FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Welcome to 2020 I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the new and returning students at Coolnwynpin State School. To our parents and extended families a very special welcome to our Coolnwynpin State School community.

I have really missed this place!

I have been so impressed by the responsible behaviour and kind manners demonstrated in the first two weeks of this Term.

I particularly want to congratulate our new Prep students for the incredible application to learning they have exhibited - they are a credit to their families and Prep staff.

Responsible Behaviour Code

Our Responsible Student Behaviour Code is based upon three pillars - SAFE, RESPECTFUL LEARNERS. All student and staff strive each day to fulfil the elements of this code. During the past two weeks, each class has identified, and committed to uphold 3 - 4 classroom rules.

These rules will be regularly referenced and reviewed throughout the weeks ahead. Every classroom also follows a Schoolwide Behaviour response. This consistency of practice throughout the School provides students with a safe and supportive environment.

Individual student needs remain the top priority within our School - including the support of students to follow the agreed Code of Behaviour.

Everyday Counts

The importance of attending school everyday is well known to all. Children miss so much organisational messages in the first 10 - 20 mins of the day if they are consistently late to School. It is important to ensure our students are at School before the 8:50am bell each day.

To parents and friends of our School Community - Thank you all for your ongoing support of our School.

Kind regards Paul

Cigarette Smoking Laws in Vicinity Of All Queensland State School

We would remind all Parents and Carers that it is an offence to smoke within 5 metres from the boundary of our school and we would kindly ask all smokers to refrain from smoking within this area for the heath and safety of our students.

FROM THE HEAD OF CURRICULUM Welcome to Term 1 2020!

Reading at CSS At Coolnwynpin State School, we believe if you read you will succeed. We teach a balanced, sequential and explicit approach to reading, which supports the diversity of readers within the classroom. To assist your child in advancing with their reading skills, I have included an overview of all of the decoding and comprehension strategies that we teach at CSS for you to refer to at home.

HOME READING LOGS Reading is an extremely important and valuable part of a child’s development. A key factor to developing independent, keen readers who consistently comprehend what they are reading is regular reading practice. To support you in the reading journey with your child and to recognise home reading experiences, all teachers will be sending Home Reading Logs home soon. Keep an eye out for them in your child’s bag. The purpose of the book is to:

Encourage and monitor regular reading habits

Reward and celebrate the regular practice of reading

Provide communication between parents, students and

teachers

Provide strategies for how to support a child when they read

Recommended Time per Reading Experience: Prep: 10 minutes Years 1 – 6: 15 minutes

LOTE (Language other than English) We have an exciting new experience for our Year 5 and 6 students for LOTE in 2020! This year, students will be learning Japanese through Distance Education. This will be school funded so there will be no cost to parents. Brisbane School of Distance Education is a world leader in the delivery of online learning. Through the innovative use of digital technology, they provide cutting edge live group lessons including support materials with a focus on each student succeeding. Our online LOTE sessions will begin in week 3. FROM THE HEAD OF INCLUSION Welcome to 2020. Walking around the school and visiting classes I have seen such a positive start to the year. The students are smiling. The teachers are smiling.

This year we are enhancing our Assistive Technology for our students. As a team we are developing our software and hardware to assist those students who require these adjustments. It is an exciting time as we all learn the new technology and deliver it to the students.

The teachers and myself are always available to communicate with the parents. Our days can get very busy with teaching and meetings. To support the staff, and give you the time you require to meet, without interruption, please contact the office and make an appointment to see us. Discussing how your child is going at school is important to us.

On a final note, it is important that the undercover disability parking area is kept clear, except for the parents of those students. You may have seen the maxi taxi collecting some of our students. Keeping this area clear is important for access, but most importantly for the safety of our students. I thank you for supporting this.

I am looking forward to us all working together this year for the benefits of the children.

Kind regards

Penny

PREP REPORT We are safe, respectful learners: Our Prep students entered school with a diverse range of skills and experiences. They were eagerly ready to absorb everything Prep has to offer.

It is end of week two and Prep A students are working very hard. We are busy practising our reading, writing and maths skills. In class we are learning to decode short, unknown words to help make us better readers. In Maths we are counting (forwards and backwards), subitising (recognising how many objects are in a group without having to count them), talking about more or less and sorting items in all different kinds of ways (size, shapes, colour etc.). Our Prep students are great Scientists. We are using our five senses to learn about our environment.

Well done Prep A! We are so proud of you!

FROM THE ARTS TEACHER Students at Coolnwynpin have participated in Arts lessons with each lesson providing them an opportunity to learn an instrument. Prep-Year 2 Students are learning untuned percussion which provides them with strong rhythmic understandings. Year 3 and 4 are learning the Xylophone and Metallophone to work on basic pitch understandings and build on their rhythmic skills. Year 5 and 6 are learning the ukulele and this combines the pitch and rhythmic understandings previously developed with musicality, form and dynamics. Each Student will continue learning their instrument throughout the year and I can’t wait to hear the sounds that are produced over the next twelve months.

The Cool Kids Dance Crew auditions have taken place and the continued enthusiasm for this program is encouraging. More than 40 students auditioned for a part in the Dance Crew and the results will be announced today. Rehearsals will take place each Wednesday morning at 8am in the Arts Room, additional lunchtime rehearsals may be required in the coming months.

Our Junior Choir commenced their rehearsals today and will continue to work on energetic, fun songs to keep them going throughout the year. Performances on Assembly will be regular so keep your eye out for further information. Rehearsals are every Friday morning at 8am in the Arts Room.

The Senior Choir commenced yesterday and Students in Year 3-6 have started learning their 2020 repertoire. Again, I endeavour to provide them with material that interests them and their audience (including parents!)

Creative Generations: State Schools onstage will be releasing the results of our nominations next month and I look forward to another enormous CGen Season.

Our School Concert will again be in Term 3 this year and the date will be released in the coming months. Lisa Rose

KINDYLINQ Coolnwynpin KindyLinQ Koalas (KCC) is fast becoming a reality, with sessions planned to commence in Week 4. The two weekly sessions will run from 9am to 12 noon each Wednesday and Thursday. We have a limited number of places available for 3 year olds. If you would like to speak with us about the program, please leave a message at the School Office and we will make contact with you. Thanks to those families who have already registered. Further information will be emailed out next week.

We have been very busy getting the learning space set up in the Prep precinct and the results are amazing. There will be a wide range of activities for our 3 year olds and their parent/carers to participate in each day. More information about the KindyLinQ program can be found at https://www.earlyyearscount.earlychildhood.qld.gov.au/kindylinq-pilot-program.

School crossings

Today a familiar sight around schools is the School Crossing Supervisor. Their role in the school community is to ensure that the students who cross the road at the children’s crossing do so in a safe manner. Children crossing flags are displayed near crossings around schools before and after school hours when children are crossing the road. A children's crossing may be supervised. School crossing supervisors use a hand-held stop sign to stop traffic and allow children to cross the road safely. When the children’s crossing flags are on display, you must stop at the stop bars and give way to any to pedestrians on or entering the crossing (regardless of whether a crossing supervisor is present or not). You must wait until all pedestrians have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath. If you need to stop or park (picking up or dropping of passengers) your vehicle must be no closer than 20 metres on the approach side and 10 metres on the departure side of the crossing. These “NO STOPPING” areas are clearly marked with a no stopping sign. Remember, road safety is everybody’s business.

Get involved in the School Banking program Welcome to all our new Students at Coolnwynpin State School. We are excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students and their siblings. School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking will earn an exciting reward every time they reach 10 deposits.

New rewards are offered each Term and the rewards available during Term One 2020 are:

Terry Denton’s Activity Book

Mini Soccer Ball (size 2)

Scented Stackable Highlighters

Icile Slapband Ruler

Artic Owl Fluffy Keyring

Water Skimming Bounce Ball

Snowy Origami Set

Scratch Aart Cards

Polar Pencils and Pencil Toppers

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online - Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

2. In branch - Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit book and money every WEDNESDAY and hand to their Teacher.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2020 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
