forward as rites of passage are restricted or cancelled.

As part of the APHS school community you have access to an invaluable resource via our website that links directly to relevant, up to date resources to support students, parents and caregivers.

This resource, School TV, can be used to support social, emotional and behavioural challenges that both our young people and parents face on a daily basis.

There are currently supporting materials on topics such as Mental Health, Cyber-safety, Transition to High School and Positive Parenting plus many more.

If you haven’t yet had the chance to explore this valuable resource please click on the following link and have a look at what is available. https://aphs.sa.schooltv.me/

WELLBEING WEEK 2020 Ali and Hannah (Student Voice Presidents)

This year’s Wellbeing Week was quite different to previous with new and changed activities to promote all sectors of student’s wellbeing. Due to COVID-19, some of our activities had to adapt and change enabling new and exciting ideas to come forward.

This year we were able to have EQHQ involved in Monday’s bracelet and badge making, a huge success in promoting equality within our school.

Tuesday was our Senior School Kahoot with the questions about our teachers proving difficult yet extremely entertaining!

Wednesday was Women’s Equality Day with EQHQ running a walk around the oval in support of the cause while lunchtime was mindfulness yoga, a new and fantastic experience for all involved.

The Staff v Student Basketball match on Thursday proved very popular with the students taking out the title yet honourable mentions to the teachers, it was extremely energetic and entertaining!

To finish the week, we had our Wellness Wall and BBQ on Friday with many students getting involved, filling the wall with all the people and things they were grateful for in their lives.

It was a great week and we hope that everyone was able to enjoy themselves and have fun as that is what Wellbeing Week is all about!

A huge thankyou to all the teachers and staff who came and supported the events, to the Student Voice Team for helping out and planning and of course to the wonderful Ms Wiedermann and Mr Jacques, we couldn’t do it without you!

NEW COMMUNITY VEGETABLE GARDEN IN HOME ECONOMICS Nic Hurcombe, Teacher

Thanks to the successful efforts of our Youth Worker Aneleise Truman the school has been able to secure a grant from the Onkaparinga Council to establish the Aberfoyle Park High School Community Garden. The garden will breathe new life into the raised garden beds outside the Home Economics Suite and, in time, be a functional kitchen garden.

Students will be able to immediately access fresh herbs and vegetables to use in their dishes across every year level and learn the importance of sustainable produce and seasonal eating in a hands on practical way. Currently we have planted a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, herbs and edible flowers in time for spring and Food Technology staff and students alike look forward to harvesting from our brand new garden to create delicious and beautiful food. Watch this space. Thanks Aneleise.

NETBALL KNOCKOUT COMPETITION AND CARNIVAL DAY Kass Holmes, VET Leader

On Thursday 30 July, 50 girls climbed aboard the bus and headed for SUNA, Morphett Vale. There were 4 teams two represented years 8/9, one year 10 and an Open team. The games for each division and competition varied in duration and the teams played many games over the day.

The competition was fierce as 11 schools were represented from the southern area. It was a very hectic and exhausting day where all students participated with excellent sportsmanship and determination. The year 10 team playing in the Open division came second overall in their competition, narrowly losing their final match.

It was a great day for all who participated, coached and spectated. All the girls demonstrated excellent team spirit and represented Aberfoyle Park High with courage and pride.

HOST A JAPANESE STUDENT IN 2021 Sarah Johnson, Senior School Reception & International Secretary Do you have a spare room? Would you like to share South Australian life with a Japanese student? We are continually recruiting new host families to participate in the International Study Tour Program by hosting Japanese high school students. Study Tours are usually for two weeks during July/August each year. During this time they will experience Australian school and family life and participate in excursions and school activities. As some students would have not visited Australia before it gives them a chance to learn a different culture, practice their English skills and live the Australian life for the duration of their visit.

Due to the current COVID-19 travel restrictions we are hoping that the next Study Tour will go ahead in July/August 2021.

For the duration of their visit the students stay with accredited host families which are organised through the school. The students are usually between 15 and 17 years of age.

Here is a testimonial from a Homestay family:

‘We have been hosting international students for the past 3 years and it has been an amazing experience for everyone in the family. We found that hosting has brought us together as a family and we feel our family has grown substantially with members all over the world. For anyone thinking of hosting we say “Give it a go”, you will not regret it. It is such a wonderful experience and it will enrich your lives’. The Siemensma family Host families receive a reimbursement of approximately $250 a week to cover out of pocket expenses such as groceries, entrance fees to tourist attractions and other expenses incurred whilst hosting a student.

If you would like more information on how to apply to become an accredited host family for future Study Tours please contact Sarah Johnson, International Secretary on 8270-4455 (select option 3) or [email protected] for an information pack.

9-A-SIDE FOOTBALL Craig Ottaway, Teacher

Aberfoyle Park High School entered a boys and girls team in the Southern Vales 9-a-side football competition hosted at South Adelaide Football Club. Our boys’ team had a fantastic day winning their five games to progress to a Grand Final. The boys lost the final by six goals which was an impressive result considering their opponent had defeated all other schools by an average of 16 goals. In one game where our school were clearly the stronger team, our students allowed the opposing students to score goals and develop their football skills with less pressure applied. The boys were gracious in victory and humble in defeat and should all be proud of the way they played the game and represented their school.

INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADOR PROGRAM The International Program at Aberfoyle Park High School would not be the same without the support of our International Ambassadors. We are very grateful for our current ambassadors and our two year 12 International Ambassador leaders.

Students from all year levels volunteer their time to be part of the International Program. This involves ‘buddying up’ with new international students when they arrive, helping them find their way around school and generally make the international students feel welcome. We are looking for new International Ambassador especially in the middle school year levels.

If you would like to apply to be an International Ambassador please contact [email protected] the International Student Program Manager.

MUSIC NEWS! Sarah Horne, Teacher

This year the annual Elder Hall Music Showcase will look a little different. But never fear students will still be showcasing their skills and knowledge, this time in a video to cherish forever.

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions on audience numbers and students on stage, the decision was made to take the showcase to the Aberfoyle Park High School Performing Arts Centre. On Wednesday week 9, students will spend the day in their various ensembles rehearsing and recording music. YEAR 9 DANCERS GO TO BOLLYWOOD! Hayley Simmons, Teacher

As part of the Australian Curriculum, students engage with Asia across their subjects. This semester in dance, we have been exploring the Bollywood dance style, a fusion of classical Indian dance with street and jazz dance elements. We have been fortunate to have two guest Bollywood artists, Mudra Trivedi of the Mudra Dance Academy and Aayush Khosla (‘Ash’), independent artist, to teach us the elements of Bollywood dance.

Students have had a great time with this energetic style and plan to present their learning at the semester 2 Dance Showcase at Hopgood Theatre, scheduled for 10 November.

STAGE 2 SACE DANCE Shauna Thompson, Assistant Principal, Middle School & 8-12 Wellbeing

Recently our Stage 2 SACE Dance students were involved in their major externally assessed component of their course.

It was a very different experience for the students due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This year we were unable to have an audience and instead of performing live the student’s performances were filmed to be sent to the SACE Board for external assessment. This external performance assessment is worth 30% of their end grade.

The Stage 2 dancers were supported by the Stage 1 dancers and spent two days at the Domain Theatre at the Marion Cultural Centre filming nine different dances including solos, duos and also an epic six minute piece based on The Handmaids Tale.

Day 1 was used to block the dances and set the lighting and then on Day 2 the videographer was there to film the performance with full lighting and costumes.

Congratulations to all of the students involved for their hard work and commitment over those two days as well as the weeks leading up to this performance. It was thrilling to see everything come together and I look forward to seeing the finished filmed production that should be available to students and families of those involved in the next few weeks.

We are hoping that the SACE students along with the rest of our dance students will be able to perform to an audience later in the year and look forward to them having that experience again in the near future.

A big thank you to the APHS Tech students and other staff members who supported with lighting, sound, transportation and supervision.
